Customer Reviews:
Disappointed--save your money.......2007-07-23
I ordered this book because it was about the only book specifically devoted to Cabo. I was very disappointed. I carried the book to Cabo and back but didn't really use it. If you strip away the generic "travel" information and the history information, this book contains little that is useful. The restaurant reviews are good, but not all restaurants are covered. The reviewers below had more valuable suggestions than this book, such as -- don't rely on credit cards, bring cash, small bills.
The book is woefully out of date. It doesn't even contain a decent map!
don't leave home without it.......2006-03-23
I took a hastily-arranged last minute trip to Cabos, not having had any vacations in 20 years -- and not having much money. I knew we needed expert advice fast, so, trusting Fodor's, we got this book. We ate exclusively at restaurants recommended by this book (we had a car rental.) We made sure we hit both the most expensive place recommended by the book and the least expensive joint that they recommended. Both were equally highlights of the trip. The rest of the time, we ate at recommended places that were towards the lower end of the price scale. We were never disappointed! At Macambo's and Ahorcado, I even took pictures of the food. These were the kinds of places that you would never find by wandering around the tourist area -- let's just say they were "out of the way" and a few a little out of the comfort zone of some tourists. Are we ever glad we took that book! A piece of advice -- take more cash, in small bills, than you think you'll need. If you need emergency medical care like I did (not Montezuma's Revenge, BTW) you'll have to pay hundreds in cash. Far fewer places take credit cards than do in the US. And by all means, take this book. They know what they're talking about.
Los Cabos Guide very helpful.......2006-03-14
We went to Cabo in February 2006 and found this guide very, very helpful. I don't know what other guides are available, but this one is packed with accurate info (if just slightly out of date as it is a year or two old). It omits a couple of new restaurants that have recently opened but is otherwise very accurate. The recommendations of activities, hotels, places to eat and things to see were spot-on. I think it's worth getting if, like us, you do not know the area. Also, it is small and lightweight and you can just stick it in your pocket or purse. We went to a few restaurants we never would have found but for this guide, and generally they were better than what our hotel had recommeded.
Great Gift.......2006-01-07
I gave this to my brother who is going on his Honeymoon to Cabo. A great resource to bring along, especially if you cannot access the internet.
Perfect companion for Cabo.......2003-11-02
This book was a wonderful companion in Cabo San Lucas. The recommendations were right on target, the writing is enjoyable and entertaining, while providing useful information at the same time. I highly recommend this book as it made my vacation more enjoyable!
Customer Reviews:
HARNESSING TIME TO WRITE!.......2007-05-18
For years, I worked 12-hour days and my average roundtrip commute was 3 hours, which left only evenings and weekends for my writing. It was very difficult to write even during those off-hours because I always felt burnt out and not very creative.
However, two years ago I relocated from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles and now I work from home which affords me much more time to write. I was amazed, though, to find, that even with all the free time I have that I still found it difficult to write. So, I decided to pick up this book. Now, I know that I'm not alone--a lot of what I've gone through is shared by other writers.
In this book, Atchity explains how to get the most out of your time and become more productive. Among the most valuable sections for me (& there were MANY) were the ones that dealt with attention span, procrastination, checklists, index cards and using a stopwatch.
I've now reorganized my writing time, space, and find myself to be MUCH more productive. I'm also carrying a stopwatch around the house all day--not that he advocates getting so carried away with it--but I find it very useful in managing my time. I know. . . sounds odd, but hey, whatever works.
Other notable sections are those on recapturing creativity and understanding fear and anxiety. The author helps the reader to understand both and use them to our advantage. It was so helpful to learn that anxiety is a NORMAL part of the process and a writer's life. I was beginning to think it was a mental disorder. NOW, I know better. ;)
I also posted, above my computer, some of the many inspirational quotations which are sprinkled throughout (oh, and the last chapter is chock full of them). Priceless, priceless words of wisdom that never fail to get me going. ;)
I also recommend "How to Publish Your Novel" by this author. IMMENSELY helpful for aspiring novelists. . . and published novelists who realize that there's always more waiting to be learned.
A Must-Have for Writers.......2007-03-06
I found this book to be an excellent resource for organizing ideas and approaching a project. I've started several writing projects in the past and became discouraged when I would hit that inevitable "brick wall". Atchity sheds tremendous light on writer's block, tapping into your creative writing voice, and says it in a way that is easy to understand. A very helpful addition to the personal library for a writer of any genre.
Gold Mine For All Writers.......2006-08-22
"A Writer's Time"(Revised and Expanded Edition) is a gold mine of ideas and suggestions for the writer at any level. This is one book that will stay on my book shelf, along with all the other reference books I could not do without. You'll feel as if you have hit the mother-lode with the invaluable information and strategies for organization. It is written by a writer with complete understanding of the writer's mind. I also found it to be extremely motivating. I often found myself shaking my head up and down as I was reading, as if the Author Kenneth Atchity, could read my mind, or knew exactly what I needed to hear.
Atchity delves into several subjects relating to writing, that would probably take several courses, or years of experience on your own to learn. He teaches you to Manage and make the most out of your time. He also advises little "vacations" away from your project as well. You'll also take away with you from the read, cause to celebrate each and every step you take towards your goals(as opposed to kicking yourself for not getting enough accomplished).
Here are just some of the nuggets to devour from your read. Finding the Time..Step by step management techniques... Organizing a system(he lays out a fabulous card system that is easy and makes great sense)...Researching...Agendas for both Non-fiction and fiction writers, with excellent examples... Your work time related to getting published(some great tidbits here that everyone should read), Putting Your Dreams into a storyline(this is especially interesting for the fiction writer), An informative and educational look at breaking into Show Business for the screenplay or TV writer,(this chapter had some fabulous illustrations that brought everything into perspective)...And last but not least, Recapturing the Creativity from a slump. He tops it off with words of inspiration from some great literary figures(and other great minds). Words that you can turn to at any time, for a little pick-me-up. Here is one of my favorites: "I cannot hold my tongue, nor my pen. As long as I live, I must write"...George Bernard Shaw, at 91. I even found the bibliography helpful for future projects.
There are many creative, motivational and inspirational suggestions to be found here. Written by one with vast experience on the subject. Atchity points the way.Extract what you like and see which ideas work best for you. For myself, I tried the card system on a smaller scale. Not for a book, but for an article, and I can tell you, that I was amazed at how well I managed my writing time, and what I accomplished with it. By the end(actually way before), you will feel the need to write, write, write.
It's a Writer's Gold Mine. Strike it rich with this read, and try to restrain yourself from doing the Walter Huston "we found the gold" dance(Treasure of the Sierra Madre")!....Laurie
Real-world techniques that work!.......2006-07-11
I absolutely love this book. It has probably done more to help me be a productive writer (11 published books, more than 350 articles) than anything else (besides the brainstorming technique I learned from Writing the Natural Way). Whether you're wirting nonfiction, fiction or screenplays, Atchity shows you how to manage your own mind and the creative process so that you can accomplish what you want in a most efficient--even fun--way. He also covers some of the business end of publishing. I have found all his techniques thoroughly sound and workable in the real world of writing and publishing. You won't regret it if you buy and use this book.
You don't need a Muse, you need "A Writer's Time"!.......2006-07-01
I can't begin to describe how much this book has helped me as a
writer. I own several dozen books on writing, but this one really stands out. It taught me how to write without waiting for my Muse and it showed me how to summon my creative thoughts on demand. It is with the help of "A Writer's Time" that I was able to finish a feature outline in four weeks. It should be mandatory reading for film schools everywhere.
Book Description
Selected from a wealth of rare, authentic 19th-century sources, this collection abounds in professional-quality nautical images. 425 black-and-white maritime illustrations range from sailors and ships of every era to fish, turtles, and seashells — plus swimmers, deep-sea divers, harbors, anchors, lighthouses, mermaids, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Great, unusual, low-priced gift!.......2006-09-20
"Old-Fashioned Nautical Illustrations" is a wonderful additon to the Dover Publications library of clip art books/CD-ROMs. The 425 images in this particular collection range from the expected (sailboats, seahorses, lighthouses, etc.,) to the wonderfully silly (frogs rowing a boat; doughty sailors carrying fainting damsels from the sea , etc.,). The CD-ROM is accessible via both Windows and MAC, installs easily, and is a breeze to use. Each image is available in 6 different formats (TIFF,PICT,EPS,BMP,JPEG and GIF). At under $20, this would make a great, inexpensive gift for someone who loves all things nautical.
Book Description
Over half the children in America are from disrupted or dysfunctional homes. The eight stories in this book bring the Beatitudes of Jesus to life by showing kids who had it tough, but who learned to be godly in spite of their circumstances. Our past cannot be used as an excuse for ungodliness. This book was written to help kids avoid that trap. Children young and old will learn the eight Beatitudes when they stop to think and answer the questions at the beginning and end of each story. Both parents and their children will look forward to visits to the Hall of Champions-and will find that some of the godly character from O. Whillikers's friends will rub off with each visit.
