Blessed with an enormous capacity for risk-taking, a sense of humor, and an impressive knowledge of the remote corners of the world, Noland has designed both a paean to the art of travel and, for the daring, an informative how-to guide.

Ho hum.......2007-01-09

David Nolan's guidebook is described as "40 ultimate adventures for the modern nomad -- from crossing the Sahara to bicycling through Vietnam." And there's a chapter on Hawaii.
Nolan, a writer for Outside magazine, says a true travel adventure should have the traveler asking himself, at least once, "What the (blank) am I doing here?"
But that standard, the Hawaii chapter turns out to be pretty small beer. Nolan drives up Haleakala Highway on Maui, admires the dawn, then hikes down Sliding Sands Trail. He does not say how he got out, so I assume he went back up Sliding Sands.
If he had seen either Kaupo Gap or Switchbacks (Halemau`u), he probably would have mentioned it.
Or perhaps not. This is a man who has hiked Nepal and Kilimanjaro. He has seen scenery.
Though he says you can have fun in Hawaii "hiking the out islands" (Where did he get that? The local term is "Neighbor Islands."), he rates it low on challenge.
On his scale of one to five, hiking in Hawaii rates only a two or three for physical challenge, one to three for mental challenge and one for skills needed.
So take the Hawaiian hiking vacation first. Put off the rafting trip down the Omo River in Ethiopia for later, in case you pick up blackwater fever and don't make it back.
Actually, hiking in Hawaii can be exciting, though the guided tours are safe enough. Nolan does not mention the unguided hikers who vanish, whose bones are found in the tops of tall trees or whose bodies are found by accident by searchers looking for somebody else.
"Travels Along the Edge" doesn't do much to give Hawaii a reputation as an exotic land of danger, but it has a frank introductory section on traveling outside the resort system.
Parts of it appear to be pitched to morons. While advising edge travelers to bring hiking boots, Nolan tells a tale of a woman who showed up for a trek in Nepal without them.
Well, I've seen a German go down Switchbacks (a sheer cliff about 1,500 feet high) in slippahs (zoris), running.
That's an adventure.

The appendix alone makes the book a good buy. It is useful in helping you assess the best season to travel, what the mental and physical challenge is for any given destination, and the skills needed. I also enjoyed the authors dry humour, i.e. when he recalls the "what the f*ck am I doing here?" moments of his adventures.

Important book 4 those considering overseas adventure travel.......1998-08-22

This book describes possible travel adventures in five quadrants of the world (North America, South America, Europe & the Middle East, Asia & the Pacific, and Africa). Each quadrant is broken down into 8 travel adventures which take place in different states or countries. The travel essays (which are short) consist of either some of the author's experiences (very helpful & enlightening information) or a historical or cultural story about the area (not very helpful, in my opinion). At the end of each travel essay, the author 1) compares different outfitters, 2) let's you know what to expect (i.e., physical and mental demands as well as necessary skills, if any), 3) lists books for further research on the area, 4) gives a breakdown of the outfitters (cost, phone#, length of trip), and 5) indicates the physical challenge, mental challenge, and skills ratings for the trip.

At the beginning of the book, the author has some very helpful chapters about choosing a trip, choosing an outfitter, and getting ready for a trip.

This book was very helpful for me in starting research for an overseas adventure trip. It describes all kinds of activities and trip variations. It really got me thinking and planning. The descriptions of the outfitters were very helpful too (I have found a web page for nearly each outfitter--that would have been helpful to include in the book); with so many outfitters available, it was helpful to have a few well-known names to begin with. Most of the reading was quite entertaining and informative.

I'm glad I bought this book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a well-written/organized book which describes numerous activities/trip variations which are possible in a variety of interesting destinations around the world. I did not give it five stars, because I was disappointed in a few of the chapters which had historical/cultural stories instead of the author's or another traveler's impressions of the region.

Witty, humorous exploration of some really cool trips........1997-10-15

Loved it! Noland makes "adventure travel" real for the armchair explorer. In the spirit of Redmond O'Hanlon, this book describes the ups and downs of moving beyond the conveniences of the 20th century.

C'est tres bon.......2007-09-07

I have found the Traveller's French course fantastic. I had absolutely no French when I started and now after only 5 weeks feel very confident that I will be able to ask directions, order food and be generally polite when I travel this month. I have found that just listening to the tapes was great for pronounciation but a little bit of writing out the phrases was needed to lock them into my memory. This will not be reqired for most people though. The pocket phrase book is also going to be very handy and is a great size too. Overall very pleased with my purchase.

The images of these large windows (churchs, etc) are beautiful but the description of the book did not explain this. I had ordered the book for small glass projects. I decided to keep the book since I might get an idea for a small panel but probably not.

Great variety of basic designs. Print quality of book is not the greatest, but if you're used to blowing up your designs and working with them, this will be just fine. This is a very good book for a collection.

This book contains hundreds of interesting patterns covering the periods of Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, the 1930s, and the 1940s. It is a quite nice collection encompassing a large variety of shapes and varying in complexity from quite simple to truely eleborate.

While I appreciate the psychological advice on just how to break the news of a dead parakeet to a family member, I really required more practical information - like what temperature is best for a healthy bird... or say... should I get a cuddle bone? The book does mention to keep your bird's cage out of direct sunlight (wouldn't the bird enjoy a little sun in the winter?) and to keep him out of drafts (in the summer wouldn't a nice breeze be appreciated?) I felt the book needed to concentrate more on actual facts instead of generalities & add more photos diagramming wing clipping & nail trimming.

Helped me choose my parakeet.......2005-04-28

Although I had done a lot of research on the internet before purchasing my parakeet...I prefer to say adopt, actually...this book gave me so much more information! It told me what kind of parakeets you shouldn't get--the ones that hang back in the cage, make watery poops, and dash away from your hand. I got one that came up to me and cheeped. You should get this book for it is chock-full of information, but also try tons of other books and do research on the web. After all, you DO want to be the greatest pet owner for your parakeet, right? I suggest you take the little "quiz" in the front of the book to see if you're ready for a parakeet before taking further actions.

Not new material..........2005-01-02

THE ESSENTIAL PARAKEET looks very much like an earlier book about Budgies by Julia Rach. Many of the photos are identical (Renee Stockdale). The publisher is the same publisher. The difference seems to be the book jacket and the word Parakeet instead of Budgie.

This Parakeet book includes much of the same material on cage specifications, diet, and other considerations concerning the health and maintenance of Budgies, found in the earlier book by Rach. So what is the difference between a Parakeet and a Budgie? According to the editor, Americans call Budgies "Parakeets." "Not all Parakeets are Budgies", says the editor, Budgies are a specific species with a Latin name `Melopsittacus undulatus' or the "song-parrot with wavy lines." Sometimes these little birds are called "grass parakeets" in their native Australia. I don't think the book is a very helpful source of information about why Parakeets are different from Budgies. Maybe their is no difference. Maybe a Budgie by any other name is still a swell bird. Get Rach's book and you won't need this book.

This is a look into the collectibles that were made for the Salem Witch tourist trade. Silver items that are coveted and never found are in this book to make collectors aware of items thatthat we can covet. It makes one wish one could go back in time and buy some of these gems. History of the items as well asas the trials themselves. With more and more items coming up on the internet and misidentified this book should help one and all.

I had a few unusual witch items from Salem in my collection but until I purchased the book Salem Witchcraft and Souvenirs I had no ideaa just how many things were out there available to collectors like me! It is a valuable reference book with sharp photography showing P. Apkarian-Russell's vast collection and those of others. Anyone collecting witch items or interested in the history of Witchcraft Hysteria in Salem would be intrigued with this unique topical from Schiffer.

Outstanding Magnolia References.......2007-09-20

This is a fabulous reference for owners of magnolia trees and all persons considering planting a magnolia at any time in the future. This book will give you detailed information on habit, growth rate and hardiness that is a level of specificity well above most nurseries. My only wish was for more pictures, there seem to be multiple pictures of a few select species but none for the majority of those listed in the book. However, the title includes "A gardener's guide" rather than "Encyclopedia" so I did not feel misled.

The book is a very thorough examination of the genus magnolia, both species and hybrids, with chapters on history, cultivation, propagation, pests and an excellent section on which species and hybrids to choose for your garden.

While not for the casual gardener, I found much to recommend to any serious gardener considering an ornamental tree.

This is no doubt the authoriative text on the subject and a very interesting read.

A Little Faith in a Great God.......2007-08-10

I was so inspired to read this biography! This man was the founder of the Sudan Interior Mission, and countless other projects. His life was devoted to serving the Lord and the Lord's people, and reaching the lost for Christ. When he was burdened with a need, he didn't bewail the fact that there was no group anywhere paying attention that he could associate with. He was a man of action, and when faced with a need, he found something to do about it. Living in comfort was not a priority to him, and change did not terrify him. His life was also characterized by determination, daring, sacrifice, and love for and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

I think his life can be summarized in a paragraph from this biography. He was concerned for the countless men heading into World War II, and wanted a way to reach the unsaved soldiers and encourage the believing ones. The authors state: "The fact that it was yet another ministry that had no ongoing financial backing did not worry either of them [Rowland or his wife]. Rowland often told people that he did not have a great deal of faith, but that he had a little faith in a great God, and that great God would not let His causes fail."

God is still the same God today. If He has placed a burden on us in a particular area, and there is no existing solution visible, He can work through us to accomplish His purposes. I was so inspired by the life of Rowland Bingham to look around, and put my life to work where the Lord shows me I should, doubting nothing.

I encourage you to read this biography, and see the power of God in a man's life.

Nice coffee table book about a single house.......2005-07-20

Ken Tate's firm designs new houses along classical lines - this one is a French inspired estate built in a small Mississippi town. The photos are nice and include images of the house inside and out as well as the grounds. Numerous photos show small details of the design and workmanship. Simple floor plans as well as elevations of the house and details are included. Credits are provided for craftsmen and companies that did much of the work. I'ts nice to see that someone still cares about the details and craftsmen are still arround to build something like this even in an out of the way location.

This is a strong book for strong professionals. People using QuarkXPress for four hours a day will benefit from this title, as it teaches complex methods to complete complex tasks. However, QuarkXPress Unleashed's straightforward format will remove days or weeks of trial-and-error.

The guide introduces XPress Tags within the first few pages--a discussion usually left until the middle of QuarkXPress books that are geared toward less brave readers. QuarkXPress Unleashed also covers troubleshooting and how-to, but its real charm is in the deep integration of both built-in QuarkXPress features and controls found only in XTensions. Brad's book is the first one, and usually the only one I reach for when I have a question about the best way to do something with XPress. He has many years of experience with the program and his expertise shows. The topics are organized well, the examples are clear, and the explanations thorough. This book is well worth looking for!
