I did not realize from the description that the book was aimed at summer teams and people who know very little about swimming. It is a good beginning book but was not particularly helpful to me as I wanted information for a high school team.

I've just started co-coaching a small club in Kinsale, Co. Cork. I'm a competitive swimmer and knew what I wanted to get across, but not how. John Leonard's book has really made a difference. I'm now structuring sessions in a useful way and I know I'm communicating better with the swimmers. I shall be introducing his suggestions about setting objectives and using a bulletin board when we start training again after Easter. I'm confident that my swimmers will benefit.Thanks John.

If you want to improve your technical writing skill, from manual writing, or technial report composition, this book is for you.
This is an excellent book........2001-01-30
I was required to take a technical writing course for my degree and this is the book we used. It did an excellent job of explaining how things should be professionally written. It covers everything from asking for a recommendation to typing a resume to typing a proper e-mail. The layout of the book makes everything very easy to learn. After every concept there are examples of what a proper document should look like and sometimes even an example of what it should not look like. At the time, I thought I would never use anything I was learning, but after only two months out of the class I find myself using it to type up my resume. If you are in a job that requires professionalism in language and writing skills then this book is a must have. You will be surprised at what you can learn.

I read the whole book Sunday and can't say enough about how wonderful it is. To be able to write like that and to give so much useful information, even references to things that are not fun for dogs to have happen to them, is a gift to all companion animals and their people. I loved the writing style and learned so much. Our pets are important family members. This book teaches you how to keep them healthier by vaccinating less, feeding them nutritional food that can in the end cost less and save on veterinary bills. The books is a great resource for everything you want to know about your dog's happiness and health.

As both a dog owner and veterinarian by profession, I work in the world of medical science and I live in the world as a devoted dog owner. Therefore, I can truly appreciate the need for Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care. Although the title might suggest the content is someone trivial, this author has poured her heart, detective skills and keen sense of intuition into real fact finding and honest answers. Her concerns should also be your concerns and her cautions, your yellow flag! In these times we are all bombarded with tons of information and often not enough time to make truly informed decisions. Therefore, I encourage you to let Jan Rasmusen be your guide to bridge the dangerous gap between advances in modern medicine and aggressive marketing campaigns fueled by drug companies to help you decide what is best for the dog in your life.
Insightful & Fun To Read.......2007-05-09
Chiclet and her "mom" have done an exemplary job of researching and compiling a much needed resource for pet owners. Scared Poopless provides a humorous, yet insightful look into the trials and tribulations encountered when caring for our beloved four-legged "kids." This book raises many questions that we have as animal guardians and encourages us to explore all available options in seeking answers. I carry it in my practice and sell it to clients at my cost.
Must Have Resource Book for Dog Owners.......2007-05-09
Scared Poopless is an absolute must have resource book for every dog owner. Jan Rasmusen has done the research for us and compiled it into this enormously informative and easy-to-read book. Everything you ever wanted to know about caring for dogs and a good deal you didn't know you needed to know is within the pages of her book. As a concerned, but somewhat uninformed Mom of three Maltese puppies, I have found Scared Poopless to be invaluable in providing me answers to my questions on many standard veterinarian practices. The chapter on nutrition for our best friends is especially relevant today as "pet parents" deal with the very real concern of feeding our dogs healthy, nutritional meals. Jan's book is exactly what I have been searching for. I love it!

This delightful book came to me at exactly the right time. The month
of March in Wisconsin is one of the toughest months for anyone who
loves gardening. Reading a pretty gardening book that focuses on
the gardener was exactly what I needed to make it through until the
first signs of spring began to arrive.
The author has divided this book up into stages of imagining,
envisioning, planning, planting, tending, enjoying, and completing
your garden. Each stage was an affirmation for me of why I connect
with nature and have dirt under my fingernails all summer long.
Step by step, you are shown how to find the creativity within and trust your instincts as you allow yourself to dream your garden into being. While there is plenty of practical how-to information, most of the insights in this book lead you toward building the self-confidence to allow yourself to listen, experiment and bring your vision into full bloom.
This book will remain along side my other favorite gardening books to
be read again and again, whenever I need some gardening inspiration.

A fascinating perspective on garden design.......2004-07-04
This book is not just another step by step garden design book. It is a fascinating look into the mental and psychological processes of garden design. Fran works to awaken and inspire the gardener to design a personal and unique garden that has meaning to its owner. The book is broken up into seven design stages. Fran says that these techniques can be used to unleash creativity and that gardening empowers us to go on to be successful in other parts of our lives. Each section has exercises to help us design our own gardens that are personally fulfilling to us.
If you are looking for a paint by number plan to quickly create a nice looking garden, this book is not for you. If you are looking for a book full of shiny pictures, you will be disappointed. However, if you are interested in jump-starting your creativity to help you plan and make a unique garden that reflects your personal style, you should have a copy of Digging Deep on your bookshelves.
GARDENING AS A METAPHOR FOR SELF-HELP.......2004-06-05
"I believe the ultimate goal is not to be creative, but to learn how to live creatively."
Sorin was successful at her last job, but it wasn't satisfying. When the time came to create a garden at her new home, Sorin went to special lengths for her garden and it eventually lead her to a new career in garden design. The lessons learned during her career change are what _Digging Deep_ is all about.
Sorin's book is set up in six sections.
"Six stages of "creative unfolding within the context of your garden: Imagining, Envisioning, Planning, Planting, Tending, Enjoying, and Completing."
In the stages are mini chapters of creative lessons. Sorin gives examples by way of her experiences with her clients. She tells of her clients' excitement in discovering a creative approach to life, in the hopes that it will inspire the reader. At the end of the chapters, she gives readers things to do. They aren't demanding and some may even become nice habits.
_Digging Deep_ is an inspiring self-help book that uses gardening as a metaphor. The book is well written and Sorin's advice is rational and clear. Highly Recommended.
Really Inspiring.......2004-04-20
Ever since I moved to New York City I felt like I just didn't have any time to do things I used to enjoy so much. And I read about this book in USAWeekend and bought it and got so inspired that I bought two fica plants before I even finished the book. It reminded me of the time I used to spend with my Irish grandma out in the garden where I grew up near Peoria, IL. It filled me with life again, and not to get too honest, since reading Fran Sorin's book I have gotten the courage to break off a relationship I should have ended a while back. And I honestly feel I am ready to start and enjoy making my new life grow!

Zora Neale Hurston is considered one of the most controversial yet prominent figures associated with the Harlem Renaissance. This introductory study examines Hurston's contributions to that literary movement, as well as her role as mediator between the black and white worlds in which she lived. Readers will appeciate the clear presentation of the biographical facts of her life, as well as an overview of the issues and varying perceptions surrounding her literary achievements. A full chapter is devoted to analysing each of Hurston's major works of fiction: Jonah's Gourd Vine (1934), Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), Moses, Man of the Mountain (1939), Seraph on the Suwanee (1948) as well as her short fiction and her fictionalized autobiography Dust Tracks on a Road (1942). For each of the works, plot, character development, themes, setting and symbols are identified and discussed in clear accessible language. An alternate critical perspective enhances the understanding of each of Hurston's full length works. Contemporary reviews are cited in a bibliography which also helps students find further biographical and critical information on Zora Neale Hurston.

Anthropologist and author Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960) is one of the most significant African American writers of the 20th century. Born in Alabama, she grew up in a small town in Florida, where she developed an interest in African American folklore. In 1925 she moved to New York and became part of the Harlem Renaissance, meeting such figures as Langston Hughes and Carl Van Vechten. She continued her anthropological research at Barnard under Franz Boas, and African American folklore became central to her fiction. She is best remembered as the author of Jonah's Gourd Vine, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Mules and Men, her study of African American folklore of the South. This reference is a convenient and thorough guide to her life and writings. A chronology outlines the major events in her life and her most significant accomplishments, while a short biography offers a narrative assessment of her career. The heart of the book is a collection of hundreds of alphabetically arranged entries. These cover her works, characters, themes, motifs, family members, and acquaintances. Entries for the most important topics include suggestions for further reading, and the volume closes with extensive primary and secondary bibliographies.
