Customer Reviews:
A very poorly produced book!.......2007-10-03
This is arguably the most sloppily produced book I ever read:
The number of misspelled Yiddish words is enormous; the most frequenly recurring one is zid in place of zikh, or stub for shtub, cheyli for kheylik (or cheylik), toches-lecher for toches-lecker, etc. The gender of words is often wrong (di for der or vice versa).
The etymology of words is often inaccurate. The most blatant example:
Bobe-mayse is not derived from a story your grandmother told you, and you are free to use the word in her presence. It comes from a 16-th century translation into Yiddish by Elja Levita of the Italian romance "Bovo d'Antona" published under the name of "Bobe-bukh".
I am tempted to send the book back to Amazon for a $ 10 refund, even if I have to pay for return shipmen!
Accurate cover baloons--a little scary regarding "curses".......2007-06-19
I should have considered that the cover indicates "curses". There are plenty of mean-spirited curses, which frankly scared me; these are clearly idiomatic within Yiddish language, but were not what I expected. I should have purchased a Yiddish dictionary or thesaurus for my interest level. The book contains much more, and the curse section (i.e., a hex or spell vs. calling people nasty names when they take your parking spot) is not primary, and there are plenty of OTHER areas of the book which are FUN and INTERESTING. It's a personal choice, obviously, so a potential reader shouldn't disregard the book based on MY superstitious nature alone! I guess I just wanted to understand the terms I've heard TO SWEAR for my own venting agenda.
emes.......2007-01-12
Very funny, especially if you have a non-Yiddish speaker read it out loud.
I bought two copies as gifts. If you grew up hearing Yiddish, now you have the translations of what the Bubbe's were saying.

See Michael Chabon.......2006-05-13
There's a great review of this book at Michael Chabon's website. You can get to it by googling for "Yiddish phrasebook".
Fun!.......2005-01-15
There aren't many places left in the world where Yiddish is the primary language; exactly why there would be a travel-phrase book like this one is a little bit perplexing to me. Of course, it was published decades ago, and apparently hasn't been reprinted since, so used copies are the way to acquire this little gem. It is organised in the typical fashion on any travel phrase book - basic expressions; greetings and general social conversation; travel expressions concerning hotels, boats, airlines, etc.; useful words about the house; sports, school, professions; and, of course, café and restaurant information. There are also sections for numbers, dates, seasons, and the like.
As the introduction states, whenever Yiddish is spoken, it is usually through the lens of dialects - Yiddish not having a solid geographic home in terms of major national or primary language support, the language is (for all its 'traditional' aspects) a rather fluid thing. Yiddish is, unlike English and more like German, fairly consistent in spelling and pronunciation, so once the basic pattern of pronunciation of letters is mastered, the speech is relatively simple to engage. Yiddish has strong Germanic tones despite being written in the Hebrew (Aramaic) script - this phrase book incorporates the original script as well as transliterated pronunciation. Yiddish, like Hebrew, is written and read right to left, but the transliterations are put in left-to-right for ease of English speakers.
Yiddish has had a good deal of influence in English through popular use, entertainment and literature, as well as some business and marketplace uses. Yiddish is becoming more popular in recent years, including being used in schools in some parts of North America as an important secondary language.
This is a phrase book, not a grammar. It shows the rudiments of pronunciation and provides handy access to ready-made phrases, but does not develop ideas of grammar and syntax, nor does it have any background of history or sociology - like a travel phrase book, it consists of pages of phrases grouped topically, with an index in the back, and sized to fit easily into a pocket. For a more extensive introduction to the Yiddish language, one might combine this with the book Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning Yiddish by Rabbi Benjamin Blech.
For a travel phrase book, it is a real gem.
Hebrew alphabet.......2004-08-05
Most Yiddish books only use transliteration. This is difficult because everyone has a different way of doing that. I think it is always better to learn the alphabet. Unfortunately I do not live in the right part of the world to use most of the phrases in this book.
An inexpensive disappointment.......2003-12-23
This book is great if you want to say something in Yiddish. It has the English word or phrase, the Yiddish alphabet spelling, and then the phonetic pronunciation. BUT - you can't look up the Yiddish word and get a translation back to English. I have friends who are always throwing some Yiddish phrase at me, I want to know what they are saying! This book doesn't help me with that.
a travel dictionary, not a compendium of Yiddish humor.......2002-01-13
After reading the reviews, I wrongly assumed that this was a book that had a number of humorous phrases in Yiddish. If had known what it really was, I would not have ordered it. I might be the only person on earth that had this mis-conception, however.
Regardless, this is a handly little book. The book is tiny and designed to fit in a shirt pocket, hence the tiny price.
There is an index of words and there are major sections such as "parts of the body" and "business" and "restaurant" vocabulary.
The book is very business like and it is apparent that it is intended to be an easy-to-access phrase book for folks new to Israel or any area with a large Yiddish-speaking population.
Book Description
A cross between Henry Beard's Latin for All Occasions and Ben Schott's Schott's Original Miscellany, JUST SAY NU is a practical guide to using Yiddish words and expressions in day-to-day situations. Along with enough grammar to enable readers to put together a comprehensible sentence and avoid embarrassing mistakes, Wex also explains the five most useful Yiddish words–shoyn, nu, epes, takeh, and nebakh–what they mean, how and when to use them, and how they can be used to conduct an entire conversation without anybody ever suspecting that the reader doesn’t have the vaguest idea of what anyone is actually saying. Readers will learn how to shmooze their way through such activities as meeting and greeting; eating and drinking; praising and finding fault; maintaining personal hygiene; going to the doctor; driving; parenting; getting horoscopes; committing crimes; going to singles bars; having sex; talking politics and talking trash.
Now that Stephen Colbert, a Catholic from South Carolina and host of the "Colbert Report," is using Yiddish to wish viewers a bright and happy Chanukah, people have finally started to realize that there’s nothing in the world that can’t be improved by translating it into Yiddish. Wex’s JUST SAY NU is the book that’s going to show them how.

Great Gift.......2001-06-19
My grandmother turns 95 this week. The last thing she needs is another tchotchke to clutter up her apartment. But one thing she has in abundence is time to read. Another is nostalgia. She sometimes has trouble remembering if she had Corn Flakes our Raisin Bran for breakfast, but she remembers her youth and its joys with utter clarity.
This book turned out to be the perfect 95th birthday present. Already I have heard her chuckle at a long-forgotten turn of phrase and seen her tear up as a proverb or idiom brought back a memory of better days.
While I'm pretty sure the best present I brought her this past weekend was her only great-grandson to enjoy, (he's about to turn four and the apple of her eye), Rahel Rozmarin's fine book runs a close second.
Thanks to Ms. Rozmarin for and effort well worth the time and energy she put into it.

Say It In Yiddish
Weinrich
Manufacturer: Dover Publications
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: B000JEE0L2 |
Product Description
The present work is the first attempt at a Yiddish dictionary, and therefore an entirely original production. In the compilation of this book the author has ha no predecessors to follow, and thus the work undertaken by him has been very difficult; it has consisted in gathering the stray words of the language, in arranging them alphabetically, and in poring over their definitions. This dictionary is the product of six years indefatigable. It has been the desire of the author to make a thorough display of the characteristics of the Yiddish tongue, wherefore has embraced also its vulgar expressions, cant words, and idioms and has given philological explanations of peculiar terms, as well as notes on items bearing on Jewish antiquities, beliefs, customs, ceremonies, games, holidays, etc., all of which will prove highly valuable to the student of language and ethnology. This dictionary has been calculated to serve a double end: to acquaint English-speaking people with Yiddish and to instruct Yiddish-speaking people in English; with a view to the latter, in numerous instances several synonyms have been employed to define a single meaning where a word would do; for the same practical end, in this dictionary have been introduced some of the technical an scientific terms now common to all Indo-European languages, as well as a considerable number of modern German words which have only of late become current in Yiddish writings. Notwithstanding the utmost care taken by the author to make this work complete, important omissions may have been made; he therefore promises to issue a supplement to this dictionary as soon as a considerable number of items omitted will have been discovered by him. For the purpose of teaching English-speaking people to read Yiddish and to acquaint them with its orthography and dialectical variations, a treatise on these subjects is prefixed to this dictionary.

The DEFINITIVE Book On Chinese Carpets........2000-09-07
This is the definitive book on chinese carpets. Period. Before I bought my carpets, I bought this book so that I could learn about the characteristics of Chinese carpets: materials, dyeing, and knots per linear line. Each region has its own workshop and produces magnificent carpets, each with their own distinctive designs. This book also has an excellent chapter on Tibetan carpets, which is significant because when this book was published in 1981 the public really was not aware of thier beauty and value. If you are interested in a DEEPER examination of Chinese carpets and want to round out your collection of books on this subject, then add this one!
Book Description
Twenty-five original dollhouse patterns for making your own Chinese rugs and carpets help turn an enjoyable hobby into an elegant investment. Needlework instructions for stitching and finishing techniques come with color charts, and use only ordinary materials and equipment. “This book will help you turn an enjoyable hobby into an elegant investment.”—Doll Castle News.

Good, but not quite enough.......2001-01-07
I did enjoy this book somewhat because I love Michael Jordan. But it didn't really connect the reader and Michael Jordan like I good book should. Not enough details I guess, or just too many little ones. But I think this is an enjoyable book for a younger person.
