Book Description
Here at last is a totally updated and expanded edition of A Horse Around the House, the classic guide for anyone who owns or rides a horse--or wants to.
Since this classic's original publication in 1972 and its 1978 revision, much has developed in the horse world. Riding helmets and safety vests have been improved, barn design has changed, and monumental advances have been made in the fields of equine nutrition and veterinary care. With 75 percent revised information and 150 pages of completely new material for both English and Western disciplines, this edition is a complete guide to all of the latest advances in horse care, showing, and rider safety. Like its predecessors, this book is down-to-earth, practical, friendly, and filled with humorous anecdotes. It is based on the questions of thousands of riders, students, and horse owners. Here is the simple, basic information you need for making sound decisions about your horse's physical and emotional well-being.
In addition, Ms. Jacobson delves deeply into all aspects of horse care and riding in order to give you the rundown on everything you might need during your horse's lifetime, including:
Finding, feeding, and housing a horse
Choosing a riding instructor
Grooming, bathing, braiding, clipping, picking, and shoeing
Recognizing and treating common ailments and injuries and when to call the vet
Selecting, fitting, and maintaining equipment
Exercising--for you and your horse
Dressing for the trail or the show ring
Traveling with your horse
Training and conditioning your horse
Caring for the older horse
Whether you use this book for information on mucking out stalls or designing a barn; as a reference; or for instructions on how to make your horse or pony a blanket, cooler, or saddle cover, you'll find no better source of information on the day-to-day care of horses, anywhere.
If you're new to the sport or have just begun riding again after a long hiatus, learn what tens of thousands of people already know: A Horse Around the House is essential reading and belongs in every equestrian library. You and your horse cannot afford to be without a copy. Chances are you've been waiting for this new edition to replace the one that's falling apart in your barn right now!

A helpful guide for any horse owner.......1999-07-04
We found "A Horse Around the House" extrememly useful as new horse owners. All the information you'll need to understand not only the makeup and characteristics of equines is here, along with subtle information about the nuances of horse personalities. We highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about horses.
The welcome return of a major equestrian reference book........1999-06-05
It is delightful to see the updated return of this compendious and clearly written one-stop shop for the new or experienced horse owner. The book became an almost instant classic upon its initial publication, and Pat Jacobson,a well respected teacher and trainer in the Hudson Valley region, has worked hard to incorporate the myriad advances in horse "housekeeping" that have taken place in the intervening two decades. While probably most useful to the first-time horse owner, the book is still an invaluable quick reference for anyone who does not wish to wade through piles of horse magazines to be reminded of the right treatment for thrush; what to do in hot weather, or the correct proportions of hay to grain. Elegant and humorous illustrations reinforce the readable text.
A must for new, old and potential horse owners!.......1999-05-27
The 1999 edition of A Horse Around the House addresses every aspect of horse ownership in a clearly written and beautifully illustrated package. The author is technically correct on the details. Any person who has an interest in horses can learn from this book. It is a must for new, old and potential horse owners.
I bought this book a few years ago and found it wonderful!.......1998-07-26
I plan on purchasing this book again! I give riding lessons etc. and find it a great book for young and old to read. My original seems to have disappeared (one of my young students probably coudn't bear parting with it!).I am waiting for the new addition to come out!
If your buying a horse, or thinking about it, buy this book!.......1998-07-21
I have read several books about owning your first horse since my daughter (13) is as crazy about horses now as I was at her age. This is an execellent book and has become my reference guide as we seach for horses and a horse farm. From the basics, to the details, every aspect of horse ownership is touched on. Funny stories (I love the one about how horses get out of stalls) Drive home the point of safety in a huromous way. My 13 year old and her friend are both reading the book and have suprised many farm owners and horse owners with their knowledge in the questions they ask.

Customer Reviews:
Very uneven, but sometimes useful.......2006-01-04
I agree with the other reviewers, who objected to Steves' dismissal of Rudesheim and Heidelberg. It's particularly arrogant of him to include nothing about them in the book. I visited both and enjoyed them, particularly Heidelberg, and I'm not a Disneyland/Hilton kind of traveler. He has some good nuggets of info. For example, we tried to get a room in Dresden on the spur of the moment, and the tourist office had nothing within 10km of town. But an agency listed in his book, renting private apartments a stone's throw from the Frauenkirche, had some very nice, reasonable units. That alone was worth the price of the book, but overall I think Steves is a little too sure that he knows the one and only right way to see Germany. Take another book with you, too.
Reasonably accurate with caveats.......2005-09-23
Ricks book on Germany was, for the most part accurate and useful. I had booked my trip and planned my itinerary before I had purchased the book so I mainly utilized the dining, shopping, and points of interest information. Rick was dead on about skipping Mainz--I should have--but didn't and wasted 2 perfectly good days in Germany. However, I feel Rick was totally wrong about skipping Rudesheim, inasmuch as I had the best time partying with the natives in the beer gardens along the Drosselgasse, and the Asbach cognac factory tour and tasting was neat too. Combo gondola/chairlift/river boat ride package from Rudesheim to the Germania monument then to Assmannshausen to sample spatburgunder and back to Rudesheim for 9 euros was a bargain and great fun too. Rothenberg was more of a tourist trap than I imagined, but Rick's book got me some incredible discounts at the store he recommends. A very useful book to have, but not the only one I would use !
Don't leave home without it.......2005-08-06
Will be bringing this with me in Sept. for a tour of Bavaria and Austria. Rick's books even have up to date hotel information. Can't wait to try his recommendations.
Very specific travel type.......2005-07-26
This book is decent, has some good tips (like which places you can get tickets in advance, like Neuschwanstein). Only bought in because several coworkers recommended it...otherwise would've just bought a different one. It's great if your tastes match Mr Steves', but if not it won't do you too much good.
The first and worst assumption is that if you're going to Germany or Austria, you will of course be visiting the other. Another assumption is that you will not wish to use train very much at all...Europe is famous for having a thorough public transportation system, and not taking advantage of it seems to me like missing out on part of the experience of being in those countries.
The book does have its moments though, and gives very thorough information about each of the areas and activities it mentions. It's definitely worth a peek if you're not sure where you want to visit.
Rick picked Rothenburg over Heidelberg?????.......2005-06-02
You must be joking, Rick! He said that Heidelberg, with its magnificant castle and breathtaking scenery isn't worth a look, yet he blathers on and on about Rothenburg, which is a HUGE tourist trap. I lived in Europe for 15 years, traveled extensively, and Rothenburg was absolutely the most crowded, tourist-ridden site I visited!!
Rick must be getting old. Time to retire, dude.
Book Description
IN MIXED COMPANY has shown a substantial increase in popularity and acclaim with each successive edition. Consequently, in the Fifth Edition, the author preserved the essence of previous versions, and expanded somewhat the central unifying theme that cooperation in small groups is usually superior to competition. In Mixed Company thoroughly addresses the theme of cooperation in small groups. The communication competence model continues to guide discussions of key small group concepts and processes. Systems theory also remains as a key theoretical component of the text and finally, an extensive discussion and analysis of power in small groups continues to separate IN MIXED COMPANY from other textbooks.

The book was in slightly worse condition than stated, pages and cover were very bent, but the shipping was very speedy.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but lacking in grooming and body language.......2005-12-15
Based on other's recommendation prior to mine, I was looking forward to this as a definitive Miniature Schnauzer guide, but was somewhat disappointed in its lack of depth on certain subjects.
Not to say this is a bad book or has irrelevant information, but for new dog owners it has both its pros and cons.
As a plus, the explanation of the breed and characteristics is thorough, as well as picking a puppy and what to expect. This takes up the first 1/3rd of the book.
I found the grooming section to be great in some areas, but not so informative in others. There is very little information about cleaning ears (the proper and safe way) and why it's important (ear mites, bacterial odor, discharge, infection)....the best it says is pluck hairs and clean with rubbing alcohol in only two sentences. There should be much more on ear treatment. There is a section devoted to oral care which is good. This book more so concentrates on brushing the coat, baths, and clippering.
I would have also like to have seen more on body language as new owners may not always know what their dog is trying to communicate to them. This includes if the puppy or mature dog is not feeling well and what 'subtle' signs to look for.
There is a section describing ailments, parasites, and diseases...but not so much information on how to treat, other than: "See your vet." Duh!!
The only training really covered in this book is "house-breaking, which while important is one facet of a puppy/human relationship. I would have liked to see expanded discussion on other basics such as: Sit, Stay, barking, etc...
While I do recommend this book, it is a very high level look at the breed, but lacking in some detailed information on important day to day concerns of new dog owners.
Good Book, Could Have More Basic Info........2005-07-29
This book is pretty well done as pet books go. The photos and the quality of the paper are excellent. I was a little disappointed not to have an anticipated weight as a function of age or the weight range of the mature dog. I would like to have known how much and when (what hours of the day and how many times a day is best)to feed the puppy as he matures. I got all this info and more from the vet, but more detail in the book, of what to do and what to expect from the typical schnauzer from puppy to dog would have been helpful.
There is a lot of information about showing and breeding, but these are not my areas of interest. The section on Housebreaking and Training beginning on page 80, is well done and quite helpful.
Very helpful for a beginner.......2000-12-21
I bought this book because we were considering getting a new puppy and were interested in Miniature Schnauzers. I liked this book because it gave a brief history and evolution of today's dog which helped me understand more fully the personality of the Miniature Schnauzer. It also answered my key questions about selecting a puppy, as well as, crate training and housebreaking. The book will give you a general feel for what will be needed to appropriately care for this breed. I feel that after reading this book, I can better converse with breeders and am more informed. Since I haven't read any other books specific to the Miniature Schnauzer, I cannot compare to other sources. But I have found it more than adequate for my current need - preparation for purchasing a puppy. One final comment, the book has glossy pages and has plenty of supplemental color photographs. I particulary enjoyed the photographs of a variety of dogs of this breed - it helps me tremendously in the selection process.

Dan's books.......2004-10-23
To answer the question of the other poster, this edition has gone out of print as he is working on another one. That should hopefully be coming out soon.
His books are a fabulous history of the breed in the US and around the world.
What a great book about a great breed.......2004-08-13
This is the kind of information that people really need to know about a breed. This is the kind of book that is all too hard to find, written by an expert. This is not a book with 10 pages in the front about schnauzers and 200 pages about any kind of dog. This is a real, schnauzer book, completely for the min. Schnauzer lover. Why would anyone put such a good book out of print? What is the matter with these publishers? A book like this is good forever. These basic things never change. Howell book HOuse should be ashamed.
Accurate Information - Easy to read format.......2000-09-09
I have both of Dan Kiedrowski's books, the original and this latest edition. He takes the breed from its origins in Germany to the present day. If you are a breeder, exhibitor or just a schnauzer lover you will be in for a treat. There are photos from the past and the present, so that you can clearly see the changes in the breed. The Miniature Schnauzer is a wonderful breed and this book shows the breed beautifully. If you are interested in a specific breed, schnauzer or other it would be wise to read all you can, and learn all you can so that you will be able to make an informed choice. Dan's book will give you accurate unbiased information regarding schnauzers.
new shnauzer owner.......1999-12-15
THIS BOOK WOULD BE AN OUTSTANDING REFERENCE GUIDE FOR THE BREADER OR OTHER INDIVIDUAL INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF THE BREED. I JUST PUT A DEPOSIT ON A SCHNAUSER AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR MY DAUGHTERS AND WAS MORE INTERESTED IN AN ENTRY LEVEL GUIDE BOOK TO CARE AND TRAINING, I WOULD NOT RECOMEND IT FOR THE NOVICE.
If you love miniature schnauzers,, you'll love this book........1999-02-12
This is the best new book on miniature schnauzers that I've seen. It covers history of the breed and desirable vs not-so desirable physical characteristics, and other interesting information, plus, oodles of pictures of modern champions and their lines. I found almost all of the champions in our schnauzers' pedigrees. The book did contain a clinical report on eye ailments, which was oddly out of sync with the rest of the text (it looked like someone was just trying to get their article published). This chapter should have been completely omitted or else presented as a general discussion of the ailments typical of the breed. Aside from this problem, the book should be a visual delight for any schnauzer lover.

The Basketball Price Guide for those of us after older cards.......2004-03-19
Clearly the monthly price guides put out by Beckett are the way to go if you are trying to keep up with the explosion of basketball cards that are being put out each year. But all they can really do is focus on the cards of the stars, which is true not only for LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony today but Wilt Chamberlain and Pete Maravich from the olden days. But if you are really trying to But if you are trying to put together a set of 1971-72 Topps, 1986-87 Fleer or 1992-93 Hoops, then you really need to have a list of all the cards so that you are ready when you head off to a card show or shop and have to deal with dealers who organize their cards by number or team or name of the players. "The Official Beckett Price Guide to Basketball Cards 2004, 13th edition" serves your organizational purposes perfectly. The prices in this guide may well be obsolete, although the farther you go back the more accurate they tend to be. But you really want this book for all the lists of all of the cards compiled by the good doctor and his associates.
You will find that at 6.92 x 4.18 the size of this volume is below what we would have called standard size for collectible card price guides. This is of prime importance for collectors who want a book that we can take to us with card shows. If not, then you can still use this guide to put together your want lists. I am in the process of finishing off a 1971-72 Topps set of basketball cards (about two dozen to go), so I do not need to know how many types of LeBron James cards came out this year. I need to know what cards I am missing without having to pick up the NBA and ABA Checklists for that year and then copying my own list. A book is a lot harder to lose that a list anyway and dealing with the triplet cards Topps put out in 1980-81 is too much of a pain any other way.
That is why the boxes to check off for each card are exactly what I need, whether it is the exalted card from that 1980-81 set where the three players were the rookie "cards" for Magic Johnson and Larry Bird but also Dr. J. This is the book that will tell you that if you are looking for the first basketball card ever produced then you need to track down the 1948 Bowman card of Ernie Calverley. There are about two dozen card companies covered in the 50,000 cards for which prices are provided, which means Topps, Fleer, Hopps, Bowman, Sky Box, Ultra, Upper Deck and all the wannabee companies.
As is always the case with the Beckett volumes, there are tips on how to buy, sell, and care for your cards. These are valuable whether you are in it for the fun or the economics. The prices are always the least important aspect of these books for the simple reasons that the prices are out of date by the time the book hits the stands, which is why Beckett publishes a magazine on basketball cards. However, while that will give you current prices it will not tell you who was card #40 in that 1972-73 Topps set (Bob Rule of the Philadelphia 76ers). For the younger fans the magazine will undoubtedly suffice, but for those of us who remember the red, white & blue ball of the A.B.A. and when players in the N.B.A. knew how to shoot the orange ball instead of just dunking it, this Beckett book will fulfill all of our needs.
