Making practice fun.......2000-10-26

FUNdamental Soccer Practice is chock-o-block filled with fun drills to make practice more like a party than a chore. There are many activities which keep young players giggling while working hard to improve their skills. I used suggestions from this book for three years to plan practices and took a travelling team of girls from the cellar of division four up to a contender in division two; laughing all the way. This is a creative and fun book!

The FUNdamental SOCCER Method worked for me!!!.......1998-07-11

...Written by Karl Dewazien, California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) director of coaching since 1978, this book showed me 'how to' develop, organize and run a successful youth practice. The book has apparently been translated into 'Spanish and Chinese' and is currently used by coaches in the People's Republic of China. It is also being used by CYSA as a coaching school manual -I know this for a fact since that is where I received my first copy. The pages are delightfully illustrated with games and activities that can be easily implemented by anyone. After I started to apply the FUNdamental Soccer method my players didn't want to leave our practices. I have learned to disguise the hard work that it takes to become a good soccer player and youth soccer team. This book gets my 'two thumbs' up!!!

Essential to the beginning coach.......1998-07-11

Recently I received a telephone call from a friend in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was looking for a soccer book suitable for beginning coaches and beginning players.

I thought that such a request was easy to fill. I have several shelves of books from various parts of the United States and Europe. But as I examined the books, I realized that I was wrong.

Most authors assume that the reader is an experienced coach. Thus, terms are used without definition. The mechanics of technique were alluded to but never illstrated.

I was becoming frustrated.

Then I came upon Karl Dewazien's book FUNdamental SOCCER -Practice. It was perfect for my friend in Tulsa. The book is clearly written and the illustrations by Joseph G.Garcia appear on almost every page. There are no assumptions; it is all there!

What makes this book so useful?

If a coach wants to teach soccer he must start with some concepts of pedagogy, which is the title of Section 1. From there Dewazien outlines the organization and necessities of a practice session.

Following this, Dewazien develops themes that should be introduced into the practice. The themes are developmental and sequential, beginning with dribbling, and ending with 'controlling flighted ball' and the throw-in.

The book ends with a section on small sided games followed by modified laws of the game for players under six, eight,ten or twelve.

Dewazien approaches soccer training as an educator. As a result, he is well organized, clear, and most concerned with participant having FUN.

The core of the book is the section on small sided games. He is an expert, and if children are to have fun, they must have FUN GAMES.

I highly recommend this book for all coaches. For the inexperienced coach of young players, it will become a must book. For experienced coaches, it offers hints of organization that may have been forgotten. One example is the "Six step approach for Improving the Player." Any coach can benifit from reviewing the six steps.

An experience! d soccer friend borrowed my copy of the book to review the small-sided games. Something for everyone.

Dewazien and Garcia have achieved a good blend creating a book well written and clearly illustrated. A rare accomplishment. "FUNdamental SOCCER Pratice" is the best buy on the soccer book market and essential to the begining coach.

An excellent book for beginners........1997-05-04

This is a great book if you are a novice soccer coach, working with very young children (ages 4- 8). Any older than that and you'll need something more sophisticated (see the books by Wiel Coerver and Alan Hargreaves)

This is from 2004, and it seems to have the feel of a book that's so much older. Still, I liked what I read when I got it from the library, so I think I'll go ahead and buy it. It'll help me decide if I need to go ahead and find a library science program and change careers midlife! And by the way, I make it a point to NEVER trust five-star reviews, especially if they are the only one given so far.

I'm a new MLIS student, and I must say that I was really impressed with this book as it addresses so many questions that I had regarding all phases of a librarian's career, including choosing classes and work place dynamics. I still refer to it often as I plan both my class schedule and my career.

I purchased this book after adopting a one year old Cairn Terrier. I feel the book has been very helpful in giving me insight into the breed in terms of training, grooming and socialization. A bonus is the beautiful photos found throughout the book. I would recommend this to all new Cairn owners or those contemplating a Cairn puppy.

A Little Disappointing.......2005-01-13

Considering the status of the author's kennel, I found the book to be a let-down. It honestly seemed like a generic book on dogs used as a template with only an added Cairn-specific paragraph or two at most per chapter. In the majority of the text it looks like the words "the dog" were just replaced with "the Cairn Terrier".

I was looking for much more from this author. For example in the chapter covering health issues, the advice on routine care for a Cairn's ears is "ask your veterinarian". Gee thanks! Isn't there any advice you could print to educate me as well? My vet isn't a Cairn breeder or owner, he really doesn't know a lot of breed-specific issues and that's what I'd hoped this book could provide. The same with grooming. The book just says that the Cairn is the "lazy man's terrier" as far as coat. Very little is given about the unique care and maintenance a Cairn's coat requires except a discussion of a name brand of stripping knife.

The photographs are lovely and abundant. The text is well written, and good basic information, it's just not deep with Cairn detail. There are a few spots where the author's love and knowledge of the breed shines out, for example in the discussion of obedience that says a Cairn's response to obedience commands ranges from "no" to "make me" to "make it worth my while".

All in all, a book worth having on my shelf but if I was using it to evaluate whether a Cairn was the dog for me or as my only reference for behavior and care issues, I'd feel I didn't have enough material.

great book!.......2004-08-18

this book is really good. i loved the variety in pictures (and so did my friends). it has the right amount of information and is organized well. i got this book one day before i bought my cairn terrier which i'd been considering getting and the information here really confirmed that this was the right dog for me. i am also going to get a training book but for those wanting to know about this breed this is a complete book. i highly recommend this !!

not a complete reference on cairn terriers.......1999-01-15

At first I was quite disappointed with this book because I wanted a more complete overview of the cairn terrier. If you are looking at the history and bloodlines of the cairn, this book is for you. However, if you are looking for a general overview look for a different book. I did in the end find this book useful when I began looking at pedigrees of prospective cairns, and due to reading, the names were familiar.

Great Book for Pedigree research.......1998-06-28

This book is great for anyone who has a Cairn terrier with good blood lines. You can look up the kennels and breeders that produced the champions in the lines of your dog. Good reference for anyone wishing to find a top notch breeder.

A good guide book, and not just for wine.......2002-01-15

Another reviewer accurately described this book as an excellent guide for wine enthusiasts. It's certainly that, but I'd be tempted to recommend this book even if you're so-so about wine.

That's because this travel book is straightforward and honest in its opinions; it says that the view from a restaurant is excellent but the food is only so-so, or just stick to their fish entrees. As a result, when the book does gush you know that it's sincerely meant, not an unrelenting PR spin about the expected tourist stops.

The book isn't perfect, however. One thing it lacks (as do most other Germany guide books) is any sense of distance between places; an occasional "only a 20-minute drive away" would have helped immeasurably.

We all have a limited amount of time available on our vacations; this book helped us use that time wisely.

German Wine and Travel.......2001-09-16

I was first introduced to German wine as a soldier in Germany some years ago. I have enjoyed it ever since. There are two things in this book about German wine that make it extraordinary, the maps and the photographs.

Detailed maps show the location of the vineyards in relationship to the wine-producing towns. So when one buys a bottle of German wine in the United States, he or she can read the label, for example, on a bottle of Muellheimer Sonnenlay and locate the Sonnenlay vineyard near the town of Muellheim on the appropriate map.

The photographs in this book are beautiful. One example would be the picture of the market place in Trier, the so-called oldest town in Germany. There are also photos of the rivers, the towns, and the vineyards.

I have visited some of the wine-producing towns on the Mosel and some on the Mittelrhein and sampled wines. For me, these are some of the best wines in Germany. On the Mosel, from personal experience, the towns of Zell, Bernkastel-Kues, and Piesport offer outstanding wines, and they are worth a visit. On the Rhine, my favorite wine town is Bacharach, which produces some equally good wine. The coverage of these towns in the book is, in my opinion, very good.

In his book, Stuart Pigott also clarifies the "Praedikat" system, used for classifying wine types, such as "Spaetlese" und "Auslese", according to the level of grape sugar in them. He also lists the names of some of the wine estates for each area with a comment on them, as well as the phone number, for those who wish to visit. Pigott also reluctantly points out a few German wines that are not what they are supposed to be. An example is Piesporter Michelsberg, most of which is not even from a Piesport vineyard. I have seen this in good wine sections in stores in the United States next to the authentic and fine Piesporter Goldtroepchen.

Even if the reader is not particularly interested in wine, the book provides a good deal of information about the towns along the Mosel and Rhine rivers, and it can be used to help plan trips. As mentioned, there are photos of many of the towns with a description of the high points, along with some recommended hotels and restaurants.

On the whole, from my own experience traveling in Germany and tasting numerous wines, I think this is an excellent book for understanding German wines and equally good for planning trips to some of the most interesting towns in some of the most beautiful river valleys in Germany.

Encyclopedic reference book.......2002-03-21

This book is an exhaustive encyclopedia of perennial plants grouped into three sections by their blooming time - spring, summer and autumn. It has beautiful pictures of each plant, with a number of varieties of each type included and pictured. I do not think, however, that it is a book for those who are new to gardening or who want to learn more about gardening with perennials. The plants are listed by their Latin names only, with no reference whatsoever to their common names. It therefore makes the book quite useless for someone who wants to look up or identify a plant and is not familiar with the Latin name. Basically, this lovely book is more of a dictionary or encyclopedia of plants, rather than a gardening guide or how-to. And although beautiful to look through, and a good and thorough reference for those well versed in perennials, it is not helpful as a gardening book for someone who is looking for more gardening and plant guidance.

This critical edition presents the only complete, later medieval Latin commentary on the first two books of Martianus Capella's influential handbook of the Seven Liberal Arts. Using his allegorical interpretation of the programmatic marriage of Mercury (eloquence) and Philology (learning) as a speculative, proto-scientific method of inquiry, the commentator provides encyclopedic coverage of medieval philosophy, theology, science, myth, language, literature and education. Intellectually the author is still connected with early scholasticism and the "School of Chartres," being more sympathetic to Neoplatonism than to the newly arrived Aristotelianism. He is particularly interested in the role of good works which he sees revealed sub integumento in the function of Iuno in the Capitoline trinity. The commentary seems to have been designed with a reading audience and a reference in mind. The present edition has been keyed to Dick's as well as Willis' editions of Martianus Capella.

A portable art gallery for the digital age.......2001-09-16

As the price of digital technology has plummeted, its availability has become more democratized. The result has been an explosion of creativity, as more and more people find the powerful new tools of self-expression available to them. No medium has been as completely revolutionized by computer typography, in particular, than that of the small press. This book takes us through some examples of the most innovative work coming from periodicals in the past few years. Sometimes odd, but frequently brilliant, it is always exemplary of the tremendous freedom digital composition has given to the page designer. If you're in the business, chances you'll find stuff here to inspire you. If you just like art, you won't be disappointed, either.

[One side note: don't expect any step-by-step instructions on how to reproduce this art. Don't even expect much explanatory text with each plate. It's just a gallery. Even so, you can learn a lot just by looking at the approximately 220 full-color plates on offer here.]

Inspiration!.......2000-04-21

This book is great inspiration for any graphic designer. If I'm struggling for an idea, this is my muse. The art found in this book is primarily from page design (magazines, books) with very little web design. This is not a negative comment, just don't expect to see much web design. The medium is irrelevant; it's just great design.

When I need great ideas and inspiration, I pick up this book! What a wonderful collection of thought provoking artwork. If you are an artist, this book is a must have...it is well worth the price and you'll find yourself pcking it up all the time. I see something new in it I didn't see before every time I open it.

For over two centuries, in the North as well as the South, both within their own community and in the public arena, African Americans have presented their bodies in culturally distinctive ways. Shane White and Graham White consider the deeper significance of the ways in which African Americans have dressed, walked, danced, arranged their hair, and communicated in silent gestures. They ask what elaborate hair styles, bright colors, bandanas, long watch chains, and zoot suits, for example, have really meant, and discuss style itself as an expression of deep-seated cultural imperatives. Their wide-ranging exploration of black style from its African origins to the 1940s reveals a culture that differed from that of the dominant racial group in ways that were often subtle and elusive.

A wealth of black-and-white illustrations show the range of African American experience in America, emanating from all parts of the country, from cities and farms, from slave plantations, and Chicago beauty contests. White and White argue that the politics of black style is, in fact, the politics of metaphor, always ambiguous because it is always indirect. To tease out these ambiguities, they examine extensive sources, including advertisements for runaway slaves, interviews recorded with surviving ex-slaves in the 1930s, autobiographies, travelers' accounts, photographs, paintings, prints, newspapers, and images drawn from popular culture, such as the stereotypes of Jim Crow and Zip Coon.
