Too many pictures, not enough information.......2007-10-08

I expected more from this book after reading some of the reviews. I do really like the diagrams of the ports and some of the maps seem helpful but other maps are bad with scale and distances just plain wrong. I have also found many spelling errors... who edited this?
My biggest complaint though is the pictures outnumber the information. Some pages have 4-5 photos making each one so small you can't see much of interest in them. And the photos aren't that good to begin with, many actually look like scanned postcards.
This book seems to be a very unprofessional attempt at a travel log. There are other books on the market which do a much better job... don't buy the book just for the diagrams of the ports!

Read this book.......2007-09-12

This book goes into the history of each area. It is very comprehensive and well written. I learned a lot and enjoyed it in the process. The pictures are excellent and each area has a must see list. This book would be a great asset when deciding which excursion to go on. It will also let understand more of what you are seing while you are there.

New edition covers the bases.......2007-05-15

I thought this new edition was very good. It has the info on shore excursions but also provides tips on getting around independently in all the ports. The excellent color photos and maps add greatly to getting a handle on the attractions and focusing on what you what to see. The background on the Mediterranean is also quite helpful. How can you go to this destination without knowing, and wanting to know, the fascinating history of this region.

History Book not a Tour Guide.......2007-05-15

We are planning a Western Med Cruise and wanted to get information on the different ports of call. The description of the book led us to believe this was the book we needed. What we received was a book that provided an extensive history lesson on the Med!

If you want to know about the different ports and what to see and what not to see find another book.

This is more a history book then a guide for where to go - when to take a guided tour and when you can strike off on your own - waste of money - need practical information - left my copy in the ship library.

This is an excellent how-to book, well-worth having. However, do not buy it if you already have Provost's "Beyond Style." "Make Your Words Work" is nothing but a (barely) repackaged version of "Beyond Style," with hardly any useful new material. Shamefully, nothing in "Make Your Words Work" references or even hints at its parentage. This book should have been entitled "Beyond Style, Second Edition."

Provost Rocks!.......2003-04-08

If I am able to write, it is all because of "Make Your Words Work."

Provost sets the tone of this book from the very first page when he asks the question "Can writing be taught?" and answers with "No, throw this book away."

This book taught me real methods for writing and editing what I write.

Provost also includes many exercises that aren't boring, and actually quickly enforce the point he is making in the chapters.

I've owned this book since 1991 and it is a book that I continually reference. And it's not only a great book of information, but it is also a great read.
Be thankful that this book is still available and buy it as soon as possible.

An Invaluable Guide.......2003-03-27

This book was my introduction into the world of good, gripping, and effective writing. I don't think I'll ever find a book more helpful than this. While other How-To-Write books pose good questions but provide very few answers, Provost gives you the lessons and advice that will make your writing sing. The fact that Provost knows what he is talking about is evident as soon as you read the first page. This is a How-To-Write book, and yet it's as hard to put down as a good fantasy novel. I've never read a book that has guided me so masterfully and that has enhanced my own writing so much. It's an invaluable guide to any writer. If you want to write well, buy this book.

Best writing book I've ever read.......2001-02-01

The fact that this book is out of print is a true indicator of how corrupt and twisted the "how to write" publishing industry really is. Why? Because this is the only writing book you'll ever need. So if you had it, you wouldn't have to spend your money on books like "How to write a best-selling novel in 5 minutes" or "YOU can write a classic," or other such stupid "guides," which usually are written by authors who have nothing else to their credit. Why read a book that claims it will show you how to write a best-seller, when the author himself hasn't written a best-seller? Gary Provost doesn't claim that he'll help you write a best-seller, he merely claims that he will help make you a better writer. And if you read the book, follow his instructions, and practice, you will become one. Provost wasn't a best-seller himself, and most of his books are out of print, but that doesn't matter. What matters is, he knew what makes good writing, and what makes writing work. And more importantly, he knew how to TEACH these principles. Hopefully one day this will be back in print. Until then, scour the used bookstores until you find a copy. You will be very glad you did.

This book is really disappointing because it has a lot of photographs of overweight show dogs and not a real worker in the bunch. Mr Sloane's dog are featured, and don't make a terribly good impression. However, if you like looking at overweight showdogs, this might be the book for you

This book offers an excellent technological and pictorial presentation of the Australian Kelpie dog.

Unfortunately, there is not much written about the personality, inexhaustiable energy and total devotion to their human masters. This makes it hard for those people who wish to use this book to decide on a kelpie as either a work animal or a family pet. (The Kelpie is brilliant at both.)

I think the book is more a manual. A more humane (canine) approach would have been attracted me more to this book.

Being a kelpie owner for over thirty years, I was looking for more.

Book concentrates on show dogs, rather than working Kelpies.......1999-05-16

While Mr Sloan shows some nice examples of show kelpies (which are an offshoot of the actual working strain) he neglects the real reason these dogs were developed as a breed. Working Kelpies are the work force in Australia's pastoral farming system and should be given their due. By concentrating on the shorter-legged, heavier-coated and basically non-working show dogs, Mr Sloane has doen the forefathers of the Kelpie breed a serious disservice. Having stated all that, the book does contain some fine photographs of show dogs, which , if one likes such dogs, one might find useful.

This book has a lot of useful information for a collector. Each picture was very clear and close up. The description of each item was very complete. When determining the price for each of items the collector has, they will know what the item is worth.
Therefore, when purchasing a new item for their collection, they will have an idea as to how much to pay for the condition the item is in.

This Garfield Collector's Guide is great. Loaded with nice size full-color pictures and prices. My only disappointment was that there is no catagory for Garfield holiday ornaments. My sister decorates her holiday tree entirely with Garfield. It looks fantastic! I ordered this book for her, so that she may keep track of ornament values. Unfortunatly, this guide covers everything but. It has chapters on plush toys, banks, figurines, McDonalds/Burger King Pormotional items, and more. Everything but holiday ornaments, which is why I give it a 4-star.

Okay so mabye some of it you do, but this book is so packedwith toys, CD's, videos, and books you won't belive it. Not only doyou learn about a lot of Garfield stuff you probibly never knew existed (Like me), you'll also get the 411 on all the stuff you own that's probibly worth a fortune (Better tell your mom to hold on to those birthday napkins you used last year for your Garfield party). Plus a history on Jim Davis, tips and suggestions on how to get into the cartooning job, and many secrets on the Garfield cartoon itself. Belive me, this is the best Garfield book I've come accross in a LONG time! Have to wait a couple of months? Well it's worth the wait.

WONDERFUL - not pretentious or "snobby" in its' writing, perfect for an Arizona gal like me to learn the midwest from the ground up, literally. Again, I have yet to read this one cover to cover, which is definitely on my summer reading list, but I have used it as a handy reference to plants/flowers/shrubs I already have and ones I plan to purchase in the future. I can already see my "black thumb" turning a wee bit green - not to jinx myself, lol. Great for beginners and seasoned gardeners alike - I highly recommend it.

After receiving this book as a gift, I felt obligated to try to turn my brown yard into at least a small spot of color. With the guidance and help from Laara's book, my drab fenceline is now lined with beautiful perennial flowers that are low maintenance and high color bringing joy to my family and the songbirds in the area. I even tried buying and growing a rose plant and this spring intend to plant more. The instructions about planting, mulchign and feeding the roses really made a difference. They were beautiful all summer. The book can even make a brown thumb like mine green.

I recently cameto Southern Iowa and was struggling for what to plant in the Midwestern garden that had been left in a sad state of ruin by the former occupants. With my busy family, I needed something low maintenance but also wanted something really lovely to showcase my old Victorian home. Midwest Gardens is the perfect book- well written, beautiful photographs. I felt just like a good friend was leading me by the hand through my land showing me what to plant. I got the book last fall as a gift and followed all the suggestions. Now that spring is coming, my beautiful daffodils, crocus and other flowers are peeping up to be followed by the other flowers recommended. I was so happy with this book that I've decided to try my hand at vegetable gardens. I received that book, too and now that I have been successful wtih flowers, will try that advice and try to raise some great vegetables. Thank you for such a valuable resources.

This book is a wonderful tool for anyone with a garden. Its a radical new approach to an old concept. We even had fun coloring the illustrations to mach the flowers in our garden. Truly a joy.

Overly basic and poorly organized.......2007-07-15

I am a relative newbie to the study of typography, but still this book is far too basic. I learned a single fact which I had always been curious about - that the letterforms of smaller-point type are different from (not just smaller than) larger-point type in the same face - and that is a pretty elemental thing that most people interested in type are already aware of.
More suprisingly, there are some serious issues with the layout and typography of this book. Some sidebars, which are in small type, are set in yellow. Small yellow print on white paper? Surely a legibility no-no. Also, each page serves as its own mini-essay (and I do mean MINI; on most spreads, only the right-hand page has any text, and even then sometimes only half a page) but lacks a headline, so the reader has no idea what the page is about.
The only useful element in this book is the various type examples, which could easily be found elsewhere.

Good Introduction to Typography.......2007-06-13

I read this book for my first typography class at design school. It does a good job of giving the reader a feeling for different styles and personalities of letterforms. It is also written in a fun style that makes the book entertaining and easy to read for those just entering the design field.

Good type initiation book.......2007-01-02

The first time I saw this book it was in a fellow designer's bookshelf and I thought the title was humorous and very well targeted. Anybody who knows type understand the joke in "anyone who letterspaces blackletter type would steal sheep" and if you haven't heard of the quote nor get the joke then you are probably a type beginner who could use this book.

I don't agree with other reviews stating that the book is too basic and so it serves no purpose. Yes, it is basic, but 170+ pages of good basic introductory material. I would recommend it for student graphic designers, artists and multimedia designers who work with type but are not necessarily drawn to it. This book gives you the basics with a lot of examples and a humoristic approach that should keep you entertained long enough for you to grasp the ideas.

This is not a reference and it doesn't talk about advanced matters, but it will provide a tremendous wealth of knowledge to anybody new to type specifics. Sure one could get the basics from a 7-page pamphlet, but design is about making sense of the ideas and I can't imagine a beginner understanding all these concepts without the help of an array of examples such as the ones contained in this small book.

This is without a doubt the worst reference on typography that I have ever read. It is filled with useless metaphors and examples. I really expected more from the Adobe Press.

5 Quick Truths.......2006-01-24

1. Entertainment, not resource. Provides insight into the uses of type, as well as a brief history of many different typefaces. Robert Bringhurst's "The Elements of Typography" (0881792063) is a better book for those in need of a resource.

2. Aimed at a less experienced audience. Discusses type in relation to emotions, legibility, etc, though not in great depth. It does a great job of showing a beginner how important type is, showing a large number of examples of typefaces, and, possibly, inspiring them to look into the subject more thoroughly.

3. The quote used in the title did not come from the authors, it came from F. Goudy in 1936. Also, most of the fonts mentioned in the book cannot be found in Adobe's font library, some are over 100 years old. The book is not trying to sell you anything.

4. The book itself is a great example of what can be accomplished with type. It also contains many instances of type being used to great effect, while explaining how and why it works so well.

5. As someone interested in type, you could do much worse than this book. However, its simple nature, though complete and well-constructed, whets the appetite more than actually satisfying it.

I have the 1963 edition of this book. It was given to me by a family friend, but it was already "old" when I got it (in 1973). Yhe recipes are good basic recipes for somebody just learning how to cook. I especially liked "Bert's Brioche" and find I refer to that recipe frequently.
There is information on the definition of various food ingredients, such as heavy cream, light creamas well as "instant powdered cream" which I have never heard of or seen. Various leavening agents are defined, as well as various types of flour.

This is quite a find for those of you who like to cook, who might be looking for Grandma's spice cake recipe or perhaps Mom's dinner rolls. I do feel I have to comment that though my copy is 43 years old, the book is well put togehter and I don't have any loose pages falling out. Not quite sure what happened to the other reviewer's book, but this one has stood the test of time better than some of my more recently published cookbooks.

Buy it, you'll like it.

This cookbook is a good sourse for standard recipes, such as fudge or datenut bread or meatloaf, stuff that you figure you should know how to make, but maybe you don't.

I would recommend it as a good basic cookbook, except that the workmanship of the book itself is stunningly inferior.

I was given a copy when I got married. After very little use, the binding fell apart and all the pages fell out. I wrote the publisher in NY, but they never replied. So I threw out the book and bought a second copy. Unfortunately, it promptly disintegrated too. I still have the book -- as a collection of loose pages (not a single page remains in the binding) -- and refer to it when I need a recipe for a "standard" food.

The low rating is not for the content -- which is good, but rather the poor workmanship and the lack of customer service. I expected more from Good Housekeeping.

The All In One Book.......2003-10-17

This book has recipes for everything imaginable. Great freezing and canning recipes as well as proper table setting etiquette for different occasions. This makes a fabulous gift for the person just getting into cooking.
