Wonderful.......2007-07-14
My wife and I love Costa Rica and have a shelf full of books and maps about this great country. We own property there. We visit every chance we get. My wife lived in CR for 7 years (in the 70's) and is fluent in Spanish. That said, we both LOVE this book for both its completeness and its insight.
If you want a super book to guide you to the great spots of CR, then this is it.
The maps aren't good enough for general navigation but this isn't a map book. Just get a copy of the International Travel Maps (ITMP Publishing) and get this book to make your vacation plans.

I have purchased at least a half dozen travel books published by
Moon Publishing and always they are 5 star. I have found the information
in them to be accurate and directions easy to follow. An added bonus is
that some are written with a note of humor which makes the book more pleasurable to read. I recommend them to anyone who is travelling with the suggestion that they read the book before beginning a trip and then
take the book along during the trip. Also, the size of the books are
easy to hold in a plane, train or car and they pack easily into suitcases
or totes.
Moon Costa Rica handbook.......2006-02-18
(4/06) This book divides Costa Rica up into areas, and is very easy to follow and read. I have bought several other Moon handbooks, and have always been quite happy with their accuracy when I've gone on my trip. We won't be going to Costa Rica until June, but I am sure I'll be ready.
(12/06) I traveled to Costa Rica in June, with a group of 32 people that included 15 eighth graders. This book was very helpful, and has since been used by four coworkers who decided to travel there after seeing my pictures. One coworker is buying retirement property there!
Take this book with you........2006-02-08
Very helpful book! It was 1 of 6 books I bought to help me decide whether I wanted to live in Costa Rica for retirement. It was very comprehensive and 1 of my favorites with up to date information.
Other people DON'T have this one........2005-08-21
EVERYONE has LP Costa Rica. In the month I was in Costa Rica I saw only one other person with this book--if you want to know where to stay, avoid the LP places and stay in the tiny places this book rec's.
The prices are a bit out of date because of the book's publication date, but this book is fantastic if you're on ANY budget.

Book Description
The discovery of and excavations at Pompeii in the second half of the eighteenth century not only provided historians with a trove of information about ancient Roman civilization but also fired artists' imaginations and inaugurated the vogue for the "Pompeian style" that so influenced the West
in the nineteenth century.
This book reproduces, along with commentary, Le case i monumenti di Pompeii (1854) of Fausto and Felice Niccolini, the first work to present completely and systematically all the public and private buildings so far excavated in Pompeii. It features the wondrous watercolors the Niccolinis created to
document Pompeii and is thus a beautiful and essential tool in understanding the excavated remains themselves and how the modern archaeologists perceived and recorded the ancient world.
These magnificently reproduced drawings of the excavations are accompanied by texts that explain the documents by the Niccolinis, as well as the evolution of the Pompeian style in Europe, the pictorial representation of Pompeii in the nineteenth century from engravings to photographs, and the
evolving styles of archaeological documentation.

Pot-Bellied Pigs and other miniature pet pigs.......2002-02-18
I received a phone call letting me know of my new arrival.....a Mini Pot-Bellied Pig! I knew NOTHING about the care and keeping of my newfound pet and ordered this book for starters. I received this book from one of Amazon's great used book sellers and immediately began to read. This book is of quality binding with great pictures to illustrate the unique colors and sizes (as well as the different environments in which they can be kept). The pages are thick and high-gloss as well. The cover is sturdy, high-gloss and compact (great to throw in a purse for sharing). The typeface is large and bold for ease of reading. The content is perfect for an overview of EXACTLY what I needed - brief, thorough and to the point. I was able to sit down and absorb the information given in about an hour and a half. I am sure there are many other books which give are more indepth, but this one served it's function - a fast course in the keeping, care, history, Laws, Resources, Products and the choosing of a quality pet pig! For the price, it is a MUST for the beginner!
Pot-Bellied Pigs and Other............2000-08-25
The strengths this book offers different from the other pig books is, a lot of registry information, also many varied photos, and the best boarding tips I've seen. The author has a knowledge of pigs from their US arrival in the 80's. Weaknesses are: the annoying print, the very small training section, and that some conformation ideas have changed, and also having the same girls repeatedly in the photos. Overall it added to my pigly knowledge though, which is what I'm after.
Good starter book, but lacks depth for care.......1998-12-24
This book will provide some basic info for potential potbellied pig owners but is very general in most topics. Print style is annoying to the point that one would think the author needed to fill up more pages by enlarging the font.
A must for the lover of miniatures pigs (or just cute pets).......1998-10-04
The printing is a bit of a disappointment, with a free use of bold underlined caps for no obvious reason. Looking beyond those, however, the book is chock ful of the most adorable pictures of miniature pigs (called by the pros 'Potbellied Pigs', and you can see why). Anybody on the look-out for a cuddly, intelligent pet need look no further! Puppy, eat your heart out - these micro swines will send you all rushing to the nearest pet shop. The text includes many sensible facts about keeping them (apeasing neighbours and municipalities, among other things), feeding them (preferably at the family table, it seems), and even breeding them. To be pigheaded here is a compliment, they appear to be at least as bright as dogs, and can do all sorts of tricks (when they care to). In all, the book is a bargain at the price.

Customer Reviews:
AMAZING PRODUCE!.......2006-08-15
I purchased this book as just another gardening tool, but after reading it, it just made sense, so...I convinced my husband to spend the $$ required for the cinder blocks and we built 3 beds. I got a very late start and planted about 3-4 weeks after I should have, and all I can tell you is that my produce it amazing! It's only mid August and we've had tomatoes, radishes, corn, zucchini, potatoes, lettuce, basil, peppers, cilantro spinach, romaine, etc... My tomatoes are 3-4 inches in diameter and turning red. We used the formula for the soil in the book and the drainage is awesome, we had flood conditions in the beginnning of July here, I didn't have to worry that my plants were sitting in the wet and rotting, they had just enough. We did use a very well composted (almost 2 years) horse manure for the compost. My husband was a doubter and now he's building me 6 more beds this fall for next years garden. I have herniated disks in my back, which is why this was appealing to me at first due to the factor that you can sit on the edge and weed. I spend less than 10 minutes a week weeding though. (A well composted manure will have less weed seeds due to the heat involved in the composting process kills the seeds.) We live in an area that is nothing but rocks and clay. Every year we would put $300-400 in our soil trying to improve it to no avail, I finally gave up. Now, this is the most pleasure I've ever had gardening. Not having to water where you walk is a time saver also and not walking where youve planted makes this concept a true winner!
Cinder block raised garden beds.. cheaper than plastic wood beds.......2006-02-15
I just recieved the book today. It really is great. I was thinking of buying one of those plastic board raised bed kits but those are really expensive. With Lynn's way I can make more units with cinder blocks than I could with just a plastic raised bed.The soil mixture on one part, sand, peat moss, compost is a perfect blend. I am going to take her advice and have the bulk sand and compost delivered to save me even more money. I will have the lumber yard deliver the blocks also.Take her advice and buy the professional weed barrier cloth for under the beds and also the pathways. I am going to use pea gravel for the walkways. I am a disabled lady and I can once again get into my passion for gardening.I also will do this organically, now if I just could raise chickens or a nice Guernsey cow in her raised bed system, I would be self sufficient for food.
Lots of Ideas and a Terrific Starting Point.......2005-02-04
I've been gardening for a number of years but have never tried raised bed gardening. This book has inspired me to not only try raised beds, but to do it with cinder blocks. The authors introduction and logic about using cinder blocks as opposed to other materials makes a lot of sense.
The books reads very easily. I especially like the unit approach and the cost estimates per unit and the yield estimates per unit. Very clever and practical.
I must admit that I skipped through parts of the book. The section on soil and pests didn't interest me because I'm not planning to plant such a diverse number of crops. I plan to plant primarily strawberries (not mentioned in the book).
I would recommend that beginners read this book to get ideas and to get their thought processes working. It's not an expensive book but I believe I got my money's worth with ideas I gleaned from a couple hours of reading and hopefully I won't make as many mistakes on my first time out with cinder block raised beds.
Mike
Good idea but not specific enough.......2004-06-22
I bought this book after a friend told me about it. I skimmed it at her house briefly and then I ordered a book for myself. After reading about it, I was excited. I have never had a garden before and Mrs. GIllespie made it sound so simple. Build a raised bed with cinder blocks, then put in the special soil mixture she recommends and plant. You will have a garden that will produce more than if you just use the natural soil or your area.
Well, I spent over $300 on a five unit garden. I even called the author and talked to her about her "soil mixture". Because when calling around for the different elements for the soil mixture, I had the people at different nursuries tell me they had something better, so I called and asked if I could use what the nurseries already had pre-made. This would have saved me eight hours of mixing the soil which consists of peat moss, sand and compost. Well Mrs. Gillespie said "If you don't do the soil mix, then you might as well throw the whole book out." Thus I decided to go ahead and make my own soil mixture according to her specifications in the book. Not having ever had a garden before I didn't know what I needed and the book wasn't specific enough. The peat moss and sand were easy to get and not worry about, but the compost was a different story. I bought compost, but only realize now that it was not the type of compost she proably uses. The compost I bought was basically mulch from last year that had composted over the winter and the nursery now called compost. But being new to gardening I didn't realize I probably needed manure compost instead. Thus I am 2 1/2 months into my garden and my plants are not producing hardly anything. My husband who planted a garden by hoeing up a portion of our back yard is producing a ton more produce than my raised bed garden with the magic soil mix.
I am very disappointed. I think that the book has a good idea with using cinderblocks for a raised bed, and that her illustrations of how many things can fit into each unit of the garden it good. However, she needed to be more specific on the type of compost and not so adament that the soil mixture is the ultimate. I could have spent a little bit more on a mixture that probably would have been excellent but since she told me on the phone that the soil mix was the point of the whole book I passed it up to try her mixture.
The book does have some good ideas but dependinding on your geographical location, some of what she says may or may not be accurate. Obviously, the soil that I have in my back yard is better than the soil mix in my cinder block garden. So, if you do the soil mixture make sure you get good compost...
Homegrown Book.......2000-11-10
This little book could have used an editor. There are many errors that would not be caught with a spell checker ("...after further thought it makes since." "By its self..." "...each cinder block unit t the beginning..." "a generous wheel barrel..."). "To" is often used for "too." Sentences are garbled ("I keep my garden as simple as possible by running some of the vegetables up on trellises saves a lot of space." "...what kind if fertilizer to put on the garden."). The book's friendly attitude may overcome its obviously amateurish home production. There are difficulties with its content. It contains undocumented hearsay and very little that has not already been written about in more substantial books. Many ideas are untested guesses. The one tidbit of fresh insight was the author's comments on color clues as a key to watering. For a rank beginner who has not read much about gardening, this book may be helpful--even inspiring. Anyone else is advised to stand clear.

Book Description
This book tells the extraordinary story of Peter Caulder, a free African American settler in the Arkansas Territory. After serving as a rifleman in the war of 1812, Caulder established a community of free-born African Americans in northern Arkansas and was largely accepted by his white neighbors until an 1859 expulsion law forced the community to flee the state and settle in Missouri. To document such a man's life, and to determine how he thrived within a slave society and came to join a free black backwoods community, Higgins has skillfully interwoven oft-neglected primary sources--many of which are reproduced here--from around the country; and through the information revealed in these materials a fascinating--and groundbreaking--account of Caulder, his family, and his community has emerged.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting.......2007-06-18
Before reviewing, in the interest of full disclosure, I should say that I am Peter Caulder's great-great-grandson.
This came as something of a shock to me, as I'd been told all my life that I was half Dutch and half Cherokee-Choctaw. Nothing about my features, save for a tan that lasts in some degree all year and a high resistance to sunburn, give much of a clue, and I generally think of myself as half white and half Amerind.
Yes, I'm certain of this; I have fond memories of my grandfather - who also had no immediately obvious african features - Henry Elbert Caulder, who is on the last line of the Caulder geneaology in the book. He had three fingers on one hand, having lost them in a combine accident, and died quite some time ago...early 1990's I believe.
So I have a bias.
That said, I really enjoyed the book. For one thing, it gives an insight into a totally different kind of black man in the early 19th century than we are generally led to believe existed - a free sharecropper who joined the army and served for 14 years, helped establish a small colony of free blacks in north-central Arkansas, helped build Ft. Hood...I am generally of empirical mind, but I didn't find enough lacking in the documentation to detract from the value of the information presented or the way it was presented.
I'll concede that much of it is second-hand and speculation, but the basic facts - that Caulder was a free black man born in South Carolina who joined the US Armed Forces with several other colored men (and family members) in his area as 'seconds,' a fairly common practice at that time (and long before the Tuskeegee Airmen, not to detract from their noble accomplishments!) There's no question that he was well-regarded by his fellow soldiers and superior officers, and he seems to have served well, if not in remarkable enough fashion to earn notable commendations.
Regrettably, he also deserted after 14 years, by all indications to be with a woman he loved and help start the aforementioned colony.
There is also no question that when Arkansas made free blacks illegal, a substantial percentage of the commune, including Caulder, moved to south-central Missouri and put down roots there. He still has descendants living there, including at least one of Henry Elbert Caulder's sisters, I *think*. I'd have to ask my mom.
Beyond my obvious personal interest though, I appreciate this book for exposing me to a new way of thinking about what life was like for black people in the years before the Civil War really started building. There is further indication in the book that Peter's father, Moses, was married to a white woman and they lived as husband and wife. Prior to Moses, there seems to be no information, so I can't say if any of my ancestors were slaves or not, and I hope I can say without offending anyone that I don't much care.
It's a fascinating, well-written story that will give you pause to challenge your own notions about the history of race in America, and I think it's well worth reading, regardless of my personal relation to the book.
I *would* like to thank Billy D. Higgins - with whom I've never spoken, nor has anyone in my family that I know of, he seems to have worked exclusively from publicly available information - for putting this book together, both from the personal point of view and from that of a reader.
A Stranger And a Sojourner: A Stranger to Facts.......2006-04-06
The book lacks any proper documentation, and it is full of speculation, in other words, a work of fiction. Higgins portrays the entire population, of Free Persons of Color in Marion County Arkansas as black, this is not the case, most of these families living on white River during that time frame that Higgins talks about in his book, were indeed Native Americans, some of these Indians were of mixed heritage, but I doubt if there were any full Blacks as Higgins tries to make you believe. If Higgins would have done any real research he would have known that there can be a difference between a Free Black Person and a Free Person of Color, anyone atempting to write a book, that covers the issue of race, should make an attemp to do proper research on the subject, before they put pen to paper .
Anyone wishing to use Higgins book for genealogical research is wasting thier time,it is full of errors in most of the ancestrial lines he quotes, but if you have time to spare and like fiction, you might enjoy it, that is if you can work your way around all of the ifs, maybes and probably so's.
A VALUABLE ADDITION .......2005-02-03
Billy D Higgins presents information in this book that broadens our understanding of US history. He tells the life story of Peter Caulder, a man of color, who grew up in an integrated rural community in Marion County, South Carolina where free black and white yeomen lived and cooperated in apparent harmony. Peter, his father, and several friends were recruited into the local milita unit as substitutes for more affluent neighbors and then into the US Rifle Regiment. These people of color served in an integrated army unit during the War of 1812 and, in Caulder's case, long after.
Caulder remained in the army for fourteen years, spending most of his time at frontier posts in northwestern Arkansas Territory. After leaving the army, he became a landowner and taxpayer in a free black enclave on the White River in Arkansas.
Unfortunately Higgins as created his book out of very limited documentation by padding fact with speculation, repitition, and extraneous information. Peter Caulder, like most of the people around him, was illiterate. The written record of his life is scantily recorded in census counts, army records and reports, sutlers' accounts, tax rolls, and the accounts of the few literate people with whom he came in contact. The book is awash in "may have", "might have", "perhaps", and "probably". The factual material is sufficient for a scholarly article, but not a book.
I still recommend it. In addition to telling Caulder's story, the book describes military life on the southeastern frontier and supplies interesting glimpses of US-Indian interaction in the wake of the Louisiana Purchase. Like NEGRO COWBOYS by Durham & Everett, A STRANGER AND A SOJOURNER compels the reader to rearrange the furniture in his attic of preconceptions.

Book Description
After graduating as the first black from West Point in 1877, Henry O. Flipper was dismissed from the U.S. Army in 1882 following a financial scandal. He went on to enjoy a career as a land surveyor, scholar of mining and land laws, congressional aide, and writer and translator.
Black Frontiersman is Flipper's account of his service with the Tenth U.S. Cavalry in Texas and Oklahoma and the years that followed. Flipper's memoir was first published in 1963 as Negro Frontiersman, edited by Theodore Harris. For this revised edition, Harris has added a new introduction, expanded the endnotes, and added previously unpublished material.
Henry O. Flipper was posthumously vindicated, his discharge changed to honorable, and his body reburied with military honors.
