Nice.......2007-09-15
Excellent book to give you an idea of Ecuador and help you plan your trip.
Superb Guidebook.......2007-08-07
I went on a one-week long trip in Quito and its surroundings. It was my first trip to South America, also to a country where I do not speak the language fluently. This one had accurate descriptions of places I wanted to see, and it also gave precise directions on how to get to the places that are outside Quito. I have visited extensively the capital and other near areas, and from little-known corner eateries to magical trees, everything is noted in this book. Lonely Planet never failed to amaze me again in this one.
New 7th Edition Offers Important Updated Information.......2006-12-15
I purchased the latest edition of this book shortly after it's release on November, 30 and was very impressed with it's significant improvements over the 6th edition. I bought the previous book 2 years ago and, even at that time, was struck by how out of date and inaccurate some of it's information was. My wife grew up in Ecuador, still has family living there and goes back every year to visit (I go there with her every 2 years). So we, especially she, have a pretty good idea about what is happening in the country in terms of politics, prices and other information relevant to travellers. But we were disappointed how the previous book barely mentioned the major impact of dollarization on the Ecuadorian economy and the substantial increase in prices it has caused. So much so that most Ecuadorian families now have at least one or more family members working overseas in order to send money home just so the family can survive.
Fortunately, the 7th edition provides much more up to date information on this subject and others. Of course, prices for travellers are also more accurate since this edition is "hot off the presses". The book does a good job of covering all regions of the country - the Andes mountains, the Pacific coast and the Amazon rainforest. Lonely Planet, as usual, includes not only the big cities and major tourist attractions. But also small towns and other "off the beaten path" places that may be of interest for those exploring the tremendous natural beauty and cultural diversity that Ecuador has to offer.
Lonely Planet is still among my favorite publisher of travel guides. But, this book, like many LP guides, seems to have moved away from the free-spirited, adventurous approach to travel that characterized it's early years. Nowadays, the guides seem much more inclined to politically correct lectures - no hitchhiking, no intoxicants, be a good little backpacker, blah, blah, blah. Of course, I understand the importance of being respectful towards the environment and local culture, making safe and responsible decisions, etc. But I also feel that LP's writers sometimes have their own political agenda to push and take an overly self-righteous tone that is more indicitative of Western values than Ecuadorian ones. Heck, I'm part of an Ecuadorian family myself now and I know that they would find alot of LP's advice and commentary about "how to behave" to be exaggerated and ridiculous. Ecuadorians are generally a very laid back and fun loving people. Of course, you should be respectful of Ecuador's beautiful nature and diverse cultures. But also relax, enjoy yourself and don't let LP's excessively "politically correct" attitude bog you down.
Still the 7th edition is a big improvement over the 6th and I recommend it for those travelling to Ecuador in the near future.
6th edition 3.5 stars... time for update, guys.......2006-03-26
I'm a Lonely Planet addict who knew better than to blindly buy this edition (if you order one now -6th edition, as I did, you'll get 2003 info), but addicts usually are not known for using their heads.
Quito is rather different nowadays, bus lines are new, and there are different security issues.
At least I can say that 6th ed authors err on the side of caution (eg it's risky to expect to book last minute space on Galapagos boats; or take a taxi at night even if you're going one block), but the exceptions to these dicta are too great to accept that this edition is up-to-date. The errors in museum hours and bus info (Mitad del Mundo, for one) need revision.
Worst thing about ANY Lonely Planet is their system of maps. Reader never gets text of an attraction or restaurant or hotel referenced to map location. AND if you need reading glasses, just forget about using these maps when you're in a dark taxi or dark restaurant (often the places you need to read them). Bringing a magnifying glass is not always easy.
Another grouse... while authors want to tell the traveler that the most conveniences are in the Mariscal Sucre area (gringo landia), they don't leave it at that. They list almost no restaurants & resources outside that area. I thank the authors for including my fringe area hotel in the book, for I can walk to grungy backpacker-ville any time I want to, BUT there is a true pressure towards a kind of "this is where you will stay because most travelers do." Get off the beaten path, fellas!
So, thanks for the tips, but I'm glad I used travelwise.com and other resources. Lonely Planet system may be a thing of the past soon.
You can take it with you.......2006-02-24
I've used LP before for trips. Once you get the book, you are invited to go on-line for up-dates. There you are directed to "The Thorn Tree" forum. I used it just about every day to keep well-informed and prepare for the trip. The guide is an easy ready and full of useful information. Prior uses were very accurate.

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years, and as a result has experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.
Lonely Planet's Equador and the Galápagos Islands takes you from the colonial capitol of Quito to remote Andean villages. You'll learn about volcanoes to climb, jungles to explore, and sea lions to swim alongside. The author includes essential details on conservation issues, ecotourism, national parks, and reserves. Also provided is an excellent 30-page color guide to Galápagos wildlife. --Kathryn True

Great help for budget travelers.......2000-02-24
An excelent guide for people wanting to see Ecuador better than the average tourist, it has wonderfully explained items precious for off the beat explorers. A new edition is needed though due to the devaluation of the Sucre (prices are as lower as a third of what the book says)
Old, but plentiful information.......1999-09-16
Well researched, but rests on its laurels. Many descriptions in this 1997 publication are unchanged from the previous edition, which I believe was 1992. If you publish twice a decade, at least update the research you did 5 years ago.
A very practical, up-to-date view of Ecuador........1999-02-07
My wife and I have lived in Ibarra, Ecuador for a year now. We have used this book extensively in locating a place to live and touring throughout the country. Though the newest edition is now almost two years old, the prices quoted are still very reliable due to the devaluation of the Sucre.
The information provided is very thorough and accurate and is a MUST for anyone traveling to Eucador.
Another triumphant edition, a "must have" for travelers........1998-10-21
This is the third edition that I have owned. I know that I can trust it to be the best, especially on a less than 5 star budget. Great background and vital information for everyone.
Terrific.......1998-08-22
This guidebook only gets better and better with each new edition. I recommend this highly for anyone interested in getting off the beaten track and enjoying the wonders that Ecuador and Ecuadorians have to offer.

Book Description
Indispensable archive for graphic artists and craftspeople contains 24 unique, black-and-white typefaces — all with capital letters and most with lower-case letters and numbers. Includes such lively and versatile fonts as Ambrosia, Carmen, Oceana, Odessa, Siegfried, and Titania. Ideal for adding a turn-of-the-century touch to signs, greeting cards, menus and other projects.
Customer Reviews:
You'll Surely Like These Fonts!.......2006-12-01
I bet you'll find several fonts here that will become favorites. Dan Solo had a huge collection of great old and new type faces. You'll find 24 of them here. The fonts are in both Windows True Type and Macintosh formats. The pages have the complete alphabets and a character chart. Be sure to notice the "extra characters" that are offered in some fonts.
Dan X Solo presents alot of nice fonts in clipart ........1999-06-21
Dover has done alot to preserve the classic graphic artwork of the 19th & 20th century , presenting it as "copyright free" for minor use for those who would rather copy than make there own artwork . Here is a chance to have those fonts at a reasonable price . Dan has done pretty good in the past , but I would like to see what is on it before I buy it. On the other hand, Carol Belanger Grafton has given Dover much better quality collections and I would buy her work without question . Visual preview necessary .

The Ferret is an extremely informative guide on ferret health and behavior that offers practical advice for potential ferret owners, emphasizing that they can be challenging pets. Despite this word of caution, the book is careful to emphasize that ferrets can also be highly entertaining and affectionate animals, and with an estimated seven million pet ferrets in the U.S. alone, it's obvious that pet lovers agree. The 13 chapters range from "Bringing Your Pet Home" to "Training and Socializing" and include tips on properly grooming your pet, signs of disease, and a discussion of how your ferret will interact with other pets. This is a fun read, chock full of ferret trivia and illustrated with full-color photographs of our furry friends frolicking, burrowing, and snuggling.
Product Description
This lovable creature is on its way to being the third most popular companion animal after dogs and cats. Table of Contents: PART ONE: Welcome to the World of the Ferret. 1. What Is a Ferret? 2. great book.......2007-03-13
must own very good book. glad that i bought this book. lots of colored pictures
A good beginner's book on owning a ferret.......2006-12-01
I found this older book to be a good readable starting point in learning about the ferret. I highly suggest it for anyone thinking about adopting a ferret, since it gives you a very good picture of the care involved, including medical issues, ferret-proofing your home, the hopelessly curious nature of the ferret, and daily life with a ferret in general. The only real places it is lacking is in updated advances in veterinary care for certain diseases specific to the ferret, and also in legal issues since many things have changed over the past ten years on that front also. One negative issue, and I've seen this erroneous information in print many times in many places, is the book stating that the lifespan of the ferret is six to ten years. That is true in Europe where ferrets are largely bred in small operations. In the U.S., however, the lifespan is more like five to seven years. Also note that the book doesn't really stress the fact that the ferret is a social animal - not so much with humans as with other ferrets. Ferrets are happiest and most active when they live together in groups of two or three. A ferret will play with you, but don't expect the level of interaction and affection you would get from a cat or dog.
A good started book.......2003-03-09
As a first time ferret owner, I bought this book. It was very helpful with tons of info. All thou not as impressive as the other ferret books, its good enough if your just starting out. You will find each book that is put out on ferrets to have somthing that the book before didnt have..
A nice book, but lacking...........2001-03-18
I think the Sheffermans have wonderful writing skills in thier magazine, but it somehow doesn't work in a book. I found the book a nice addition to my collection of ferret books, as well as pretty enjoyable to read once through. I just felt it was a little lacking in depth for a ferret book. It's a good begginer book, but I think anyone with many years of ferret experience wouldn't find this book as helpful or appealing.
Ferret Mania!.......2000-12-22
I checked out several books on ferrets from the library, and then bought this one. I felt it contained all of the useful, general information a ferret fancier needed. Since I had never owned a ferret when I first owned the book, it answered all of my basic questions. Later as I became more experienced with my pets, I still found useful tips for strange behaviours, suggested treats, etc. Between this book, and the alt.pets.ferrets Usenet group, you'll have all the advice you need to have healthy happy little bouncies!

Hardly about desert plants.......2002-10-25
I returned this book because it was full of advice about how to plant and maintain plants that are not native to the desert: bermuda grass, citrus, grapes, tomatoes, mums...
Almost nothing about the native plants of the desert Southwest. I would not recommend it.
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING.......2001-02-22
THIS BOOK APPEARED TO BE WRITTEN IN THE EARLY 1900'S. THE ILLUSTRATIONS WERE SMALL, OR POOR QUALITY, AND IN BLACK AND WHITE. NOT A SINGLE COLOR PHOTO! COMPREHENSIVE INSTRUCTIONS ON SOIL PREPARATION, I.E.LEVELING THE SOIL ETC. VERY LITTLE ON ANUALS, COLOR, BALANCE, OR ANYTHING ESTHEITCALLY PLEASING. THIS BOOK WAS A CHORE TO LOOK THROUGH.
very good book.......2001-02-03
I like this book because it has a lot of information if you are starting out or just adding or changing things. There was a lot of information on soils and fertilizers and ways to plant and what to look for and ways to water and how to save money and on and on. I would have liked a list of plants and information about them but that is all I can think of that isn't here.
Garden Guru for the Desert.......2000-09-03
A man of the soil. Brookbank has turned this lowly phrase into a high compliment. If any gardener takes these words too lightly without digging deep into the properties of the soil, let him/her beware. For atonement let him be given the task of counting the millions of microbes in a mere handful. With such detailed knowledge of the chemistry of plant life Brookbank is a desert gardening guru......Advice on what to plant, how to make a soil probe, and exactly how to install an irrigation system, is clearly presented. There are wonderful illustrations throughout the book. Are you sure you know how and when to use fertilizer? Read how plants extract nutrients from the soil-- these are valuable words that must be read with close attention for a real understanding of what's going on below visible plant life. You will stop thinking of soil as mere dirt.....A hard lesson for many gardeners to learn: don't fight nature. The advice on "What to Do When Things Go Wrong" will solve many problems. Recognize your poor gardening decisions. "Had you done the right thing," Brookbank says, "there wouldn't be any problem.".....Read on and learn: establishing year round color, caring for hedges, lawns, roses, palm trees, wildflowers, cacti, and how to dig up plants and move them. Vital to know re cacti. Everything is here and every gardener, novice or expert, will benefit.....I'll be leaving Atlanta and moving to Tucson this Fall so the chapter "When You Move into and Empty House" gave me good advice. The key is to take your time, look around and make notes as you observe. "Don't prune yet and don't remove the plants that irritate you." This comment really got to me. The man understands that some plants are just un-standable. One man's marigold is another man's poison ivy!.....Brookbank closes with a very useful monthly reminder list of what chores need your attention now. Take Novemeber: "Chart garden tempera- tures in various areas so you know how to act when a frost warning is issued. With a chart of your grounds you can see whether you are colder or warmer than the weatherman's predic- tions. A few degrees do make a big difference." Landscaping is a never-ending learning process. To be a man or woman of the soil is an honorable achievement. --by Nellie Nichols madytodd@mindspring.com

A significant addition to academic library collections.......2006-12-05
Jan Tschichold, Designer: The Penguin Years is a seminal and impressive contribution to the history of publishing with its focus on Jan Tschichold and his influence with respect to the typographic revolution that was applied to Penguin's mass production of books for the general populace. Author Richard B. Doubleday (Assistant Professor of Art, Department of Graphic Design, College of Fine Arts, Boston University) brings a special research-based expertise to providing an historical and analytical survey of Tschichold's contributions during the mid to late 1940s that saw the emergence of a wide ranging Penguin Book Series that included both fiction and non-fiction. Many of Tschichold's preliminary hand drawn cover and title page designs are made public for the first time in order to demonstrate and document his meticulous attention to detail and the development of his `New Typography'. Enhanced with the inclusion of an extensive bibliography on Tschichold's writings and historical appendices of his inter-office memoranda and texts, "Jan Tschichold, Designer" is a significant addition to academic library collections on the history of publishing, and an especially recommended for students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in typography, book design, and the publishing industry.

Book Description
Of the mysterious Night Blooming Cereus, Mary Cappello writes: "The flower fell into our neighborhood like a shooting star." That neighborhood was a working-class suburb of Philadelphia riven by class distinction and haunted by contradiction. In tracing the marks that immigration and assimilation have left on her Italian-American family, Cappello also offers us her family's unsung art-their gardens, letters, and rosary beads-for the lessons they teach us about desire, creativity, and loss.
