Best thing I brought on my vacation........2007-10-17

This was the most useful thing I brought to Tokyo. I used it every day I was there, and the bilingual feature came in handy considering many fare charts and train stations don't have the Anglicized spellings of routes/stations prominently displayed.

It was most useful when I found my train line unexpectedly delayed/indefinitely shut-down one evening and had to find my way to the next station to get home. Or when I thought Yoyogi Park looked like a short walk from the top of the Met. Gov't Building and took off on foot, only to get a very interesting route through several wards before finding the park. Even though I was quite off course, the map was accurate, reflected the landmarks (good luck finding a named street), and made getting around easy. I got lost but could always reference the map and find my way home.

My only criticism is that it did not go into much detail beyond central Tokyo and I spent some time in outlying areas. Obviously it's a large city and hard to pack so much into a still-portable book, but something of the suburbs would be nice in future editions.

At the advice of others.......2007-08-24

I recently went to Tokyo. Before I got there I thought I'd be lost if there was no way to figure out the somewhat strange addressing system in use there. Well, as it happened, you can get lost just the same (especially if you're looking for an establishment that closed two years ago!). I think the map is quite good but one has to keep in mind that if one is lost with the map, it's as good as not having a map if you can't speak Japanese.

Don't even think about going to Tokyo without it. .......2007-08-16

Quite simply, this atlas is worth its weight in gold. There are few street address systems more confusing than the Japanese variety, streets are rarely labeled (and even then, if you don't read Japanese, you're usually sunk), and guidebook maps, as I know from rueful experience, look precise and then require half an hour circling several look-alike blocks in confusion.

To all these problems, the Bilingual Atlas is the solution. Streets are labeled in Japanese and in romaji, block numbers are clearly designated, shrines, temples, hotels, stores and almost every conceivable point of interest are clearly labled, and the maps even mark where the various subway station exits deposit commuters. The subway and train maps are comprehensive and as easy to understand as anything you'll find.

My only complaint? The pages aren't completely waterproof, as I found out the hard way one night in Shinjuku.

thank god we bought this book.......2007-08-12

this is an indispensible guide for tokyo. do yourself a favor and buy this book if you plan to be in tokyo longer than a week. we would be lost without it. hell is coming back as a tokyo mailman!!!!!

Good Maps, but heavy to carry........2007-07-16

While I did use this book a lot (I had the paperback version), I found it heavy to carry. What I did most days was refer to it and cross referance with my paper map, plan our days travels and then leave it back at our apt. I brought my paper map everywhere.
I like to tear out the sections of the travel book that I will need for the day to cut down on weight and bulk. Since we needed umbrellas(it rains a lot in Tokyo), Jackets and water bottles, camara, hats and maps it was all a bit cumbersom.

This is the book I keep in my backpack.......2001-02-05

When getting around Tokyo, this is *the* map book to use. It has detailed street maps of Tokyo, with special extra high detail pages for a number of popular areas. You can find your way to a specific address with these maps - down the block number or sometimes building number. The exits of subway stations are labeled. And the maps contain both Kanji and Roman type, so you can easily show it to Japanese people to help find your destination.

The typography of these maps is very clear and the layout of the book is very nicely organized. I haven't found anything better for getting around Tokyo.

The larger Tokyo Metropolitan Atlas by Shobunsha is also quite useful, covers more areas west and south of Tokyo proper , but is somewhat larger to carry, and doesn't have the detail in the "blow up" maps of popular areas in the city.

Goes everywhere with me...........2000-07-28

I first ran into this book in 1990, when I made my first trip to Japan on business. Since then, I have had 3 editions, and, as I now live in Tokyo, my dog-earred copy travels in my briefcase or backpack everywhere I go.

MOST of Tokyo has signs using Roman characters (romaji), but, there are still some train stations, or street signs that are in kanji characters only.

Lost? You can use this map to "match" the characters, even if you cannot read the kanji! Every station, street, river, ward, neighborhood is printed both in romaji and kanji. There are train maps and subway maps, with banks, hotels, and other places well marked.

I invest in each new edition right away, and I give this book as a gift to each of my friends who come visit me in Tokyo, as well as each new ex-patriot who arrives in my office!

Turns a Tokyo visit into a meaningful adventure........2000-07-09

This Tokyo (and Yokohama) atlas is a highly focussed explorer's guide to what is surely the most difficult-to-navigate metropolis on earth.

Tokyo's system of three hyphenated numbers signifying the location of an address will strike the westerner as highly irrational, and is often an alientating concept for even the regular visitor.

The Tokyo City Atlas, a comprehensively bilingual city guide, features a foolproof system of detail and large-scale maps with every city block clearly marked. Japanese address-finding could not be made easier -- this is the one book I wish I had taken with me on my first visits to Tokyo, and it is the one that will travel with me on every future visit to this most exciting of cities.

This book can be quite confusing at times, and is best used with a teacher in a class. It's not designed for self-study. There are quite a few errors in the book as well. The editor needs to go through it again and fix the mistakes. Some sections introduce a grammar point, and then offer NO practice for that point.

Grammar in Context.......2001-05-02

In response to Chen-Wu's review: This reviewer is confusing the instructor's manual, which has tests and answers, with the main text, which has about 400 pages of contextualized grammar presentations, charts, exercises, and activities.

A misleading message.......2001-03-16

The book though titled Grammar in Context (ESL Series) is actually a booklet of about 48 pages with merely some drills and keys in it. The book is of no use unless you already have Grammar in Context (paperback edition). In my opinion, this booklet should be treated as an attachment to the original book Grammar in Context and ought not to be sold separately . Besides, all the bookreviews under the item are related to the original book Grammar in Context (paperback edition). So be careful when you order the book. I suggest the bookreviews under this item be removed.

The early years of the twentieth century were a much simpler time in terms of technology, relationships and activities. Everyday events were captured in the form of drawings and these drawings were published in women's magazines. The illustrations in this collection were taken from those magazines and are now in the public domain. Therefore, they can be used to add a nostalgic flavor to graphic projects. People are depicted doing many things, doing farm and household chores, celebrating holidays, and modeling clothes. With so many different high quality images, you can no doubt find something for your project in this collection.

A fascinating glimpse into the past.......2001-07-21

"Spot Illustrations from Women's Magazines of the Teens and Twenties: 828 Cuts of Women, Family, Home, Garden, etc." is a valuable historical sourcebook. The collection has been compiled and arranged by Judy M. Johnson, who also provides an introduction.

The illustrations in this book depict the hair styles, clothing, and hat styles of this era. The illustrations also depict ideal women engaging in various activities: dancing, going on a horse drawn carriage ride, cooking and doing other household chores, etc. There are pictures of wedding dresses, home exteriors and interiors, etc.

Yes, these pictures undoubtedly present a sanitized portrait of the era. But this book is an interesting visual resource which opens a window onto the social values of the years from 1910-1929.

Wonderful collection of graphic art from the 1910's & 1920's.......1998-04-26

This Dover publication is a collection of graphic art from magazines and children's literature published in the
1910's and 1920's. The cuts are in black and white and
are mainly line drawings and silhouettes. Many I can remember from my mother's childhood books that she
used to read to us as children. The illustrations were
collected by the author and her family over the years and limited permission is given for their use in graphic
and crafts applications. They would be wonderful for
use in newsletters, invitations, scrapbooks, decorative
painting, etc. Most of the illustrations are of women and
children, but there are some of men, scenery, and special occasions such as Christmas, Easter, winter, and spring. A companion book by the same author is

Anthony Quinn, perhaps best known as Zorba the Greek, is only one of many actors whose Mexican origins were once concealed, and there are many others whose Latino roots have only recently come to public attention, ranging from Rita Hayworth (born Margarita Cansino) to John Gavin (born John Anthony Golenar) to Raquel Welch (born Raquel Tejada). And it was a young Emilio Estevez who boldly reclaimed his own Latino family history and thus revealed to the world that the real name of his father, Charlie Sheen, is Ramon More often Latino actors found themselves in an awkward dilemma in Hollywood, as the authors of "Hispanics in Hollywood" point out--if their Latino identities were not concealed, they were put to use in depicting stereotyped Latino characters: "maids, slum dwellers, drug addicts and gang members," co-author Luis Reyes reminds us, or "cruel dictators, mustachioed bandits and beautiful señoritas." Only in the last couple of decades have Latino actors and directors enjoyed the opportunity to tell stories about their own heritage in a more open, honest and affirming voice in movies such as "Zoot Suit," "La Bamba," "Stand and Deliver," "Selena" and "A Walk in the Clouds." Interesting and comprehensive guide.......2007-08-29

Latino Writers and Journalists is a book that I will have on my coffee table for frequent reference, along with my dictionaries. It includes the biographies of over 150 Latino writers and journalists who have helped shape Latino literature and who should be a point of reference to all aspiring writers, literature students and avid readers. It almost reads like a book of short stories, and features well-known contemporaries such as Jorge Ramos, Isabel Allende and María Elena Salinas, as well as others who do not enjoy the same popularity but are nevertheless cornerstones of modern literature. Interesting, useful and a must in every Latino home.

Book Description

Latin Americans have long been relegated to the cultural background, obscured by the dominant European culture. This biographical dictionary profiles 75 artists from the United States and 13 nations of Central and South America and the Caribbean, including painters, sculptors, photographers, muralists, printmakers, installation artists, and performance artists. Some of their works recall pre-Columbian times; others confront the cultural imperialism of the U.S. over Latin America; and many explore how the dominant elements of culture can affect identities of class, gender, and sexuality. Profiled artists range from the renowned to the little-known: Frida Kahlo; Tina Modotti; Diego Rivera; Myrna Baez; Raquel Forner; Patrocino Barela; and many more. Color photographs are provided for many of the works. Each entry includes information about the artist's childhood, schooling, creative growth, and artistic styles and themes.
