VERY POOR- CHOOSE ALTERNATIVES.......2007-04-10

American bashing is for pedantic cave people. Regarding this book, it is perhaps the poorest language tool for acquiring Czech on the market. It might look nice in its package, and Lonely Planet might lend confidence in the product, however my review comes from 2 sides. From Czech Speakers themselves, and as learner of the language to whom this book was left to me.

Let me just say this, if my Czech friends want to have a laugh, they request I bring this book with me to the pub! Avoid this book and demand quality from Lonely Planet, not a half baked product out to suck quick tourist money.....

GET THE VERSION WITH THE ATTACHED CD!!!.......2007-01-20

The person who pointed out the problems with the phonetic translations in this book is completely correct. I'm not saying this just because I'm an American and I expect everyone to speak as I do (if I felt that way, why would I be using this book?). The thing is that the Czech language isn't very similar to English. If I had pronounced "prosim" (the most useful word in Czech) as "prah-sim" (the way this book leads you to believe) I would have been completely wrong. Fortunately, the version I bought also came with a CD. (The CD doesn't follow the book, but it still has the important words and phrases.) The point is: YOU MUST LISTEN TO AUDIO RECORDINGS OF CZECH IN ORDER TO PRONOUNCE IT PROPERLY. No matter how good the phonetic transcription is, Czech is just too different from English to sound it out.

Good, but with a few problems..........2007-01-19

I am not a language specialist, but I found some flaws with this book, most especially with the phoenetics written next to the Czech text. For example, according to the book, the letter o sounds like "the o in 'dot'". Now this makes perfect sense within the context of the book. But in the introduction, it tells us the author "was born and educated in Czechoslovakia, and has been living in Australia since 1983." This tells me that the guide to the vowels are based upon the Australian/British vowel system. So the Australian pronunciation of "dot" has a more pronounced "o", while the American "dot" sounds almost like an "ah." My concerns of this were proven when I listened to recordings of certain Czech phrases by native speakers ("prosim," or "please," does not sound like "prah-seem," like the book may lead an American to deduce).

Also, vial phrases to traveling are hidden in various places in the book. The phrase "where are the toilets" is hidden on page 205, under "emergencies..." I don't categorize needing a toilet as a true emergency (like the phrase "it's an emergency!") But then the most complex phrases are located in the beginning of the book ("Are you here on holiday?" and "How long are you here for?") Perhaps it's just me, but as a traveler in a foreign country, I want to learn the basic phrases before in-depth conversation starters. And, with all due respect, how am I ever to understand the response to the phrase "Are you here on holiday?" in Czech?!!

This book has thousands of phrases you will never need to know. If you want to be able to ask questions and UNDERSTAND the responses, perhaps a real language book or formal class is necessary. And if you can memorize all the phrases in this book before leaving for the Czech Republic, then you probably don't need this book! By the time you find the phrase you need in the heat of the moment, the conversation is dead.

For the information in the book, it is surprisignly compact. The introduction to the language and the culture in the foreword to the book is extensive and informative.

Some of my favorite phrases:

Prilezitostne si dam kokain ("I take heroine occasionaly")
Nerozumel jsem tomu dobre ("I had a few problems with the language")

Yeah, I wonder why.

If you REALLY want to be able to use most of the phrases in this book effectively, you need a language class! This book will give you the essential phrases, but you had better find their page number before leaving on your trip, or you will have your nose buried in its 281 pages!

About the CZ phrasebook and the two earlier reviews.......2004-11-15

I wasn't surprised when I saw that the two earlier reviewers were from the US of A. They actually view it as the phrasebook's shortcoming that in the country at hand they actually speak some English as well. How ignorant is that?! Since the yanks probably won't know the answer to that either, here's the answer: Very. Most of the world does not speak enough English to adequately convey their sentiments, ideas, opinions, whole personality...but does that matter to angloamericans? No, they actually think that a travel experience will be as rewarding whether or not you speak the language of the native residents. As long as they understand your Enligsh, all's well. I hope, for theirs sake as well, that some of these people see the error of their ways.

About the phrasebook then. LP phrasebooks have maintained a standard of excellence and the Czech phrasebook is no exception, everything you could think of needing from a phrasebook of this size is there. A section in grammar kicks things off and even though it's shorter than, for instance, the Spanish PB grammar section, it's useful especially if you're interested in learning more about the Czech language. And I was delighted that the "Dating & Romance" (not included in all of the LP phrasebooks, dunno why) section was there since Czech women are absolutely beautiful :). I highly recommend this book, myslim ze to bylo bájecné!

A good book for someone thrust into handraising.......2007-05-11

A neighborhood feral cat had 4 kittens outside our basement (recessed) window. Because of the commotion there, she moved 2 and abandoned 2. We brought in the abandoned ones when they were 3 days old. So far, they are 2.5 weeks, and growing strong. This book provided valuable, and concise, information to help us through.

You can find tons of information on the Internet about this subject. A lot of the medical information you will find has sites conflicting with each other. (Joy!) This book is easy to understand, has lots of images, and is ASPCA certified.

I strongly recommend it for anyone who is taking the place of a mother cat for newborns.

This is a valuable reference book for anyone who rescues cats. It's very thorough and straightforward, with excellent photos throughout. I'm very pleased with it and will recommend that the rescue group I work with purchase a copy for all new kitten foster homes.

A must for Cat rescuers!.......2002-10-12

This is a very helpful book! Everyone is bound to find a kitten or kittens with out a mom. This book will help you raise them into big healthy cats. I foster newborn orphans from and animal shelter, or just feral cats that are trapped and should sometimes be raised by a person so they will not be taught to be wild by their feral mom. You will learn how to bottle feed or tube feed, how to keep them warm, and much more. I highly recommend it!

A must-have book for anyone raising a kitten.......2001-06-11

Anyone who takes care of stray cats inevitably finds a kitten or a whole litter of them with no mother. "Handraising Kittens" is a must-have for anyone who must see a newborn kitten through the first critical stages of its life. Easterly describes with compassion and in detail the steps necessary feed a kitten, build a nest to keep it warm, teach it to eliminate wastes, and clean it in ways that will not threaten the kitten's life. Easterly also provides sample charts for tracking a kitten's feeding, weight overall progress. If you must raise a kitten yourself, this book is invaluable.

This 638-pages work, published previously by the American Rose Society (ARS), is THE nitty-gritty dig for serious rose growers, plant science researchers; those involved with academic and industrial settings, horticultural nurseries, botanical gardens, and informed amateur enthusiasts. There are descriptions for more than 25,000 roses along with a sparsely populated (28) group of token photographs. The current edition is list priced at $130.00 and includes a CD.

Book needs more pics; CD needs better search capabilities.......2002-07-03

I bought this book and CD in the hopes of being able to identify several rose plants that my husband had rescued from the city's bulldozers. It is not designed for an amateur like me who needs pictures and drawings. I am less interested in the parentage of roses than I am in what the terms "semi-double, reverse, exhibition form, cupped" mean. Some roses did not even have the color of the bloom listed. The CD is great if you know the name of the rose you wish to search for, but cumbersome if you do not. Yes, you can search based on characteristics of a rose, but it's not easy. For example, there are no drop-down menus for options on search criteria. A search for a red rose with a "strong" fragrance yielded no results; "intense" fragrance did. When the results are shown, there is no number count on how many roses fit the criteria, and when you select one rose from the results to view, you must re-perform the search to look at another one. It's extremely frustrating. There are pictures of roses on the CD, but the search result listing does not show you which ones have pictures and which do not. Help is limited to FAQ's (with only two questions listed) and an email address. There is no online method for updating the program so there is no hope of this version becoming any better. ...

The ultimate reference work on roses.......2001-09-05

If you love roses and if you want to know about the full range of rose varieties that you may encounter at your local nursery or in mail order catalogues, this volume is essential. The expense is justified in part by the CD-ROM, which gives you the ability to search the underlying database at will. I enjoyed the pictures (although they don't match other works like Botannica) as well as the articles on famous European rose gardens. In any work of this magnitude there are bound to be errors (e.g., Meilland's Michelangelo is yellow, not pink), but the overall accuracy is very impressive. If you are only dabbling in rose growing, this encyclopedic work is probably more than you need. But if you are crazy about roses, you will be crazy about this book.

Review of Modern Roses XI and CD-Rom.......2000-05-16

This edition of Modern Roses takes a giant step up from the last one! (MR10) By including *all* roses that could be reasonably well-documented, the usefulness of this reference has increased dramatically. In addition, the inclusion of a CD-ROM with great search capabilities is FANTASTIC.

Of course... as with any book of this nature... there are still a few errors in description, etc. However, this is very minor, compared to the volume of information contained.

Useless for Tanzania.......2007-02-08

Three-fourths of this book is dedicated to Kenya. The addition of Tanzania was clearly an afterthought. The descriptions of lodgings are rather generic and there are only a few hotels, attractions, or restaurants listed. On Zanzibar, we did better with a 20 page pamphlet of ads than with this book. Don't waste your money on this book if you're headed to Tanzania or Zanzibar.

Whatever you do- DONT buy this worthless book. Unless you just want to stay in 5 star lodges and do and see NOTHING ELSE. I had the Lonely Planet Kenya that I dragged with me backpacking in Kenya- It was wonderful. The East Africa Lonely Planet is great too. Save your money!

Not for Tanzania.......2004-10-01

The coverage of Tanzania in this book is quite sparse. I did not find it to be useful at all, and a great disappointment. I then went out and bought Lonely Planet's book on Tanzania, and was very pleased with the depth of information it offered, including such things as maps of towns with locations of ATM's, hotels, etc and color photographs. This is a much more useful book if you are going to Tanzania.

I can't help it.

I feel just horrible about it.

But, really, deep down, I found this book...uhh, well...this is so embarassing...

This book is FUN. It's sort of a dark example of a creative exercise...take various pictures from wars through photographic history and write a poem about how that picture makes you feel. Sometimes they're raw, sometimes they're tedious, but the entire exercise is interesting...and, I hate to sound like so damned callous, but...it's FUN.
