Review--Panama.......2007-09-09
After retiring a few years ago and living in the Colorado rockies, I'm now ready for a warm climate, and my budget absolutely demands a low cost of living. After reading Choose Panama the Perfect Retirement Haven (second edition), I discovered a country I hadn't even considered. I had no idea Panama was such a find for retirees.
This book is well organized and easy to read. It's full of facts, not just about the nice places to live, but all the other things a retiree needs to know like housing costs, climate, cost of living, medical insurance and medical care. Also, the author walks you through the immigration options offered by the government of Panama. I give it five stars.

Hutchings' "Choose Panama" is a Winner.......2007-08-17
As a resident of Boquete, Panama, for the past four years, I had the pleasure of meeting Bill Hutchings when he was researching his first edition of "Choose Panama." And as a longtime editor, I was impressed with the fact that this is a writer who understands that a book on retiring in another country is quite different from a book on simply traveling in that country.
The second edition of "Choose Panama" is even better than the first. Millions of baby boomers will retire in the coming decades and with the uncertainty of retirement benefits, including Social Security, many will think about retiring overseas. Hutchings points out that Panama deserves serious consideration. Low cost of living, "choose your climate" options, stable government, low crime rate, proximity to the U.S.--all these and more make Panama an excellent choice. Read all the available books. I have found Hutchings' work the best of the lot.
A very entertaining read and retirement planning tool.......2007-05-17
A very entertaining read. The author persuades that Panama is an inviting place to retire -- even on Social Security income alone. He describes the possible retirement addresses: an island off Panama's Caribbean or Pacific coasts, or a mountain village like Bouquete, or a city like Panama City. Homesickness not a problem, with the meetings and potlucks the American expatriate communities afford. And Miami is, after all, only a short flight away.
Recent personal interviews of Americans now living in Panama were valuable, adding authenticity. A couple can rent a small two bedroom house, furnished, with water and gardener included in the rent, for $295.00 a month. Hutchings shares the "inside skinny" on government stability (rated "safe" by Pinkerton Global Protection Agency), neighborhoods to avoid, cultural missteps to avoid, etc. The cover photos hint at Panama's many facets--its lovely shoreline, its pastoral country roads, and its exciting cityscapes. He gives straight talk on cost of living, housing, medical care, and the U.S. dollar as the currency. Panama has never had a hurricane. Panama is not a jungle filled with crocodiles. Hutchings' book reveals Panama, instead, as a very enticing retirement possibility.
Useful Book on a Pleasant Country.......2006-04-21
First a disclaimer, I lived in Panama, went to high school and college in the old Canal Zone. I have nothing but pleasant memories. In part because I left before Noriega came to power. His dictatorship was a horrible period for both countries. This well-written, up to date book points out what so many Zonians knew for generations: Panama is a lovely place to live. It has beaches, hot steamy rain forests, cool valley's, historical sites and even very chilly coffee producing mountains. Its two large major cities at both ends of the canal are very cosmopolitan. They are modern, have good medical facilities, etc. A tourist mecca for sure.
As the book points out, what is new -- since Noriega, is that the government is trying hard to entice foreigners to live there, to work there and most assuredly to retire there. It's a smart move on their part. This book carefully points out the benefits and the pitfalls. It should help those seeking a retirement haven. Nevertheless, visit before you move.
Choose Panama, I liked it!.......2006-03-26
My wife and I are going to retire in Altos del Maria, Panama in the next few years. I bought this book to add to the library and see what the author had to say. It is a great first book or an add-on to a collection. With nearly four years of research and visits to Panama, I found few things I would disagree with and a few new items which I didn't know. The hotel and resturants section is nice although guessing prices is a moving target. At times, the author seems to become a cheerleader and promoter, but, that may be because the subject is truly exciting. I would recommend this purchase to anyone for pre-visit/dreaming of retirement fare. Pay attention to the social and cultural sections; they are right on. And, IN CAPITAL LETTERS, take his advice on getting a lawyer for any official business regarding property purchase or obtaining a Visa.
Book Description
. . . (For All Time) adds an exciting new dimension to writing modern family history that seeks to place our ancestors in a larger framework of family, neighborhood, and history.
- Library Journal
Family history writing can take many forms--a short essay or narrative introduction to a collection of family letters, long captions comprising a family photo history, a biography of parents and a narrative of their life together, an autobiography, or even a family newsletter. This sensible and accessible book is for those who want to do a little writing as well as for those who want to do a lot.
Kempthorne shows how easy it is to write family history and how much fun it can be. He illustrates in detail how to:
write narratives and dialogue
use physical details in a scene to make it come alive
create suspense
use many other techniques frequently employed by historians and novelists.
By the end of the book, readers will not only gain a thorough understanding of how to write family history, but will have completed a number of sketches to entertain and enrich their families.

FOR ALL TIME: A Complete Guide to Writing Your Family History By Charley Kempthorne
To be honest, every night I fall asleep reading the books and magazines sent to me for review in my Tuesday column. Its not that they are boring, it is just sometimes late when I finally get to that part of my day! But when I got through the stack to this packet of materials, I became so excited over the content, that I actually got up and e-mailed the author within the hour! I just had to let him know how much I like his work. Who is this person, and what did he write that kept me awake nights?!! Met Charley Kempthorne, editor of LifeStory Magazine, author of For All Time.
This man is a pusher, a puller and an enticer of writers-who-don't-know-they-are-yet. Charley's gift is that he can talk just about anybody into opening up and writing down even a few episodes of a personal history. I'm quite sure that at his LifeStory writing workshops, he will sing and dance, stand on his head, smile that certain smile, pat a shoulder, and draw faces on the blackboard -- ANYTHING to unlock the spirit that is in you! His main tools are humor and encouragement which he uses to tickle your fancy and those memories right onto the page.
Unlike our overbearing high school grammar teachers, and "hypercritical and hyperlearned" college professors, Charley is accepting and encouraging any form of writing you set your mind to do. He's even given in and decided to like poetry! (Read his magazine, you'll get the gist of THAT story!) Charley says: "In our culture much is made of the virtue of excellence. If a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing well. This might go right under the eagle along with our national motto of E. pluribus unum. Well, fine. But the downside of the excellence cult is we are a nation of spectators.
We watch Michael Jordan dunk 'em, we watch Sam Donaldson and George Will duke it out verbally. We watch any number of professionals go to it in any number of occupations, sports, pasttimes, and other activities....and then we decide that since we can never be that good, we can only watch. Maybe we'll try it "later."
In this issue are a number of suggestions about how to write some parts of your history quickly and easily and... pleasantly. SO please go to it. Today. And if you just sit down and scribble it down without much worry about anything but being yourself, you may well be surprised how excellent a person -- and storyteller -- you are!"
Don't get me wrong, this guy also has the credentials to give you practical and worthwhile writing advice. His resume fills an entire web page! Charley is a former college professor, farmer, adult educator, and contractor. Since 1991 he has edited and published LifeStory Magazine ("The Family History Writer's Workshop") and conducted workshops in writing family history in more than a dozen states. He holds an MFA in narrative (fiction) writing from the famed Writer's Workshop of the University of Iowa. In 1977 he founded the first reminiscence workshop in the nation in Manhattan, Kansas.
One of his workshop attendees, Jessie Lee Brown Foveaux, was reported in the Wall Street Journal with the headline "The Hottest Prospect in Publishing Worlds is about to Turn 98: Mrs. Foveaux Wrote a Memoir Nearly Two decades Ago: Now the Bidding Begins" (See: The Wall Street Journal, Friday, March 14, 1997, page 1.) You know where the bidding stopped? Somewhere just over a million dollars! The Bridges of Madison County have just met their match!
While any book title including the words "the COMPLETE" can raise eyebrows and questions, I can state unequivocally that this book is literally all you need to get going! Remember, I am the one who buys two or three books like Strategies for Writing Successful Essays, The Elements of Style, and other difficult titles such as the Writer's Handbook and studies them over Christmas vacation each year. But let's take a step back and take a different look at things. Quit worrying! YES, document your family history, and be precise. But START WRITING that PERSONAL history now! Charley's advice will get you on task, and loving it! Charley has the knack.
Adding our personal insights give an element of genuine caring for our descendants to an otherwise sterile compiled genealogy. This is the week you are going to take the plunge and begin writing your personal history! With Charley's help YOU CAN DO IT!
For All Time : A Complete Guide to Writing Your Family History By Charley Kempthorne
This book is a treasure........1998-07-23
What an encouraging, useful read! This short book is chock-full of little gems on writing your family story -- in whatever form! The author has a delightful knack for giving you permission to be authentic in your writing, while at the same time giving you permission to write "just a little." This book has been such a help to me. I refer to it over and over again.
Wow! I'm writing stuff worth reading now.
.......1998-03-18
Starting with easy suggestions from each chapter I was nudged into making lists, writing a short piece about a memory, writing in a more natural voice. I was freed from seeing family history as a huge chronological undertaking.
It's rare that I check out a book from the library, then have to buy it for myself, but that's what I'm doing here at Amazon today. This book wasn't available from any of my local bookstores.

Customer Reviews:
The Knucklehead History.......2001-05-12
A historical tale (from the factory workmans' point of view) explaining the deco-design of the first 61 cu.in. Knucklehead motor. If you own an original, or you're building a V-Twin (Tedd Cycle,Inc.) Replica Knuckle, you appreciate this book for stoke. A chronicle of club-life in Wisconsin, before the 2nd World War, there are family names repeated in this text (i.e; Kokesh; Knuth; Deckert; Ulicki; Beguhl; and Matheus) connected with Harley-Davidson, that you still hear about today. An insight as to the working conditions at the factory (in the best of times) can be read in this excerpt: "The founders had divided their responsibilities early and stuck with them. They demanded top quality work and usually got it. They desired to build things correctly - they only accepted what they knew was right. For that reason, there weren't many surprises around Harley-Davidson. The atmosphere was predictable, calm, and relaxed. So many guys had worked there all of their lives, that some referred to the company as the "Old Soldiers' Home". It was the last place you'd expect a crisis... -
If you were known around the factory, like Frank Matheus was, they didn't care much where you went or what you saw. That's how Frank saw the prototype Sixty-one Overhead two years before the rest of the world".
As this book illustrates, Wisconsin had their own scene. They didn't need California. This is a darn-good read and once you start building a machine, a re-reader.

A review of H-D 1930-1941.......2001-01-10
The book gives a refreshing view of incredible machines and what they were truly designed for. The author describes, in depth, how the machines were used for everything from the sublime to the rediculous on a daily basis. He walks the reader into a time that is long gone, dwells there with him (or her) in the legendary Visitors' Room, then races the reader onward to the swamps and backlands that earned the cycles' reputation. He illudes to a peaceful, contented feeling that can only be shared, alone, on a quiet hidden roadway that only the rider knows exists. He shows just how a cycle was meant to be ridden by the men who refined the machine, not the men who designed it. I can't say enough about this book. NOTE: If you believe that a motorcycle is a work of art and should be kept spotless and under glass, don't purchase this book. You'll be sorely disappointed.

Olden ways in olden days.......1999-12-17
Historical account of the men and machines of yesteryear. This book is not layed out as a technical or motorcycle repair manual. It's straight forward and addresses the evolution of the Harley Davidson flathead design from it's inception to the end of production. Chronologically laid out it glides you through the changes in attitude and design. A must read for the true enthisiust. A fine job by the author of keeping the subject readable and understandable.
great human perspective........1999-10-13
This books first hand accounts of this pivotal era of harley davidson history make it a must read for any harley nostagia buff. The photos alone are worth the purchase price. Mr Wagner has done a fine job of bringing a bygone era to life.I have enjoyed this volume many times.
Book Description
"Take borage for courage. Send a bouquet of yarrow to declare war. Hang a sprig of rue at the door to keep witches at bay." Like flowers, herbs are steeped in myth and magic, secrets and lore. For centuries, their powers have been called upon to seduce lovers and dispel witches, send hidden messages and brew potent elixirs, entice the palate and soothe the mind. Illustrated with enchanting collages by acclaimed artist Ann Field, this delightful tribute to the meaning and magic of herbs offers a contemporary introduction to an age-old tradition. The text draws on botanical, mythological, and historical sources worldwide, from ancient Rome to Victorian England, from Asia to the Americas, presenting profiles of over 50 herbs favored through the ages. Blending fact, folktale, natural history, and original art, The Meaning of Herbs explores the language and lore of nature's most versatile and powerful gifts.

Nice little gift...........2001-05-24
Who doesn't like herbs? THE MEANING OF HERBS is not at all about actually growing herbs. So, if your looking for a gardening book try THE COMPLETE BOOK OF HERBS by Lesley Bremness or RODALE'S ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS.
THE MEANING OF HERBS is filled with fun factoids and trivial tales that may or may not be true. For example, "Early herbalists prescribed oregano to those who 'are given to too much sighing' and enraged bears were believed to calm themselves by chewing on oregano bushes." This may be, but knowing where bears come from and the origin of oregano, I suspect the bears in question discovered the oregano cure quite by accident in someone's cultivated herb patch (probably right over there in the Great Smokies). And of course, some human must have been around to observe and record the enraged bear as he became becalmed by chewing oregano leaves. (Wonder what enraged him to begin with? Could it be he got into the gardener's bee hive and tried to eat oregano flower honey?).
THE MEANING OF HERBS will make a nice party favor, thank-you gift, or a small present for a friend. Filled with somewhat amusing and interesting anectdotes about herbs (and bears) as well as lots of pretty drawings, it's sure to send a warm and positive message.
