No tours in the Midwest and central plains.......2006-05-20
The only tours in the book close to the central US are in Colorado and Texas. There could have been less concentration of tours along the east and west coasts. Buy this book if you ride on the east or west coasts. There are other resources free on the Internet for Texas and Colorado. Arkansas State's web site promotes motorcycle tours with routes and attractions for free. Also this book's tours seem to be from the publisher's collection of the Motorcycle Journeys thought the same regions.

Useful, but not the Best.......2005-09-15
Teaching with cartoons, what a fine idea! Why are so many books so poorly executed.
My complaints here are small. I need my reading glasses for the small typeface, the cartoons are not from real comic strips (they are drawn just for this book), I find it a bit basic. Still, these are nit-picks, in general I like it. It builds thematic lexical sets.
The best cartoon book for Spanish students remains "Laugh 'n' Learn Spanish : Featuring the #1 Comic Strip "For Better or For Worse"
Fill your head with boatloads of words in context..........2004-10-01
Nothing beats a good context for picking up foreign language vocabulary. Many books simply push lists of words into the reader's head and hope that something catches to make the words stick. Unfortunately, rote memorization unaccompanied by usage typically results in horrificly low retention rates. This book has none zip nada of those problems. True, it includes lists of vocabulary words and lots of them. But the comics set it apart from other books that claim to expand one's vocabulary. Instead of sitting on a neuron impatiently waiting for an opportunity for use, the comics give the words a context. The word lists then becomes more of a map to help navigate the comics, and retention skyrockets.
The comics focus more on European Spanish (or Español Iberico) than American Spanish. Nonetheless, the word and phrase lists also include references and idioms unique to Latin American Spanish. Words and phrases not used in Latin American Spanish get an asterisk next to them, so it's easy to tell them apart. Regardless, this book will probably better suit those wanting to speak Spanish in Spain. But anyone learning Spanish can benefit greatly from it.
Probably the best way to get the most out of this book is to read all of the vocabulary for a particular comic first, then read that same comic a few times through to cement the words in memory. Repetition and context will fuel retention, and returning to previously read comics will yield surprising results. Some words will stick like paste on a first reading; others may take a few times through. Nonetheless, many rewards await those who read through the entire book more than a few times.
Lastly, this is not a beginner's Spanish book. It assumes much foreknowledge from the reader. Basic grammar and very basic vocabulary are not covered in any depth. Probably the best time to go through this book would be after completing a basic Spanish class or book (i.e., know more than just present indicative verb conjugation, sentence structure, same basic vocabulary, pronouns, etc.). The level of learning can best be described as beginner intermediate. Those in the advanced level will likely breeze through it. So get going, read some comics, and learn a load of Spanish words.
Vocabulary builder is great.......2001-02-13
I learned everyday English by reading a lot of comics and I always wanted a comic strip in Spanish. This book is exactly that and has a vocab reference for each strip. Great way to learn!
Great supplement for learning Spanish!.......2000-07-28
From the perspective of a Spanish teacher, this is a wonderful book to help build your Spanish vocabulary and comprehension.
The way the it's set up is: On one page there is a FULL page cartoon strip in color. There is a lot of dialogue, idioms, and basic vocabulary. One the opposite page is a list of vocabulary found in the comic strip in Spanish and English, divided into categories. The book is organized by cartoon title and topic. Some topics include: food & drink, money, travelling, etc. There are 30 cartoons in total, a well-organized table of contents, a glossary and a verb conjugation help section.
I definitely think this would be a great way to expand your knowledge (or your students' knowledge) of Spanish in a very interesting and humorous context.
The content is appropriate for high school and college level students, and for any level of study, although first and second year students would need help understanding the more complex structures.

Lots of Santa, light on other Christmas imagery.......2006-11-06
This book is good if you want Santa Claus images, images of children and toys, Christmas trees and some miscellaneous wreath and ivy.
This book is lacking if you want images of reindeer, the 12 days of Christmas, snowmen or any religious Christmas imagery. None of these things, by and large, are in this book.
In any case the images provided are numerous and clear. They scan well and the CD=ROM is easy to use. I just wish there was a little more of non-Santa imagery.

Pet ownership is a responsibility as well as a joy. Owners who do not safeguard their pets are not doing the pets any favors; they are simply being irresponsible owners.
When Morris writes, "I felt that [Spit McGee] should have one chance at least to become a father" I wanted to reach into his grave and slap him. In numerous other places he endangers his cat (and I assume dog in the earlier book) in the name of misplaced anthropomorphized freedom.
These books should come with parental advisories: kids, don't try this at home.

I read this book in one day, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I highly recommend it to anyone who loves cats as much as I do. Great story!
Fairly Pedestrian Conversion Story, Lacks Gusto.......2004-08-02
I finished this book with my beloved Siamese, Tia, draped across my lap. As she looked up at me and I gazed down at her, I wondered what I found lacking about this novel. Was it not gushing or reverential enough? Was Morris too languid or episodic? It wasn't too bad necessarily, but it didn't leap out demanding 5 stars like I was hoping for when I saw it. There are of course mild laughs to be had by some of the anecdotes, and by the end the author's conversion is complete. Willie Morris, who apparently was always a `dog' man, circuitously comes into the company of split eyed Spit McGee. Spit grows on Morris over time. The rest of the novel details their interaction and the constant comparisons to his previous dogs. There are a couple groups who will read this book, those that have been cat lovers all their lives, and those like Morris who are joiners. I fall into the former camp. I think my disaffection here boils down to impatience with those who don't grasp the allure and majesty of cats initially, and need to go on some sort of personal vision quest to `get' it. Arguably, that may make the late comers appreciative, but the author's constant questioning, comparing, and reassessing of the cats love is unnecessary for the born ailurophile. Juxtaposed to the sloppy, loud, non-focused devotion of a dog, when a cat chooses to grace you as an object of affection it is a supremely special gift. Thankfully, it appeared that Morris eventually realized this.
I Love Spit McGee!.......2004-07-14
I absolutely loved this little book! I saw the movie, "My Dog Skip" and was interested in reading the actual book and came across Spit and decided to buy both! I am a cat lover; have been all my life. It was really neat to read about Willie's journey into the cat world! Willie Morris' nostalgic writing style and how he learns to appreciate the uniqueness and quirky nature of the cat leaves you wanting more!

I just finished reading this book and I adored it. I have (in the past 2 years) welcomed two cats in to my life after having been a "dog person" since birth (we always had 3 at a time). Willie Morris' insights in to his cats' behaviour as well as the notions those of us who have never had a cat have are 100% on target. I can't imagine a person who would not find this easy read a wonderful slice of both dog vs. cat life but also of the South and the relationships we share with our pets.

Donald Bull obviously knows his corkscrews. He has assembled a fascinating exposition on corkscrews which delights your eyes as you turn each page. If you thought corkscrews were just for opening bottles, you're wrong. Donald Bull shows you that corkscrews are works of art as well.
The layout is beautiful and his corkscrew erudition is undoubtable. You should get a copy for yourself. A work of art.

Carving Inspiration.......2004-04-27
This book is written for collectors but as a woodcarver, I appreciate the history of woodcarving that is a part of this book. The book is filled with great color photos of carvings done over many years. On the downside, it cost me more money because after reading it, I ended up going to ebay and bidding on several anri carvings. I did note than a number of the carvings for sale were being sold by the books author.
