Very complete reference.......2006-11-11

I found this book very handy! First it covers the seven regions of Costa Rica, then goes into the history and culture of the country overall.

It points out a lot of worthwhile sites to see, like the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, choosing a beach, the national parks.

Then it has what it calls Close Ups, little sidebars that cover things like futbol (soccer), how to navigate cities where the streets have no name, the Carnaval, cloud forests, and so on. All great stuff.

There are more than 20 maps, including a pull-out map, that really come in handy.

As usual, Fodor's does an excellent, comprehensive job!

There is very little actual information on the country in this book. It's mostly just places to stay. The Moon book on Costa Rica is vastly superior, with the new Lonely Planet coming second.

Great book to be used as a teaching aid........2004-10-04

This book is great in the sense that it is a basic book to allow a non-English speaker to learn to make conversation. Filled with pictures and sketches, it allows the reader to interpret the scene.

Ten chapters break conversation into usable pieces, such as Personal Identification (who you are; how old you are, etc.), family, health, transportation, housing, food, clothing, as well as others. Also, American money is shown in coin and dollar form and allows the student to study the amounts of each.

At the start of each chapter, there is a list of essential vocabulary. This is best used with a tutor so that the learner can hear the pronunciation of various words and sounds.

What I love the best about this book is that it allows students a sense of autonomy. They can make notes on pictures and words, and it provokes discussion so the student is forced to interpret the scene and then translate it to the tutor. This also allows insight to the teacher to know what to work on and what is no longer a problem for the student.

Geared for adults; lives up to its title........1998-07-11

This book is a quick and easy tool for ADULT refugees and immigrants who must learn English to survive in the United States. It incorporates vocabulary, syntax, writing, and culture in each module; and users are practicing simple dialogues from the first lesson. The drawings and exercises are practical and reinforce the principles of the lesson. Unlike other ESL (English as a Second Language) books, this one is geared toward adult learners, rather than children or traditional students. Don't expect a grammar book, this one teaches English exactly as it says in its subtitle: English Through Conversations. Two cautionary notes: Users must be able to recognize and write the letters of the English alphabet to get started on solid footing, and, to get the most out of this book, there needs to be an instructor or tutor to correctly pronounce the words.

Far more comprehensive than most similar books for the Great Lakes and upper midwest. Considerably more accessible than the typical work with this breadth. It will be an excellent field reference for wetland professionals, plant ecologists and allied disciplines. The drawings are good quality, picking up key differences in appearance among groups such as the sedges - critical for professional users. I look forward t using it on my trips to wetlands in the northern midwest as both casual botanist and plant ecologist.

Well-organized, informative, and accessible to all........1999-03-09

The Great Lakes region has some good plant books already in use, noteably Plants of the Chicago Region, the flora bible for many. As a practicing wetland professional I am always on the lookout for references that make my life easier. This book really fits the need, while remaining accessible to non-professionals. By providing wetland habitat descriptions, as well as solid information on each family and species, the book really adds to the discussion of the Great Lakes flora. Illustrations in the book are detailed enough to serve as a diagnostic tool, enabling the careful reader to separate similar species readily by eye, as well as by technical detail, a feature lacking in some other regional plant reference books.

I like the book. I wish that it would have 1 photo of each town it mentions. I also think it misses some very small villages along the coast, we were really hoping that we could find a book that goes into more details about the "off the beaten path" places. But for the bigger places of interest, I think this book does great about the details.
