Book Description
This ground-breaking text is the first to offer Taekwondo in its totality, documenting the traditions, philosophy, and techniques of the world's most widely practiced martial art. In more than 8,600 photographs spanning 896 pages, renowned Taekwondo masters and elite competitors demonstrate over 700 core Taekwondo techniques, including stances, footwork, hand strikes, elbow strikes, standing kicks, jump kicks, ground kicks, avoiding and blocking skills, step and self-defense sparring, Olympic-Style sparring, breaking techniques, and solo forms and patterns. Techniques are named in both English and Korean throughout. Detailed introductory chapters provide an authoritative overview of Taekwondo's history, philosophy, current structure, and contemporary issues, and thoroughly review breathing and meditation, warmups and flexibility exercises, and vital targets. To address the highly specialized and constantly evolving needs of sport competitors, in-depth chapters on Olympic-Style sparring cover basic concepts, current trends, core techniques, tactics and strategies, terminology, competition rules, referee signals, and more than 90 core attacking and counterattacking techniques used by world-class competitors. For forms enthusiasts, 250-plus pages provide a comprehensive overview of 49 forms and patterns embraced by major federations, such as the WTF and ITF. Inclusive of virtually all Taekwondo styles, this unprecedented work integrates traditional and modern approaches, sport and self-defense, in a single text. Written and designed by the author of the 1,136-page Hapkido—widely acclaimed the most comprehensive book ever written on a single martial art—this indispensable work is the definitive text on Taekwondo, and destined to become a classic of martial arts literature.

Taekwondo: Traditions, Philosophies, Techniques.......2005-08-12
This is one of my favorite book about Taekwondo. It presents all technique that you need to become an excellent Taekwondo practicer. Its wide variety of 1-to-1 technique can help you efficiently both in sparring and on the street. It also presents various forms with discreet directions that a even a beginner can follow. I highly recommend it to any enthusiast.
TaeKwon Do from a WTF perspective.......2004-09-24
Mr Tedeschi is undoubtedly a skilled practicioner of Hapkido and has written a thought provoking and intelligent review of TaeKwon Do.
However, despite claims that it covers all forms of TKD, and indeed doing so in terms of patterns (Tull or Poomse depending on your WTF or ITF affilliation), it only deals with WTF (Olympic) sparring.
As a result, whole chapters on sparring are rendered irrelevant, much more difficult to apply or less useful to any non-WTF practicioner.
This WTF focus extends to techinical parts of the book too. Whilst acknowledging that WTF is primarily a sport form and ITF a traditional self-defence form, it then fails to cater to the techiniques of the latter in the practical sections.
Similarly, the focus is on footwork appropriate to WTF stylists, kicking techniques appropriate to WTF stylists, etc etc.
Having found Mr Tedeschi's Hapkido book enthralling and informative, I was a little disappointed with the failure to acknowledge the scope of modern TKD. WTF stylists may find it of more use, but if the book is going to claim to encompass all of modern TKD, I would like to see it do so.

beutiful pictures lacks material.......2004-08-30
I am sorry to say that Mr Tedeschi's book is lacking. he is by profession a wonderful designer but not a taekwondo Master. His book is a good roadmap for the beginner that lacks adequate instruction; but, not a research nor reference for anyone who has done the martial art or sport for any amount of time. The book lacks substantial information on advanced techniques , combinations and the strategies for sparring, Additionally there is little to guide the practioner toward the practicallity of Taekwondo. That having been said the book can offer some mechanical insight into the techniques of TKD for the beginner. But definetly not worth the price tag.
One you need.......2003-12-29
Get this TKD book and sell any others you have in your library. Mr. Tedeschi does it again with this book. This is the ultimate reference guide. I have purchase 4 book by Marc Tedeschi and haven't been disapointed, except when I resold my Hapkido book.
AN EXCELLENT RESOURCE!.......2003-12-07
Mark Tedeschi's Tae Kwon Do is a detailed, well rounded, extensive resource for the art. Instead of only containing one set of forms like some books, the book has hundreds of forms with play by play moves that help you follow along. It has an extensive section on the philosophy and history of the art that is essential for tae kwon do study. It really has everything- stances, kicks, forms, philosophy and more. Beautifully done and intent on every detail, I HIGHLY recommend this book!!

E-Z Heraldry.......2005-09-11
Very easy way to known gourgeous examples of heraldry art of all history and lands.
Artists book not for researchers.......2000-05-04
If you want to know what different styles of family emblems people have had this is a great book. If you want to know anything about the individual designs (whos it was, where it is from, age of origin), this is not the book. The book is 70% black and white and 30% color. It would be great for an artist, not a researcher.
A feast for the eyes.......2000-03-24
Like all Dover publications, I was not disappointed when I picked up this book. The illustrations themselves are rich and detailed, truly a feast for the eyes, for any artist or craftsperson. The helpful text and detailed descriptions make the book easy to use and very enjoyable. This book makes a fantastic suplement to the "Design Your Own Coat of Arms" by Rosemary A. Chorzempa (Dover), because it gives you a great wealth of ideas from which to work. I highly reccommend this book to anyone who has an interest in heraldry, you won't be disappointed.

There are dog lovers, and then there are dog lovers. Behavioral scientists Raymond Coppinger and Lorna Coppinger have raised hundreds of dogs of various breeds, raced sled teams, and published professional and popular works on canine behavior. Dogs is their manifesto of canine evolution and treatment by humans, and it offers deep insight, provocative theories, and controversial ideas regarding our relationship with them. Though some of the material is most appropriate for readers with some zoological background, much of it is written for a general audience--one that cares about dogs not just for what they offer humans, but for their own sake.
Arguing that much of current thinking about dogs' evolutionary history is misguided, the authors share their own complex story of wolflike animals coevolving with permanent human settlements and only recently being subject to directed breeding and artificial selection. This is interesting enough, but they go on to take issue with the use and treatment of dogs, some of which they claim is bad for dog and human alike. Pure breeding, making companion animals of inappropriate breeds, and even some uses of disability assistance are assailed for neglecting genetic and other hardwired aspects of canine life. Surprisingly little is known for sure about dogs' lives and behavior, so the Coppingers' contribution is a welcome, if occasionally unsettling, eye-opener. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Marking the first time that dogs have been explained in such detail by eminent researchers, Dogs is a work of wide appeal, as absorbing as it is enlightening.
Drawing on insight gleaned from forty-five years of raising, training, and studying the behaviors of dogs worldwide, Lorna and Raymond Coppinger explore the fascinating processes by which dog breeds have evolved into their unique shapes and behaviors. Concentrating on five types of dogs -- modern household dogs, village dogs, livestock-guarding dogs, sled dogs, and herding dogs -- the Coppingers, internationally recognized canine ethologists and consummate dog lovers, examine our canine companions from a unique biological viewpoint. Dogs clearly points the way for dog lovers, dog therapists, veterinarians, and all others who deal with dogs to understand their animals from a fresh perspective.
How did the domestic dog become a distinct species from the wolf? Why do different breeds behave differently? Most important, how can we improve the relationship between humans and dogs?
The authors show how dogs' different abilities depend upon the confluence of their nature and nurture -- that both genetics and the environment play equally key roles. They also reveal that many people inadvertently harm their canine companions because they fail to understand dogs' biological needs and dispositions.
Dogs is a highly readable biological approach by noted researchers that provides a wealth of new information about the interaction of nature and nurture, and demonstrates how unique dog behavior is in the animal world.

Applied Coppingerology K9 style.......2007-07-20
My husband, a biology faculty member, brought home a review in the journal, _Science_, of the Coppingers' new revolutionary work, and after I read the review, I was intrigued, so Darling Doc brought the book home from University library. I ate it with laughter, outloud head nodding, and pondering brain wrinkles. I am a K9 trainer of 15 years, have competed nationally, currently have two K9 partners working with me and train others to train their K9s. We also do a sport called Schutzhund, designed as a breed qualifcation test for German Shepherd Dogs. GSDs are very wolflike in appearance, so dispelling the notion that they ARE domesticated wolves was not a topic I wanted to take on with my trainees....until Drs Coppinger. Now I understand my own gut reaction to the earlier theories of evolution wolf to dog. My husband teaches the Coppinger theory, as well, in his intro evolutionary biology course (freshpersons always love dogs and this is a great start, discussion wise and learning wise).
I have been using Drs Coppingers' ideas, information, and wisdom for about 2-3 years now with huge success given the way I train...use of presented genetic/biological characteristics, shape behavior to desired form, and voila! trained dog with little stress.
I cannot recommend this series of books highly enough. I have personally seen the results of application on 3 of my own competition dogs and many others. This book is for the layperson whose dog has the most important job of all, companionship and partnership, to the serious dog trainer and trainer of dog handlers.

"Dogs" is a fascinating journey into the soul of "dogginess".......2007-02-17
I had never heard a word about this book before I bought it, but I decided to buy precisely for the inflamed criticism I read from someone who was "horrified" at some of the things he had read in the book, things like "oh,this book is evil, they say horrible things about service dogs(dogs for the blind or deaf)or even pet dogs!!"I think I also read some criticism of someone from the AKC or similar...
I thought Ray & Lorna Coppinger MUST have treaded on some sensitive "paws"+ touched some controversial issues to recieve this kind of criticism...SO I decided to write this review because this book is a JEWEL of dog books. The minute I started reading it,I was fascinated + swept!!Its an amazing and UNIQUE book, full of information it would've been hard to find had not the book been written by biologists. That's probably what sets it aside from other dog books.TRUE:you have to keep in mind its is NOT the book that will tell you how to get your dog to stop chewing on the furniture or how to stop pulling on the leash. But I have already read it twice, and I find it one of the most fascinating books I have ever read in my whole life.I think their hypothesis on dog origin-dogs domesticating themselves by becoming scavengers is highly plausible, just watch dogs in different cities + terraces where people are eating!-and I agree 100% in most(almost all!)of issues the authors claim when they talk about service dogs, show dogs and pet dogs. They are professionals that have decades of experience teamed with scientific data, and real love for dogs.Ray Coppinger has trained + ran with sled dogs for 30 years, and he explains the biological conformation of sled dogs, and why wolves DO NOT make good sled runners(for example)and then he followed shepherd dogs in Europe while they where migrating with flocks of sheep. He explains the difference on how you train one puppy to watch the sheep + another one to herd the sheep, and how the different puppies get used to the different jobs, and how unique that is,considering the dog is a predator and the sheep are its prey,so what a paradox it is to have a predator protecting its prey!!Just read carefully and enjoy every word!I certainly did, and still do.
Fascinating look at dogs.......2006-12-06
Dogs seem so familiar and common that even without owning one, you think you know them. However, this book, written by a biologist specializing in animal behavior, shows us how little we understand dogs. Coppinger points out why the "descended from wolves" story doesn't explain dog behavior and why asserting alpha dominance doesn't mean the same things to dogs as it does to wolves. If you are interested in a scientific understanding of why dogs do what they do, this book will be truly eye-opening. The "critical period" of puppies and the predator behavioral sequences that explain herding vs. guarding dogs were most fascinating. Coppinger should have his own special on PBS.
GREAT BOOK!.......2006-05-31
This book completely convinced me about the way dogs evolved. I really like it! I learned a lot from it. I liked the writers' style as well. Especially I liked the theory for village dog. If you come to Bulgaria, from where I am you'll see the same things authors describe for Mexico and Africa! Thank you, it was such an experience to read this book!
although the dog genome has been sequenced.......2006-03-19
Although the dog genome has been sequenced, this book informs us much abou the developmental genetics as well as the phenotype of the dog species.

Book Description
Whistles: every child's favorite noise-maker, every police officer's most trusted alarm, every girl or boy scout's most treasured souvenir. With almost 500 full-color photographs, this cheerful new book catalogs whistles from the past century, from the simple wooden penny whistle to novelty whistles with built-in compasses, 15-jewel watches, and mink fur decoration. There are many examples of tin whistles decorated with lithographs, plastic whistles made of celluloid, vinyl, and other compounds, and even a reproduction of a clay whistle made in the 1400s! While whistles could be as frivolous as the water-filled `warbling bird' variety, sliding whistles, and kiddie whistles with 1950s TV cowboy logos, there are many more serious whistles shown as well, including a Kentucky coal mine whistle(used to check for toxic gases), a New York City taxi-cab whistle, and a plastic version of traditional African "nose-flute" used in mating rituals. This book covers them all, with discussion of when and how they were made, instructions for taking care of them, and a current price guide.

This should be titled collecting toy whistles.......2006-11-20
I collect Hudson whistles (British Bobby whistles) and I had hoped this book would give me some useful information. However I was disappointed to see there was only one page that talked about Hudson whistles. Most of the book shows pictures of various types of toy whistles. There is a couple of sentances with many of the pictures giving a date or country of manufacture. The photos are well done, in color and very clear and crisp. So, if you collect toy whistles this book does have some value.

Delicious Time Saver!.......2005-11-13
I have been using this cook book for over two years and love it. Most of her recipes are really delicious, although I have never made any of the fish dishes. Sometimes I follow her instructions exactly and cook a week's worth of dinners in foru hours, other days I'll just double a recipe and put the extra meal in the freezer for later. Yes, as some reviewers have pointed out the author does call for a lot of expensive meats like rib eye steak. But I've found that you never need as much meat as she specifies. Instead of buying 12 rib eye steaks for a weeks worth of meals for example, I'll just buy five. That amount suits my husband and I just fine. All in all, this cookbook offers tasty, creative recipes that move beyond the traditional chili, spaghetti sauce and casserole dishes that many freezer cooking programs rely on.
Expensive, complicated, too fancy for me; Too much fish.......2005-07-14
More fish recipes than your normal cook-in-advance books. I didn't want to buy the book, but my cat spilled iced tea on the borrowed copy (helpful kitty). There were a few interesting recipes, but everything was way too complicated and expensive. I have since given my copy to a thrift store. If you enjoy cooking and eating gourmet recipes, but don't have the time, this might be for you. If you can borrow it at the library (via interlibrary loan if your branch doesn't have it) you can better judge it. I can't recommend it, because I found almost nothing appealing. But tastes are personal, and YMMV.
Just keep the book away from iced tea and cats.
Great recipes with good methods. You add the variation........2004-11-30
The recipes are very good. As noted in other reviews, the full fix-ahead method gives you a repetitive week of dining. However, if it's already in the freezer, leave it there for a week or two and leapfrog on to another section. You'll have a nice stock of quick meals with minimal prep when you need them and can break things up with your own repetoire when you have time. The recipes are still easy to follow if you skip the bulk prep and use it as you would a standard cookbook. You won't get frustrated trying to work back through multiple steps on different pages to assemble a "one off" item.
New approach but worth getting the hang of!.......2002-11-21
Love this book! Tried the ground beef mix and all the recipes for Week One so far, and they're all winners. My husband is still raving about the Peaches and Cream Stuffed Pork Chops! It took about 5-6 hours to cook one week's worth the first time, but I think I'll get faster after I get the hang of marathon cooking. Since I still do "regular" cooking some nights, one week's worth of Joni's recipes will probably stretch over 2-3 weeks for our two-person household. What a luxury to have delicious, restaurant-quality meals ready in your freezer when you are short of time. Joni includes directions for reheating whether you remembered to thaw in advance or not - that's really handy when your plans change at the last minute. Joni, if you're reading this - hope you'll come out with another cookbook soon - I'll be looking for it!
the food is good & not cooking every night is heaven.......2001-05-16
I have looked at a lot of cook-ahead cookbooks and chose this one because the recipes looked like something my family would actually eat. I was right - they are "normal" enough for my taco and hamburger loving children and tasty enough for my braised lamb shanks and grilled duck breast loving husband. I would agree with other reviewers, that if you are looking for budget do-ahead cooking, this is probably not the book for you. However, if you want to save time and have a realaxed dinner hour then I think this is a good choice. I have always balked at the once-a-month cookbooks because I can't imagine spending the 12 to 14 hours in the kitchen that kind of cooking would take, not to mention the kind of freezer space it would require. This seems like a great compromise and I have been pleased with the outcome.

Book Description
This work is a chronological account of the struggle between the Afghan Amirs of Kabul and the Manghit Dynasty of Bukhara for Balkh province ( wilayat) during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Drawing extensively on India Office Records, Persian and native oral sources, the book provides a unique insight into an important, but little-studied Central Asian region. Structured around the history of Maimana's Mingid dynasty, the book details the various military campaigns, whilst also examining critically Britain and Russia's role in the `Afghanisation' of Balkh during the period of the `Great Game'. The work is especially significant to historians since it questions conventional perceptions of Central Asia during the era of European imperialism. It examines too Balkh's social and economic situation. It includes numerous maps, charts, photographs and dynastic charts.

Yech!.......2004-04-20
After completing the first 3 or 4 projects in this book, I had to run to the library and get the QuarkXpress Bible. Seriously, this book doesn't teach you much about anything. Nat Gertler barely goes over a lot of information and the projects you do are ugly and uninspired. This book may be good as a companion book while learning QuarkXpress, but I would thoroughly recommend the Quark Bible, for a comprehensive, nuts and bolts approach.

A Chronicle of the Indian Civil Service.......2006-01-27
This book presents the Englishman's point of view about their time spent in India, chronicling the life and times of the British officers of the Indian civil service. It brings out the wonderful traits of the English character, so woefully missing today, that enabled them to build and run an empire the likes of which the world has not seen.
This book immediately brings to the reader's mind the vivid contrast between the well-governed districts and provinces of the British era and the ill-governed ones of the India of today; the scrupulously honest British civil service and the corrupt Indian establishment. The book highlights some of the wonderful gifts of the British empire to India - a full-fledged political unity, a network of railheads from which no village was more than 50 kms away (at the beginning of the 20th century, India had more than 30,000 km of railway track; in contrast China had less than 3000), separation of judicial and executive functions of the state, settlement of land revenue and keeping of meticulous land records (in Moghul and Maratha territories, the land revenue was at least 1/3 rd and 1/4th of the produce; it was 1/8th in British India), crackdown on Thugee and efforts to reform customs like sati, human sacrifice and child marriage.
However, the book is less than fair to the Indian movement for independence. The author has used unjustifiably strong language to describe the actions of Nanaji Peshwa, Tilak and even Shivaji. For Indians, this is a good book to get a perspective of events from the other side - something that has been smudged by years of silly Congress propaganda. For example, the timing and motive of that most thoughtless and inane movement - the Quit India movement of 1942.
Indians have been conditioned to think of the British period as a period of darkness, but the fact is that there was order and probity that was absent in the Mughal, Maratha and Sikh territories and is, indeed, missing in India today. It may perhaps be preferable to live in anarchy, as Mr.Gandhi implored the British to leave India to, but it is painful nonetheless.
Any period of foreign rule evokes strong feelings, but to a nation firmly steeped in mediaeval times, British rule was a bitter way of bringing the fruits of the European renaissance and industrial revolution. Certainly, British imperialism was benign as compared to Portuguese, Japanese, German, Italian or Russian imperialism. The tragedy is that they stayed longer than necessary, spoiled a lot many good things about India and handed over the reins to a class of Indians that did not understand India and tried to ape the western nations' overtly mental and materialistic way to progress.
Excellent synopsis of the British experience in India.......2005-04-18
Too bad this book is a sleeper. I had not heard of it except per chance happened to stumble upon it in a bookstore in Bangalore, India.
This book is an abridgement of the author's two volume work. The writing is excellent and brisk. A note of caution to fellow Americans. The writing style is decidedly British and at first may seem a bit stilted and awkward. But one soon gets used to it.
Mr. Mason's analysis of history is excellent. After a brief overview of major events the heart of the book is the analyses of said events. Though one may not agree with every conclusion; there is much food for thought. In my opinion the main legacy of the British was that of creating a nation by amalgamating a cacaphony of feifdoms and districts. Prior to 1740, the Mughul rule, contrary to popular belief, did not encompass India as a whole but only some northern areas and those were disparate and ruled by ad hoc "laws". Akbar tried to implement uniform laws and revenue estimations but met with marginal success. Prior to the moghuls there were empires such as the Ashokan but these never emcompassed the India we know today.
To date this is the BEST one volume work on the British experience in India. Highly recommended.

Book Description
With over 5,000 entries, this book provides information on the men and women who played a significant role in British India from 1583 to 1947. In addition to military and governmental leaders, the book includes entries on leaders in business, the church and missions, art and literature, and science and medicine. An effort has also been made to include the women who played an important role in India. The only other reference work on the subject, Buckland's Dictionary of Indian Biography, was published in 1906. This book updates that work, covering the last 40 years of the British Raj, and provides more balanced coverage of types of leaders.

Arrogance Creeps Into Too Many Entries.......2005-03-11
While this highly detailed volume is valuable for its scope--some 5,000 entries--I found that the arrogance of the author crept into so many entries that the book is more misleading than informative. Therefore, use this book as a spelling guide, and ignore Riddick's constant characterizations of major and minor players in British India. Pity Riddick coiuld not have just given us the information on these personalities without the tawdry editorializing.
