    I visited Ghana in April 2007, and although I was visiting relatives and so had some local contacts, this book was a great help, both from the point of view of planning my trip and learning about the country. The short commentaries from various contributors on subjects such as local wildlife, nightlife or travelling solo as a woman, were especially informative and often entertaining as well. The maps in particular, while simple, were indispensable, as good local maps can be quite difficult to find even in Ghana.

    A useful additional tool are the regular updates to the guide on the Bradt website, which have many contributions from recent travellers, including places that are closed (either temporarily or permanently) and recommendations for additional places to stay/eat or visit. I've heard that the 4th edition is due out in fall of 2007, and I'm tempted to go ahead and get it, too, for my next visit!

    If you are traveling to Ghana, West Africa, this is the essential guide to have with you. It has an easy to read layout and includes everything you would ever need to know. I highly recommend this if you are going to that area. I am glad I own a copy!

        This book first came to my attention when I saw a review of it in Time Magazine, 1970(!), and then again in a National Geographic issue 1977.

        My first copy (Ballantine Books, Inc. May 1973) became so dog-eared and worn, that I bought the revised edition (Lyons Press) as a gift to myself in Dec 2000.

        Quite a remarkable book in it's history, coverage and research. The mustang has been much maligned by ranchers and the U.S. government as a nuisance and classified as "domestic strays," thus various methods have been used to round up these poor beasts (remember the film "The Misfits"?)and subject them to every kind of mistreatment imagineable, including death.

        Thankfully, through the efforts of Ms Ryden and her book, and various animal protection agencies, we now recognize the contribution, history and legacy that these horses have played such an important part in the history and settlement of the American west. They are the only living heritage and symbol of the history of the west, and as such, should be granted protection as an endangered species from all levels of government in the U.S.

        A truly wonderful book. A must have for every horselover. Belongs with Ms Ryden's companion book "Wild Horses I Have Known" which features full colour, full page, never before published photographs not seen in her first book.

        I learned a lot about how the West was formed from this book. Hope has done some wonderful research on this topic. I agree with Hope about the US government's mistreatment of wild animals. They're disgusting and they're still spewing their false propaganda to get the naive American public to believe their falsehoods. However, Hope makes several extremely pro-Canada opinions which I disagree about. First of all, the Canadian government has allowed wild horse hunting to be legal, even today. There are only 200 wild horses left in Canada, compared to about 37,000 (BLM estimates - who knows how truthful they are) in the American wild. Canada treats its wild animals dastardly. Each year, hundreds of thousands of baby seals are slaughtered for their fur. Their bloody carcasses are strewn on the virgin white snow, a sad and tragic reminder of the callousness of the Canadian government to its wild animals. They're no better than the US government when it comes to wild animals and I think in some ways, the US government is better than their northern counterparts, especially over the last thirty odd years. Canada also has an ancient and very archaic domestic animal protection law. Last year, animal protection agencies worked to have a new, tougher law passed but it was defeated in Parliament.

        This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in wild horses and mustangs. The author does a great job of providing historical knowledge and facts about the early relationship between wild horses and men, and about how horses roamed America before they were reintroduced by Europeans. The author also discusses current issues involving mustangs and their future in the American West. This book is so good I definately needed it for my personal collection.

        Delightful book (originally published in 1997) has been updated with '99 values. The 144 page book features more than 400 sharp, large, full color cover photographs of the Whitman Juvenile Books you may have enjoyed as a child. Sufficient background information is provided along with collectors information, grading your books, conventions, and more. You'll enjoy browsing and using this book. Very enjoyable !

          This book has something for every event in a garden. Planting, designing, what to grow and how to grow it. It is one of the most useful gardening books that I have on my shelf and use it often. In the winter its great to read and work out any previous season problems and plan for the new year.

                    Have you always wanted to learn to crochet but never found a book that was of any help? Then you need a copy of CROCHET ESSENTIALS! This is a book that shows you as well as tells you how to crochet. The graphics help you understand what the words are saying. As a visual person, that is the best way for me to learn! And there are not just one or two pages but ten pages of basics so it covers it all. It even includes an abbreviation chart, a conversion chart for the hooks and an explanation of what each skill level represents.

                    Once you get the basics under control, then there are a dozen different projects you can try your new skills on from a simple potholder to a sweater and hat for baby. There are plenty of other patterns too such as a scarf or a vest. These 39 pages will have you crocheting before you know it. You will even be able to create an afghan to cuddle under.

                    If you are in the horticultural landscape business, or simply a gardener who is planning a colorful garden with annuals, this is a handy reference book with beautiful photographs of flowers and landscapes (by Derek Fell). Novice gardeners will find this book by Ms. Murray to be an asset. I have used and referred to this book countless times and have told many friends and associates about it. Wish it wasn't out of print!

                      The Roman colony of Philippi is the site upon which Paul founded his first European congregation. There, he encountered a political entity which bore the stamp of Roman culture through and through. Part I describes Philippi's political and religious situation based on numismatic, epigraphical, archaeological and literary sources. Part II reconstructs the relationship between Paul, the congregation, and the city of Philippi, and demonstrates the influence which the Roman environment exerted on the church's organization and preaching. The work reaches the conclusion that the Philippean community assumed an active and self-confident role in implementing its mission. In so doing, it clashed with the Roman authorities and their insistence upon a religious praxis that did not call into question the principles or existence of the Roman State. The book contributes to the interpretation of the Epistle to the Philippians as well as to the history of early Christianity and the history of Religions during the first century. FR Die romische Kolonie Philippi ist der Ort, an dem Paulus seine erste Gemeinde in Europa grundet. Dort trifft er auf ein Gemeinwesen, das ganz von der romischen Kultur gepragt ist. Teil I stellt die politische und religiose Lage Philippis auf der Grundlage numismatischer, epigraphischer, archaologischer und literarischer Quellen dar. Teil II rekonstruiert das Verhaltnis zwischen Paulus, der Philippergemeinde und der Stadt und weist den Einflu der romischen Umwelt auf Gemeindeorganisation und Verkundigung in Philippi nach. His daughter has drawn on letters, journals, and church records to write this biography. However, it is more than just a simple biography. This book is a history of Black life during the early part of the century and a chronicle of the political and religious struggles of the first autonomous Black church in the U.S.

                        Joseph Gomez (1890-1979) was an AME minister, and was ordained a Bishop in 1948. He was also a teacher, civil rights pioneer, scholar, writer, and humanitarian. He was born on the island of Antigua and came to the US in 1908. He served several congregations but was most closely associated with Ohio, particularly Cleveland and also Wilberforce college, from which he graduated.

                        His biography tells the inspiring story of his life, family, ministry, struggles, and victories.

                        Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."                         An absorbing biography of an Afircan-American's rise to the highest position of the AME church as a Bishop, and his challenges to build and maintain the church. It also explains his challenges and struggles in America as a African-American and the love of God, his family, friends an associates . It was hard to put down. At times I was with him in the struggles. It provides another format to look at the African-American history in America, and the impact on a cutlture and people. His daughter has done an excellent job at collecting and recording this history. I only hope others will follow in her footsteps. The book was rather pricey but well done with adequate references.

                        Bishop Gomez built the AME church in Cleveland, Ohio. He rewrote church doctrine in the 1970s for the first time since written by Richard Allen. The book also depicted his struggles and lonely walk with God as he lead a Black congregation and was faced with issues during the Civil Rights movement. The book was easy to read, inspiring, and you didn't want to put it down until finished!
