When my fiancee and I first started planning our wedding, we heard about this book and purchased a copy because of its popularity and mention in magazines and elsewhere. While there is some good advice, it's not the must-have some people say and it's heavily tied into the web site too, which is just more of a time drain. I think much of the material could be condensed into fewer pages and more focused advice. You won't regret buying it, but nor will it make your planning much easier IMO.

Touched on it all. Definitely a How To with details. It answered many questions not just for one kind of bride but for brides of all kinds. I thought the least helpful were the personal accounts, more touchy feely than helpful. Their website is the best and this does supplement the website with more detail.

I did my homework before my recent wedding and bought three books. This one is pretty basic and didn't cover anything I couldn't find out easily online or through friends. For better resources I recommend Esquire's Things a Man Should Know About Marriage and The Engaged Groom. Both are more comprehensive, fun to read, and speak to guys better than this.

I was so very surprised when I opened the book. There was so much more to this book than I was expecting. I enjoyed so much the Millie point of view, seeing the puppies, finding out how they all found homes, and even the Queen of England and Jordanian Royalty met the puppies or at least some of them. Lovely book to read over and over. It really did show a real side to the presidential family of the day.

I ran across this book that I had bought a few years ago and once again was fully entertained by it. We have a Springer Spaniel also, so that made it even more enjoyable. The pictures are fantastic! The story was adorable and gave us a look at how hard life in the White House is for a well loved pet. :) Give it a look, I think you will enjoy.

A New Classic For California Native Plant Enthusiasts.......2004-04-28

Over a period of almost 20 years, I've read every new and old book on gardening with California Native Plants. For about the last eight of those years, I've been waiting for someone to come out with a worthwhile new book on the subject. I think my waiting is over.

Gardening With California Monocots is a well-written guide to planting native orchids, irises, grasses and other monocots (plants that germinate with a single seed-leaf). The book explains not only where these plants occur in the wild, but also describes the conditions they require to succeed in your garden. The discussion on garden-worthy bunchgrasses is the most valuable and comprehensive I've ever seen. Even the gurus of california native plant authors, Marjorie Schmidt and Glenn Keator, have never covered the subject so thoroughly.

In addition, Gardening with California Monocots has something which most other books on the subject lack: stunning pen and ink drawings of the plants together with equally-beautiful color plates.

The book has one shortcoming. The authors don't go into enough detail about propogation of each specific plant. I wish the authors had provided specific information for the propogation of each plant discussed - explaining what time of year to gather seeds, take cuttings or make divisions, what medium to use to plant the seeds or cuttings, and how to pretreat the seeds, if necessary. I suspect the authors left this information out purposely to discourage readers from gathering seeds and cuttings from wild, often endangered, populations. Someday I'll find a book which provides all that information. In the meantime, however, Gardening With California Monocots is a must-read for native plant gardeners.

Informatively written by architecture-trained interior designer Sally Storey, Lighting By Design is a beautifully illustrated presentation filled with full-color photography by Luke White showcasing the impressive and inspiring variety of lighting effects that can be used to add a special touch to an interior design. From using light to create mood, to the skillful use of colored lights, to making patterns with lights, as well as selecting and positioning outdoor lights suitable for gardens and roof terraces, Lighting By Design is admirable in its imagery and practical in its techniques.

This book should be titled Lighting for Luxury Homes. It would be diffficult to translate the ideas presented here into lighting technques the average reader would find useful. Although the cover looks modern, the interior decoration style represented in most of the pictures is a combination of Traditional and Classic. The photos are nice, but not particularly inspiring. Storey's other book titled Lighting is more informative than this one. I don't think this would even make a good coffee table book.

There are tons of furniture books out there but this one is different from the norm. Not only does this book show images of the final product but it also has illustrations of how the furniture was built, the process of development and material call outs. This allows the reader to gain a much deeper understanding of the furnitures. I highly recommend this book.

I read this book my senior year in high school. Harris happened to be a great friend of my teacher and was more than happy to share even more of his experiences with the class. His ability to tell stories on paper equals his ability to tell them orally.

INTRIGUING JOURNEY AND INTRIGUING READ.......2004-11-10

In SOUTH OF HAUNTED DREAMS, Eddy L. Harris gives his readers an exceptional self-portrait of a black man wrestling with the emotional, political, and genetic legacies of American slavery. From the outset, Harris makes it clear that he is a man not merely obsessed with anger toward racial injustice but possessed by the demons of fear and rage, fear for his physical safety in the supposedly New South as well of fear of his own reactions to any racial conflicts he might experience journeying through the South. Hopping on his BMW.K75s motorcycle, Harris zips through Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and other places in search of racists, downtrodden African-Americans, and spiritual balm for his tormented soul. What he finds are a lot of people as confused about race, life in general, and their own individuality as he is. As he approaches both Blacks and Whites in his quest to understand the nature of racism in the United States, Harris renders some engaging sketches of individuals who share with the author both their time and the folksy wisdom for which the South is known. Yet, as entertaining as these vignettes are, it is perhaps a serious flaw that Harris fails in SOUTH OF HAUNTED DREAMS to make a definitive distinction between what might called the lesser evil of individual racism and the greater evil of institutional racism. For whereas the former sometimes manifests as nothing more than a bad attitude, the latter often results in the kind of economic and political deprivation that can tear a people or a country to moral shreds. For Harris, the South seems to be both a collective and an individual state of mind. And for that reason, the book reads in turn like a travelogue, social criticism, philosophy, "Blackamerican History," and personal memoir. It is mostly as personal memoir that it can and should be appreciated.

Mesmerizing - one of the best books I have read in recent years. The prose is engaging, descriptive and, at times, haunting. Reading this book was like opening a window into another human's soul - and seeing his dreams, demons, fears and aspirations. A must read!

Just read one book by Eddy and you'll HAVE to read them all.......2001-02-22

I hesitate to use this term to describe an author because I read so many books by great writers, but Eddy L. Harris is brilliant. His writing is extremely accessible and also engaging. He writes like a friend while also imparting wisdom. For anyone who's ever dreamed of simply living a free life and exploring the world(and being brave enough to write about it and generous enough to share about it), Eddy writes for you. His words are gorgeous without being flowery. His writing reaches deep and touches your heart and mind. I not only recommend THIS Eddy Harris book highly, I recommend ANY Eddy L. Harris book highly.

A black writer confronts the South and his demons.......1997-06-09

Eddy L. Harris is the best modern-day "travel" writer there is, bar none. He has gone down the Mississippi in a canoe, trekked across Africa and even written a book about his explorations, both internal and external, of today's Harlem.
Harris is a writer who happens to be black. He doesn't want people to judge him because he's black any more than because he has a beard or is tall, but blackness is part of him, and as a writer he seems to feel an urge to connect with what it means to be black in America.
In this poetic, fascinating account, Harris tours the Southern states of the U.S. with his own peronal twist - he rides a motorcycle. This way, as is not the case with a car trip, he can connect with the land and the people as he travels; he is closer to them. Of course, this means they have no choice but to see him, too. What Harris encounters and comes to find out on his trip is surprising, at times sad and at times wonderful. The writing is skillful in the extreme: although non-fiction, Harris manages to arrange his experiences and his ruminations about them in such a way as to form a novel-like construction, with buildup, climax and denouement.
This memoir is emminently readable and ultimately revealing about race, the South and America. For anyone even remotely interested in those topics, this is without doubt a must read
