Book Description
The Sports Encyclopedia: Baseball 2005 covers the history of every player, every team, and every season from 1902 through 2005, with detailed statistics and text summaries, as well as full coverage of this year's exciting pennant race. -Which team became the first in history to come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series?Who was the only player to pinch-hit a World Series homerun?Who became the first to manage five straight pennant winners, and in what years did he do it? What 1970s team won a pennant with only one player hitting more than twenty homers, no player driving in eighty runs, no player stealing even ten bases, no player hitting .300, and only one pitcher winning more than fifteen games? The answers to these and thousands of other baseball questions can be found in this fully up-to-date, fact-filled reference book.
Customer Reviews:
Unique format concentrates on teams, not individuals.......2005-04-06
This is my favorite Baseball Encyclopedia. While others may have more information, new statistical measures and other technical features that the Neft reference lacks, this is the only encyclopedia that keeps the emphasis on the team-seasons rather than on individual players.
Each "Chapter" in the book is devoted to a single season with about a half page of text describing the season, the pennant races and important individual players. The teams are then presented in finish order in sections for each league and division. Each team entry takes approximately 20-25% of the page, depending on the number of players used.
Every player that appeared in a game for a team is listed in the team's roster and only those stats he acquired with that team are presented in his stat line. Players that appear on multiple teams are presented on each team with a number in indicating the order of progression from team to team. Players that miss time due to injury (or other reasons) are tagged with a code indicating the basic nature of their reason for their loss of playing time, such as "shoulder injury" or "left early to play pro football". In some cases significant players that miss an entire season are listed with their team's roster. Each season is punctuated with line scores for each post- season game and stats totals for each post-season series.
Player career total statistics are listed in several sections dividing the history of the game into "eras" corresponding to major changes in the game's rules and/or structure: 1901-1919, 1920-1945, 1946-1960, 1961-1972 and 1973-present. A "Leaders and Features" section at the end lists all pennant winners, yearly leaders in each statistical category, single season record lists for each stat, a list of all no-hitters, all award winners, hall of fame members, team leaders, non-playing managers and active leaders.
Each team entry contains the following stats: finish place, win-loss record, winning percentage, number of games behind the winner, the manager name(s) and individual manager records if more than one manager is used.
Each position player entry on a team contains the following stats: Player name, number of games at each position, batting hand, age, G, AB, R, H, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, BB, SO, SB, Avg and Slg.
Each pitcher entry on a team contains the following stats: pitcher name, throwing hand, Age, W, L, Win Pct, Saves, Games, Games Started, Complete Games, IP, H, BB, SO, Shutouts and ERA.
League leading totals are indicated within the team rosters by bolding the relevant stat.
One negative note about the 2005 edition is that there are some glaringly obvious errors in the 2004 season essay. Specifically, the Twins were referred to as the "Minneapolis Twins" and Giants Ace Jason Schmidt was referred to as "Jeff". I assume these will be rectified in later editions, but I'd like to see a bit better proofing of the text before initial publication.
If your interest is seeing a list of all the single-season stat lines for an individual player, you want anything but this book. However, if your interest is in a single season or in viewing the course of a player's career IN CONTEXT, then there is nowhere to turn but to this reference.
All There is to Know.......2005-02-15
As the back cover says, this is the All-Time Baseball Argument Settler. The book has a lot of pages (840), the pages are big (about 8 by 10.5 inches) and the type is small so you get a lot of data.
It's basically the history of every player, every team, in every season since play began. It's not filled with chit-chat, it's filled with data, page after page of data. To be sure, each season is described in a half page or so of text to give you the overall story of what happened, but then it goes to the data.
This is the 25th edition of this book. If you've bought earlier editions you know what to expect. If you're new, all I can say is that there are good reasons for a book to go through 25 editions. It is obviously putting the information that people want into their hands.

It represents a great asset for any library.
Simply Excellent !!!
A Poor Substitute For MacMillan.......2005-04-11
Sure! It's loaded with new age stats(AOPS,ABR,AERA,RNG,BFW).But are you looking to see why Reggie Jackson was called Mr.October? Well don't look under his entry in the Batter Register. As a matter of fact don't look anywhere in this book because players AL/NLCS or World Series stats ARE NOT listed! Want to look up some post season facts? Your search begins on page 1631 and ends on page 1634! No line scores for Playoff or World Series games! The post-season section is no more comprehensive than you would find in the World Almanac! Not what I'm looking for in a Baseball encyclopedia. If you've ever spent an hour or two just getting lost in your old MacMillan encyclopedia flipping back from section to section, don't expect this cheap imposter volume to re-create that feeling.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing, fun, down to earth book.......2007-06-17
I got this book from the library along with "Weddings for Grownups" and I must say it was a breath of fresh air of sanity and reminded me to laugh at my crazy wedding plans. My only complaint is that it is slightly outdated--there is no email mentioned...no digital cameras...and I would love it if she wrote a 2nd edition. I would buy a copy for a friend or end up buying a copy for a friend.
Useful, Unique & Well-written.......2007-05-09
Despite the slightly-too-fuzzy-pink cover illustration (as others have noted), this book turned out to be a great buy. It's different from other wedding books out there in that:
1) It approaches the wedding as entirely in your hands - there are no lists of "must dos" or of boring suggestions for how to slightly tweak a traditional wedding. It's not a predictable outline of a predictable wedding. It's empowering. It tends more toward guiding the bride (yes, it's written for you, miss) to come up with her own ideas and solutions. There are plenty of creative real-life wedding stories included for inspiration.
2) It's well-written. Meaning: It feels like it was written by an actual person, for an actual person. It's funny. It's down-to-earth. It's so refreshing in this world of repetitive quantity-over-quality wedding jabber.
3) It's a confidence-booster. The main theme of this book is how to identify your ideal wedding and then how to wade through the throngs of relatives and industry salesladies to actually get it. It's not exclusively about saving money, but it's about knowing how to go about your interpersonal interactions if that's what you want.
I think what endears me to this book most is its staunch position that the purpose of your wedding is to publicly celebrate the love and commitment between you & your spouse. This is a thoughtful book designed to bring you closer to that ideal, and the fact that it's a rare find is depressing.
But don't despair. Just order the book.
Made me feel better about the whole process.......2007-05-04
Every time I started reading one of those wedding-planning books, I would feel my anxiety rising quickly to an intolerable level. "The average wedding costs over $25,000." "It is of absolute importance that you make sure no to offend anyone." etc. There were only two out of the many (15 or so) that I read that gave me a relieved feeling and called me to remember that it was really about the love, and all this other stuff was icing. This was one of those two (the other was about eloping!) Some reviewers have said that it does not contain enough information; I would say that brides generally suffer from an overabundance of "information", and most could really use the gentle call to sanity that this book offers.
A fantastic surprise!.......2005-08-19
A friend of a friend loaned me this book and I thought it would be yet another useless book of lists and non-information. Instead, this is a great book that helps you assert what you want for your wedding without becoming a "but it's my day" monster. this was a huge help in preparing for finding out all of our families opinions and then balancing them out with what we really wanted. i plan to buy this for every friend i know before they get married - that and a check for a few good therapy sessions. in fact, that's what this book is - good therapy.
An entertaining read and generally useful resource........2005-02-13
I love this book. One Amazon review trashed it for focusing on all the negative aspects of getting married but I can't see how the reviewer would have come to that conclusion unless she stopped reading after the first chapter. The book shares stories of other weddings--good, bad, and okay but we would have done something different--that serve as inspirations and cautionary tales. Danielle Claro's writing style is very down-to-earth and readable without being insultingly simplistic.
I honestly don't foresee our respective families having a lot of problems with our wedding. That may be naive of me, but time will tell. Despite not considering myself really the target audience for this book, I still got a lot of ideas from the different stories, which were funny, sweet, and entertaining, as well as validation for some of the ideas I already had. The book offers much advice for ways around the wedding industry machine and supports any wedding participant's decision to do things a little differently.
Don't let the pink cover fool you. This is an entertaining and informative read that's useful even if you think you're family won't care that you want to have wedding pie and get married on a pirate ship by your yoga instructor.

Butterflies at your fingertips!.......2004-12-31
This is the kind of book that you'd like to cut up and decorate every wall of you house with. The images are sharp and clear. The size of the butterflies vary for almost every corner or difficult spot on your projects that you need to fill in. Butterlies are included in almost every conceivable size and color. The quality of the paper is also excellent, making the images easy to cut and glue.
Great source of butterfly pictures.......2003-02-09
There are 388 pictures to draw from. Some are not very clear (a little blurry) but I'd say 80% are really good. Great colors, lots of variety both in terms of types of butterflies and in sizes. Most are stand alone butterflies but some are accompanied by flowers/fruit too.

Book Description
Book Description
Libraries increasingly use blogs and RSS feeds to reach out to users, while librarians blog daily on a range of personal and professional topics. The way has been paved by the tech-savvy and resource-rich, but any library or librarian can successfully create and syndicate a blog today. In this readable book, author, Internet trainer, and blogger Michael P. Sauers, M.L.S., shows how blogging and RSS technology can be easily and effectively used in the context of a library community. Sauers showcases interesting and useful blogs, shares insights from librarian bloggers, and offers step-by-step instructions for creating, publishing, and syndicating a blog using free Web-based services, software, RSS feeds, and aggregators.
Customer Reviews:
Blogging and RSS for Dummies.......2007-05-01
I am not a blogger or a librarian, but by the end of the year I should be both. So this seemed like a good book to check out so I can hit the blogosphere and job market running. Now, before I start kvetching, let me state that this book does a perfectly good job at what it does, and my primary complaint is that I wish it did more, and did it in greater depth.
Basically, this is "Blogging and RSS for Dummies", with a very small dollop of librarian content. Yes, it kicks off with about 70 pages on "The Library Blogosphere," however the bulk of this material is devoted to the ten or so "stars" of library blogging (shiftedlibrarian, librarystuff, librarian.net, etc.). You get small write ups about each of these blogs, excerpts to indicate their tone, screenshots, and then their authors' answers to a brief questionnaire. This may be useful if you've got a lot to say about the profession and aim to crack their ranks, or if you're new to blogs and want to know what the good librarian ones are (although a two minute online search would lead you to the same blogs), but there's very very little information about how libraries use blogs. I guess the book I really want to read would be something like "Blogging and RSS for Libraries" (not "Librarians").
When it comes to actual blog creation, Sauers limits his tutorial (and that's what it is) to the free "Blogger" service (now a Google property), with only a one paragraph mention of server-based packages such as WordPress, MoveableType, and TypePad. Blogger is great at what it does -- you can have a nice-looking, free, basic blog up and running in minutes (well, as long as you have a Gmail account). However, most libraries are likely going to need the flexibility and custom features of the more robust server-based packages noted above. Blogger is so easy and well-documented that most people can probably skip the 40 pages of hand-holding covering blog set-up and preferences. Still, if that's what you need, this book does an outstanding job of walking you through the process, with plenty of screenshots to illustrate the way. However, it would have been far more useful to devote that space to server-based packages, which do require more hand-holding.
RSS is a bit more complicated and thus somewhat more worthy of Sauer's baby-step explanations. Again, the focus is on the simplest method, so while various flavors of aggregators are mentioned (stand-alone client, embedded client, and server-based), Sauers advocates and concentrates on the popular web-based Bloglines service (which now belongs to Ask.com). Again, Bloglines is so well documented, I'm not sure what the point of a lengthy print-based guide to account setup and maintenance is, but if you need it, it's here. And although RSS is of clear benefit to an individual librarian who's trying to keep informed, it's never explained how or why libraries might want to implement it to serve information to their users. RSS has some real practical applications, especially in special libraries, but these are never mentioned. There's a chapter outlining feeds that may be of interest to librarians, but again, these are easily found online, and I'm not sure what the point of putting them in print (where the information will be outdated almost instantly) is, when they could just all be listed on a companion web page. I'm also not sure what the value is of seeing a screenshot for every single blog and feed mentioned (another quibble is that these are often reproduced too lightly for easy legibility).
In the end, this isn't a bad starting point if you know nothing about blogs or RSS, but for anyone with even a minimum exposure to these tools and a specific interest in how their use might improve library service, it's unlikely to be very useful.
Only for the really fainthearted.......2007-02-26
I had this bookmarked in my 'must buy' list months before it came out. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. If you have absolutely no experience in this area then this book is probably for you. If however you have any experience in this field then you may well want to look elsewhere. The overview of longerterm Library bloggers in the field was an interesting insight, but overall the whole package was disappointing.
Invaluable resource .......2007-02-04
Blogging and RSS: A Librarian's Guide is a solid introduction to blogging written especially for librarians, by a librarian. Internet trainer, blogger, and part-time reference librarian Michael P. Sauers recommends the best blogs, gathers and shares blogging advice from fellow librarians, and walks the reader step-by-step through creating, publishing, and syndicating a blog with free Web-based services, software, RSS feeds, and aggregators. Librarians of all skill and experience levels in the rapidly changing culture and technology of blogging are sure to find valuable insights, instructions, and tips in this invaluable resource covering a topic often overlooked by classical library science instruction.

why the Conspiracy against the Man??.......2005-12-11
first of all Michael Jackson is a civil Rights Leader&has meant more to the united States than almost anybody else over the past 50 years. I can't stand to see these Racist Magazines like Rolling stone&others call Him out of His name.it's sicking&very Unprofessional.the Man was Found Not Guilty&why are the Loaded Media rejoicing in Him leaving His Country?I'll never forget or Forgive this.He has Meant so much to People all around the World.there ain't a President or Political Figure that has moved more People than Michael Joe Jackson. all the hate&negativity against the Man is unfair.I'll always support the Brother.a Black Man should not be forced away from his Home.this is a great Book about the King of Pop.
Not a bad MJ book all round.......2000-01-15
