There's always a risk involved whenever the promise of "greatest" is dropped into a title. Simply "great" or just "outstanding" won't cut it when the superlative is the target being cast to. Given that this is a collection of fish tales both fictional and factual, a little truth-stretching wouldn't be unexpected, but veteran outdoors editor Lamar Underwood will have none of that; he tries to wriggle off the hook anyway, admitting his choices won't always match expectations. He didn't need to. His collection of 28 stories, covering fishing in its various forms, more than delivers on the titular pledge of utmost excellence.
Just look at the contributors. Some, like A.J. McClane, John Gierach, Robert Traver, Roderick L. Haig-Brown, Nick Lyons, Ernest Schweibert, and Philip Wylie are firmly mounted in the pantheon of angling lit, while others--Hemingway, Thomas McGuane, Patrick O'Brian, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and Zane Grey--are acknowledged trophy scribes. Their range--both as writers and anglers--is superb, and if the pieces aren't necessarily the writer's most famous or best, they are certainly, as a group, representative, beautifully written, and diverse in their approach. Not surprisingly, it's British Columbia's Renaissance man, Haig-Brown, who reels in the line of the book. If you want to read a wonderful novel of many stories you should read The Greatest Fishing Stories Ever Told. Lamar Underwood has collected 28 unforgettable fishing stories. These stories have been collected by some of the best authors in the world. You go from trout fishing in Colorado to tarpon fishing down in the gulf. Bass fishing in Florida to catching pike in Canada.
Lamar Underwood has done a great job in properly putting these stories together. He is able to write the art of fishing.
Some great authors that are in this novel are Patrick O' Brian writing "The Return," Ben East writing "Bruisers of the Weed Bed," and my favorite, Robart Traver writing "The Intruder."
In the end this book is worth its money. It might be a little long, but it gives you a great picture in your mind. Lamar Underwood's The Greatest Fishing Stories Ever Told is a great novel.
Greatest? Not Quite........2005-06-05
I was somewhat disappointed by this book and I think it was because the title built it up too much for me. It was a good book and had good stories, but not the greatest ever told. As a matter of fact, most fishermen have told or at least heard better stories than these. Storytelling and fishing just sort of go together. You have to be able to stretch a pretty good fish tale if you're a fisherman. I think it's a requirement. All of that being stated, I did find some of the stories pretty interesting and do recommend it to those who enjoy both fishing and reading. There is a great story about Tarpon fishing and another by Zane Grey, when he caught a Marlin. Those are both worth reading. Another thing the book does is stress fly fishing. It almost seems to be saying that Fly fishing is the only real fishing. I am afraid I would have to disagree. I do have a new appreciation for this method, though, and feel a need to learn more about it. Maybe that was the author's intent.
The Essence of Fishing.......2001-06-07
Great book. Several short and long stories from real anglers with the ability to write about the intangibles of fishing. You can smell the salty air, see the tranquility of the streams, feel the excitement of the fury on the end of your line, just by reading this book. Some are little known authors, but they pack a heck of a punch. This is not a how to book! This is fishing! Lamar Underwood has done a masterful job of finding these jewels and making a enchanting read!

Best American English Dictionary ever!.......2007-03-26
Whenever I want to know what the "TRUE" definition of a word is (not some politcally-correct, smoothed-over definition you find in current dictionaries), I go to this great treasure. Every American home should have one of these jewels, and it should be kept front and center somewhere, preferably displayed open so that it can be accessed and used readily (it will tend to get used more often that way too). Yes, it is kind of expensive, but how much are truthful and accurate word definitions worth to you? In a day and age where people are making up their own definitions to suit themselves (example; remember Bill Clinton saying ".... it all depends on what your definition of "is" is!? Lawyers also like play free and loose with words.), it is more necessary than ever before. This book will take you back to the roots of truth this country was founded on.

It's hard to believe that this book is worth buying when so many "reviewers" praise it but can't spell worth a hoot. Examples: origional (original), comman (common), sentance (sentence), schollar (scholar), entamological (??? from etymology (study of word origin) or entomology (study of insects)???), diferent (different), supprised (surprised), through for thorough, referance (reference), pouring for poring, it's for its and excelent (excellent). Whew! These reviewers need to actually LOOK UP SPELLINGS and not just worry about the moral decay of the American-English language! I hope Noah's spelling wasn't this bad!

This is one dictionary that all seeking to better understand the Bible should have. Its introductory 'green pages' are worth the price of the volume alone; the rest is a wonderful bonus!

This is an owner's manual suitable for anyone that loves their schipperkes as much as I do. It is concise and easy to read. Gives the reader much information on the care, feeding, housing, love, medical well-being, and play for the owner of these dogs. A beautiful book with stunning photographs and information. I have many copies. And about time too!I love my little Schip, Jobey, and this book helped me understand his history, how to train him, and most importantly, how to care for him. Every word in this book about these quirky little animals is true, from stubborn to smart! I love this book!
I love Schipperkees!.......2002-01-10
Being one of few dog breed books on the wonderful Schipperkee, I think that this one is the best! Much better that the "Darwin" version. The pictures are classic Schipperkee, the cover picture is identical to my "Schippee"! I go along with much of what is written as far as training, feeding and temperment of this breed. I love the price and the paperback availability. It about time!

Fastastic Voyage.......2007-03-06
While the stories captivated me and Muilenberg's pacing kept me turning page after page to find out what happens next, the passages that gripped me the most were his descriptions of the natural beauty of the Caribbean. His astonishment at the colors and awesomeness and the astounding beauty of the natural world resonated with my own experience, although I could not have described it as poetically as he has. I read this book in St. John and so could observe directly some of the sights he describes; reading his stories deepened my own pleasure in being in that special part of the world. A superbly enjoyable read.
tougher critic.......2007-02-02
I found Peter's writing wonderful, and enjoyed his sailing stories. My reason for three stars is that more than half the stories center around his dog, saving his dog, his dog's bark, etc. etc.
Funny, Inspiring, Thrillseeker's Dream.......2006-11-29
WOW! I only wished I had boarded Breath on my recent visit to St. John. I am speechless. Your stories, your life, your finishing of your mast, even your skipperkee. Smelling the Lignum Vitae and sensing it smelling of wood but responding/sounding like stone. I am now another devoted and enlisted friend. Remarkable, how you have come to tell the story, brilliant story-teller, by the way. Loved your writing style. Funny, inspiring, authentic and thrilling all in one.
The stories..I loved each and everyone of these. Of course the story of Denton Bridge and survival and your dog Santos had to be the most amazing of all. Also of Dorothy's commitment as a partner, spouse, mother, teacher who allowed you to live out your dream and to keep you grounded and supported, albeit, not always to her liking.
This is real life on the seas. Thanks for sharing and caring.
Magical prose reflecting on excellent adventures.......2006-10-13
The first time I picked up Peter's excellent work I flipped open to the middle and began reading about guerillas in Venezuelan mountains, and thought to myself, "This isn't something I want to read about." I laid it back down. Shame on me! I almost missed a real treat. Recently, I was given a copy as a going away present before moving back stateside from the Virgin Islands, and from the time I opened it on the ferry ride from St. Thomas to St. John I scarcely laid it down, save to sleep. I found myself totally mesmerized by Peter's magically descriptive prose that indelibly imprinted on my mind's eye scenes of the excellent adventures he shares here. His unique perspectives on life aboard his homebuilt sailing vessel, Breath, sailing around the Caribbean and beyond,from the miraculous recovery of his boat dog, Santos, after losing him at sea, to raising his sons on a boat had me alternately laughing out loud and then in tears. The lively manner with which he shares his stories, as if talking to a close friend, captivated me, and his anecdotes re-conjured for me the essence of the sea faring life that I have so loved. Thank you, Peter, for sharing your sojurn with us all.
Sail away! Sail away! Sail away!.......2006-07-15
I thoroughly enjoyed ADRIFT ON A SEA OF BLUE LIGHT. Peter Muilenburg's writing style, and the very words themselves drew me into the boat and onto the sea with Peter and his family. Sometimes I would read the chapters to my husband, prefaced with "Listen to how eloquently he words this!" or "Listen to this story!". My husband jumped on board, reading the book himself, enjoying it equally. We had our own Book Club!
We have ourselves enjoyed a few visits to St John (camping at Cinnamon Bay, Maho, and Concordia) and were therefore able to picture some of the scenes about which Peter wrote.
For those of us land locked souls, the book takes us to sea, and alas, I was sad when the last page was read and our voyage with Peter and his family came to an end.

good basic information for the breed.......2005-10-17
I was surprised to see Robert Pollet, a French specialist in BSDs and Schipperkes, writing a book for the UK/English language pet/show market. I met him over 20 years ago at the Paris Specialty for the Belgian breeds (all 4 BSD varieties and the Schipperke as well). He has a good solid grounding in the breed and its behaviour and the book addresses many of the basic backgrounds and problems in the breed. He was astute enough to utilize photographs of UK bred dogs for the main, so I would think that this book would do well with the pet market here in the UK, as it has been many years since a book was written about the breed. The standard laid out in the book is the UK Kennel Club's Breed standard for the breed.

A must have for all Schipperke owners. The best source for Schipperke Care, History, Breed Standard, Founding Stock, etc.
The most definitive book about the Schipperke available........1997-11-12
The Complete Schipperke is an excellent book about the breed, containing many photographs of notable Schipperkes and fanciers, and information about Kennels which have made significant contributions to the breed. I dispute the previous review; the Officers and Board of Directors of the Schipperke Club of America exercised diligent oversight of all the contents of the book, including the chapter describing the Ideal Schipperke. As in Conformation judging, some fanciers disagree, to a greater or lesser extent, about some of the information presented. Such disagreement does not make the information incorrect. Material for the book was solicited from a wide cross section of fanciers, including members of the Schipperke Club of America, and other fanciers of the breed. And since the emphasis is on the Schipperke in America, and the book was authored by the Schipperke Club of America, the content is predominantly focused on Schipperkes and kennels in America. After the final draft was approved in its entirety, errors made by editors and layout personnel at the publisher resulted in some photographs being mis-placed, and the entire half of the frontispiece photograph, containing the Schipperke, being deleted. There were also some minor errors in transcription of some pedigrees. However, viewed in its entirety, this is an outstanding resource book for those wanting accurate information about the Schipperke in America. I am a member of the Schipperke Club of America, and currently serve as President.
Some erroneous information--revisional text is questionable.......1997-09-16
The Complete Schipperke is the most eclectic text so far on the Schipperke Breed. However, some content that is a matter of public record is incorrect. This is confusing and misleading when dealing with bloodlines and pedigrees.
The portion of the book that covers the Ideal Schipperke, was written by an individual/s, without Schipperke Club of America's oversight.
Several portions of this new "Ideal" text make drastic changes to qualities that are "unique" to the Breed.
In earlier editions, this particular text, written by the breed's human "cornerstones", has never come into question.
Material for the book was limited to the Schipperke Club of America Membership, in the main, therefore it is substantially misleading by non-disclosure of this fact, within the Fancy.
I am a member of the "SCA"--then and now--incorrect pedigrees referenced at least one of my dogs.
Coverage of my kennel history is erroneous. Others were also disturbed or disenchanted with the final product

You can always tell a book that's been written by someone who knows what (s)he's talking about--and Edward Heddy obviously does. This is a fun, friendly, interesting read. It's a little like having a very helpful, very congenial expert mason by your side as you build. Full of tips only a professional could offer, this book is an invaluable resource for the DIYer. If you're interested in bricklaying and your can get your hands on this book, do!

This is a good introduction to brick and masonry projects around the house. it was written by a retired masonry contractor in a very easy to read manner that inspires confidence. Highly recommended.

I thought this book included some F/Xs but when opening the book I realised the book does not include any tips and tricks of F/X. Anyhow, for a beginner this book can be useful but for an advanced user it's useless.

Beautiful Compilation.......2006-01-13
I was raised in Washington, DC so this book is particularly close to my heart. It chronicles more than 300 years of black history in the nation's capital. From stories about slavery to the March on Washington, DC has a strong and varied African American history. It is arranged chronologically, with interesting tidbits and mini profiles on the sides. The pictures alone tell a wonderful story. A great addition to any history buff's shelf!

Remembering my past.......2003-09-29
Thank you Dr. Holmes and Dr. Lester for this exciting, informative and historical book. I was raised in the South (LA) and experienced many of the conditions described in Fire in My Soul. Remembering my blessings on this journey, I give thanks for all of my past experiences. My parents attempted to sheild me from many of the conditions of the south and in turn I was shielded from much of the history of the Civil Rights Movement of the 60's except for limited TV coverage. Fire in My Soul serves as a personal history lesson for me and is one that I will read more than once. Reading about the personal experiences and the 'inner' workings of the local, state and federal agencies that Dr. Holmes was/is a part of reminded me of many personal experiences in the private sector. Reading Fire in My Soul remeinded me that the absence of compassion for another person is not isolated to any specific location or sector of the nation. Reading the story of one who continues to live her passion for justice offers the encouragement to do what I can where I am for justice.

In Fire in My Soul, Dr. Lester accomplishes a rare feat for a biographer. While she avoids the trap of painting too pretty or too perfect a picture of her subject, including a number of descriptions that are less than flattering, she is at the same time able to clearly allow her respect and admiration for this remarkable woman to come through.
The effect is that we see a real life heroine, warts and all, and we find her all the more admirable for this.
This is an important book, and I look forward to Dr. Lester's next effort.
The Honorable Congresswoman Holmes Up Close and Personal.......2003-07-16
Joan Steinau Lester and Eleanor Holmes Norton met as college classmates at Antioch College in 1958. They became friends and marched together in civil rights marches in New England. Now forty-five years later, Ms. Steinau Lester, now a journalist/writer reunites with Congresswoman Holmes Norton in writing her biography in Fire In My Soul.
Congresswoman Holmes Norton's great grandfather, Richard John Holmes, escaped from Virginia into Washington D.C. to become a free man and elude his former owner. He eventually became one of the few black firemen in the nation's capital and persevered to become a sergeant in the department. He felt a black man was worthy of equal opportunity and it is no surprise she inherited some of her great grandfather's fire for justice. With a legacy such as this, having descended from a strong, middle-class background, it is little wonder that she pursued a career in law that would one day put her in the limelight.
Already involved in civil rights activities, the Congresswoman, while a Yale Law School student, went to Mississippi in June 1963 to join the voter registration drive as a SNCC member. Twenty-four hours later Medgar Evers was dead, victim of an assassination and Holmes Norton had to make quick decisions concerning other members who were being falsely arrested. After law school, she obtained a clerkship with Judge A. Leon Higginbotham, Jr., the first black district court judge, in Philadelphia. She then met her future husband, Edward Norton, also an attorney, a man who was secure enough to not be threatened by her status or activities.
Holmes Norton's status did indeed rise as she ventured further into her profession as an attorney, became more involved with civil and human rights, and eventually going into politics. Her life was not always smooth. Her daughter, Katherine, was born with Down's Syndrome; however, she resisted health specialists advice to institutionalize her when she got older. She was very devoted to her.
This reviewer had the opportunity of seeing the Congresswomen twice this year. She is as formidable a presence in person as she is in the media. Her stature commands respect and her sense of belief in pursuing and preserving the rights of human life comes across instantaneously. She is a cheerleader for the people of Washington D.C., who she represents with candor and is respected by them as she respects them. This was a well-written biography of a powerful woman.

I don't usually read political biographies, but this one gave me the hope I was searching for in the face of the depressing political realities of today. It's inspiring to read about a fiercely intelligent woman who follows her inner moral compass while compromising when necessary to get things done. I wish everyone serving in Congress had to read this book. Every voter should as well!

This fascinating biography is not only a pager turner, it also an insightful discourse on how to be an agent of change. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who is grappling with issues of how to change policy, whether as an "insider", "outsider", or hybrid. It is also an inspirational story of an terrific woman. I couldn't put it down.
