For authentic background on design ideas..........2005-08-15

I got this book because i'm an architectural designer and a client wanted a "Tuscany" look. I like to review the authentic background of design concepts as opposed to taking the marketplace for its word, I guess. So I got this book for reference. The book didn't actually arrive till after the initial design, but it was great confirmation that we went in the right direction. I get the feeling it is relatively complete and makes a great reference or coffee table book depending on your needs. I look forward to getting the rest of the collection for my library.

Traveling from north to south, as in the Villages volume, we encounter first the towns with substantial Etruscan and Romanesque features, then the walled towns of central Tuscany, followed by the coastal and thermal communities of the south. There are works by Luca della Robbia and Donatello in Impruneta; Piero della Francesca was born in Sansepolcro. The architects of the Renaissance have left many masterpieces as well, often under the patronage of powerful local families: Michelozzo built the Villa Medici near Fiesole, while Giuliano da Sangallo designed the Medici fortress at Sansepolcro. Other aspects of the cultural heritage of these towns are more ancient: Volterra has the remains of Etruscan walls, and the Romans used the thermal springs at Chianciano Terme. A noted characteristic of Tuscan towns is their gastronomy. The wines of Chianti are well-paired with the beef of the Chiana Valley, while bread is justly celebrated in the area around Montecatini. Other markets feature nongastronomic delights: alabaster in Volterra, flowers in Pescia, books in Pontremoli. What a wonderful compilation of educational and heartwarming stories! I have four domestic housecats myself and have oftentimes wondered what similarities or differences they might share with their close cousins. NOW I KNOW! What strikes me the most throughout the material is the responsibilty displayed by the lucky folks who own or shall I say are owned by these wonderful cats. I find it compelling that such a special relationship can evolve from these wild cats. My domestics are only a cathair away from them evolutionary wise and it was refreshing to see the same feelings that I have for mine expressed through these admirable small exotic feline owners. Kudos and I truly hope to see more future material of this nature. Thanks for the valuable product!

Depends on what you need..........2003-02-26

If you have a large (at least a half acre; preferably more) garden, the scale of many of the projects in this book will make sense to you and you would probably find rating this book any less than five stars to be a kind of joke. After all, the photographs (as expected from anything associated with Taunton) are superb and there are drawings clear enough to help you develop your own plans for arbors, paths, and other structures. If, like me, you have a very small garden (5-6000 square feet) onto which you struggle to impose some kind of order so that the whole thing does not devolve into a nursery-like display of perennials or a hardware store-like show of a picnic table and benches, you will probably not find much of use here -- one star, at best.

Managing scale so that things look neither too ditzy nor over-stuffed in our little space is what I have most trouble piecing together. In this book I really was not able to find any help. From the rolling lawns which provided setting for many of the photos, I inferred that the scale probably is not right for my back 4.5; these are projects for a back 40 or more. What I wanted was a book to help me develop a way of thinking about accents in my very small garden, a way of working creatively within limits.

What the book provides is a series of projects for gardeners who are working on a large scale -- although they, too, might wish for something in addition to the discrete articles to help them develop an overall vision, a way of assuring that these structural additions accent and not overwhelm.

I just finished reading the book "Miss America,1945:Bess Myerson and the year that changed our lives" and i tell you it's very thought provoking book about what Bess Myerson went through during her reign as Miss America with all the prejudices that she went through.Although it's set in 1945,It's still holds true today.You can honestly say that from the end of World War 2 up to the late 1940's was an important period of change in America where a Jewish girl from the Bronx achieved the dream of every girl who wanted to win the crown of Miss America and two years later Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball.Over all it's a great book and it's something that everyone must have for their book collection.

There she goes, Miss America. And Bess Myerson was America's first (and still only) Jewish Miss America, an groundbreaking achievement that makes for riveting cultural and social history. This is not a new book --- it is the first paperback edition of Susan Dworkin's landmark collaborative biography that was first published in 1987, and it is still an important one. Dworkin weaves together oral histories, research and commentary to present not only a vivid portrait of pre-feminist America in the '30s and '40s, but one of Jews, of women, of the anti-Semitic riddled Miss America pageant and of Myerson's own life. A crowning success. Still.

A superbly produced, highly recommended audiobook........2001-04-05

Ably narrated by Bess Myerson and Adam Grupper, Miss America 1945 is Susan Dworkin's engaging rendition of Bess Myerson's memoirs of her self as a naive Jewish girl from the Bronx, a scheming beauty pageant promoter, and rampant anti-Semitism within the context of a national post-war euphoria. What is particularly fascinating is Myerson's candid revelations of what it was like to be the first (and only) Jewish Miss America and her emergent political activism that resulted from her experiences with the beauty pageant. This abridged-by-the-author audiobook edition features flawless production values and has a running time of 5 hours, 10 minutes. Miss America 1945 is an ardently recommended addition to personal and library audiobook collections.

Absolutely intriguing portrait of a truly fascinating and remarkable woman, not to mention a unique era in history. Bess Myerson symbolized so much, at a very important time in American history. Well worth reading/listening to!
