This guide misses some of the most interesting places to stay and completely skips the best restaurants, I think. Also, I wanted to know how to get to the ferry for Isla Mujeres from Puerto Morelos. There is only transportation information from the tourist area in Cancun or the airport.

Terrific Resource.......2007-05-31
I love teaching with this book. I've used it for five semesters, and have never repeated a course. Each one of the selections can inspire six weeks of discussion, the issues are so complex and provocative. Nevertheless, there is a handful of work I would drop in the next edition, for example, the Reality T.V. essay is not well organized; even though the subject remains relevant, this is not the essay with which to open the exploration. There are also some photos which haven't awoken any interesting conversations. (Whereas the Sally Mann group has been a source of eternal delight and debate.) I'm ready for a new edition, but Mr.Atwan is the author-editor I'll stick with. (Check out his America Now, also from Bedford St. Martins. This is the editor's eye you want trained on your classroom.)

I used this book for an English 101 class during my freshman year of college. This book inspired a composition class that I enjoyed thoroughly. Never had I had so much fun writing and analyzing before in a class. I would strongly recommend this text for any teachers/professors searching. Students love the non-traditional topics, diverse contributors, and unique voice this book provides to the class.

I truly regret not ordering this text for my composition courses this semester but I definitely will teach it next semester. I have been reading through it and I find that it is carefully structured. The themes focused on are fascinating. I can well see how students would become drawn to this text. There are a wealth of essays, short stories, commentaries, and images here: the images are just a wonder, ranging many different subjects. The images are followed by questions designed to provoke deep thought. What a way to encourage class discussion and encourage students to stop and carefully examine what they see! I congratulate the author for a superb job.

I read this book knowing very little about the breed. We recently adopted an older chocolate lab, and needed information on how to care for her. This book was just the ticket! I recommend this book for general info about the breed, or for specific info on caring for your lab.

Even though the item description clearly states 112 pages, I apparently didn't read it closely enough & was very surprised when this "booklet" arrived!
Perhaps the information contained in this small booklet is difficult to find elsewhere, but unless you are specifically a children's nursery rhymes series collector, this book is a waste of money! Had I seen it in a bookstore, I would have passed it by unless it had been on sale for $5-$7 MAX.
If you do collect primarily nursery rhyme Royal Doulton, it "might" be worth the investment, assuming you're having difficulty finding the info in more comprehensive volumes. That is not the case for me, so I was very disappointed!
Royal Doulton Series Ware (Vol 1).......2001-11-20
Being new to the world of Royal Doulton, I am so pleased to have found this series in the Central Library in Wellington, New Zealand. However I was unable to purchase in this country and after some attempts in the UK, went exploring on the internet. I am now the proud owner of the 3 of the volumes - albeit missing Volume II (Vol.2).
Being a new collector of Doulton ware, I didn't want endless information about the product(s), just enough to have a good understanding of dates, times, periods, production,design and marks. All of this is available in these easy to read, easy to handle books. I am really thrilled with them and know that I will enjoy them for life.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I sincerely hope that you enjoy this series as much I do.

Royal Doulton Series Ware Vol. 4.......2001-05-26
If you want to collect Royal Doulton series ware, I consider all four volumes in this series a "must have." I like this book because of the detailed photos -- the author goes way beyond just giving you a taste of Royal Doulton. If you only have one or two pieces of series ware, this book will help you identify them and let you see the whole spectrum of items that would complete your collection. While a terrific reference, this book is not a price guide and no prices are included. The only thing I wish this book had was more color photos. The china is so beautiful it deserves more color. That is the only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars. Louise Irvine really knows her Royal Doulton - this book looks like a labor of love to me.

The Cape Region, at the southern tip of Africa, is easily among the richest centers for bulbous plants and probably the most famous. Nearly 1200 species of bulbous plants find their home there and almost three-quarters of them occur nowhere else. This first complete account of all the bulbous plants of the Cape Floral Region is an essential aid to the identification of all species presently in cultivation as well as the many others that are potentially valuable horticultural subjects. An excellent reference book on cape bulbs. A wealth of photo's and information. Aspects of the book are on the technical side for a layman. But worth having.Highly recomended.
A magnificent guide to a magnificent group of plants.......2003-07-24
The flora of South Africa is a stunning example of bio-diversity in the world. Due to a large variety of habitats many plant families have developed a wide range of species, a lot of them endemic to this region. While botanical enthusiasts worldwide focus on succulent and caudiciform plants the unbelievably rich geophytic flora of the Cape (including the orchids) is not fully discovered for cultivation yet.
The Color Encylopedia of Cape Bulbs is a wonderful approach to overcome this situation. The authors present essential information about everything concerning this topic. Their book provides a general survey of the physical and biological features of the habitats. The topics cultivation and gardening are included as well. The information given is concise and precise and a very helpful background for botanists and cultivators, too. A glossary, a key to the species, a table of synonyms and a suppliers list at the end of the book finish the bulk of basic information.
The encyclopedic part of the book offers detailed descriptions of a wide range of bulbous plants of different monocot families. It is built up following an alphabetical order of the genera which allows to quickly find a species without expert knowledge about botanical taxonomy. Specified information about habitat and cultivation is given in the genus description.The species descriptions include all necessary items and are accompanied by wonderful photographs of many of these impressingly beautiful plants. It is astonishing to see what a variety of different looking species some genera have produced, for instance Gladiolus and Moraea from the Iridaceae family.
In summary, I highly recommend this book for botanists, for travellers to the Cape region with botanical interests and for gardeners as well. When I opened the encyclopedia for the first time I was fascinated for hours. The species descriptions and pictures alone are worth the prize of this book, in my opinion! Along with Karsten Wodrich's books about the South African orchids, the Encyclopedia of Cape Bulbs gives an impression of the geophytic plant treasures this region offers to all enthusiasts. And, last but not least, these books are an indispensable help to successfully cultivate them.

A massive achievement of Israel was its success in absorbing, and largely integrating, inflows of Jews from vastly different cultural backgrounds. This book discusses one such migration, of Jews from agricultural communities in Tunisia. Schely-Newman focuses on the women who made this transition. While Jewish societies in Muslim countries did not have the same degree of purdah for their women as did their Muslim neighbours, over the centuries, such attitudes had their impact.
So these Jewish women tended to have secluded lifestyles. The change in moving to a predominantly secular and industrial society must have been severe for some, even if they moved to rural Israel. The author explores in case studies how several women coped and modified their traditions in their new homeland.
The descriptions here are broader than just for Jews. Indeed, in countries like Saudi Arabia, which industrialised in one generation, and Turkey and Indonesia, which are still doing so, there was large internal migration. One can see interesting parallels in the Muslim experiences with modernisation.
