I have now read this book for both Glacier and Rocky Mountain National Parks. They are fun for adults and great for getting children to notice the "signs" around them. I highly recommend this book.

A Small Jewel.......2002-12-30

This small field guide supposedly covers from Colorado/Utah north to the Canadian border, but many of the animals illustrated also range into the Pacific Northwest, western Canada and California, so this book is useful for most of western North America. There are two pages for each of the 70 mammals, birds and reptile/amphibians. Every animal has a small-scale range map, overall sketch, sketch of its droppings, large sketch of forward and rear footprints and a sketch of the pattern left by several footprints. I found the latter especially useful since many times the individual tracks are not too clear, especially in sand or dry snow, but the track pattern provides a positive identification. This lightweight, pocket-sized format makes it convenient to carry. Highly recommended for hikers, campers and nature buffs.

Sure! It's loaded with new age stats(AOPS,ABR,AERA,RNG,BFW).But are you looking to see why Reggie Jackson was called Mr.October? Well don't look under his entry in the Batter Register. As a matter of fact don't look anywhere in this book because players AL/NLCS or World Series stats ARE NOT listed! Want to look up some post season facts? Your search begins on page 1631 and ends on page 1634! No line scores for Playoff or World Series games! The post-season section is no more comprehensive than you would find in the World Almanac! Not what I'm looking for in a Baseball encyclopedia. If you've ever spent an hour or two just getting lost in your old MacMillan encyclopedia flipping back from section to section, don't expect this cheap imposter volume to re-create that feeling.

The Texas Rangers have alternately been described as "fearless men of sterling character" and "ruthless, brutal, and more lawless than the criminals they pursued." The truth, says Robert M. Justice for Texas Justice.......2007-09-16

Until this book the best book on the Texas Rangers was he Webb book. Utley is a modern historian and those who prefer to live in the past in their culture will be disappointed in this book. It is a modern rendition for modern readers. That is not to say it is weak in research or in bringing the past to life. What I mean is this book is written in the now and doesn't adhere to the old rules of whitewash.

A major benfit of this work is the ointroduction to many of Edmund J. Davis, cast as the worst governor in Texas history. A Reconstruction governor responsible for the formation of the Texas Rangers as a force to enforce Reconstruction policy as he saw it and fight the elements that became the Ku Klux Klan.

This is a refreshing and interesting work on the taming of the old west.

Justice Done.......2007-08-02

The book is not only quite detailed in the description of the exploits of the early Texas Ranges, it maintains the air of education without the normally associated dullness or boredom found in many textbooks.
Mr. Utley paints a straight-forward, no-holds approach to telling the facts as he has found them. Gone are the visions that our hero's of old are without fault, quite the opposite, you find that our hero's from this era are simply common men with some interesting virtues and a belief that right is right. It would be rather refreshing to find some of this level or morals in today's society.
The book is an excellent read. One any Texican-file will find quite interesting.

Best Book Ever on the Early History of the Texas Rangers.......2007-02-18

Having just read Utley's second volume on the rangers, Lone Star Lawmen (I read this book when it came out), and found it a worthy sequel to this one, excellent in every way, I decided to see what Amazon readers had said about the first volume, Lone Star Justice. It appears that some folks don't like giving up cherished myth and folklore in favor of real history. And there are one or two who have well-formed PC prejudices against the Rangers, and are equally unhappy when presented with real history; they are like those who condemn an actor for portraying a villain (so to those I say, if you don't like the Rangers, don't take it out on Utley; he's not one, he just tells their story, and it is unfortunate that the truth does not conform to your suppositions). Those readers who appreciate accurate history, well written and meticulously documented, have given Lone Star Justice five stars. So do I. This is an excellent book, rigorously accurate, always interesting, full of dramatic incidents and memorable characters arrayed in their context. If you are interested in the history of Texas, the West, law enforcement, or just a good read, you'll enjoy this book. Better yet, get the set--Lone Star Justice and Lone Star Lawmen, and follow the history from beginning to the present.

Quite imbalanced.......2005-04-26

The problem with this book, aside from the fact that it's just a rehash of the last dozen or so Ranger histories, is Utley's bizarre fascination with racism: namely, all Texas Rangers are evil racists whose actions can only be explained by racism. Case in point:

Rangers are after a Mexican bandit who killed a Ranger. They find two mexicans and try to halt them, whereupon the two take off, then ambush and kill a Ranger. Utley breaks in and says, Oh that's okay. They were scared that the racist rangers would have hung them.

The Brownsville incident, where the black Army troops shoot up the town? Utley concurs that they probably did it--but, the town was full of racists, so they were justified.

Every single event involving the Rangers in this book is written off as racist fervor. This PC attitude, frankly, is just sickening.

Only in the last few pages does Utley mention that we should keep an open mind about the subject; but by then, the reader has probably thrown the book away in disgust, or come out of it thinking the Texas Rangers were the militant wing of the KKK.

A rip roaring account.......2005-01-18

For those who know little of the rangers but are western enthusiasts or simply interested in the American West, this is a wonderful action packed rip roaring account of the Texas rangers. The volume spands the time frame from Texas independence in 1836 through to the 1900s. The Mexican war is covered as are conflcits with Mexican bandits, and the Comanches, as well as the norms of frontier justice. This reads like a novel, but brought to you by famed historian Utley its all true and what more the writing is fantastic. This makes a wonderful present.

Excellent design source in COLOR!.......1999-04-24

This is part of the Dover pictorial archive collection, so the whole book is designs. The bit I like about this book is that the designs are in color, so you can see variations in light and dark colors, color combinations, colors receeding and coming forward, etc.

Some designs are done using just the tile shape, and some depend on designs painted onto the tiles. Some are very bold and simple designs and some are very flowery. Appears to be a good mix of designs from around the world and throughout time.

Well worth the price!

I picked up this book when I was trying to find out which dog I wanted after narrowing down my choices. This book is pretty general and doesn't go into much detail. I still look at it once in a while, but still, if you're looking for a lot of information about the Mini Schnauzer, you're only going to find general info in here.

The Essential Miniature Schnauzer.......2002-06-28

This is the best book about Miniature Schnauzers that I have read. A friend gave us a Schnauzer and this book fits him like a glove. It would be a wonderful addition to the family library even if you don't have a Schnauzer. It's really all you need to know.

For [a few dollars] more, you can get the same info in "The Miniature Schnauzer : Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet".

I'm a new Miniature Schnauzer owner and I wanted to get all the info I could about these guys. So, I ordered both the books and read this one first. Then, I picked up the larger "...Owner's Guide..." and was very disappointed, since after a couple of sentences it was "deja vu all over again". When I finally read the fine print inside the jacket I found that this is an abridged version of the larger book. Hence the "Essential...." handle. The two books sound like they have different authors but not really. The "et al" portion is not well defined. In reality, the "et al" are part of the committee that authored the larger book. Oh well, its a small dog isn't it?

Neither of the books go into the kind of detail I was looking for. For example, I wanted to know how to clip this guy, but all it "essentially" says is to take it to your groomer and ask questions...as if they want you around while they're buzzing your little guy or girl.

This book, as is often the case with this kind of book, emphasises on winning dogs in Britain and a few other countries. But the part of the book that is really really excellent is the grooming and training-part. If you read and study this groomingmanual well than you'll be able to strip and groom your schnauzer all by yourself! Have fun doing it!

Good book, includes KC, AKC, FCI commented standars.......1999-06-15

The autor, who is a recognised British breeder, guide us into a comparision of the different breed standars (KC, AKC, FCI). Mr. Newman emphasise on the development of the mini schnauzers into the United Kingdom, includes a section on grooming plenty of photos, show training, and others. Also a review of the most influential British kennels is included. It is a good complement for the Kiedrowski's Book.

I've purchased a number of container gardening books and this if far and above my favorite! The authors style is "comfortable" yet informative and the actual diagrams for the planting layouts are exactly what I was looking for. If you're just starting on container gardening this is the book for you. If you're an expert you will still get some grand ideas to make your own.

An Excellent Resource for the Novice Container Gardener.......2004-04-16

Contain Yourself offers a clever way to teach gardeners to break out of the "marigold/impatien" cycle through creative "recipes" for container gardens featuring more color, height and texture than most novices are able to do on their own.

By presenting the material in this fashion, Ouellet gives the reader the tools to ultimately be able to create his or her own container masterpieces by using portions of multiple recipes. In essence, the reader learns new techniques as the book progresses. Once the basic techniques are learned, gardeners should be able to design beautiful gardens on their own.

The book includes care instructions for containers (which need more frequent watering than traditional gardens) and information on the growing habits of the plants used in the designs. While it's true that there is not a huge variety of containers used (as noted by another reviewer), how many households have endless supplies of different containers? I rather like the lesson taught that any one container may be used in many different ways.

More seasoned gardeners might find the text and instruction somewhat remedial. Even so, it's a beautiful book with excellent content for anyone who wishes to learn more about expanding the horizons of traditional gardening.

Easy and beautiful!.......2003-10-11

I'm not one of those gardeners who can spout off the botanical names of the plants. I just like things to look good. But I also like to do it myself, so when I found Contain Yourself, I thought "Maybe I can find some ideas for the planters and window boxes around my house." Because admit it, it you're like me, you depend too much on geraniums for the sunny spots and impatients for the shady ones. Kerstin's book shows me what to do with all those cool new plants I've been seeing in the garden shops. My new favorites? Wave petunia, verbena, bidens, helichrysum and chalibrachoa (I'llhave to check my spelling on this one). It looks like a miniature petunia. The authors designs look great all summer long and even now - my neighbors are coming to ME for advice! I tell them to buy the book - I gave one to my sister!

This book has a catchy title. The subtitle "101 fresh ideas for container gardens" is more specific, if rather unrealistic. I'll take the writer's word for it that there are 101 container gardens described in this book, but "fresh ideas" they are not. They feature fairly basic containers filled with the likes of petunias, verbena,and osteospermums, with a grass or phormium to give height and ivy, lotus vine or ajuga as a trailer. The result is the kind of thing you see on sale at Home Depot or one of the other big box retailers.

Each "recipe" for a container design has a colour photo of the mature planting, a planting diagram and notes on the plants, containers and care. These notes are repetitive because of the limited range of containers and plants.

The writer is described as president of a marketing communications firm for the horticulture field. The marketing is more in evidence here than the horticulture.

I recently became a volunteer editor for two publications and it was suggested to me to learn the program Pagemaker 7, since that was used on prior publications. Though I did get the program, it was very hard to learn from the self help section. I came across Kevin Siegel's book while searching on Amazon, bought the book and I am amazed in such short time with what I have been able to understand, learn and remember and more importantly, put to use. I just wish there was a similar book by Mr. Siegel on Photoshop. This is the book you should get if you want to learn Pagemaker 7 the "right" way.

Kevin Seigel has put together the simplest, handiest, user- friendliest book I can imagine on Pagemaker and I recommend it to everybody who has the software as a basic reference. I have always considered myself to be too impatient to learn Pagemaker. I've taken Pagemaker classes and felt like I failed & they failed because they're so boring and it all seems so easy, but when I leave class I forget it all and none of the manuals or handouts are very good and when I try to put a page together I just get upset. But this book is so step by step and basic, if you just do it, take it lesson by lesson, you'll find yourself understanding how the program works and what it can do, at least enough to accomplish whatever project you're working on. I'm happy to say that the knowledge builds on itself and I actually feel that I'm gaining some proficiency in Pagemaker!
Do yourself a big favor and buy this book.

This is quite possibly the best approach to a training guide I've seen for a software program. Very concise and clear with hands-on exercises. The graphics could be crisper, but after a few pages, the black-and-white illustrations were not a distraction at all. I also applaud the fact that the book is spiral bound, which allows you to lay the book down next to the keyboard and follow along. Using this book in conjunction with the Visual Quickstart Guide has made me a competent, skilled PageMaker user in just a few weeks. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn PageMaker from scratch.

A good way to begin learning........2004-05-12

I had never worked with PageMaker before and wanted to get up-and-running fairly quickly. This book helped a lot.

The lessons are clear and organized well. After each major section there is a "lab" where you apply what you've learned. My only complaint with the labs is that there are not always pictures to compare your work with. Other than that I found the book/instructions quite easy to follow and now feel that I could begin working with PageMaker to create documents for our office.
