Great overall guide for first-time visitors!.......2007-07-08
We went to London in January 2007. We bought a few London travel-guide-type books but THIS book was the one we kept turning to during our trip. It was easy to use and comprehensive. The maps of the different parts of the city were an excellent tool. We had never been to London before and with this book we felt a little more like we knew what we were doing! I highly recommend this book!
Map seems incomplete . . . . .......2007-05-29
I was really hoping to use the map included in this book during my stay in London. Unfortunately, the area I was staying (near the Marble Arch) was not included in the map, and therefore, was not as useful as I had hoped.
A must have for tourists, but missing some helpful information.......2007-03-28
We went to London in January 2007. I was so glad we bought this book, as we constantly referred to the maps (in the book and the tear-out pocket map). The lists and descriptions of things to do around London were priceless, as were the suggestions. I relied on the maps of the different parts of the city to find our way around to the lesser known places or when we got a little off course. This was my 3rd time visiting London, so I wanted to see a few things that were off the beaten path and not the typical sites to see. The maps and book helped guide us through all the different parts of the city.
The only thing I wish it had were more hotel reviews and restaurant reviews. Fortunately, with the internet, researching those topics is fairly easy. We had free internet access in the hotel we stayed at in Westminster (the City Inn Westminster, I think it was).
Awesome, a must have..........2007-03-09
This book is very comprehensive, definately a "Must Have" for your First (or any) trip to London. We just got back and could not have seen everything we wanted to, without it. The Suggested Itineraries section is AWESOME. it gives you a 1, 2 or 3 day turn by turn way to walk through the city to make ensure you get to see everything. You can find lots of this information on Frommer's website too for free, but having the book with you is the only way to go.
Great Planning Book.......2006-08-30
This book showed me a great view of what to do and see in London. I have been slowly planning my trip for awhile and this book is the cornerstone to that planning. The only thing I wish though was that they showed more pictures of the things in the book.

Expensive City.......2006-05-03
This book is breezy, chatty, and eager to please. The writers want to be your friend on your visit to London. One restaurant review suggests you avoid the salmon; the description of the Tower of London tour warns you away from the locking-up ceremony, calling it "cheesy." The cheerful tone the writers take is wonderful, but that doesn't excuse the fact that they think the average visitor to London is made of money.
Admittedly, like most crowded cities, London is notorious for its high prices. But if you limit your visit to the highlights in this pocket-sized volume you will be seeing a very expensive city. The authors' idea of an "inexpensive" hotel can run over 95 pounds per night, which to this working-class Anglophile is pretty pricy. And their discussion of shopping focuses heavily on Harrod's and the Carnaby Street revival, not the nieghborhood shops and pubs where you can get a nice shirt and a pint without being singled out as a tourist.
And if you're more interested in culture than in bringing home trophies, the authors aren't speaking your language. Though they touch on highlights like the RSC and the Tate Modern, frankly most of us only needed those pointed out on a map; thorough reviews were superfluous. How about the more esoteric theatres and museums, the small coffee shops where folkies play Welsh murder ballads, the walking tour that takes in the best busking corners? I'd pay good money for a tour guide that included those.
I can't call this guidebook bad. If you have mad money enough to throw around with moderate abandon, this book may well be right up your street. As I've mentioned above, its pointers and reviews are thorough, not to mention affable and organized. But for curious college students, sailors on leave, and the eager working American who manages to swing two weeks off work, this book is way out of your league. Keep browsing for the right volume, because this one ain't it.

This is a good book, with lots of words packaged into a small space. I have run into words that I couldn't find in this book, though. However, if you are a serious student of any language you know that you can never make do with just one dictionary. I typically have about three or four dictionaries per language. Cross-reference your dictionaries to make sure you are getting the nuance you want from the word (I once heard a girl ask for "facil queso!" No, no, no!(Sorry about the Spanish reference in the middle of an Irish review. It's the point that counts, though.)).
This is a good dictionary for having on your shelf full of dictionaries.
Handy Irish Dictionary--NOT a Course in Gaelic.......2003-03-19
Collins Gem Irish Dictionary, editors Séamus Mac Mathúna and Ailbhe O' Corráin is a user friendly, comprehensive up-to-date wordlist of English-Irish to Irish-English. It's a dictionary for looking up words just like the Webster or the Oxford. It does NOT contain any pronunciations of the words in Irish. It does contain abbrevations. The middle section is useful Irish grammar that includes extensive tables of regular and irregular verbs and noun declensions and key English words makes it an invaluable reference tool. The back section contains numbers used in counting and with nouns and time.
If you are learning to speak the Irish Gaelic language, I'd recommended you to try a lesson course with book that has pronunciations and a cassette to follow along. Some tips would be 'Learning Irish' by Micheal O'Siadhail, 'Irish Grammar' by Noel Mogonagle and 'Irish on Your Own' by Eamon O'Donaill. Some of these can help on the basics of learning the language. This compact source is handy to carry around with you if you're traveling. It seems to sell fairly well in Ireland where I got my copy while in Dublin. My other option to learning the language is to take a course well in a creditable school that teaches it. Also check through Eason & Sons in Ireland for Gaelic textbooks. Eason.ie is an excellent source in Irish books.
Collins Irish-English Dictionary.......2002-09-16
Having learned Irish for years, I find this dictionary to be quite a break from the norm, very up-to-date compared to other dictionaries available. Those that are complaining about the lack of pronunciation guidelines should know that there are three distinct dialects in Irish, with distinct pronunciations, and that it would be unfair to single one out to include in this dictionary. However, there is a standardised dialect, shunned by many people, especially native speakers, although it is accepted. If you don't mind using this dialect, then you should have a look for the "Foclóir Póca" published by An Gúm. I don't know the details because the covers are gone from years of use. It is a bit bigger than the typical Collins and has a blue and orange cover.

Although the listings of firearm accessories and manufacturers are as extensive as I could wish them to be, some of the text is garbled and several of the range tests are slightly skewed. This volume is fine for the collector but for those who need the solid data I would recommend Gun Digest.

Wonderful Guide to Perennials!.......2007-09-28
Another winning book by author Mary Irish! I have several of her books, and the style and information within is wonderful. The first part of the book includes designing your landscape, as well as garden prep, the care of perennials and disease/pests. Much of the information relates to plant care in general, so it's a great benefit for any gardener. Add to that the pages upon pages of recommended perennials, with color photos, and it makes for a great reference book for the arid gardener.
Whoa, give this book a chance!!!.......2007-06-05
I feel this book deserves a much higher score for the information it contains about this under-represented area of gardening. I hate to see a book trashed for odd reasons and would like to elaborate on why I value this book.
One reader has a problem with the fact that this book is not for the Four-Corners area. As one who lives in sizzling Phoenix, I can relate to the disappointment of not having books relate to my area. (So few books relate to Phoenix that it's fantastic to find a good one that does.) The description of the book in Amazon and on the cover of the book may not have adequately given away it's low-desert content, but that doesn't make it a bad book. If the book had been flipped through at a book store, the buyer would have known whether the book met their needs. Buying on Amazon is a short-cut. The fact that we are giving up our ability to peruse every page is the down side to the ease of purchase and lower prices we pay.
Another reader didn't like the fact that everyone in their neighborhood had a copy of this book. Sounds like whoever recommended it was being very responsible in urging water conservation and in steering homeowners toward plants that won't die the first season they are planted. The fact that Phoenix nurseries sell plants that won't live here without excessive babying leads many people down the wrong path. Crispy plants are a disappointing phenomenon that plagues gardeners without sufficient knowledge of the locale.
Of all the arguments, the one about the photos being too small is the only one that actually pertains to this book. Yes, the pictures are small. But the book is so good that I'm happy to do a "G00gle Images" search to see what MANY photos of a plant look like before deciding if I want it. To me, detailed information about each plant is of more value than expensive, space-consuming photos. I am a veteran in the publishing business and if the book containing this many plants accompanied by large photos, the expense of the book would be phenomenal.
Buyers, give this book a chance -- and remember G00gle Images for an array of photos that will provide greater knowledge of any plant from ANY book.
A MISTITLED book.......2007-03-30
Ordered this book and was all excited waiting for it to come; figured it was right up my alley.
When it arrived and I looked inside I knew when I saw the map that it was about area like Yuma, Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso. The HOT areas of the Southwest. Well, there's a lot of the Southwest that is high and cold and this book is for the low, hot areas. If you live within site of the Colorado mountains as I do in the Four Corners, this book will be of no use at all. Too bad I was given no hint about that and now have to deal with the hassle of a return and pay for it too!
Should have called it something like "Low Desert Gardening" or something...
Great info, HORRIBLE photos.......2006-05-24
I own several Mary Irish books and find them immensely useful for those of us who garden in the desert southwest. Since I wanted to brighten up my yard with some perennials, I figured this would be a perfect addition to my library. The information about each plant is great, but the photos are often useless - they are so small that it's often impossible to see what the plant looks like, and some are taken from such a distance that even the form is not evident. The perfect book would have a long view of the plant form, with a closeup of the bloom/foilage.
