Invaluable Disney World Guide.......2007-05-20

My first experience with the Unofficial Guide was back in 1993, when I was 16 and my parents took our family of five to Disney World around the holidays. My mom had bought the Unofficial Guide then to plan virtually all of our events and to this day (14 years later), I still remember how easy it was to hit all the favorite rides with relatively short lines.

It was for that reason that I ordered the 2006 edition of the Guide when it came time to take my family of three to Disney World while I was home on leave from Iraq in April of 2006. I was pleased to learn that it not only covered Disney World, but the Universal (and other) parks as well.

The trick to getting the most out of the book is convincing everyone in your party to follow it! We spent the first day at Universal's Islands of Adventure and had no problems, whatsoever, hitting all the great rides (that our 4-year-old was tall enough for) with short lines. That is, until my wife decided to get spontaneous and took our son in line for the Pteranodon Flyers ride, which wasn't on the tear-out plan at all. This ride gave new meaning to "Tourist Trap" - they spent about 1 1/2 hours waiting in a very slow line for an anticlimatic 60-second ride. It was a "there's 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back" event. When we got back to the hotel that night, I looked up the Pteranodon Flyers ride in the book and found the description matched exactly what we experienced with warnings not to waste any time on it.

My wife was much more inclined to follow the Guide's advice for the rest of the trip, and as a result, it was an awesome vacation. Thank you Mr. Sehlinger!

This guide used to be easy to read, and use. Now it seems like a confused overwritten GUIDE.

If you are only buying one guide... this is it!.......2007-03-09

I was very pleased with this guide. Due to an extremely low volume of visitors during our vacation, it was not necessary for us to use the touring plans. I was certainly prepared though! I read several guides before our trip and thought this was by far the most informative. If you are easily overwhelmed, this is NOT the book for you. The authors packed loads of info into one book. I was the star pupil on the shuttle bus when the driver gave us a quiz!

THIS IS THE ONE!!! DO NOT PLAN A DISNEY TRIP WITHOUT IT! The time and $ this book will save you will make its cost be totally irrelevant.
We started using our first version of this "Doing Disney Bible" about 9 years ago, when we first went to Disney. We have gone back to Disney five times since then, and have always purchase a revised edition of this same book! (Need I say more.) It will make your stay as pleasant as possible, given any time of year or condition that you may encounter. We purchase the revised edition each time, because, amazingly, so many things change at the parks, and therefore, so do their recommendations.
Due to their layout, It is so easy to pick and choose the information that is important to you. I WOULD NEVER WANT TO GO TO DISNEY WITHOUT THIS BOOK!

This book is a lifesaver!.......2007-01-10

We used this book religiously, following all its tips about how to see rides in the different parks. It also helped us decide which area to get a motel in, and what restaurants to eat at. When you only have a limited time to spend in each park, and especially when it's during the busy season, this is the book to use. It made our trip to Disney World fun, even when it was over 90 degrees out!

The Zen of Christian mysticism.......2006-09-11

The title "The Practice of the Presence of God" sums up the essence of this book. Brother Lawrence is a humble monk who discovers that, even in ordinary, secular, mundane activities (washing dishes, gardening, etc.), God is present. He even goes so far to say that prayer and meditation bring him no closer to the universal spirit than any other activity; through mindfulness, he is aware of God in everything he does. (Think Nirvana - extinguishing the flame of desire.) Proselytizing, evangelizing, and the usual arrogances that accompany many self-indulgent "believers" are absent. Br. Lawrence humbly strives to work for others and think only of God. That is all. He even cautions a recipient of one of his letters against sharing the note. (One feels almost unjust even reading his intimate spiritual thoughts.) But, fortunately for us, as this work is now ubiquitous, we may as well take note of his honorable life. He belongs in a small group of similar mystics (Mother Teresa of Avila, St. Augustine, Swami Vivekananda, Gandhi, Siddhartha, and Ramakrishna), who showed that through humility, love, and faith in the spirit, positive change can be made. This is an inspring book for people of all faiths.

A rare gem (spirituality).......2006-05-01

A rare gem (spirituality)

As a "follower of Christ" (Christian) who considers himself an Evangelical Protestant, this little devotional book will hold a special place in my library and my heart. For all Christian believers, the richness and power of Brother Lawrence's life's witness and words are a fountain of Truth, a treasure that is as elegant (spiritually) as it is simple. For the non-believers, I am afraid that reading this booklet (a spiritual treasure in disguise) will just confirm St. Paul the Apostles's words that "the message of the cross is ... foolishness to the Gentiles" (1 Corinthians. 1:18, 23 and 2:14).

The only way to do justice to this booklet is to quote from it and let you get a taste of it ...

This is a unique biography because it is not compiled by the Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection (birth name Nicholas Herman but known by his monastic name) but by the ones around his life in 17th century France. Thus one learns very little about the beginnings of his life but very much about his godly lifestyle in the last 30 years of life of bliss (presence of God in his heart) and suffering (3 physical and debilitating ailments).

We learn about this Spirit-filled vessel in God's vineyard - Brother Lawrence, by reading the Eulogy of the abbot of Lawrence's Christian community, 4 short notes of his conversations with his spiritual father - Abb? de Beaufort, 16 very short letters of spiritual advice and encouragement Brother Lawrence wrote to friends and seekers, a manuscript found at his death called "Spiritual Maxims" and a memoir of a leader in the church in France.

This little book changed my life forever!.......2004-05-26

I realized how lacking in trust my Christian faith was until I read this book and began truly practicing the presence of God. The remedy for every anxiety is contained in the Bible and this book. As an anxious person by nature, I was calmed, comforted, and encouraged by this book. I own a copy and refer to it weekly for strength, insight, and reminders that God loves us deeply and wishes to be united with us at all times, in all the tasks we are obligated to fulfill. Nothing is too small for the Lord and our time is made holy when it is spent communing with Him and His people.

Challanging Simplicity.......2000-10-28

The challange of Br. Lawrence's spirituality is its simplicity. The reader is presented with a common sense approach to the spiritual life the carries a great challange. The idea of carrying on an on going conversation with God wherever we find ourselves is the heart of this spirituality. The challange comes in when we attempt this in a world filled with distractions. This particular translation gives the reader more insight into the living out of "the Practice of the Presence of God." I find it a good source for those seeking a way to draw clser to God.

Another terrific collection.......2002-04-06

Illustrations primarily from 18th and 19th century sources. More period eagles and flags than you'll ever use. Military graphics mostly Revolutionary War and Civil War. Graphics scanned at 600 dpi and saved in BMP, EPS, GIF, JPEG, PICT, and TIFF formats. Just the ticket for national holidays, history buffs and lending a touch more of authenticity to your Civil War reenactment notices.

Ms. Gerson is a ground breaking author........2002-01-05

I feel that Ms. Gerson's book is truly ground breaking. Having written "Vintage Purses at Their Best" and "Vintage Compacts & Beauty Accessories" I can identify with how difficult it is to list, photograph and place values on items that are rare and unique--especially when there has not been much written on the subject previously.
Ms. Gerson was one of the first to do this.
In all fairness to her, I believe the title of her book "Vanity Bags and Purses" implied "Vanity Bags and (Vanity) Purses"--therefore creating some unintentional misunderstandings.
I would recommend any of her books to collectors and dealers alike.

Few purses, Many Vanity Bags.......2000-01-19

I have a large collection of vintage handbags which a local museum wanted to display, so I needed to establish values. This book was of no help as it is mostly vanity bags. I ordered this book because the other books listed for sale were too old to have current prices. I am still seeking a CURRENT book with prices to value my 100+ purses! Do not buy this book unless you want to learn more about vanity bags, as there is next to nothing about vintage (beaded or mesh) purses in this book!

I was disappointed, but it was my own fault. If I had seen the book before buying, I would have realized there was almost NOTHING about vintage purses, whuch is what I am interested in. However, there are more pictures of Vanity purses than I ever IMAGINED existed! The book is literally bursting with pictures of EVERY type of vanity bag imaginable. I found very little text except to describe the pictures, but if you collect vanity bags, you're certain to find a picture in this book similar to something in your collection. Unfortunetaly this wasn't much help for me.

A cookbook far beyond the norm.......2005-08-12

It's called "a gardening book for cooks and a cookbook for gardeners." David Hirsch has updated and revised this different and terrific cookbook. The subtitle ("Creative Gardening for the Adventurous Cook"), encapsulates quite nicely why this is a cookbook far beyond the norm. Written specifically to help in growing vegetables so that we can cook with them, each flower, herb or vegetable is accompanied by tips for its best use in the kitchen.

Published originally in 1992, the 2004 update includes more information, resources and recipes. The text is simple yet thorough, and is chock-full of tips, ideas, illustrations and charming anecdotes. In simple, straightforward text, Hirsch gives instructions for growing, harvesting, and cooking with over 75 vegetables and herbs.

The cookbook is accessible for beginners, while being complex and satisfying enough for more experienced gardeners. Chapters are devoted to gardening techniques, crop rotation, seed starting, and natural ways to defend against insects. Another chapter covers various kinds of gardens, from hillside, to walled patio, to container gardening, while the 70+ recipes will showcase the fruits of your labor and help transform them to the the pleasures of the table.

The recipes are delicious and comprehensive, from soups, dips and salads to appetizers and main dishes. Hirsch also includes information on cooking times and techniques, as well as the effective use of herbs (with advice for planting, compatibility and cooking). It is hard to pick favorites, but the Vegetable "Pasta", Summer Rolls, and Portuguese Kale Soup are among my favorites so far.

The recipes are not all vegan (although of course they are vegetarian), but vegan options can be substituted (soy cheese for non-soy, etc). A must have cookbook for gardeners and cooks alike.--By Lisa Steele

If you love the Moosewood cookbooks, you'll love this book........1998-04-18

This is an easy-to-use and easy to read book with helpful tips on not only selecting and growing, but cooking with your veggies, edible flowers and herbs. There is also a great list of mail-order sources with descriptions of supplies. I especially liked the design section for its simple and straightforward approach to considerations and approaches towards my garden layout.
