"More than 85 percent of the virgin forests of the United States have been logged, 90 percent of the tallgrass prairies have been plowed or paved, and 98 percent of the rivers and streams have been dammed, diverted, or developed." This is a good book for anyone interested in the aspects of environmental science related more to the preservation of animals. It presented facts with an informative and optimistic tone, focusing on what can be done to help endangered species as opposed to what wasn't done. It is very easy to read, the style making it accessible those who aren't scholars.

this book was ok at times it talks too much about birds and i dont know about birds but overall it is good it accurately portrayed how we humans effect the environment through habitat destruction, introduction of alien species, and pollution. i had to read this book for a book report for ap environmental science but it was stilll gooood yyeeaahh!1!

In this novel, David Wilcove discusss the relationship of the development of america and wildlife. Each chapter is broken down into sections chronicaling each section of america. From the great plains of the midwest to the hawaiian islands, overdevelopment, overhunting and neglagence all have contributed to the loss of wildlife in america. The fauna of america were so mal protected for so long, ecologists of the last century have pushed for legisation to protect or furry friends. This book is a great read of any aspiring ecologist, The only issue i had with the book is that it put no importance on the value of Technological advances, such as roads, buildings, and pesticides. Overall this is a book that i would recomend to anyone who wanted to know more about the ecological movement in America- GHHS APES

The book is about the loss and recovery of wildlife. It talks about how many species have vanished because of human settlement and all the negative effects we have brought. It has an indepth analysis of several ares of the country such as Yellowstone National Park, oceans, rivers, lakes, beaches, and grasslands. The good thing about this book is that it informs and provides ways in which we are able to help recover wildlife. This book is very detailed. The author uses several examples for each area he explains. It is a very informative book, but it is not a book for the average reader.

With all of the changes that happen Las Vegas EVERY DAY I found that this book was of little help. Several of the places that were listed did not even exsit anymore, and most of the others had changed their specials. If you decide to get this book I recomend doing your own "back-up" homework and call the places to check and see if the specials are still in effect.

The book is excellant. I never knew there were so many places to eat cheap in Las Vegas. It's is really hard to believe. We are taking this book with us and plan on using many of the reccomendations in the book.

"Cheap Eats" not very helpful.......2004-06-07

I've been to Las Vegas many times for business and pleasure. I did not find this book very helpful. While the concept for a 1 to 777 ranking of restaurant values is a good idea, this book has no information about the restaurants or their food. With ranking by price in various categories, you could use it as a cross-reference to the Unofficial Guide or Frommers. But who has the time? Just use one of those 2 books first -- both are good. This book would be useful to a Las Vegas resident, but is of limited value for a visitor. Prices have really gone up this year, so the information is out-of-date by as much as 50 percent.

OK, But Needs More Details.......2003-06-15

I guess I expected more than basically just a book of lists. Some better details, reviews, options, etc. would have made this a better buy in my mind. For example, the buffet listings just say dinner buffet, lunch buffet, etc. I would have liked to have seen examples of what types of items to expect or at least the typical number of items. A buffet with 10 choices is a lot different from one with 35 choices. Also, I wonder how much of the book will be outdated within six months. Still it is kind of fun to read about some of the great dining deals and it is small and easy to take with you on your trip.

This was an interesting book for the VW enthuiast. It showed some VW toys that I forgot existed, and which I found shortly after. Naturally, there is no way to put true value on these type of toys, but the numbers are a good basis for negotiations. All-in-all, a good book for the price.

Putney has put together an impressive amount of factual data on this subject. Her research is comprehensive and well annotated. The extent of her sources provides for a compelling and credible read. The Edge of the Earth.......2007-10-03

An interesting, if brief, guided tour of what has to be one of the most remote tourist destinations on the planet. The Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)are a British Colony in the South Atlantic, a few hundred miles off the South American coast, that are also claimed by Argentina---in 1982 the two countries fought a war over the islands. Points of interest are noted, and an overview of the land, the people (population only 2500, with about 80% living in the capital city of Port Stanley), the history, and the wildlife is provided. Included are about 30 pages on South Georgia, a remarkably picturesque, but largely uninhabited island even further out in the Atlantic. My only complaint was the lack of photographs of the Falkland countryside. It would have been nice to get a feel for the terrain---m.p.

No stone left unturned in this extremely detailed guide.......2006-04-16

I'm a fan of the Lonely Planet (LP) series, both for armchair travel and for actual travel. This is one of the most obscure destinations covered by LP, and has the added distinction of being written by LP founder Tony Wheeler. However, it is a mystery to me why a successful entrepreneur would want to go back to the drudgery of collecting information for this book.

These 200 pages cover the Falklands in infinite detail. Every remote sheep farm that has a room for rent is described in detail, most of which are accessible only by non-scheduled plane. Keep in mind that the Falklands have only 3500 people, and only one place that could be described as a town or village, which means that this guide has a greater pages-per-capita ratio than any other LP guide (except perhaps Antarctica). There is a large emphasis on wildlife, with 17 pages describing varieties of birds. Also, 18 pages are dedicated to the even more remote South Georgia Island (pop. 10), accessible only by ship. As in all LP guides, there is background on the history and economy, excellent maps, and (in these more recent guides) many color photos.

I read through the whole book and it told me about the lizard I am going to get. It told me how much it will be, what to feed it, how big it will be after a juvenile, and it told me what size tank I should put in there.

The book is definitely worth the price if you spend any amount of time working on your garden. Even if you only use a single section (i.e. tomatoes), there are enough easy-to-use ideas to make it worth your time invested. I found it to be a great gift idea.

Wow, I can't believe no one has reviewed this book yet. It's fantastic. It's got all kinds of helpful tips in it which I'd never heard of before. It would make an excellent gift to give even for someone who hasn't shown any evidence of being into gardening.

The role of Cubans in the American Civil War is seldom appreciated. This work is the first to provide a look at the often distinguished services they performed. Although Cubans are recorded in the rosters of both Union and Confederate forces, Cuban ties with the Confederacy were particularly strong, perhaps because Cuban patriots fighting for liberation from Spain tended to identify with the Southern cause. In this work are biographies of three Cubans who served the Confederate army in the War Between the States. Darryl E. Brock offers a detailed portrait of José Agustín Quintero, who served as the South's most effective diplomat. Michael Wendell Stevens writes on Ambrosio José Gonzales, who rose to the rank of colonel and served some of the Confederacy's best-known generals. Finally, Richard Hal provides a sketch of Loreta Janeta Velazquez, a soldier and spy for the Confederacy who infiltrated (as a double agent) the operations of Northern spymaster LaFayette C. Baker.

Cubans in the Confederacy.......2006-08-14

This was a most outstanding book. Cubans have enriched our American history so much. I found the section on Jose Augustin Quintero the most impacting. His genius on diplomacy and negotiating with people in adverse environments with multiple agendas is phenominal. Reading about him enduced me to purchase another book, The Matamoros Trade by Dr. James Daddysman. Unfortunately I didn't purchase it from Amazon.

There is another book on J.A. Quintero by Jorge Marban, but it is in Spanish and I don't believe it has ever been translated into English. Quintero was so impacting to both the Confederacy, later the USA government and also to Cuba and their struggle for independance. His abilities were so important to our country, he, a Confederate Diplomat, was appointed as the Consul to Costa Rica and Belgium in 1868, by Andrew Johnson, while the South was in Reconstruction and all connected with the Confederacy were being punished.

His legacy of service lived on through his two sons, Lamar and Marshall. His dueling pistols were sold in 1960 to aid Cuban refugees in their flight from Castro.

I know this because I am his great great grandson and have the original documents - even the letter assigning him as a Confidential Agent.

A Unique Book.......2004-01-24

This book is a valuable contribution to the historical truth that the Confederacy was much more diverse than is commonly assumed by most people. As the editor of the book states in his introduction "stereotypes continue to exist that the average Southern soldier was a typical Southern 'cracker' and Anglo-Saxon of homogeneous background, but such was not the case." This statement has been proven to be true in other earlier books such as Ella Lonn's classic "Foreigners in the Confederacy" first published in 1940, and reprinted several times since. As Lonn pointed out diversity was particularly apparent in some units from Louisiana, such as the Tenth Louisiana Regiment, where soldiers from 14 countries were represented, including England, Ireland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, etc.
Cubans in the Confederacy concentrates on three Cubans who provided valauble services to the Confederacy. There are three separate articles written by three different writers.
The first article, and the longest in the book (pp. 9-142) is about Jose Agustin Quintero who served the Confederacy as a diplomat in Mexico.
The second article (pp. 143-224) is about Ambrosio Jose Gonzales who served as a high ranking officer in the Confederate Army.
The third article and the shortest (pp. 225-239) is about Loreta Janeta Velazquez who served the Confederacy as a soldier and spy. She is probably the best known of the three persons covered in the book.
The book is an excellent contribution to our knowledge about the diversity that was the Confederacy. The only disappointment for me was that there are no photographs of the persons depicted in the articles. Some of the articles, I thought were a little too windy, and for these two reasons, I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 stars.

Superv book, Just a little over priced.......2002-08-17

Been born in Cuba, I was fascinated with the tittle of this book. You have to understand Cuba's role in the Civil War is not really known in our Cuban circles. The book was a little over priced, but I decided to purchase it. In truth, it was a superv book, both from a Cuban an Civil War perspective. The only reason I did not give this book a 5 star was the price tag that comes along such a skinny book.
