Customer Reviews:
Best guide book for interested travellers on a budget.......2007-02-12
Pretty reliable truly budget minded. Lots of info. Very usable.
Its great.......2007-01-16
This book is becoming my best friend. Its so easy to find the information need it. Give you choices, alternative on how to do it, I'm really happy with this buy. I used the Let Go in Spain, they are great little book.
You will find any information about the country what is expensive or on a budget. Also really friendly to use. We love it.
The Best Guidebook For Those On a Tight Budget.......2006-04-14
While, I havnen't used the 2006 edition of this guidebook, back in 2004, this was by far the best guidebook for the backpacker/college student on a very limited budget. I found this book to be superior to LP and Rough Guides. The best aspect of the book are the reviews and listings for places to sleep and eat. The only drawback is that the guide to attractions and such isn't as good as some of the other guides.
I used this book in addition to Rick Steves' Italy book, and highly recommend both. While Rick is great with tips and tricks and unique finds (and occassionally inexpensive restaurants/hotels), he tends to assume his auidence has a little more money than most college students travelling to Europe would have. He also has a better focus on what's worth doing and what's wasting your time.
So in summary, while the LG series is great for the super-budget traveler, it isn't quite complete. For that, go with one of Ricks books. They complement each other quite nicely.
Avoid the tourist trap!.......2006-03-25
This book allowed my friends and I to see [and eat] all the best of Italy on a tight bugdet & with limited time. Thanks to this book we were able to avoid spending $ on sub par food at all the tourist traps that surround the typical tourist destinations in Italy's popular cities and allowed us to find eateries we wouldn't have visited otherwise. This book is a definite must have for anyone visiting Italy who desires an invidividualised and worthwhile experience.

Too Many Factual Errors.......2006-01-16
Campbell does make several good points in this book, but this book is REPLETE with incredibly shoddy factual errors and is so flatly written that at times it sounds like the instructions for assembling an airplane model.
An interesting chapter on Robert Rines's underwater photos and several good points the author makes along the way saved this book from a 1-star rating.
The Loch Ness Monster-The Evidence; A Good Read.......2003-11-14
When I first read this book,I was completely put off by it and seriously thought of returning it.It presents a totally negative view of the problem, and concludes that there is absolutely no postive evidence for the existence of the Loch Ness Monster,or any other lake monster for that matter. Being a strong believer,I was ready to reject this idea.
Later,I realized that when examining the evidence,it is very important to look at both sides of the story. For instance, regardless of my pro-monster status,I now concede that the "Surgeon's Photo" is in fact a hoax,as well as Lachlan Stuart's "3-hump" photo. The famous "gargoyle head" photo snapped by an underwater camera most likely shows an engine block used as an anchor (but the other underwater phots arte still very interesting).
As to the book itself,it is a bit difficult to read-the author refers to the Monster as "N",the loch as "L. Ness",and uses a whole series of abbreviations, which make for some interesting,as well as confusing sentences. He also make many seemingly solid declarations without giving sources, the most common being that a film or photograph (pick one,any one) has "long been rumoured to be a hoax."
Summing up-if you a Monster enthusiast,by all means, read this book, but be prepared for a completely negative view of the whole matter, and remember that it is important to examine all sides of the issue.
What Loch Ness monster?.......2002-12-23
The Loch Ness Monster is a detailed evaluation of every photographically supported sighting of the loch's alleged denizen since 1933. Campbell offers the most plausible explanation of each, and concludes that none survives close inspection. While he lists the ancient mythology that has been retroactively postulated as evidence for Nessie's existence, he finds that it is nothing more than a desperate ploy to reinterpret older fairy tales as early sightings.
If Nessie exists, then its ancestor must have entered Loch Ness at some time in the past, when there was a tunnel from the loch to the open sea. But since Loch Ness is 16 meters above sea level, any tunnel large enough to take Nessie would drain the lake down to sea level. There is no tunnel, and probably never was a tunnel. And for the creature to have survived for centuries, there would have to be a breeding herd of at least twenty individuals. But Loch Ness is too cold to support any cold-blooded species, and also does not have the capacity to feed such a number of large lifeforms.
Campbell shows that all alleged positive results of sonar, radar and photographic imaging, on close inspection, in fact prove to be negative. Not only does the loch not have the capacity to support a herd of monsters. No legitimate evidence exists that it does contain them. And given the thousands of man-hours devoted to loch watching by serious searchers, photographers and tourists, the logical conclusion is that, if Nessie existed, someone would have proven it by now. But the more Loch Ness is watched, the less the alleged monster shows itself.
Campell concludes that there is absolutely no reason why anyone should believe in lake monsters. If anyone doubts that conclusion on the basis of any specific evidentiary claim, the chances are it is one of the dozens of claims that the book examines and demolishes.
Incredibly skeptical case study.......2000-06-17
Being an examination of the evidence (or lack thereof in the author's opinion) for the Loch Ness monster, while interesting, this book falls short on a few points. First off, it's extremely scientific tone makes for dry reading, yet on the other hand seems brief for it's intended purpose of thoroughness. Also, despite making some very good points the author tends to dismiss some evidence for reasons that would require more suspension of reality than would belief in a monster. In one case in particular, Mr. Campbell goes on for some pages discussing a case of evidence and abruptly dismisses it by stating that he came upon "rumors" of a hoax, the details of which he doesn't even go into. All in all, whether you are a believer or not, this book is interesting reading if you can get past the dry anylitical tone of it. However, be prepared to use the evidence presented to form your own opinion rather than buy into the author's emphatic belief that there simply cannot be a monster. Having visited the Loch in person myself, and ironically enough, purchasing this very book at the Loch Ness Monster Exhibit, I find it very difficult to believe that someone could look into it's massive, murky depths and say with 100% certainty that there could not be something lurking below. But that is exactly what Mr. Campbell does with this book.
Brutish Debunking of Loch Ness Enigma.......2000-04-05
As a collector, and reader of books upon the Loch Ness Monster, this book is not one which I would recommend to readers with little or no knowledge of the subject. The author is highly skeptical of the existence of any such creature and debunks all available evidence. This is all well and good, however,in this reviewers opinion, he does on occasions dismiss too much information. Despite these objections, some of the authors criticism of evidence is quite properly and correctly deduced. But be warned, if you are looking for something to arbitarily explain the case facts, then this is not the volume for you. It is though, still a good read and a useful work to own to discover both sides of the argument.

Handy Collection of Alphabets.......2002-10-24
This is a convenient booklet (only 64 pages) of the English alphabet in a few sets of designs available on the companion CD-ROM. I find searching for a appropriate design for use as a drop cap in a document is easier with the booklet than without. Hence I think it is very practical and useful.
However, there might be some of those images that you might want to "re-touch" as they have dots (probably due to the scanning) on them. If the publisher had rectified this, I would have rated this as five-star.

Fine if all you want is pictures........2003-02-13
The amateurish publishing quality is distracting. The pictures are handy, as both sides of the box & thermos are usually shown. But if you want ANY sense of history, facts, or color...anything besides arbitrary price schemes...you should look elsewhere. ...

A Super Lunch Box and Thermos Collectibles Guide Book.......2000-06-01
This 218 page, 5 x 8" softbound book is ideal for taking with you when you shop for these collectibles. It's packed with more than 500 full color, sharp pictures of every type of lunch box and thermos imagineable. Great photos ! There's not too much informative copy included, but there's great depth of coverage. At the back of the book there's an Index, Price Guide, and Inventory section that is very useful. A Must Have for lunch box collectors.
Overwhelming Collection!.......2000-03-11
Believe me, once you start looking at this book, you just can't put it down! I never knew they made so many metal lunchboxes throughout the years. Oh, I had a few when I was a kid in the late 50s and I'll always remember my mom not letting me have the matching optional thermos. She was so afraid I would be careless and drop it, breaking the fragile glass liner. I was a responsible 9 yr old after all. I always envied a kid who had a Roy Rogers dome chuckwagon lunchbox. That was so cool! Even when the lunchbox was empty, somehow it retained the odor of all the peanut butter and jam sandwiches wrapped in wax paper, that I carried in it every day. And the metallic sounds in the cafeteria of all the lunchboxes being opened and after, being latched up again. This book is bound to have the box you had as a kid so I recommend it not only for nostalgic reasons, but as an invaluable source and guide for the lunchbox collector.
Mindblowing Collection! Best Guide Of It's Kind!.......2000-03-10
Even if you don't collect old, vintage lunchboxes (I don't), once you pick up this book, well, you can't put it down. I never realized just how many lunchboxes were produced over the years. Just looking at the boxes reminds me of when I was a kid in the late 50s and my mother would never buy the optional matching Thermos. No, she was afraid I would eventually drop it and break the glass liner. Still, I did have a few metal lunchboxes throughout my early school years. Although I don't recall the litho, I can never forget the smell of peanut butter and jam sandwiches wrapped in wax paper when I opened up my box. I swear the smell permeated the metal giving it a permanent odor! And the sound at lunchtime of all the lunchboxes in the cafeteria being unlatched and flipped opened and later snapped shut. If only I had kept mine. If only!

A decent starting place for those new to the fascinating world of herbs, Herb Gardening for Dummies covers everything from garden design (traditional knots to a simple window box) to proper care, feeding, and usage of these versatile plants. The plant encyclopedia is cleverly written, informative, and gives ideas on how to use these little critters once you've harvested them--the authors are considerably more cautious than herbal guides written by professional naturopaths, which can be a good thing for newcomers to the field. Organic methods of pest control and fertilization are emphasized, as these plants are often grown for human consumption. Choosing the right plants for your growing conditions and interest level is important, and there's lots of helpful advice on these topics.
The downside to this book is its lack of pictures. There are lots of line drawings, but they tend to show particular stages of a process, rather than each step. Color photos are limited to one section, and since the photos are separate from the descriptions, they don't add much value to the book. With bullet-point lists, icons for highlighting categories like "ecofriendly" or "time-saving," and simple tables and charts, how-to photos aren't essential. For folks who learn best with straightforward reading, the presentation won't be an issue, but if pictorial aids are what you need for learning, look elsewhere. --Jill Lightner

Customer Reviews:
Herb Gardening For Dummies.......2000-03-25
"Dummies" is bliss. Having recently purchased a home in the city that had a preexisting herb garden was a wonderful extra. What to do, however, if you know nothing about herbs (the 70's notwithstanding)and even less about gardening?
Along comes Herb Gardening For Dummies. Once I learned that dirt under ones nails can actually be sexy (okay, it's the pasta sauce made with fresh crushed basil from your own garden that really scores)the rest is largely downhill...and surprisingly fun.
Written with the same wit and easy to follow guidelines as other Dummy publications, my only complaint is that the book isn't smudgeproof. Dirt washes off hands and knees but isn't nearly as forgiving on the printed page.
Fun, helpful read even if I don't decide to follow Oliver Douglas to Hooterville.

Book Description
The first part of this volume offers an analysis of the use and distribution of the perfect in the classical period of ancient Greek, based on the complete relevant material in Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides (tragic poetry), Aristophanes (comic poetry), Thucydides, Xenophon's Anabasis (historical prose), Lysias (rhetorical prose) and Xenophon's Opuscula (various prose types). The material is made accessible by several indices. In the second part insights gained in the field of discourse analysis are applied to the description of the contrast between aorist and present verb forms. The author has endeavoured to provide an explicit account of the actual functioning of these verb forms in their contexts. Special care has been given to reducing technical jargon in the interest of those who feel themselves classicists rather than professional linguists.

Book Description
Clovis Semmes extends Afrocentric social theory by formulating the problem of structured inequality for African Americans in terms of cultural hegemony. Cultural Hegemony and African American Development challenges oppositional and segmented analyses that look at Black inequality in terms of either economic dislocation or racial oppression, and introduces the idea that what is at stake are the issues of progressive cultural adaptation, cultural reconstruction, and institutional development. What emerges is a new way of seeing and understanding the intellectual tradition and body of knowledge called Black, African American, or Africana Studies. In chapter 1 Semmes defines the relationship between cultural hegemony and the African American experience and establishes how this relationship creates distinctive and recurring problems for development. The following two chapters analyze the works by sociologists E. Franklin Frazier and Harold Cruse. Chapter 4 explores the role of legitimacy in psychological and social psychological adaptation, and inter- and intra-group relations. In Chapter 5, Semmes analyzes the relationship between the political economy of the mass media and African American aesthetic and artistic production, and argues that the expropriation of African American cultural products is a structural problem contributing to cultural negation. Chapters 6 and 7 examine two important institutional forms: religion and health. Next Semmes looks at the significance of cultural revitalization efforts which reveal the collectively-felt need to transcend destructive hegemony. He concludes with a chapter on factors affecting the production of knowledge in African American studies and the implications for cultural development. Sociologists and scholars in Ethnic and American Studies, as well as African American Studies, will find this study useful.

Semmes probes at the root of racism through cultural hegemon.......2001-12-27
If you are looking for a work that will help you to really see how racism in America exists on multiple levels in today's society, this is the read for you. Semmes defines hegemony then reveals how it has affected so many psychologically. While you will need patience and a dictionary to understand the depth of his words, this is definitely a book worth while. I found it excellent for research on examining cultural issues within America's educational, social and economic systems.
