Customer Reviews:
Good for a general piece on hiking........2005-06-06
This is a good work for a general piece on hiking. It covers a lot of topics such as: gear, clothing, planning, food/water, some simple do's and don'ts, etc... However it quickly covers these topics seeming to leave out the indepth discussions one would expect on such things as gear, packing and other things.
Don't get me wrong, it is a good book. It just isn't a very detailed book. Everything in it seems to only exist as just a few paragraphs. Where as you could fill up a whole chapter on just choosing the right day pack this book contains about two pages on the subject.
So it is a good quick read for those interested but if you are really planning to spend some time out on the trail you should pick up a book actually on backpacking.
Customer Reviews:
The Name says it All........2007-09-22
The book gets right to the point and offers much valuable advice on the art of crafting scenes.
So many little gems.......2007-03-01
This book is a great asset to any writer's library. Rather than give out a list of rules, this book focuses on making you aware of your options and drives home the important aspect of focus itself. The author helps you to focus on the purpose of each scene and gives you options for ways to deal with aspects of that scene (description, length, etc.) I've read a lot of books about writing. I didn't think there was much more for me to find here. I was wrong. I've had many lightbulb moments while reading this book. Don't skim, though. If you skim it can look like the same old thing. If you read closely you'll find that it's not.
A Good Resource For Writers.......2005-02-06
Whether you are a beginning writer or a veteran, this book can be a big help. Raymond Obstfeld points out common mistakes writers make, while at the same time gently guiding the reader down the path to better writing. From knowing how long to make a scene to creating the right mix of action and suspense in a chapter, this book is full of usefull tips and absolute rules of the trade.
The book is easy to read, easy to comprehend, and full of great advice. There are TIP highlights and Instant Workshop assignments that make the book a lot like a college course in writing. Some writing books try and hit you with so much advice that you feel overwhelmed by the advice. Not so with this book. Raymond Obstfeld manages to give us just enough of what writers need to understand and work on. I found the book to be extremely helpful.
If you want to know how to make a scene more memorable, keep the action moving without ignoring too much detail, or create cliffhanger endings that keep a reader engaged in your work, you'll want to purchase this book on writing. It's fifteen chapters of good advice for all writers.
See ya next review.
How to stifle a talking head!.......2004-12-23
Raymond Obstfeld has written over thirty-five books, ten screenplays and innumerable short stories and poems. He has written literary, mainstream, and genre novels; he also teaches writing at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California.
Obstfeld views the scene as a mini-story; it should have a beginning, middle, and an end; it should build to a climax; it should provide resolution. He shows how to use dialogue, point of view, or description to begin a scene as well as such techniques as "in medias res," starting in the middle of the action. He also shows how endings propel the reader into the next scene, emphasizing emotions and intellectual impact. He shows how to use cliff-hangers and jump cuts to increase suspense.
A really great suggestion is to outline your scenes on notecards to give yourself an overview of your novel; this will help you avoid too many "talking head" scenes and help you improve the pace of your novel. He also shows how to improve those talking head scenes when there isn't any alternative, such as in a mystery novel where the detective is doing a lot of interviews. He does this through misdirection, where the main character is involved in some action, such as driving to the airport and getting stuck in traffic. Thus the reader is getting information and is also worried about whether the hero will make it on time.
Another bugaboo Obstfeld addresses is description. Readers often skip this if it's too long, looking for the meat of the story; yet if you skimp on description, you lose credibility. Rather than describe everything the narrator sees, tastes, touches, smells, and hears in a scene, he suggests you focus on one of them, such as describing the smells coming from fast food restaurants in a working class part of town.
Obstfeld cautions the writer to never play it safe; he actually encourages beginning writers to "write themselves into a corner." The character now has no good alternative; both of his choices are unacceptable. What the heck does he do? This forces the beginning writer to think with more depth and his story will be fresher as a result.
Many, many doubts... read my review and decide for yourself.......2004-04-16
I must warn you: this is a very personal review. Your experience might be very different to mine, leaving me with mixed feelings on how to rate this book.
If you are like me, you will have read several books on writing by now. You probably started out with the basics (e.g. Stein On Writing?) and now you would like to focus on specific subjects, parts of your talent that need some fine tuning.
Well, I'm not saying this book is of no use, but there was nothing new to be found for me. The index is impressive, it certainly gives you the idea that there's lots to be learned... but I couldn't find anything I didn't know. Because I am a novice writer, I find it hard to question the masterpieces quoted in the examples. But... I can't help but wonder, is it just my taste or are most of the examples really nothing to write home about?
It is up to you. I would recommend reading "Characters and Viewpoints" by Orson Scott Card, which delivers much more than the title promises. My personal opinion is, you don't need "Crafting Scenes". If you find your scenes are not ideal, it is a lot more likely that something else is wrong instead. Picking up Orson Scott Card's book will proof my point.

Victorian Women's Fashion Cuts.......2001-02-02
This book was a wonderful addition to my library. It showed details of Victorian clothing which helped me to design and sew several Victorian replicas to wear. The book not only includes Dresses and Hairstyles, but Shoes, Hats and Coats. Clear details and a nice variety of images.

good.......2007-06-08
It is a very good book for camping with your dog. Has descriptions of all the places you can go with your dog for many major cities and some not so major.
Had High Hopes..........2005-06-27
Based on the type of activites suggested in "Canine Oregon", I purchased this. The title suggests that "Canine..." might be a series tageting a particular type of dog person. Both of these books are for vastly different activity levels. CW is more for the Outlet Mall, Casual walker, infrequent hiker. Canine Oregon is for far more active dogs and people. Two stars for inconsistency in publishing.

adventure.......2003-12-18
This book when i read it i can actually see the adventure in my head as i read. Its like im in the book or im there! They add so much words in there that just make u picture yourself with them that you want to keep reading and finds out what happens! it also reminds me of friendship because when they all go looking for christopher robin it shows that they really care for him and that they are true friends...and that is something everyone should ahve in there life. A true friend...i think it shows young kids what friends are or what friends do for eachother.
Pooh for Little and Big People.......2000-08-30
As are most of the Pooh tales, this story has the ability to touch a youngster with glee, anxiety, and an ending which reaffirms the value and over-riding nature of friendship. For adults, the book reminds us that misunderstandings evoke many pointless meanderings, but when taken with the right attitude, they should teach us something. The simple values of friendship and love are the lessons here.

Heartwarming.......2003-12-15
This charming book is a must read. I received it as a gift and couldn't put it down. It was heartwarming, funny and sometimes a little sad. It is a true tribute to the teddy bear which is loved by humanity and pets of all ages.
"A NEW TWIST TO A TEDDY BEAR BOOK".......2002-02-24
It was so refreshing to read a "different" kind of bear book. I loved the essence the author deplicted between teddy bears and their keepers!! The stories within this book were so heartwarming that I found myself reading them again and that is something I rarely do with a book. I loved the fact that these were true stories and I thought the author's way of telling a story was like sitting on the front porch and listening to my grandparents tales. The pictures were outstanding and the vintage photos took me back to a time I never lived. I think this book is for everyone, not just a teddy bear lover. When a book can put a tear in your eye and also make u chuckle out loud, I feel it has accomplished the ultimate. A MUST read for the year and I think it will make a grrreat gift for all of my friends. I hope there will be a sequel!!!!
READ THIS BOOK -- You won't be able to put it down!.......2002-02-21
Do you just need to feel good? Want to believe that the world can be a better place? Then I highly recommend In Search of Teddy. It is beautifully written with some of the most heartfelt stories that I have ever read. Don't let the teddy bear cover fool you. This book is about the human condition and the beauty of living life and simple things. I am reading it a second time -- something that I rarely ever do. I have, also, purchased several copies for friends. I am a avid reader and this is my favorite book this year. You don't have to be a teddy bear collector to love this book, you just have to be human. This author has trulycaptured the human spirit. If there was ever a time for a feel good book, now is the time, and In Search of Teddy is the book.I LOVE THIS BOOK.
My Heart Sings and The Photgraphs are SUPERB!.......2002-02-15
I have seen hundreds of BEAR BOOKS and seem to read the same things over and over again..until picking this heartwarming tribute! There could never be a more fitting tribute to the annniversary of the Teddy Bear than these TRUE stories and Tales FROM THE HEART of a woman who obviously knows how to bring a smile to our faces and a tear to our eye! I am not one to sit with a book but have found myself unable to put it down reading it from cover to cover over and over and finding more in each story than before! Each of the many photographs in the book is a masterpiece in itself and I am looking forward to the day when we can purchase the prints and maybe even greeting cards with the pictures shown! I applaud and admire the writers kind and gentle soul and thank her for bringing peace and love back into our lives at a time when its needed most! A great gift for those you love. A must for your coffee table collection or bedside foe a rainy night... even if you arent a Bear collector!

Book Description
In Search of the First Teddy Bear is a whimsical tale using photographs, and newspaper stories that were "published" 100 years ago about a teddy bear who goes back in time 100 years. He is on a mission to discover which company created the first teddy bear, Ideal Toy and Novelty of America (founded by Rose and Morris Michtom of New York) or Steiff of Germany.
Both claim to have created the first toy bear now known as the teddy bear. First, the teddy bear from 2002, called Schaumburg, travels back to Nov. 14, 1902, and visits with Theodore Roosevelt who is hunting for bears in Mississippi. Schaumburg is caught, hit over the head, then tied to a tree. The President is offered Schaumburg to shoot, but Roosevelt refuses to shoot the bear. Two days later, Washington Post Cartoonist Clifford Berryman draws Roosevelt refusing to shoot the bear, which in turn inspires Rose and Morris Michtom to create "Teddy's Bear."
Schaumburg visits Berryman as well as the Michtoms and Steiffs to discover who made the first teddy bear.
The ending will surprise everyone.
Customer Reviews:
Cute story for younger readers.......2003-07-28
This fun little book (15 pages including a two page illustration, but excluding two blank pages) tells the story of an investigation into the very first teddy bear. The hero of the story, Myke Feinman's teddy bear Schaumburg, uses a time machine to go back to 1902, where he investigates the Michtom "Teddy's Bear" and Steiff's "Bar (Bear) 55 PB." Along the way, Schaumburg discovers the real first teddy bear, and boy is he in for a surprise!
My twelve-year-old daughter picked up this book, and got a real kick out of it. The story is quite cute, and is intended for a younger audience. It gives the reader a feeling for the genesis of the teddy bear, without reaching any dogmatic conclusion. Overall, she is glad that she read it, and so am I!

Customer Reviews:
This text is insightful and needed .......2006-05-22
I have just finished this book, having already read another book by Matthew Wood entitled The Book of Herbal Wisdom.
Seven Herbs: Plants as Teachers is a noteworthy book delving into seven stages of life. The lives of Biblical characters (Abraham, Isaac, and others) are mentioned to help the reader interpret the power of the specific herb mentioned.
Without giving the the story away in the name of simplicity, "Seven Herbs" will guide you through seven specific herbs (to be taken one at a time) which facilitate inner and outward transformation. If one were to find him/herself stuck in a certain stage and needed natural, herbal aid, this text may prove to be a medicine by itself.
I have not yet utilized the herbs as directed by Wood, but I have Sagebrush on its way in the mail, and will give it a solo performance opportunity in my life (as a homeopathic flower essence in this instance). This book is probably going to end up a hidden gem among the many herb related books now on shelves.
Wood achieved a magical aproach to life, far beyond plants.......2002-07-01
This book is crazy in the sense that i couldn't believe my ears as i read it, seem wonderful to me.
Wood gives the knowledge of life an extraordinary sense, based on his learnings with the Ojibawe tribe he analizes 7 stages of spiritual development and relates them with 7 diferent plants and 7 diferent simbols found in the book of the Genesis. This way you can learn and comprehend about the phase in wich you currently are and help you through it using the power of this plants.
He explains everything in such a simple and wise way that permites you to deeply learn the use and meaning of healing plants, as he gives a light in understanding the dinamics of life.
An excellent in-depth study.......2000-03-26

Book Description
This book analyzes the antecedents to the Maccabean revolt and the initial phases of the rebellion against the background of contemporary Hellenistic and Roman history. The author contests the accepted view that the Jewish aristocracy during the Syrian wars was divided into well-defined pro-Seleucid and pro-Ptolemaic factions. A major section of the book deals with Antiochus Epiphanes: the author shows that although the king initiated unprecedented religious persecutions, his interest in Judea was somewhat limited, and an overall examination of the Seleucid's policies demonstrates his considerable political abilities. A prosopographical study indicates how the death of Antiochus led to strife and eventually disintegration within the Seleucid kingdom, paving the way for Roman intervention and for the Jews' march on the road to independence. This book offers a new approach to the reign of Antiochus Epiphanes, as well as critical analyses of the various Jewish sources and Polybius.
