    Book Description

With its genius for art and culture, there is no country in the world as wonderfully civilized (and civilizing) as Italy. But seething below this surface is a long and shadowy history of corruption, cruelty, and the generally bizarre. For centuries it has been overrun by waves of invaders, all contributing their own questionable bits of culture, and all wantonly adding to the confusion. So, how is a poor visitor supposed to make sense of this anarchic place? Co-creator of the cult favorite Paris Out of Hand, Barbara Hodgson has neatly brushed away the chaos and assembled an eclectic treasury of forgotten and overlooked oddities: long-lost popes, bloodthirsty mercenaries, tempestuous artists, and inexplicable follies. Italy Out of Hand is not a traditional guidebook, with hotel addresses and hours of operation. Rather, it is an idiosyncratic tour of a country that is too overwhelming and extravagant for most of us to comprehend without a little guidance. Illustrated with an equally eclectic selection of photographs, portraits, and art, Italy Out of Hand is the perfect companion for those who like their truths to be stranger than fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Just a great little book..........2007-07-13

This book caught my eye because it looks old and very Italian. I bought it for my husband's birthday and he loved it. In turn, he bought the book for his nephew. This book is part travelog, part nostalgia - just a book to treasure. Whether you're Italian or not, the feel of the book will make you wish more modern day authors would format their books with originality and flair. Today, a book is a book is a book. Hooray for this author!

3 out of 5 stars Different, but ultimately not all that great.......2007-05-28

I love reading guidebooks - to Italy in particular, and bought this book in part because, quite frankly, I couldn't quite figure out what this book was exactly from the description on Amazon and the previous reviews.

"Italy Out of Hand" is a small, nicely and heavily bound book, reminiscent in its physical attributes of a Folio Society Edition. It would make a nice gift for any Bibliophile interested in Italy.

It is not a guidebook that most people will want to take to Italy with them. For one thing, given its size, it's simply too heavy and unfortunately literally not worth its weight in useful information. It will look nice in your bookshelf at home but not something you want to lug around in your suitcase.

Most of the information, such as it is, can be found in more detail and more lucid prose in the latest edition of "Frommer's Italy." There's very little here that experienced visitors to Italy will find new, and what is "new" is often pointless and lacks interesting detail: "So-and-so was the notorious son of the famous so-and-so who traveled to Egypt with So-and-so who became the Duchess of Orsino" or something like that.

The book particularly lacks information pertinent to Italy today. I got the impression that the author relied heavily on 19th-century travel guides and the novels of Stendhal for information. For a book about Italy, there is very little information about food, and hardly anything about life outside of the major cities.

I LOVE the whole concept of this book. It is well designed & easy to follow. Will take to Rome this fall!

    5 out of 5 stars Really a fun book.......2007-01-16

Fun book about places we've visited over many years of trips to Italy. Somehow, we missed many very interesting historical details.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Youth Ministry Books Written.......2006-11-10

Mark DeVries insight into youth ministry is exactly what needs to be heard and then put into practice. This book is a must-read by anyone involved in youth ministry and considering being involved in youth ministry. This book should open eyes in regards to the Church's responsibilty to our youth and their families!

5 out of 5 stars Family Based Youth Ministry - A must for all Youth Minsters.......2001-10-31

This book is a wonderful companion for all who are involved in youth ministry. It focuses on the importance of relationships in the success of the ministry. It doesn't mislead by asserting that all the answers are on the pages of this book. You will be challenged to move your ministry into a more lasting phase in which the adults of the congregation become integral parts of the foundation of the teens.

All youth ministers, youth deacons, and youth volunteers should own a copy of this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A different perspective.......2000-06-20

I'm coming from a different perspective than most of you who read this book. I'm a 20 year old Gordon College student who is learning about youth ministry from his friends and from classes. I never really felt connected to any of the youth groups I belonged to, and consequently I understand why now.

I read this book to make up for an incomplete. I had to read this book and Doug Fields Purpose Driven Youth Ministry as well as doing a lot of field research. It was alot like finding a diamond in the rough. I've learned alot about Youth Ministry from this assignment and consequently I can see what DeVries is talking about in this book.

I would say that this book is one of the most definitive books on where Youth Ministry should be heading. The approach is "radical", from our perspective, but is in fact traditional. He is essentially advocating that we give children of my generation one of the main things we have lost in this hedonistic and pluralistic society: A deep connection with adults.

My parents and I get along better than most people these days, but they weren't the greatest advocates of church involement. I had a strong relationship growing up, but what I didn't have was a strong connection with other adult Christians. There was no "cloud of witnesses" to encourage me and challenge me to continue forward. Consequently, I have found it difficult at times to continue forward in my faith. DeVries' concept would change that.

The focus of the book is to show youth workers that the method they have been using needs updating. A new process for quantifying success in a youth ministry also needs to be used. A youth group shouldn't be judged by how many people are in it, but rather by how many people stay in the church once they "graduate" from youth group.

All in all this book is wonderful. I suggest it to everybody who has to work with youth.

5 out of 5 stars My all-time favorite book on youth ministry.......2000-04-22

I have written and edited Christian education curriculum for teens for more than 25 years, I've edited a Christian magazine for youth for 9 years, I've edited a journal for youth workers for 8 years, and edited youth ministry books. I majored in Christian education with an emphasis on youth ministry. So I've seen quite a bit of what's out there on this subject.

Far and away, this is my favorite book on youth ministry. In my present role as a church consultant, this is the only book on youth ministry I give to the youth pastors at the churches where I am consulting.

But a lot of people in youth ministry won't share my opinion. Why? Because this book advocates a basic approach to youth ministry that is so different from what we're used to that most youth pastors are not comfortable with it. A pastor recently told me that they interviewed several candidates for a family-based youth ministry position. None of the youth ministry candidates they interviewed had any clue about how to do family-based youth ministry, so they didn't hire any of them.

Here's the heart of this book. The purpose of youth ministry is to produce adult disciples. What predicts whether a teen will ten years later be an adult disciple? It's not youth group attendance. It's not attending the teen Sunday school class. So, what is it? Give up? It is the quality of the teen's relationship with one or more mature Christian adults.

Kids who just plug into youth group but don't develop close friendships with mature Christian adults are not likely to be in church ten years later. Building a youth ministry around teen-adult relationships--including both parents and others--sounds revolutionary to us. Chances are it would have sounded just normal to the New Testament church. If you care about teens, and if you dare to open yourself to a radically different way of structuring the church's ministry to and with them, you need this book.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars 8 Paw Salute!!!.......2006-01-03

My cats persuaded me to write this review, after I read this fine fine book to them. They admit that yes, they ARE "vain, decadant and self absorbed with few redeeming qualities, and many quirks", and they are quite happy to reside in this mode. One likes to lie flat on her belly and chew on my exercise bench when she is not sitting spellbound, listening to my female country music singer CD's. The other, a long haired foundling, likes to fill the hallways with her self-pitying wails. I have sometimes found my keys and my charge cards under their food mats..... They do delight in their personal perversions. And then again, am I, their human, considered by them to be any less bizarre?

Anyway, they allowed me to read this book to them, and after the last page, they stopped what they were doing long enough to lie on their backs and wiggle their paws in the air, giving this book an unprecedented 8 Paw Salute. Then they went back to their usual routines.

They insisted that they have KNOWN some of the book's characters personally, and tell me that BEK did a fine job -- for a human, that is -- in portraying the many twisted and not-so-twisted personalites of these feline individuals. They also want to know how much these cats were paid to be interviewed.

Was their enjoyment of this book a one-time phenomenon? I doubt it -- As I started to re-shelve this wonderful little book the other night, one of my cats, who lay fully stretched out on my side of the bed said in her breathy catnip-tinged voice "Read it again, Sam." I was so shocked when I heard her say that -- now, I want to know who this Sam is......

Buy this book, even if you DON'T have any cats to read it to. Buy it for your friends, even if THEY don't have any cats to read it to.

      2 out of 5 stars A flawed perspective.......2004-01-31

I think the author has a flawed perspective with cats. While some of the entries in this collection were slightly amusing, most portray kitties as vain, decadant and self absorbed, with few redeeming qualities. This was not the fun read I had hoped it would be.

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliance Personified.......2002-09-19

This book is a literary masterpiece. If I could have one wish, it would be to meet Bruce Eric Kaplan and shake his hand. He has taken the art of animals "speaking" and really made them say "something." A lot of times I'll look at my cat and think she's trying to tell me stuff, like that she loves me or that it's time to change her litter. (But I can't understand her, because she's a cat.) Bruce, however, has used these piercingly perceptive creatures to voice the inner truths, anxieties, neuroses and longings of all cognitive creatures - great and small. Delightful!

5 out of 5 stars Loving it - meaning it!.......2002-09-19

This is my new favorite book...it really is. BEK is a genius...he might just be my favorite part of the New Yorker. I actually don't like cats, but I loved it -- it's hysterical for cat lovers and haters. His sublime and witty observations are brilliant. Is this guy straight? Single? Sign me up!!

5 out of 5 stars a great treat for insiders.......2002-08-22

This is a great book for people who truly love cats -- in other words, it's a series of marvelous sketches that reveal the rich, interior lives that these intelligent creatures may possibly have ... no, it's not for children, but for adults who like their humor with a touch of wry, this is grand fun.

You'll find it hard to tear yourself away from the gorgeous world tour of garden photos of this colorful book. More inspiration than practical guide, there's plenty to admire no matter what your style preference. Choose from among stately formal gardens, shady riverbanks, tidy herb beds, or complex succulent showcases, all presented with stunning depth of color on pleasingly glossy paper. Each photo has accompanying suggestions and design hints from the gardeners responsible for such glory. The text is scant, but what there is makes for interesting reading.

Design histories, the practical needs for each environment that resulted in creative and stunning plant choices, important elements of each type of design--these are all included as the sidelines to the incredible pictures. In the section entitled "Bringing It Home," the text expands to practical tips to help you duplicate the looks you've admired on previous pages--each style is covered in slightly greater depth, but the focus is on design, rather than plant care or environmental suitability. The perfect book to pore over on a cold and rainy day, The World of Garden Design is fabulous fodder for brainstorming sessions in developing fresh ideas for your own gardens. For those lucky enough to travel the world seeing various gardens in person, this book will give you ideas for new places to visit, or lovely reminders of the places you've been. --Jill Lightner

3 out of 5 stars Very beautiful book........2001-01-27

This book is very beautifully put together. The pictures are bright and clear. The writings are interesting. Very helpful to to give you ideas for your own garden.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos from around the world.......2000-06-13

This wonderful book takes you on a tour of some of the world's most beautiful gardens and shows you how to bring ideas from them home to your own space. It is divided into geographic areas including Italy, Britain, France, Japan and the tropics. In each section the unique style and methods of the area are explored in detail with page after page of vibrant color photos.

The adaptation of the garden ideas to the American scene is presented in the "Bringing it Home" section that is part of each regional overview. Here we see how the classical principles of each world region have been applied to a number of noteworthy American gardens. There is also a more in depth look at one special garden, including a complete garden plan in the "Garden Tour" part of each "Bringing it Home" section.

I like the organization of this book, the history, and the personal touch of the many gardeners and designers that it provides. The book is of excellent quality with outstanding photography. I recommend it to anyone interested in an overview of the fine gardens of the world or in finding exciting ideas for their own garden.

5 out of 5 stars Global Gardening Inspirations.......2000-03-28

Take a meadow's worth of gorgeous photos, throw in more than a potful of great gardening tips, and finish with an abundance of historic and artistic context and you get "World of Garden Design," from the creators of Garden Design Magazine. Enticing images and stellar ideas notwithstanding, I most valued the latter component. Through a thorough tour of history's major gardening styles-- including Italian, English, French, Caribbean and Asian-- and an examination of their signature elements, "World" nicely gathers a number of my passions-- art, design, gardens, history-- into one bountiful eyeful and one great read. Its focus on design, though, is what stands out-- a refreshing antidote to the dozens of gardening books that emphasize the practical at the expense of the magical.

      4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but...?.......2000-03-27

I am a recent subscriber to the magazine, so I was drawn to the book by it's truly AMAZING photos. The garden definitions at the beginning of each section were a nice addition, too. I do wish, however, it had just a BIT more content. It is inspiring to leaf through, and dream!
