A Truly magnificent book, all the photos and drawings a boat enthusiast could ever want. I nice broad range of vessel types covered from racing multihulls to powerboats to keel boats and gaff rigged schooners.

Excellent Coffee-Table Book.......2005-12-09

This book is very impressive and the years of extensive work to create and publish this book is amazing! A great conversation piece on a coffee-table. Anyone who enjoys yachts would enjoy this book, whether you have an interest in yacht designing or not. Or maybe I'm just a little partial, as my Dad, William H. Shaw, is one of the yacht designers written about in this book and I'm very proud of him.

An instant classic.......2005-11-21

An instant classic. This is an indispensable resource that has been too long in coming. The research is amazingly put together and the depth of entries is impressive. I was particularly interested in the research on Walter Pinaud and the yachting activity around Cape Breton at the turn of the century. Also, of less importance than the material in the book but still notable is the appearance of the book. It is a very attractive volume and the price on Amazon can't be beat.

Long awaited, this magisterial reference work by Lucia Knight and Dan McNaughten about the world's yacht designers will rapidly become a must have book for anyone with an interest in boats, sailing, yacht racing and racing rules, the evolution of yacht design, and many other facets of the maritime world. It's stunning, authoritative and comprehensive.

The Untimate Yachting Book.......2005-10-20

This monumental book, ten years in the writing covers virtually every yacht designer of the century. The length of the entry for each designe is based somewhat on their prominence or the prominence of their designs. The designs come from about the turn of the century (I really like some of the steam powered racing yachts.) to quite modern designs. The size of the yachts vary from small under twenty foot (7' is the smallest I see)) personal boats to the yachts of kings that may be 400 feet plus.

A Most Helpful Book!.......2005-11-09

After losing my mother to Alzheimer's disease and watching how it slowly destroyed her mind and prevented her from communicating even her most basic needs, I found myself desperate to begin preparing some type of testament wherein my final wishes could be stated. I ended up purchasing several books to help me with this task, and "So That Your Values Live On" was one of the most helpful. The authors have written a marvelous text for those of us searching for such information.

If you find this book to be helpful you may be interested in another new publication by Renata Marie Vestevich called "Grant Me My Final Wish:A personal journal to simplify life's inevitable journey." This beautifully soft padded journal is the perfect place to begin working on your ethical will. Ms. Vestevich covers all of the most important topics such as: medical, financial and legal matters, organ donation, religious wishes, important people to contact, as well as who will care for your minor children, dependent adults, and beloved pets once you are gone and much more. There are beautiful photo sleeves to place treasured photos in as well as plenty of space to write your cherished memories.

I urge all of you to start getting your final wishes in order now before it is too late! These two wonderful books can make this task much easier and less difficult for you to do.

Bravo to these authors for helping all of us deal with a very very painful subject.

lots of diversity.......2005-10-10

A more interesting book than I expected, mainly because of the diversity of perspectives exemplified by the wills.

Some wills (mostly pre-modern wills) sought to micromanage their children's lives; for example, one 19th-century will proposed a 24-hour-schedule for sons. Others are quite vague.

Older wills focused on the intracicies of Jewish law; more recent wills focused more broadly on nonsectarian principles of ethics, or on vague exhortations to observe Shabbat and keep kosher.

Older wills focused on burial details; more recent wills have rarely done so.

The most inspirational, in my view, was David De Sola Pool's (pp. 109-11). And if you read it you'll understand why.

Passing on values - and thinking about them.......2000-12-12

People of any religious background will find value in these suggestions for carrying out the Jewish tradition of leaving, in addition to a will that bequeaths material possessions, "a letter or will that attempts to sum up what parents have learned, what they want most for, and from, their loved ones."

The examples are from a wide range of people in various times - immigrants to America, Holocaust victims, novelists, rabbis, ordinary men and women. They are poems, letters, legal-sounding documents, rambling notes often amended - some examples eloquent, some prosaic.

Some parents give them as children are growing up, at marriage, or some other milestone in the life of the parents or the children, and then again at the parent's death. Some were written on a battlefield or in a concentration camp, with death imminent and little likelihood that the writing would get to the person addressed. The value of writing this kind of will is probably as much in the thought that goes into it and the changes that makes to one's life as in the benefit to those who read later.

The Bible study group to which I talked about this idea were struck by the rabbi's saying that some people are reluctant to put these things on paper because thinking about the values they want to "bequeath" makes people aware of how far they have fallen short of what they wanted to be. How distressing it would be to have the children say, "I didn't realize that was important to him..." instead of "That's what I would have expected, since he said it all his life and we saw him live it." It's worthwhile, if painful, to think about this while there is time to do something about it.

Many of the examples quoted scriptural reasons for the writing, such as David's charge to Solomon: "I go the way of all the earth; be thou strong therefore, and show thyself a man; and keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep His statutes...." Then the writer gives his own charge to his children.

Their suggestions for topics are useful: formative events, background, important lessons I've learned, people who influenced me, stories behind possessions I value, Scriptural passages, causes that mean most to me, my definition of success, what I regret, how much I love you.

Although the book would be most meaningful to someone with a Jewish background, it has value for anyone who is serious about passing one's values to the next generation, and is probably most useful for people to consider before a time of crisis arises.

Another good book with similar intent is "Put Your Heart on Paper; Staying Connected in a Loose-Ends World" by Henriette Anne Klauser.

Book has been enjoyed by my husband. The book was in excellent condition.

Disappointing.......2003-12-08

The images in this production are to Celtic illustration what imitation crab meat is to the real thing. Sad to say the quality of the images are just a couple of steps above cartoon art. Also disappointing is the fact that the images were scanned at 300 x 300 dpi. In this day and age, when many printers are cranking out 2,500 dpi, this low level of scanning leaves a lot to be desired. I have purchased other Dover products in the past and have been very pleased. The purchase of this book is one I regret.

so much to know.......2006-11-16

no matter how much you think you know about the natural northern world, specifically flora and fauna, this book knows more. sure, we all know that a spider's webbing can be twice as strong as steel for its size but did you know that spiders can custom blend their webbing for different tasks? stretchy, sticky, tough..umm...buoyant..er ,well, other qualities relevant to spiders. its like a more basic, easier to understand kinda string theory.. sorry, slipping off topic here. this book is great, breezily written, funny even. get it, put it in the bathroom and in just 30 mins a day.. no,wait, that's the learning company..you will be able to amaze and confound all your friends from wood chucks to marine biologists with your arcane knowledge of the great outdoors. well, hey, its working that way for me.

Having just lived through another l-o-n-g winter for the privilege of living in the northwoods, this book was like a breath of fresh air. From mosses to white pines, water striders to black bears, this very readable book covers most everything you're likely to find in the northern woods -- and there are even segments on clouds and constellations. One-stop shopping for all your info needs if you love the woods and are curious about its other inhabitants. Lots of little-known facts written in an intelligent and engaging fashion. An easy-to-use reference that even children could enjoy, with entries that make you want to check out "just one more thing." After buying it yesterday we had a long road trip ahead of us -- that sort of flew by as I read entries aloud to my husband. It would be a great addition to our cabin "library" on a pine shelf behind the woodstove, but I kind of think I'll keep it here at home, close at hand.

Beautiful and a good read too!.......2003-08-11

Of all the Carolyne Roehm books, this set is my favorite. It had some practical gardening tips as well as the flower arrangements and recipes. If you are expecting a gardening "how to" book, this is not the one. However, the books are beautiful and I enjoyed each one. It gave me many ideas for my own home. I will never have a budget that allows me to purchase 12 dozen roses for one display, however, many of her ideas can be implemented on a smaller scale with less expensive florals. The color combinations were inspiring as well as the examples of matching floral displays to the surroundings. If you love flowers and beautiful table scapes, you will love this book.

Roehm makes pretty things and to do that she relies upon items such as hellebores (a winter-blooming flower) which are quite hard for the average person to find. If her projects were less work or so dazzling that you didn't mind running all over East Overcoat to find the necessary components, then I'd be more enthusiastic about this book. As it stands, it's kind of a pricey picture book. I'd recommend Tracy Porter or Martha Stewart for a more hands-on experience.

WHAT A TERRIFIC BOOK! This is"la creme de la creme" and i find it very difficult when other reviewers compare her product with Martha Stewart's line!It is as if we compare Opera with Andrea Bocelli,this collection of notebooks are so refined and so classic at the same time that i rediscover them each time i need them. The winter notebook gives wonderful ideas of presents for the guests and the flower arrangments are one of a kind. The level of artistry is demonstrated in each pages and places Carolyne Roehm as one of the most elegant designer of all. I also appreciate the fact that Carolyne Roehm understands the need of elegance in the day-to-day life and that it doesn't have to be expensive. I'm a young Opera singer and in my field you receive a lot of flowers and with this book i was able to create wonderful bouquets and appreciate another form of art. I admire her flair and her sense of style, for me Carolyne Roehm is not only a designer but a real artist who search for the very best in every detail.

I found this third book in the series as inspirational as the others. I don't need step-by-step instruction to develop something beautiful. A little inspiration goes a long way with a naturally creative audience. For those who have time to glue flowers on boxes, I leave you Martha. From a busy professional's point of view, I'll take the Roehm way, any day.

Not bad, but lacks content.......2000-02-26

This was the first of Ms. Roehm's seasonal notebooks that I purchased. I have since bought the other two, and am anticipating the Spring notebook due out soon. While the photos are exquisite, I feel that the book lacks content. I couldn't help wishing there was more of everything in this book - more pictures, recipes, etc. I enjoy a good "picture book" and that's most likely the reason I'm awaiting the last book to the series. I couldn't help comparing her to Martha Stewart, and I'd gladly welcome a new face in that field, but it just doesn't come close to Martha's myriad of ideas. The bottom line is: if you like to look at pretty pictures and get some inspiration for decorating your own home, then you'd probably like this book.

Balfour's Declaration.......2005-11-09

Balfour's book advances a strange thesis which he makes compellingly believable by the middle of the text, and from that point afterward, you believe it the way you believe the earth is round. If I oversimplify his argument, it is to state that the Spanish Army of Franco was a rag-tag scatterbrained bunch who might well have lost to the Popular Front during the War of the later 1930s had not they had the chance to hone their martial skills during a horrifying campaign earlier in the century, directly after the First World War, in Northern Africa. As Bob Hope and Bing Crosby sang, "Just like Webster's Dictionary, we're Morocco-bound," and so might have sung the colonial army of 1919-20, when they invaded Morocco with every trick in the book, including mustard gas, itself a pretty new invention.

Africa was a-swarm with colonialization, and much of the continent had already been divided up by competing French and British interests, with a smattering of Dutch privatization and heaping helpings of German outposts. The Spanish may have felt themselves embarrassingly absent from Africa, and the Moroccoan incursion might have been a matter of national pride. However they came bump up against the cunning guerrilla fighters of the Rif, a loose organization of native tribes that, frustratingly for our hermanos, seemed to vanish into air as soon as you attached them, like smoke, only to re-amass under stronger conditions from a higher hill in the sand, the minute you had counted them out for the kill.

I haven't seen much press attention for this intriguing OUP title, which has by the way some very high quality maps that help us to visualize the scene of the crime with the precision of Patricia Cornwell. Maybe some critics have ignored DEADLY EMBRACE due to its pulp title, which might have been by Cornell Woolrich or James Hadley Chase rather than a serious work of history. Specialization is so prevalent in today's history that I expect Balfour has been ignored largely because his focus is on Africa, and confounding the specialists in the Spanish Civil War who have just about myopically concentrated their gaze on Europe, with perhaps a glance at related developments in the USA and Canada.
