Book Description
This special issue of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry contains original research articles and review papers which were invited from the participants of a recent meeting organized to honour the 60th birthday of Naranjan S. Dhalla, Ph.D., M.D.(Hon.). The meeting, organized by Drs. Morris Karmazyn (London), Grant Pierce (Winnipeg) and Balwant Tuana (Ottawa), was held at the Best Western Lakeside Inn in Kenora, Ontario, Canada on August 23-25, 1996. The meeting was entitled The Cellular Basis of Cardiovascular Function in Health and Disease. There were over 40 invited speakers from 15 different countries represented at the meeting, attended by over 280 people. Keynote lectures were presented by Drs. Norman Alpert (Burlington, VT), Robert Jennings (Chapel Hill, NC), Makoto Nagano (Tokyo, Japan), Howard Morgan (Danville, PA), John Solaro (Chicago, IL) and Nobuskira Takeda (Tokyo, Japan). Dr. Henry Friesen, President of the Medical Research Council of Canada, presented Dr. Dhalla with a plaque at the banquet honouring his research accomplishments over his distinguished career. Dr. Dhalla's outstanding research achievements in understanding the subcellular basis of cardiovascular disease were highlighted at the meeting. One of the unique aspects of the meeting was the special effort made by 39 former trainees of Dr. Dhalla to attend the meeting to honour their mentor. The ex-students and trainees came from all over Canada, the United States, Japan, Slovakia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Estonia and the Netherlands. The meeting was judged to be an overwhelming success in terms of the scientific content as well as collaborative interactions initiated.

Two for Oahu.......2006-08-01
The Fodor's Hawaii and Oahu Trailblazer were excellent mates. Fodors was too heavy to carry around all day so we tore out the pertinent pages and used it for their takes on restaurants and Waikiki. If you're on a budget these books are a must.
Can't wait to escape.......2006-07-20
Well written book with lots of details and recommendations. I like the way it is laid out in geographical groupings, not just a long list of one type of attraction then another.
Very Helpful.......2006-06-18
We used this on Oahu and the big island. It was indispensable for getting around and finding places. The write-ups were very accurate and helped us find a much nicer hotel when the one we had checked into turned out to be a roach motel.
for all of Hawaii.......2006-06-05
Along with specialty guides for Hawaii like the Trailblazer series, we use this Gold Hawaii book for things like the spa addresses and the refreshment reviews. We keep it in the back seat and reach for it when we approach the little towns. Thumbing through it always turns up something worth seeing.
The shop reviews and addresses always interesting. Sometimes the storefronts don't have curbside appeal and the book always spurs some interest to go inside.
It could stand for more young family with children stops and more cheap restaurants. That's our only criticism of this otherwise valuable book.
BEST.......2006-02-19
Gives a very good overview of Hawaii. Tells of the lowest rates ect. Very helpfull

Buy this book. Every woman should learn Successful Language.......2002-01-30
My only reqret is that Dr. Mindell wrote "A Woman's Guide to the Language of Success: Communicating With Confidence and Power" after I had earned my masters degree (this book should have been required reading) and after I already became deeply entrenched in my current career. My goal is to use the principles taught in "Language of Success" to help me dig myself out of my work rut and into a higher-paying position.
Dr. Mindell's book is a "must-read" and a "must-do-what-you-read" book for every woman.
This book should be required reading for every woman whether or not she earned a high school diploma or college degree. If she works with, or for, people of any gender, this book should be mandatory reading.
This book should be required reading for any mother or guardian with any type of daughter (or with a son exhibiting timid tendencies) so that she could train her child to use the language of success principles that Dr. Mindell teaches.
The concepts provided are simple, yet powerful. The book is clearly written and Dr. Mindell even uses humor; this is not a "grammar" book.
A suggestion: before you read the book, take two or three minutes and write a pretend written memo directing "someone" to do an unpleasant task. You don't HAVE to do this to learn from the book but it will be fun and you can use the memo as a benchmark to learn about yourself and compare it to later business writing after you learn how to use the language of success.
I learned a lot about myself from "The Language of Success." I learned that there are a lot of changes that I need to make. They are simple changes, but until I read this book, I was totally unaware of how "weak" I come across in the business arena.
I instantly began to use Dr. Mindell's suggestions, right from the first chapter. I know that as I put her concepts into practice, that I will reach my professional and personal goals.
Example of two easy rules to improve your image are to:
1. Avoid using "like" as in: The presentation was like real good.
2. Avoid using "I think" when you really "know" something. Don't start a sentence by saying, "I think we really ought to do such and such." Just say, "We ought to do such and such."
etc., etc., etc.
Don't worry: the "Language of Sucess" principles won't turn you into a rude woman when you put them into practice, but they will improve your image of authority without making you appear overbearing.
Please buy this book if you are a woman--whether you work in your home or for a Fortune 500 business. Doesn't matter. Read it.
I wish I learned the principles of "Successful Language" when I was a child.
-From a satisfied customer and new Language of Success "student"
Great assertiveness handbook for women - empowering tips.......2000-11-07
Mindell brings a sharp focus to the words we use that take away our power - the tentative hesitancy built into language for women in our culture. Her ideas for sharpening word usage and using tighter assertive phrasing are a must for women to learn. I began a "power verb" list right away! I am recommending this book to everyone who takes my assertiveness classes.
A power-changer and a life-changer.......2000-07-19
I've put the author's theories into practice and seen dramatic changes in the power of my communications to co-workers. Learning to speak with power has helped me embrace my real authority . I'm buying more copies for the young women in my office. Once you learn what she has to say, you never go back.

A Woman's Guide to the Language of Success.......1999-12-17
A spectacularly helpful and insightful book for anyone, male or female! Mindell describes, in compelling detail, the exact ways in which women unknowingly use weak language that undercuts our authority, power and persuasiveness--and she shows how to fix the problem. Mindell believes that strong language empowers everyone and she teaches the reader how to communicate clearly, forcefully and effectively, with respect for your listener AND your own ideas. Whether you want to lead at the office or at home, this book will help you do so more successfully, and with greater pleasure.

A Complete Guide to Starting and Operating a High-Profit Organic or Hydroponic Business That Benefits the Environment. If you ever consider installing a greenhouse, or already have one, this book can help you turn your expenditure into a profitable venture. 2007 edition
Customer Reviews:
This 2007 Edition is a plan to succeed........2007-02-19
Steven Carruthers (Australia) Publisher Of Hydroponics and Greenhouse Magazine wrote this review.... Secrets to a successful Greenhouse and Business is written for the beginner or serious home gardener who wants to start a profitable home-based business growing plants in a greenhouse, or for educators looking for specialized classroom projects. It is also valuable text for existing commercial growers, if only to revisit some of the basics from time to time. Divided into 11 sections, Secrets to a Successful Greenhouse and Business will tell you everything you want to know to get started in a greenhouse business. The book covers all major growing systems including hydroponics, organics, and good old-fashioned soil cultivation. It includes a basic plan to build a solar greenhouse, and information on soil and fertilizer mixes, insect and disease control, marketing, and guidelines to organize your greenhouse business. The section on ?Selling, Marketing, and Economics is especially useful for new comers to greenhouse production. Gone are the days of growing plants on speculation and hoping to find a market before the crop is harvested. The first step in any successful horticulture business is to identify your market, and to grow what the market wants. This section offers some valuable insights into how to go about that. The text explores the marketing process and includes developing sales concepts and marketing strategies, as well as establishing a realistic budget. I can't think of another text that says it better. There are also special treatments for marketing hydroponic and organic products, as opposed to soil-grown products. The section on ?Greenhouses? is succinct. The author leaves no stone unturned in his endeavor to cover every aspect of greenhouse production. Topics include environmental control, choosing the right greenhouse covering, operating costs and cash flow, ideas to improve your greenhouse, and much, much more. This section also includes a basic solar greenhouse plan, including a detailed inventory of materials (imperial measurements). The section on Specialized Projects with Excellent Profit Potential examines the major soil-less culture growing systems that are used in todays modern greenhouse, with a focus on greenhouse tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, tropical fruits, and ornamental plants. There is also a special treatment for school greenhouse programs. There are few greenhouse texts that go beyond the hardware of a greenhouse business. This text does. The section on Guidelines to Organizing Your Business is about turning into actions. According to the author, people don't plan to fail they just fail to plan. In this section, apart from highlighting the need for good planning, the author explains the basic steps for organizing your greenhouse business. These include on sight considerations such as obtaining zoning ordinances and building permits, and types of financing, right down to Workers Compensation. Another section on Delivery, Collecting, & Using Computers, is a practical guide for those processes. The author covers everything including packing and labeling, box construction, and how to start with a small business computer. The author provides a practical explanation of the World Wide Web and its importance for communication, to quickly find or exchange technical and market information, or to develop new markets. The author also includes a lists of useful websites. This book is published in the Unites States, for a North American readership but its wealth of information gives it international appeal. If you are thinking of starting a greenhouse business, then this book is for you wherever you are. It is full of tips, ideas and resources, and generously illustrated.
Book Description
According to the author, there are not enough greenhouse growers in the country to be anywhere near the saturation pointmaking it an excellent business venture for those who love working with plants. His pragmatic no-nonsense guide offers a complete course for such a business venture. He discusses everything: plant containers, buying plugs, propagation, hydroponics, specialty crops, watering and growing care, soil and fertilizer mixes and more. A chapter on greenhouses discusses different types of structures, coverings, heating and cooling systems, and provides basic plans for a 30' x 96' solar greenhouse. Another chapter on insect and disease control outlines an excellent organic program emphasizing prevention, organic sprays, and beneficial insects. He pays ample attention to the business side as well, explaining marketing, accounting, sales, plant delivery, bill collecting, computers, financing, licenses and permits, etc. He even provides a wholesale price lists as guides and a large list of plant buyers and suppliers.
Customer Reviews:
Good content if you can get past the presentation.......2006-04-30
This book does have lots of good information, but the author could have at least used spellcheck. There are spelling errors on almost every page, as well as a few missing words spread around the book. There are even a few places that the author copy and pasted an entire paragraph. All of this left me thinking of this book as being cheap and I had to question the validity of the information if the author doesn't even bother to check for errors in his own book.
Excellente!!.......2006-03-10
If you are considering going into a business requiring a greenhouse...READ THIS BOOK FIRST. There is just SO much valuable info here.
I was sceptical about buying the book because of a previous negative review. Yes, the book has a couple of typos but that was easy for me to overlook because of the wealth of good info I was receiving. I have been an organic gardener/farmer for 20 years and have not been confident enough about the greenhouse business to step out in it. With the info contained here I can make an informed decision about adding this to my business.
To the author...Thanks for the help!
Spelling Bee.......2005-05-11
Hey Caraphor, "Appendicies" is SPELLED: a-p-p-e-n-d-i-c-e-s.
Now how can I trust your scathing review when you can't spell?
I have made unreal profits with this book........2005-04-21
This book has all the info I was looking for. Buyers, suppliers, greenhouse sellers and which type are the best for certain crops. Finding info on the right pot size and trays to use was very helpful. How to find a buyer and what to say was the most useful bit of info that I have never seen in any book. This is worth the cost alone. I have to remark about the review by Caraphor, who says the book is full of erros, and Boron is not harmful what a misleading statement...Completely WRONG ! Boron is harmful and a couple of errors in 180 pages not bad... thank you Mr. Taylor for the accurate info! Heres what the county health dept. says about Boron. "Breathing moderate levels of boron can result in irritation of the nose, throat, and eyes. Reproductive effects, such as low sperm count, were seen in men exposed to boron over the long-term. Animal studies have shown effects on the lungs from breathing high levels of boron.
Ingesting large amounts of boron over short periods of time can harm the stomach, intestines, liver, kidney, and brain. Animal studies of ingestion of boron found effects on the testes in male animals. Birth defects were also seen in the offspring of female animals exposed during pregnancy."
The buyers list is real!.......2005-04-21
I found this book at the university of Calif. in Davis and was highly recommended by them back in 1999. But it wasn't till I saw a review in [a] magazine that I bought it. My greenhouse business took a complete turn around. My profits went up last year by 5oo%. There are hundreds of money making ideas. The best and cheapest ways to do just about everything. I like the way it tells you every thing you need to know to get a buyer to buy them and I could not believe it till I tried it. The author covers so many ways to promote including the internet, making videos, and how to grow what is needed. The chapters on building a greenhouse showed me the difference between steel and wood, and gothic and hoop. When you need a cooling system and when you can just use curtains to let cross ventilation in. The greenhouse that the author designed is the newest one I have built ...1/2 of the ones I built 5 years ago. The directory in the back has pages of buyers and the best supply companies all over the USAis worth more than the book price. Being a true enviormentalist I was delighted when I found that all use of poisons have been omitted and only natural ways of insect distruction are given. Since a clean greenhouse has very little insect problems I have found that he is right, poisons not needed! Even some real good ideas concerning what to grow first to make some fast money are included. Well worth the price if your not lazy!
