Book Description
The Basics series provide the ideal introduction to new techniques in the laboratory. This series of books will allow you to use the techniques described, and to manipulate them to suit your own basic requirements.
This book describes the basic requirements for establishing and maintaining cell cultures both in the laboratory and in large-scale operations. Minimal background knowledge of the subject is assumed and therefore it will be a readable introduction to animal cell culture for scientists intending to initiate some work in this field.
New topics are included to reflect the latest developments and trends in the field. They cover the latest theory of the biological clock (teleomeres) of cell lines, the development of improved serum-free media formulations, the increased understanding of the importance and control of protein glycosylation and the humanization of antibodies for therapeutic use.

Book Description
Animal Cell Technology is a growing discipline of cell biology which aims not only to understand the structure, function and behavior of differentiated animal cells but also to ascertain their usefulness for industrial and medical purposes. The goal of animal cell technology includes clonal expansion of differentiated cells for practical applications, optimization of their culturing on an industrial scale, modulation of their ability for production of pharmaceutical proteins and monoclonal antibodies, and application to gene therapy and organ culture.
This volume gives a complete review of the state-of-the-art in Japan, a country where this field is particularly well advanced.
This book should be of interest to cell biologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, biochemical engineers and other disciplines related to animal cell culture, working in the academic environment, as well as in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry.

Great book if you're going to be visiting Naples... Fodor's always has lots of great travel info. But it's not so good for Amalfi Coast (which is where we're planning to go).

A pretty good book...update from and older version!.......2006-11-10
This series has been around for a long time and they finally got around to an update. It is a good companion the other study methods such as cassettes, CD's or DVD's. No Bad in my opinion!
Excellent resource, accomplishes a lot in a short space.......2006-10-21
When I was in graduate school I had to pass a reading competence test in German. Since then, I have not done much studying in this area. However, recently I decided I wanted to review and practice what I learned and I have been searching for good resources.
After looking at many books and bringing along someone who is fluent in German, I settled on this as one of my primary resources. This book is well-organized, comprehensive and to the point. It also has very good exercises, stories and tips for learning the language. You can buy this book with confidence.
The pace of this book is quick and if you haven't studied German before, you may want to get supplementary resources. However, this text provides an excellent roadmap and you can use other books, tapes and software to support its basic approach.

I sat down in the store with all the major self-help guides........2005-04-10
I grabbed a bunch of the self-help guides to german (the ones devoting significant time to grammar) and looked through all of them. Though I think any one of them will work ok (if you actually and use it) I think its best to find one that fits your personal preferences as far as what keeps you interested and continuing to study.
This book is somewhat dated (1965, rev 1985) which is probably what gets its detractors riled up. The phrases and words are probably dated but I think its the grammar excercises and the basic vocabulary words that are most important. This book has many, many exercises, which is why I like it; I prefer alot of instantaneous feedback. The format really could use some updating though. There really is alot of info packed onto every page. It could use some more open space on the pages.
Update: I have found that 'German How to Speak and Write It' by Rosenberg is also an excellent book. Very old but it has great exercises and takes up speaking/thinking in German right away. It would be a great addition to the 'German Made Simple'.
Read with care..........2004-08-20
This is not the best German text available, but it is one of the most affordable. It is not a book for current colloquial German -- as any book teaching contemporary English written in the 1960s would contain phrases that would sound like a bad television show on a low-quality network, so too does this book contain some turns of phrase and expressions that are out-dated and no longer used.
However, as a book to learn a very basic vocabulary, basic verb and sentence structures, and a gradual introduction to German, it isn't that bad. Hopefully the reader will be inspired from here to go on to other texts that will enhance and refine their language skills; however, this provides a non-threatening and gentle entrance to the German language, and for that, it gets some stars in the rating.
It also includes through the course of the piece reading lessons that include conversations and paragraphs, rather than relying solely on disconnected sentences (as some language texts will do on occasion). Another great advantage this book has is that it is intended for self-study -- all the answers are contained in the appendix in the back of the book (so many grammars are great when it comes to providing exercises and drills, but unless you are enrolled in the class you won't necessarily know if you've done them correctly).
As a stand-alone, only-resource book, this text has serious limitations. Taken as part of a beginning to the language, it has some uses.
outdated and appalling grammar mistakes.......2003-04-15
My British girl-friend is presently taking a German course, as I am German. We are currently living in North America, where her German teacher uses the above book.
Being German and a German teacher and linguist for 13 years I was interested in the book my partner is learning the language with. So I went through the book and was appalled at the amount of grammatical mistakes and usage errors used in the book. The book was apparently not written by a German person, based on the type of errors I assume it was written and revised by a native English speaker.
Countless expressions and phrases are completely outdated, many have never been used and/or are simply wrong. Students learning German with this book will be ridiculed when speaking German in any German speaking country. I could not believe that a book like this does even exist for official language courses.
It has even been revised by a Mr. Robert D. Vanderslice and according to its cover "over 1/2 million copies" have been sold or issued.
To be very honest, apart from the wasted money and time people spend on a course and this book (I am sure a lot use it for self-instruction), I think it is even irresponsible to use, publish and sell this book. I will be more than happy to provide you with a list of examples of such linguistic errors and misuses of the German language.
I am presently working as a German language specialist with an international American company, and I am herewith offering you to completely revise this book for you to make it fit for the market. The way it is I can only advise you to please not distribute it any further.
A good and inexpensive introduction to German.......2000-03-24
I have not actually read this edition of the German Made Simplebooks, but I wore out my first book and bought a second one a fewyears later. It was identical. The last time I looked at these books the content hadn't changed noticeably. But I consider this to be a great book for getting started in German and progressing to an intermediate level. As for me, I have been studying German as a hobby for over 20 years and am in the process of working on my undergraduate degree in education for the purpose of teaching German. Considering the low price at which these books sell, most people could easily buy this book, a German-English/English-German dictionary, and a phrase book (if you plan to travel) or two and be well on their way to learning the language. My only complaint about the book I had was that the binding didn't hold up--pages started falling out after a couple of years of use.

Good.......2007-08-14
Everything went great with my order. The book was a great aid in getting to know my new puppy staffordshire bull terrier.
Guide to owning a staffordshire bull terrier.......2002-09-28
a decent book on the breed, but has a reference in it that the pit bull is vicious. to me it seems the author doesnt know to much about the pit bull. statement like that get the bull terrier in more of a bad rap.
Irresponsible.......2002-05-22
I would not recommend this book to most dog owners. I was immediately turned off by it from the first page:
"Most Stafford owners are quick to answer no [to the question 'Is that a Pit Bull?'], and then take the time to say the name of the breed over and over, slowly and carefully, to make sure there is no misunderstanding. They may go on to try to explain what a Pit Bull actually is: 'bigger,' 'longer legs,' 'cropped ears,' 'vicious,' 'trained to fight.'"
In my opinion it's terribly irresponsible that she would defend the Stafford whilst demonizing the Pit Bull.
Also, pictured on the back cover of the book is an American Staffordshire Bull Terrier, not a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
The Guide to Owning a Staffordshire Bull Terrier(Marion Lane.......2001-07-14
Amongst the limited number of books available on this particular breed, most of which I own, this one stands out. Not only is it lavishly illustrated with superior quality photographs of Staffs, supplies, other recommended books and how-to-photos (say, clean the puppy's ears), but the contents is detailed enough, to the point, useful and informative. As I was reading the book what also came through was the Author's affection for this breed. Other books on the subject, either boring or too matter-of-factly, have fallen short of affording me such a bonus.
Book Description
Written for both experienced and novice collectors, 100 Years of the Decorative Arts is a comprehensive illustrated survey of a period once ignored by serious antique dealers but now one of the most popular collecting fields. In this book, Eric Knowles brings together Victoriana, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
Beginning with an introduction to the main events, artistic movements and technological advances of the period, Knowles looks in detail at all of the important craftsmen and women working in the United States, Britain, and continental Europe. The range of media considered is no less diverse and includes furniture, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry and glass. Each section includes information on identification, valuation, dating and fakes. Finally, there is a list of designers, craftsmen and women, manufacturers and their marks, and a glossary of technical terms.
Customer Reviews:
extensive but not enough.......2000-09-04
covers a wide range of different antiques and styles with a focus on the main artists of each style, descriptions, marks, and tips for what to look out for, but does not provide enough examples of the works of each artist or factory featured. good reading, well written, extensive and informative. the book contains a good number of selected designers and manufacturers as well as the different marks of many of them and that is very helpful. the author,Eric Knowles,is one of the leading experts in the field and you notice that as you read. it is a shame he does not put a value estimate by the photos.
Book Description
Julie Moir Messervy has written a classic garden book. Deeply literate and beautifully written, The Inward Garden gives the reader a process for designing one's dream garden. Based on garden archtypes: the sea, the cave, the harbor, the promitory, the island, the mountain, and the sky, this book provides a structure for imagining and designing the garden of one's desires. It is illustrated with outstanding garden photographs by the celebrated national geographic photographer Sam Abell.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-05-07
This is an amazing book with stunning photos. The author shows us the most beautiful gardens around the world and inspires us to recreate those places which has deep meanings to us.
Heartily disappointed........2004-12-20
I have no problems with the premise of the book -- that is why I am read it. I have always believed strongly in an intuitive approach to garden design. The problem that I have with reading this book is the excessive wordiness. Several online reviews of her life's work say more in a paragraph or two than the entire first half of the book -- and say it much better. Messervy is a master at saying the same thing with seventeen varieties of repetition. ENOUGH! -- LET'S MOVE ON, JULIE!
Particularly in the first half of the book, in addition to the relentless repetition, she rambles on in generic terms about nonspecific generalities; not really saying much at all. True, this book is dealing with the conceptual. But please; elaborate with some good examples or analogies rather than restating what you have already restated.
Instead of examples, she will toss out ambiguous, esoteric references that would mean nothing to anyone but a select few. For a representative example: On page 82, when talking about a natural effect achieved in a woodland garden, Ms. Messervy says, "A good example is found in Sir John's Wood at Kingshaye Court near Tiverton in Devon, England." That is it! No diagram, no picture and no further information! Perhaps I am supposed to be impressed with name dropping (Or is it just plain, droppings?) from her world travels. However, her "example" adds nothing substantive to the text.
There are a few photos of Messervy's design work in the book and they are superlative. I wish there were a lot more of them. I don't question that her work embodies the ideals she is promoting. It is just that she does not communicate these very well. There are fragments of insight scattered throughout the book. It is unfortunate that you have to wade through so much verbiage just to find them. I got the feeling that many of these needless words were displaying an underlying desire to remain "Daddy's Little Princess" in her incessant admonishments to "recall your childhood".
I am confident that I could learn a lot from Ms. Messervy if her writing was a bit less allegorical. I have a hard time swallowing statements like: "The body of your mother was your first and perhaps most indelible landscape." Umm ... Julie, babe ... You obviously don't know my mom!
I think her actual design work is good. Curiously, most reviews of this book are good. My opinion is at odds with most reviews and espoused content. I suspicion she has a really good publicist as opposed to a really good book. :-(
IronBelly
A book on the psychology of gardesn.......1998-11-12
Unlike most garden books that focus on individual design elements of gardening, this one focuses on how to identify the atmosphere and mood of the garden you want to create. The author tells readers to think back to those places that have given them the greatest joy and ease, either as children or as adults, and to use the memory of these places in creating a retreat or garden of the mind in one's own yard. You should read this book before all others
Putting Foundations Under your Dream Garden.......1998-07-18
Messervy has found a way to codify something that seemed vague to me: the "feel" of a landscape, or how a person reacts to a space. She breaks landscape forms down into 7 "archetypes," lists the features of each, then suggests ways to use this new understanding in designing your own yard or garden. I suddenly realized, for example, that the narrow, paved alleys coming off my tiny city backyard weren't necessarily the problem and disappointment I had always considered them, but were features I could play up and turn to advantage. (They had always tempted me to walk to the end -- now I just have to make that journey worthwhile.) I was just bursting with ideas after reading this book, able to look at my tiny space with new eyes. The archetypal business isn't just pleasantly mystical but is also practical, backed up with sophisticated but down-to-earth ideas. It's a different kind of garden design book that gets you to think of the overall "f! eel" (not look) you want first (the step missing from most gardening books), and then figure out how to actually construct it -- a satisfying blend of mythic/artistic with practical and well-organized. (And as a bonus, the photos are drop-dead gorgeous!)
The One Book That Belongs In Any Gardener's Library.......1998-07-06
Julie Moir Messervy has written what undoubtedly will become a classic of garden writing and design. Deeply literate and beautifully written, The Inward Garden gives the reader a process for designing one's "dream garden". Based on garden archtypes: the sea, the cave, the harbor, the promitory, the island, the mountain, and the sky, this book provides a structure for imagining the garden of one's desires and a practical process for designing this deeply felt garden. The author describes in detail each of these archytical gardens. Each archtype is illustrated with outstanding garden photographs. The Inner Garden gently asks the reader to think and feel deeply about the garden of his or her dreams and to have the couage to begin creating that garden.

Book Description
Rags, old iron. With the cry of the ragman calling for secondhand goods, enter the poor but jubilant world of Millie Petrov, an immigrant girl whose parents traded the harsh Eastern European peasant life for a new beginning in America. Visit the St. Louis of the 1920s and this bustling immigrant neighborhood, where the clatter of streetcars is background music for the colorful family who lives in the upstairs flat at 2943 Chouteau Avenue: Mama and Papa, Millie and her seven brothers and sisters. In this crowded two-room flat, the Petrov family struggles to learn English and become good Americans. Here they eat lard on bread for dinner because Papa searches for that million-dollar invention rather than working for somebody else. Mama has her sad face on as she steps off the streetcar at the end of the day, stooped and tired from scrubbing floors for other people. But Millie and the kids enjoy their childhood, poor or not—years full of mischievous adventures, hilarious escapades and touching moments. Watch as through it all, love of country and their belief that family is everything triumphs over every hardship. Join Millie as she draws from her rich well of memories to take you on a joyous and heartwarming journey into America's not-too-distant past and a Serbian girl's first decade in America.

Great book. Paints such a vivid picture of her childhood. It helped me to relate to how life must have been like for my grandmother who was also a child of immigrants. I enjoyed the book very much. I hope there is a part two of her and her siblings' teen years.
