Easily Readable But Lacking Correct Information .......2006-09-15
My wife and me chose this LP guide for our recent trip to Baja Norte. I actually enjoyed Palmerlee's writing style and his side commentaries on the Baja music scene and other topics of interest. However, there were just too many cases of inaccurate information. For example, Palmerlee says a taxi from Ensenada to La Bufadora is about $12 when actually the round trip cost given to us by numerous taxi drivers was $40. He then says (correctly) that you can save money by taking a $1 bus to the town of Maneadora. But from there, he says, you must hitchhike to La Bufadora. The truth is, as we discovered by talking to the locals, you can easily catch another $1 bus from Maneadero to La Bufadora. Thus avoiding the hitchhiking which many people, including my wife, would not want to try.
Another problem was that the hotel recommendations were too often off the the mark. For example, at the highly recommended Hotel Los Pelicanos in Rosarito we were taken to a dark, dreary room by a very unfriendly hotel receptionist. Of course, we chose not to stay there.
I know that prices change and good places go bad. But still this book just had too many inaccuracies for me to recommend it. In fact, my wife started saying we should read what the Lonely Planet guide said and then do the opposite. I think this was probably a bit of an overstatement on her part. But still I'm sure this is the last thing LP wants to hear from it's readers. By the way, Lonely Planet is still my favorite publisher of travel guides. But hopefully the book we purchase for our next trip will provide better information.
compact and user friendly.......2006-07-02
the moon book is like reading a code many times, difficult to obtain the info you desire. the costs of rooms and cafes are in layers, $ $$ $$$ or over $25, $25-50 etc, and you never really know if it costs $25 or $50, same with meals, and it has no easy to find color map, requiring one to search thru the different sections to find a black & white map covering a large area, and then you have to try and find the area of interest.
the lonely planet is about 1/3 as thick, has prices for room and meals in every range, and specific dollar amounts. somehow it was able to jam enormous user needed info into a small space and leave out much of the vague data in the moon book. Easy to carry and a real joy to look thru.
Book Description
Just west of the Mexican mainland and south of the US border lies the Baja Peninsula - land of lovely beaches, remote deserts and crystalline waters. Whether you want to view ancient Indian rock art, surf off Islas de Todos Santos or savor the best margarita in Ensenada, Lonely Planet reveals the best of Baja on and off the tourist track.
- sleepy? where to stay from desert camps to ritzy resorts
- hungry? local cuisine from huevos fritos to lobster burritos
- active? diving, surfing, whale-watching and fishing hot spots
- lost? 38 detailed maps throughout
- no habla español? handy Spanish language and menu translators

as comprehensive as a telephone directory..........2002-10-10
... and with about as much personality and selectivity. Like the Moon guide, a very useful book to have once you find yourself in Town X but not very useful for figuring out whether it would be better to plan a trip to Town X versus Town Y.
Practical and fun.......2001-06-09
Lonely Planet's Baja book is an excellent guide to the peninsula. I especially appreciated the detailed info on how to get around in Baja. The section on health in the front of the book came in handy after a small altercation with a manta ray! It was excellent for travelers on a budget. The descriptions of cities, places to stay and restaurants were all very accurate, but left enough room for our personal tastes to guide us to the spots that seemed especially fitting.
I felt as though once we arrived at our final destination there was a lot more there than was really covered in the book, but I guess they only have so many pages to work with!
This was the only book we brought with us, and it made for a great trip!

The long, beautiful peninsula of Baja California is full of possibility. You can sport fish for marlin, snorkel the Sea of Cortés, surf the primo waves of the Pacific, or explore the sere beauty of the desert. There are intriguing small towns, plush resort villas, secluded beaches, and vibrant tourist-filled nightclubs. There's whale watching and horseback riding, ancient Indian rock art, and a church designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (for whom a Parisian tower, another of his creations, is named), plus scuba diving, hiking, lovely lobster burritos, and eye-popping margaritas. It's all a matter of knowing where to go and how to get around, where to stay and what brand of entertainment best suits you and your budget. Wayne Bernhardson's guide to Baja clearly delineates all the options available. The maps are superb, the information comprehensive--with details, times, phone numbers, and prices for everything from transportation and museums to tourist offices and hotels. You have only to commit to the trip, choose your pleasures, and go. --Stephanie Gold

Not the right guide for baja.......2000-02-02
Disappointing. I have used lp guides in latin america before with a great deal of satisfation and I understand that prices go up and things change. However the guide to Baja was not up to lp's usual quality. I think the research for the update was just not as thorough as it usually is for lp guides. The bus schedules were way off and didn't make sense. In the town of San Quintin there were three bus terminals and five bus companies with widely varying prices and none of that was mentioned in the book. Some ommisions and mistakes are to be expected in a guide book but in this one they occured far too frequently. In short, this guide is rarely valuable for a budget traveler, and if you are headed to Baja (which is by the way a beautiful place) I would look into other potentially more accurate guides.
A really good guide.......1999-01-14
I'm just back from a two week travel in the beautiful BAJA and I have to say that this Lonely Planet guide book is excellent. The good thing about this book is the really good maps of a lot of town. With this book I was able to saw everything i wanted. I really recommand this book to someone who is planning to go on bus, its got all the precise information about bus schedule, bus terminal, etc...... A real good guide !!!!!

The ultimate A to Z guide to contemporary topics one would not expect to find in the Bible!
Customer Reviews:
great reference.......2006-10-06
I am cautious about books that claim to explain the bible. I love this one. I'm not fully educated on the writings, but I like the references given on each subject. The good thing is you can use your bible, but you don't have to. I grab this book when I need some guidance. It hasn't failed me yet. I haven't found a subject or feeling not covered; and all bible versus concerning the subject are identified. I think this will be a book that I will use for years to come.

Book Description
The Indians of ancient Ecuador decorated their clay spindles and beads with brilliantly realized images, many of which were drawn from their everyday lives. This collection includes 282 of these pre-Columbian designs (500-1500 a.d.), among them rich representations of people, mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, plants, heads, geometric designs and more.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent sourcebook.......2003-08-01
This is a very good book, made with the traditional Dover Publication quality found in other books in their series that feature pictorials as diverse in subject matter as Art Noveau and Japanese Designs. As stated in the book, it is a permanent book produced with the quality standards used for the best books including pages bound in signatures that open flat for reference without the pages coming out. This is important since each page has three or four details taken from designs from pre-Columbian Ecuador and if you are copying them you will need the pages open and flat for an extended period of time. The designs are black and white illustrations and range is subject matter from splayed figures, people, many different animals including mammals, birds, reptiles and fish, plants and abstact creations, just to name a few. Each illustration is flat and enlarged showing the detail next to the smaller whorl or bead. The designs are taken from the private collection of the author. The author, Frederick w. Shaffer, used his collection of spindle whorls or weights and decorative beads that date back from 500 to 1500 A.D. In the introduction their is a brief explanation of these onjects and their use and how he aquired them in 1959. Although this is not a historical book per se it does represent the art work of the craftsmen of ancient Ecuador so it does have some historical significance. It is a remarkable collection of designs or motiffs that are valuable for people invloved in the visual arts. As a sourcebook for people in advertising, textiles or woodwork these designs may be used at will, with the permission of the author, to enlarge, reduce, alter, etc. for your convenience. If you are creative these designs can also be a stimulas for your own designs influenced by the ancient artists of Ecuador. Crafts people in jewelry, metalcraft or leather will find these designs very helpful. An interesting feature is the similarities in these designs and other objects collected from vastly different geographical locations in pre-Columbian America. The book is similar to the(2) books of ancient designs of Mexico by Jorge Enciso.

Piggy Potions.......2006-09-12
Any book by Peter Gurney is well invested especially if you love guinea pigs. I wish I would have known about him when we first started getting guinea pigs 6 years ago and I have now set up a guinea pig dept at our local agricultural fair and have my son doing a FFA (Future Farmers of America)prject. We had 33 guinea pigs and are now up to about 50 with the births of new baby's. Peter in his guide to Guinea Pigs saved lives of some of my piggy's where when my youngest son got his first guinea pig then the 2nd his first one died and if I would have had Peter's book then I probably could have saved his life. I have been a piggy mid wife showing as Peter says good husbandtry. I have helped deliver a sows lat 2 baby's out of 5 she was exhausted and I have photo's of several of my sows delivery beginning to end and it is such a beautiful sight. I recommend any of his books to everyone especially when I do educational talks on guinea pigs or displays at our country fair. I have worked in medicine for 25 years so I was not afraid to try things he mentioned in any of his books, but a novice should always have a more trained person help or assist them the first time and finding a vet specialized in guinea pig care is hard. I live in Amish country in Lancaster County, PA and I see so many of the Amish breed their piggy's literally to death or get so many they let them run in the wild and it gets cold here. Like Peter and many other of us piggy lovers stories we hear are heart breaking. We can't save them all, but with Peter's books we can certainly deal with many situations when they arise or buy those precious minutes or hours needed to have a guinea pig live rather than die until you can get it to a specialized vet. Take his advice in everything--it works and piggy's do tell you in their own way what is wrong or that something is wrong and a little examination or routine examinations and his advice and remedies work well. I have used his first book Proper Care of Guinea Pigs so much it is falling apart and I am purchasing another book--his books are like my guinea pig Bibles. Desiree

Kids LOVE it.......2007-02-19
I'm a mom and an elementary teacher, and children love this book! They want to hear it again and again, and chime in on the repetitive sections! They enjoy the silly rhymes and alliteration. We can branch out into discussions of our favorite desserts, or talk about our changing moon - although mostly we talk about our favorites of the incredible illustrations! This is the kind of book your child will want to hear every night at bedtime!

Paul Aden, who has introduced dozens of new hostas into cultivation, wrote six chapters and contributed many photographs to this classic. Other contributors include John Elsley, Yoshimichi Hirose, Graham Stuart Thomas, and André Viette. This was the first contemporary book on hostas and played a role in helping to bring these versatile shade-lovers to their current level of popularity.

How to grow Hosta's.......2006-07-10
This is an excelent book for learning about hosta's and how to care for them. This has been my reference book for years, great book for the new hosta enthusiast or just a great guide to introduce Hosta's into your garden. A wealth of valuable information! Master gardener B. Chauvin
Not for the more advanced.......2005-07-18
The coverage text was broad based and general. Didn't devel into the more complicated issues I was looking for go. But it would be great for a beginner hosta fan.
Useless.......2004-08-20
A very useless book if you are looking for what ails Hosta's and what to do about these problems. If you are having any problems, don't waste your money on this book as I have.
Great Pictures.......2000-04-30
This book excels at having a large number of good pictures of a wide variety of hostas. The text is secondary.
Excellent information and beautifully illustrated!.......1999-07-13
I found this book both informational and wonderfully illustrated with gorgeous colored photographs throughout. Most gardeners should thoroughly enjoy this book which has many garden design ideas as well.

Parents must read.......2003-06-14
A must-read for parents of minority school-aged children, especially in southern states where racism is still rampant and sometimes violently so. This book helps to show how to recognize subtle techniques used by educators--who themselves are in denial about their racism--to sabotage the early education of minority students.
informative true story that every parent should read........1998-08-23
a crucial read for parent of all children in the school system today. This mother's story will prepare a parent or guardian to recognize problems with children that performs well at home and on standardize test while the school faculty indicate the child can't learn. This book shows that sometime you have to go above the teacher's and yes the principal head to get the results you deserve in regard to your child's education.
