Customer Reviews:
fantastic book.......2003-11-12
This is one of my absolutely favorite horse training books. I have used it as I have moved from hunter shows to dressage. I love the fact that it deals specifically with problems. You find the problem in the book and she discusses the symptoms and the treatment. It is a great book. I recommend it for hunters, jumpers, cross country and dressage riders.
A wonderful book.......2003-02-16
This is a great book. A good training guide with traditional methods, but one that works well with today's enlightened horsemanship. This is one of the few training books (for both horse and rider) that I would spend money on a second time.
Great Book.......2000-08-09
This is a very practical and useful book. It begins with a program for training the horse. Then it states problems and provides solutions that go back to the basics covered in the training program. I found it clear and easy to use. So many books have pretty pictures but don't really get to the meat of the problem.

Customer Reviews:
Best Travel Book I Have Ever Purchased.......2007-01-10
I am a recent convert to Rick Steves. When I decided to travel around Eastern Europe I at first opted for the old standby - Lonely Planet. However, I stumbled upon so many great reviews of Rick Steves that I decided to get this book instead. I am certainly glad that I did.
Rick has a flair for sucking one into the world of which he writes. Before I even took my trip I found myself reading the travel book for leisure, not just planning.
The tips on hotels and hostels were great, as well as various restaurants. While I am not exactly a heavy spender, the book gave me great suggestions that allowed me to really feel like I was mixing in with the locals, especially in Slovenia.
I was also very impressed with Rick's recommendations on which sites and monuments to check out and which ones to skip. Steves is not afraid to state quite bluntly if an attraction is worth skipping. The only time Rick let me down was with the Joze Plecnik house in Ljubljana, which turned out to be a complete waste of time. I would have rather just spent more time in Bled.
I highly recommend any Rick Steves book. He is arguable the best travel writer around today. It's a pity that he only focuses on Europe, as I'm sure even a book on Tajikistan would be fascinating.
Great buy.......2007-01-03
It's always good to read the history of a place before visiting it! I helps to understand the behavior of the people. And the hints are also really worth!! Great savings!!
Best Way to see Eastern Europe.......2006-11-05
Rick Steve makes travel a cinch. The book hooks you up with the best restaurants, hotels, and places to see. I used this book last fall and did things I would have missed without it. Such as chasing a wedding couple in a rowboat in pouring rain across the lake in Bled to see the groom carry the bride up 100 steps, having an elegant dinner in Tito's favorite villa and staying in the coolest jail house in the world in Lujbiana (sp.). I bought this 2nd book for my sister who is going to Eastern Europe next spring.
Excellent Information.......2006-06-30
Rick Steves did his homework and this book definately helped in the small details. Especially helpful was the section regarding Auschwitz. Getting to and from can be tricky, and the book helps the situation. However, the minibus system wasn't as described in the book. Overall, a fantastic resource for traveling to Eastern Europe.
Needs improvement to be user-friendly!.......2006-06-22
Although there was a wealth of information within the book, it was almost impossible to locate through the Index. If you are trying to find an explanation or discussion quickly, do not bother with this book, as we found it necessary to leaf through pages and scan for key words, which often were noted museums, churches, palaces, etc.
For ease of use, and because of its weight, it should be separated into 2-3 volumes. We stopped carrying it very soon after arriving in Eastern Europe.

Customer Reviews:
Rick Steves' is the Best!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-23
Loved this book. I dragged this book all over Europe for 31 days. Wow, this book is the bomb. It led me to many jewels in many countries and it helped me find train stations, find my bearings when lost in Switzerland, led me through Vatican when in Italy. I was so impressed. I swear by this book! Its the best.
Rick Steves' Best of Europe 2007.......2007-07-07
Great book! I love Rick's books. Use them for every European trip. This one is a wonderful overview to really get the Best of Europe. Especially if it's your first trip. Don't miss Rothenburg and Hallstatt!
5 Stars for 2 months of European Travel.......2007-06-22
I traveled in Europe for about 2 months. This book was my main guide book. I also used Eyewitness Europe. This book is excellent because it covers traveling to and from the city, city transportation, the sights in the city (and they are rated so you have an idea of which ones are worth your time,) entrance fees, and any special discount passes that you might benefit from.
The only thing I want to warn you about is the cities the book covers. He covers the major cities in each country, but make sure that the book covers enough of the cities you are going to visit before buying it. Ex: Doesn't cover Munich, Innsbruck, Hanover, anything outside of Prague in Czech Republic. These are just a few examples. For us it was perfect because it was our first trip to Europe and we wanted to see the main sights and cities.
Best guide I have reviewed ever.......2007-05-08
I have been planning a family trip to Europe for a long time, after reviewing this guide, I adjusted all my travel schedule as well as Hotel reservations. It is very well organized and has great tips.
Very detailed. Highly informative. Offers opinions rare in other publications.......2007-04-10
Steves take the time to not only provide details of destinations, but also gives the reader rankings of Countries and Cities to visit first plus he ranks the sites within the country. EXACTLY what a first time visitor needs. I will combine his recommendations with those of friends and family. Of course, I will be sure to read at least two other sources before developing a game plan for our first trip to Europe. I grow tired of fru-fru books that say everything is great and every city is great. Steves sticks his neck out with opinions and details to back up those opinions. I have every reason to believe that all of the more specific guides will be similar. I HAVE ALREADY SUBSTANTIALLY CHANGED MY OPINIONS OF WHERE WE WILL GO ON THE FIRST TRIP. Is it exactly as he recommends? NO. Not at all. We prefer the out of the way smaller uncongested cities vs Paris, Rome and London. Not for us, thanks. BUT, we have already developed an initial list to investigate based on his info of those smaller "second tier" locations that suit OUR interests. After all, it is OUR trip. But with this guide, we have saved dozens of hours of research. Highly recommend for anyone. Beat Michelin big-time

Coming of Age Gift.......2006-06-05
I got this when I turned 18. I looked at my parents and wondered where the heck my new game was. That game doesn't matter now, the book does, and I'm happy I recieved it. This is hands down one of the most important books I own, including Catcher in the Rye, Catch-22, and a few others.
Since I got the book I've become a best man, I've had to tie ties and knots, practice FIRST aid, eat shushi, and many other things, which are all covered in this book very well. It's funny, informative and well done.
Funny, Entertaining, and informative for any age!.......2001-11-21
This book is the perfect gift for your husband, father, son, nephew, godson, graduation, birthday, holiday gifts for young men of any age. John Hunt has a infectious wit & charm in this funny and informative guidebook. He tells the reader how to do about everything from changing a tire to changing a diaper in a very entertaining read.
Can't wait for his next book !!!!!

Book Description
The Companion Parrot Handbook is a remarkably complete, up-to-date guide for the parrot owner, including information on everything from the fundamentals of successful parrot keeping to valuable advice on preventing and solving behavioral problems. A sampling of topics covered include choosing a parrot, skills to teach a parrot, converting parrots to a healthier diet, what to do if a parrot flies away, and how to travel with a parrot. Ms. Blanchard provides excellent guidance, gained from over 20 years as an avian behavior consultant, regarding basic behavioral concepts and the methods that can be used to live long and happily with a companion parrot. Specifically, her information and techniques serve to build trust between parrots and their owners. Illustrations, done by both Sally Blanchard and Jeff Riebe, serve to help create an exceptionally humorous and insightful publication. This book is written so that it can be read in one of two ways. It can be read from start to finish or used as a reference to look up specific topics, such as "First Aid for Broken Blood Feathers", "Towel Training", or "Excessive Screaming". It is a "must have" for anyone who has a parrot in the home or who may be thinking of adopting a first parrot.
Customer Reviews:
Only the best for feathered children..........2006-08-18
If you have birds, getting a bird, thinking about getting a bird, would like to know about whats and whys of avian behaviour, this book is an absolute essential. It doesn't cover everything (nothing can), but it's one of the best bird books I've come across in my working in avian rescue organizations. If you can only afford one, you probably shouldn't have a parrot, but make this the first one.
Excellent Companion / Pet Bird Resource!.......2005-04-23
Sally Blanchard is an authority on owning and enjoying companion birds. She is a conservation-minded individual who understands the fine line between owning companion birds and keeping wild birds in the wild. Her advice on companion birds is very thoughtful, informative, and inspiring, and I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to obtain a companion bird. In addition to being fun and enjoyable, people need to know that taking on a bird as a companion is a lot of work, and so these animals are not for everyone. The advice Sally offers in this handbook is absolutely essential to anyone wanting to own (or currently possessing) a companion bird.
I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL MY BIRD BUYERS.......2004-08-18
I breed and sell parrots and this is one book that I strongly recommend for all of my buyers to purchase. After thumbing through my copy, many buyers can't wait to order theirs and offer to buy my copy. I agree and had sold my original copy, plus a few replacement copies, before buying a box of them to have on hand for immediate purchase.
As a breeder who cares about the home where my birds are going, I feel much more confident when my babies are going to someone who has read this book.
five stars from a "tamed" critic.......2004-08-12
Just got the book and read it half-way through but already it is clear: this book is fantastic! I've had an African Grey for 24 years (now at my parent's place), moved into a new house recently, and got a Blue Indian Ringneck to liven up the place (quite a different bugga from my Jaco). So, decided to read up on Ringnecks et al. (surprisingly the Internet contains little informative data). Anyhow, I acquired several books including a couple by M. Athan (see my review). Mostly they were disappointments, esp. the behavioral ones. A lot of half-baked psycho-babble and generic tautologies that leave you almost as clueless as before (and I've had a temperamental birdy for some while).
Not so with S. Blanchard's book. It is insightful, to-the-point, well-organized, well-written (entertaining parrot humor is a bonus), and makes an immediate difference. Blanchard doesn't over-generalize, ramble on about a simple point, nor does she hide behind scientific parrot factoids (I have a couple of books on the factoids) or too many second-hand hearsay. Many of her observations strike a chord (and will be useful to complete novices and non-experts alike), such as her shower-shy African Grey who feared the water spray and how she got around it. My Jaco remains to this day shower-shy, the water spray being one of her arch enemies. I've ordered another book and sent it to my parents.
Perhaps the most important lesson that one gains from S. Blanchard's book is a correct attitude towards these cute & devilish buggas. Blanchard states that whereas dogs project unconditional love, with the parrot the emphasis is on conditional. Like golf which can ruin a perfectly good walk (to paraphrase M. Twain), parrots can ruin a perfectly calm existence. But what fun amidst the up-and-downs! I'm a scientist and therefore a harsh critic on what I perceive as dressed-up nonsense. This book is an unqualified gem. And the book contains but a couple of sentences that allude to ringnecks, my original problem.
A parrot can now come with an instruction book!!!.......2004-01-17
Where was this book when I got my first bird??? Concisive information from deciding if you want to be a parrot owner to selection, purchase, training...it's all right there. It should be a pre-req to buying a parrot! Beautifully written, it kept my 14 year old's attention. The whole family will benefit from reading this book. Even my husband who does not read, was caught flipping through this book! This book is useful from the novice to the experienced owner. Gives you some really useful tools in understanding Parrot behavior. This book is a must have if you want to truly get along with your bird.

Book Description
This richly illustrated book presents the Jeffrey Montgomery collection of traditional Japanese art, one of the foremost collections of this art in the world.
Superb examples of lacquerware and metalwork, basketry, textiles, furniture, masks, sculpture, paintings, toys and ceramics, are organized by medium in five sections. These utilitarian objects of everyday life date from the Muromachi period ((1392-1568) to the early Meiji period (1868-1912), and were crafted by hardworking artisans for farmers, fishermen, town merchants and upper-class elite. The pieces these artisans produced reflect honesty and respect for all things both animate and inanimate: all the objects in the collection possess a unique and inherent quality of timeless beauty.
The introduction written by Dr. Edmund de Waal, a potter and a writer whose works are held in many museum collections, focuses on the history of the appreciation of Japanese Folk arts in the West. Indeed, the influence of Japanese folk art on modernist design and on the growth of the craft movement within the West has been extremely important.
The book continues with extensive texts written by four highly respected Japanese art historians. The entries are divided into five sections: ceramics, textiles, metalworks, masks, and additional objects (furniture, toys, sculptures, etc.) The book includes a chronology, a map of Japan, and index and bibliography.

The tomatoes are growing!.......2001-06-19
I'll admit it, gardening has not gone smoothly for me. I have trouble keeping houseplants alive, largely due to neglect. I don't have time for a garden that requires more tending than my children. And I live in an apartment. But there's always been something about growing my own tomatoes that has appealed to me. So when I saw this book, I thought why not? It is a comprehensive guide to growing produce for your table, in small manageable beds or in containers. Just my speed. Plus, it's all organic. No dangerous and expensive chemicals to keep in the house, no worry about toxic overflow onto the neighbor's balcony below.
Three months later, I have plants growing on my balcony. Growing WELL on my balcony. Not just tomatoes, but radishes, cucumbers, lettuce and pole beans (we're still waiting on the watermelon, but we only planted it last week), mostly in plastic storage tubs with holes drilled in the bottom. We've actually eaten some of them--just like they were grown in a great big garden, with actual ground! The advice in this book is very easy to follow, from what to grow your container veggies in to what varieties to plant (and you can actually FIND these varieties, unlike the froufrou ones recommended in some books that have to be specially shipped from Asia or Europe) and how to harvest them once they've produced. There's a guide to pests (even containers get them) and suggestions for controlling them naturally. The only piece of advice you need that this book doesn't have is this -- if you don't have a compost pile (which is unlikely if you live in a second floor apartment), you can buy humus mixed with manure at your local garden center and it works just as well. Now, buy the book and start growing!
A well organized book full of helpful tips and guidelines.......2000-06-06
I would not say this is the difinitive "kitchen garden book." But it does have a plethora of information. While many gardening books give examples of vegetable plots, this is the first one that photographs the site and then numbers all the plants. It makes it very clear which plant is which instead of having to guess. The book is organized in a straightforward manner from the planning to harvest. Their reference section is extremely comprehensive. One of the sections that I found particularly easy to read is the Plant Selection Guide for both herbs and vegetables. All of the plants are lined up with their basic planting requirements: planting depth, sun/partial sun, zones, etc. There is an interesting array of receipts that I will have to try..."Pear, Watercresss, and Lentil Salad" and "Root Vegetable and Apple Stew." Overall, this is a solid vegetable gardening book with loads of advice especially on herbs.

VERY INFORMATIVE BOOK!.......2001-02-02
I have been "collecting" herbal books for a couple years now. I am a Master Gardener, and have been studying herbal medicine in various cultures. I would highly recommend this book for beginning herbalists. It has information on plant identification, how to grow and propagate herbs, identifying diseases and pests, and scientific information on different species. It also includes color pictures and sketches. It does'nt have a ton of herbs, but most of the more common ones used in gardens, and for potpourris.

Gorgeous bites of heaven!.......2002-05-27
While I consider myself to be an accomplished cook, I've never been all that good at baking...in actual fact most of the cakes and cookies I've ever baked have turned out to be inedible! This book, however, is a godsend and all the recipes turn out perfectly every single time. The results have been an absolute hit with my family, friends and dinner guests, and I'm sure you'll not be disappointed either. You have simply not lived if you haven't yet tried her 'Devil's food cake', a divine, rich chocolate cake. I also love the Cinnamon Buns, Zucchini and poppy seed loaf, Savoury Pumpkin Bread and Cheesecake Swirl Brownies.
The book does not restrict itself to desserts and has a small section on canapes and hors d'oeuvres. Try the Spicy Gougeres (a savoury version of a profiterole made with Gruyere cheese), the caramelized onion tarlets or the Pepper jam tartlets. Yum!
More than a book on baking..........2000-08-17
I bought this book and found myself as engrossed with the anecdotes and clever design layout as by the recipes. I read it cover to cover and then started baking. The recipes are simple to follow and yet emerge from the oven to rave reviews and requests for the recipe. To which I reply -- get your own book! This one won't sit on the shelf collecting dust. It will be up on the counter, spine nicely cracked, gathering flour and bits of chocolate in between the pages.

Book Description
The innovative work in design, typography, and content of music printer and publisher Ottaviano Petrucci (1446-1539) became the standard by which all following printers measured themselves. He created the defining moment when Italy took the lead in book printing in the Renaissance. This book is a bibliographic study of the output of the Petrucci presses, laying emphasis on the professional career of Petrucci. It includes a detailed study of technique and house-style, examining the market forces that drove Petrucci's publishing decisions, and provides a detailed catalogue of editions and copies. Stanley Boorman has made a study of the output of Petrucci's presses for 25 years. This long-awaited contribution to the field of bibliography will have an audience both in music and in rare book bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
Great book on Marbling.......1999-09-01
What keeps this from five-stars is that I have not seen any other book as comprehensive as this one.
The history portion seems exhaustive, and I began to keel over with the descriptions of what happens when you marble (the paints form a 'lip' with the carragheenan to prevent them from blending together), but the color plates are worth the price of the book alone.
There are facsimiles of old German marbling swatch books (which I'd love to get a copy of).
This book is for those who love marbled paper (and fabrics) and who want to know about the history. Might not be the best First Book on marbling, but the process is best learned in a classroom setting, IMHO.

This seventh edition of John Carter's classic text contains in-depth descriptions of every aspect of antique and modern book collecting from A to Z. All terms are alphabetized for quick reference, including how to take care of pigskin, morocco, or Russian leather, how to tell japon vellum from India proof paper and how to determine "very good copy" in a collectible volume. For first edition collectors, Carter's definition of "follow the flag" explains the historical issues surrounding first and native first texts. The book's pages are charmingly labeled, showing you exactly where the half-title and tailpiece are located and what a printer's imprint page looks like.
Customer Reviews:
Really informative, really helpful.......2006-09-23
This book can be hard to come by (you can order it from Amazon but just try to actually GET it from them--I gave up after 4 months and used an Amazon 3rd party seller). But it's worth hunting for. A wealth of information and handy reference volume for the serious collector and serious bookseller.
Auctions, book conditions, facsimiles and fakes, & more.......2004-07-16
Written by bibliographer John Carter (1905-1975), and originally published in 1952, this 232-page compendium of information and insights has long been considered the "how-to bible" for dedicated antiquarians, bibliophiles, and specialty lib-rarians with respect to locating, evaluating, and acquiring rare and out-of-print titles. Now in a completely revised, expanded, and re-set eighth edition, the ABC For Book Collectors is additionally enhanced with an informative introduction by Nicolas Barker (a personal friend of the late John Carter and the man who is responsible for the updates and revisions of this eighth edition). Among the subject authoritatively covered (and arranged in more than 490 alphabetically presented entries) are technical terms used in book collecting and bibliography; auctions, book conditions, facsimiles and fakes, "points", rarity, and more. This new addition provides up-to-date information on web-based book collecting (including eBay sales). The ABC For Book Collectors is a seminal and essential reference shelf component for dealers and collectors, and will prove of immense interest to authors, publishers, librarians, bibliophiles, bibliographers, and reviewers as well!
The first book a collector should read.......2003-07-05
Carter's book is not dated for me, but timeless. He has a droll and elliptical way of deflating the fatuous inclinations of book dealers. Yes, there is no index, and it is tough to find exact terminology sometimes. But this book is not a mere reference book, it is meant to be read and enjoyed and instruct you in the "what", but also the "why" and "how". Carter, in his manner and wit, shows a *way* of approaching rare books which I think is very healthy. His skewering of the term "mint condition" and his hilarious description of "issue mongers" have me revisiting this book for momentary pleasure again and again. I started in used books in a store about 8 years ago and when I was hired, my boss put this book in my hands. I have always appreciated that gesture. Any collector should find both pleasure and knowledge in this tome.
Subtle, accurate and funny, and indispensable for collectors.......2002-07-17
One of the earlier reviewers -- a history grad student -- noted that this book is "outdated and unorganized." Both of those claims are inaccurate. I'm a manuscripts curator by profession, and this text is certainly not outdated. Book knowledge, and the subtleties of collecting and discriminating among important texts, are the highest priorities of John Carter's book, and he imparts those things with great skill. Several reviewers also criticize the lack of an index or table of contents. Folks, it's an encyclopedia; each term has its own heading, in alphabetical order! The book IS the table of contents and the index. This book was required reading for the "Introduction to Descriptive Bibliography" calss when I first attended Rare Book School in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1998; I'm sure it still is.
It's important for historians (grad student or no) to familiarize themselves with this terminology. "All the terms and abbreviation in the book can be found on the Internet," notes the aforementioned grad student. Whoa! The great hulking trash barge that is the Internet does indeed pull up search terms for all of Carter's entries, but I don't trust them to be accurate. Many book-collecting terms are highly subjective ("first edition," for instance) and I'd never rely on an unvetted digital source for an accurate description if I knew nothing of the subject. You can trust John Carter's book. It should be handy on the bookshelf of every bibliophile. You'll find yourself reaching for it a lot. -Dan Lewis, Ph.D., Curator of the History of Science, the Huntington Library.
Almost great.......2002-04-05
Very informative, well written, witty and interesting. A good read for a reference book. Lack of an index keeps it from being a great book.
