a lot information but..........2007-07-14
Its really good book with full of information about all islands, but...
very thick and heavy. I had holiday in Bora Bora only, so I used only small part of this thick book, but i found all information. I think better have small one about only Bora Bora or other islands for example.
There are no any photos in book. But, you can read about history of Tahiti, about culture and etc.
Tahiti & French Polynesia Guide.......2007-04-09
Fantastic Book. I have read it over and over. I love Jan Prince's stories about the local people. Jan knows Tahiti better than anyone I have ever met in French Polynesia in the last 30 years. I have been back to Tahiti over 53 times since my first trip there in 1975. I use her book to plan my visits. Great advice. This book is a must read if you are going to Tahiti and her islands. Maururu to Jan.
Tahiti Guide Book.......2007-03-14
This book is written by Jan Prince who is an ex-pat American that has lived in the islands since the 1970's. I found the layout, information and light-hearted manner of writing essential to planning my trip to Tahiti. I looked at many other guides on the Tahitian Islands and none of them seemed as informative or easy to read. Highly recommended.
awesome.......2007-03-08
This is a must for anyone traveling to tahiti. I bought it after I had already booked my trip. But, I wish I had it before booking, because it gives hotel reviews and activities. I still used it to plan some of my activities while there.
A Life saver even for a Travel Agent that specializes in Tahiti and her islands.......2007-03-01
What would I do without that book. Even thou I have travelled to Tahiti several times, attended seminars on Tahiti and try to educate myself thru reading Tahitian News and other publications, Jan Princes book is my life saver. There is always a client that has a question that I don't know the answer to. Trust me Jan has the answer, whatever I look for it's in there.
Can't wait for the new edition, even as a professional with access to so many websites, forums etc. this book has the answers to all there is to know........don't leave for "Nirvana" (Tahiti) without that book in your carry on.

New edition is great!.......2007-09-28
This new edition of LP's Tahiti and French Polynesia guide was invaluable on my recent trip. The details of the out of the way islands like Maupiti are wonderful, the writing is funny but clear and informative. It had details of local places and special spots that were not in the old one. I read up on the writers and one of them is an American woman who lives there, I could really tell that she understood the perspective of a tourist. I carried this book in my purse for the two and a half weeks I just spent there and referred to it often. Especially for the directions, cultural details and local customs that I needed. I felt like I had a local friend as my guide. I also find it comforting that they take no freebies from the hotels.
We stayed in small pensions and loved it, no one has screens in Tahiti it seems, but the guide did mention electric mosquito devices which was helpful, it also gave food details on the half-board places, and on the whole seemed accurate and well researched. The enthusiasm of the writing is infectious and I totally fell in love with Tahiti and the other islands we visited, I felt like I really got to know it better than I would have alone because of this book.
Good, but needed more.......2004-05-23
I've used many Lonely Planet (LP) guides and found this one to be lacking their usual detail. I got the sense much hotel information was pilfered from Web surfing the basic info, rather than first-person investigation. While still a good book to take, next time (and there will be a next time because Tahiti is wonderful) I'll be sure take another guide along with it, and to thoroughly read actual travelers' online reviews. I'll also know the questions I need to ask before booking. My sense was that the reviewers weren't seeing things through the fresh-eyes of a first time traveler. The details, such as directions accommodation features were often lacking.
One thing I've always liked about LP is that they will list small locally owned budget places - that are occasionally hidden gems - whereas many other guides only list "approved" chain-type accommodations. However, in this book key information about lodging was missing. For example, it's very uncommon to find window screens in Polynesia despite a lot of mosquitoes, yet it is not standard for the book to say if there are screens or mosquito netting at each location (sometimes there are neither). Screens would be a big selling point for me. In Lonely Planet's India guide - which I was quite happy with - they deliberately note whether hotels have air-conditioning or not; in this guide this rather important information (for the tropics) is randomly added. Sometimes we'd get there and they'd have AC and sometimes they wouldn't. A more specific example is a pension primarily described as "friendly" - which it was in spades - with no mention that there's one bathroom shared with 8 people and that doesn't have hot water. With what prices are in Tahiti, poor information is very costly. One "resort" (our over-water bungalow splurge) was merely described as "competitive with other luxury resorts." Come to find out it had bedbugs and no air-conditioning.
If level of detail can be evidenced by pages numbers, note that LP's Hawaii guide (five main islands) is 615 pages, while their Tahiti guide (50+ islands/atolls, with ten commonly traveled) is a only 287 pages.
Outdated!!!.......2003-02-13
I was expecting more from lonely planet but aside from the maps, the book is obsolete. It also reads like a text book, no passion, no flavor, very boring. The sections on each area are not very big at all. ...
Excellant Guide book.......2002-06-02
This book did a wonderful job of not only preparing us for the journey, but help us get around. We have now been there three times to three difference islands, and each time it preformed well. Although with all travel books they get out to date in a year or two, you should always call a head to verify critical information.
Good Field Guide.......2000-09-28
This book is very comprehensive. It will help you find all of the places you want to go, and will give you an overview of what to expect. Some of the items could have been a little more detailed though. Directions were OK. Luckily the islands are easy to get around. We found the combination of this book, Jan Prince's book, and the Moon book to be the perfect combination for our trip in November of 1998. Read more about our trip and how we used these books at DiveAtlas.com.
This review replaces the out of date one that already exists.
Book Description
Specifically targeted towards the needs of a second language research audience, Second Language Research: Methodology and Design addresses basic issues related to research design, providing step-by-step instructions for how to carry out studies. This up-to-date text includes chapters that cover identifying research problems and questions; selecting elicitation measures; dealing with ethical issues related to data gathering; validity and reliability in research; research in second and foreign language classroom contexts; data description and coding; and data analysis. Also included is a chapter on the much needed and rarely addressed topic of writing up SLA research, giving concrete suggestions about preparing for publication. Principles of both qualitative and quantitative research are discussed in the context of design issues. Throughout the book, examples from applied linguistics, second language acquisition, and TESOL are provided. Helpful discussion and data-based skill-building exercises at the end of each chapter promote better understanding of the principles discussed. A glossary outlines the key terms in second language research. Second Language Research: Methodology and Design is an ideal textbook for introductory and advanced classes in second language research methods, as well as classes in related areas, for example, TESOL research methods.
Book Description
This book aims to teach the reader how to design effective experiments. The overwhelming majority of life scientists design experiments. However they tend to approach design in an informal ad hoc way, improving their techniques in the light of experience. This book aims to provide the junior scientist a short-cut way to learn how to design effective experiments without going through a painful trial and error process. For more experienced scientists, the text should also function to stimulate them to think about the way they design experiments, and perhaps lead them to design more effective experiments in future. Concepts, such as power analysis and pseudoreplication, that many experienced scientists consider to be mystifying or difficult, are explained in clear and practical terms. The emphasis throughout is to demonstrate that good experimental design is about clear thinking and biological understanding, not mathematical or statistical complexity. Book Description
A lot has happened in the world of gardening since Theme Gardens was first published in 1982. The parallels to cooking are striking-we now have a new and much expanded repertoire of flowers, herbs, and vegetables; we look for more variety in the way we garden and landscape; and it's become a more important part of many more people's lives. And a lot has happened to Barbara Damrosch. Through Theme Gardens and her classic, The Garden Primer, through her Gardener's Calendar and other ventures, she's established herself as one of the country's authorities.
Now, at long last, Theme Gardens is revised and updated to serve a new generation of gardening enthusiasts. It's like a new book in presentation, much more weighted to photography and with a reworked design that freshens and modernizes the landscape plans to make them easier to read and to follow. The lists of recommended plants is revamped, with special attention to eliminating potentially invasive varieties and adding new plants more suited to the grower's environment. All-new photographs are larger, selected illustrations are updated. What hasn't changed is the core of inspiring, practical, creative ideas-from a butterly garden to a garden of old roses, from a Shakespeare garden to a moon garden to a Zen garden to a medieval paradise garden, Theme Gardens presents plans for creating 16 distinctively themed gardens along with instructions for growing and maintaining over 300 plants. Recipes, in other words, that every gardener will love.
Customer Reviews:
Good for it's intended use.......2007-04-20
For those who want step by step instruction in laying out a particular kind of garden...this book can be most helpful. Various types of gardens are included & plant lists are provided ...some history on each particular garden is also added in some cases.
Writer's style is very approachable & easy to understand...no high & lofty botanical terms to look up in the dictionary.
Author carefully explains various aspects of developing the projects in some cases such as how to build raised beds, prepare soil & building a trellis etc. These additions are there to supplement the ideas put forward by the author in a very effective manner.
I recommend this book on the premise of it's intended purpose...to help people looking to establish a few particular kinds of gardens & suggested layouts. With respect to it's purpose the objective has been met.
More different themes, please.......2007-04-03
My 1982 edition of "Theme Gardens" is well-worn, dirt-spattered, and much loved. When I saw a revised edition, I was thrilled, hoping it would illustrate another dozen or so themes. Unfortunately, very little has changed from the first edition; most of the changes I found were in the photos while the text is almost the same, as are all the theme gardens themselves. If Ms. Damrosch writes another book that shows us new themes, I'll buy it, but until then my trusty book from '82 is just fine.
Suggestions for themes:
A Songbird Garden
An Elizabethan Herb Garden
A Reader's Garden
A Dyer's Garden
A Red, White, and Blue Garden
A Biblical Garden
Rivised Theme Gardens.......2004-06-24
Don't waste your time or money. What she wrote in the First Theme Gardens is enough. If you can't find the first one then this is a good book, but as a REVISED and UPDATED Edition the changes were very subtle.
Even a novice can have a beautiful garden.......2000-05-30
This book has become my dear companion over the past 12 years. The plans are beautiful and they have worked well for me, but the general information, and capsules on specific plants CONTINUE to teach me. Each plan is shown in three views, for color and growth covering spring, summer, and fall. As I contemplate my new Cape Cod location, and my mother's shady retreat in Ohio, I draw out my own plans this way now. My husband bought me Theme Gardens in 1988, and it has helped me grow from a complete novice in California to a skilled amateur in New Jersey, especially with perennials. I planted the Secret Garden, and every spring I think, that Barbara Damrosch really made this great! I am buying a copy for my mother, a hesitant gardener, and together we will plant another.
Great idea book, jump starts the planning........1999-01-14
If you just want it done for you this is the book. Garden plans, seasonal views, and good lists of plants. You could make a lot of mistakes in designing your own 1st garden, but this takes a lot of the guess work out of your gardening.
Start with this book as a jump start, in the following years you'll get the hang of it. Good basically for zone 4-9, plus/minus 1.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
On the rooftop of the world, shoe-horned into the Grand Himalayas, Bhutanor Thunder Dragonis a fiercely independent kingdom. Isolated, charming, peaceful and religious, the Bhutanese are a pragmatic, sensitive people who take from the West what will benefit their country and leave the rest. Get another guidebook for Bhutan........2007-04-22
This guidebook to Bhutan was not at all helpful. It is filled with tiny details which may be of interest to the devotee, but gives the average traveler very limited background. You can read about the many different kinds of chortens, for example, but you will find the discussion of Tantric Buddhism in general perplexing. The maps are not good, and no attempt is made to separate the spectacular (such as the Punakha Dzong) from the mundane (such as the Thimpu Dzong). The information on trekking is very limited and dated. Get the Lonely Planet guide, along with the Bart Jordan book on trekking-if you intend to do a trek. Bhutan is a very expensive country to visit, and you should have a better guide in hand before your visit.
A book for appreciating and understanding Bhutan.......2006-12-04
I have traveled extensively in the Far East, but have never before to Bhutan, until now (2007). I always like to read up on places before I visit them and generally travel as independently as reasonably possible.
I purchased both this book and the Lonely Planet guide and found the combination excellent. This book has more about the places, the people and their customs and the history. Don't expect it to be a comprehensive list of places to stay and places to eat. It contrasts well with Lonely Planet's backpacker's reference book image.
I think this is a good book and doubt whether you will be disappointed if you buy it.
Book Description
Bhutan is the last intact Himalayan kingdom. Roughly the size of Switzerland but with a population of about 700,000 people, Bhutan may be diminutive, yet it is home to one of the most astonishingly diverse natural and cultural ecologies on earth. It is often called "the last Shangri-la" and with good reason. The pristine environment and incomparably kindhearted people make this a truly extraordinary place.
The book,
Bhutan, is a visual odyssey across the kingdom. Teams from M.I.T. and Friendly Planet took over 40,000 photographs on four extensive expeditions across the country. They flew by helicopter, rode mountain ponies, trekked with packhorses and yaks, and journeyed by caravan on farflung roads and foot trails across the Bhutanese Himalaya. Local students, like Choki Lhamo (a 14-year-old girl from Trongsa who aspires to become a doctor) and Gyelsey Loday (the son of the head lama in the village of Phongmey), joined these ambitious trips and helped with the photography in order to share a corner of their world. The stunning imagery in the book loosely follows these journeys. Portraits of people are lifesized (or bigger). Panoramas convey some of the staggering sweep of the mountains and the awesome ancient architecture.
Bhutan begins appropriately with something very special. Renowned artist and author, David Macaulay, created an atlas of the country expressly for this book. Masterfully drawn, the map is surrounded by sketches of some of Bhutan's most salient features: massive dzongs, Himalayan peaks, stupas and other impressions decorate the map, almost as if they were pages torn from the journal of a travelling artist.
Brilliantly photographed,
Bhutan conveys some of the specialness of that unique country. But the book is also socially meaningful, and a powerful reminder that we live in a big world. There are places and people whose beauty and grace are endlessly worth cherishing.

Let's face it. You'd be stupid not to get the "Better Together" deal, which includes an $8 map of Bhutan with the $15,000 book!
a visual odyssey.......2006-03-24
Awesome pictoral of Bhutan.......2006-01-30
This book is amazing, it is just like you are there. Extremely well packaged and shipped 2nd day air via UPS. Worth every penny.
Overwhelmingly Breathtaking.......2005-01-20
The first time I walked into the West Chicago, IL library after the Bhutan book was placed on display, I thought I had been transported to the Himalayas. Standing in front of these gorgeous mountains, I could feel myself being pulled in. Subsequent days as the pages were turned, I was impressed with the beauty of the area, the beauty of the people, the vibrancy of their costumes. I make a lot of trips to the library-don't want to miss a page. Thanks Dr. George Hawley for donating your son's wonderful work to West Chicago. Worth a trip to view where ever it is on display.
A Marvelous Journey.......2004-12-18
I am so delighted to have "discovered" Bhutan...it's absolutely transporting...and what a way to spend an evening! Even a glass of port, a box of dark chocolate, and a roaring fire would not have been as delicious.

It is also a documentary of remarkable depth and insight - and a poignant record of fragile cultures in transition. A lavishly produced volume of the highest quality, Himalayan Odyssey is 128 pages of spectacular photographs, insightful text and extensive captions, all exquisitely printed on heavyweight art paper. Hard cover, cloth bound. Oversized 10.5 x 15 inch landscape format. Introduction by Pico Iyer. Jacket comments by Martin Scorsese and Peter Matthiessen.

Sublime Equanimity.......2003-06-06
Short and simple will be enough here:
128 pages of mystical beauty that can be found in the Hymalayas and in this book. There is some use of symbolic metaphors of early morning mysts, people, homes, genuine symbols of culture and nature. Movements captured for an eternity. A window to peer through for most of the people that will never be able to experience and see these places and its' people in their lives. There is good in this, for too many people would destroy such beauty and equanimity....
A deep look.......2002-12-26
First a disclaimer: I am a friend, and working peer of David's albeit my caim to fame is in an entirely different genre, though my recent work is now following in David's footsteps, metaphorically speaking.
This work is heady. Makes you a bit short of breath at times. Jealous. Beautiful. Not only the subject matter (fifty years of footprints!) but also, for me, it's the formalist quality of the actual photography. He gives us an unwavering horizontal rectangle and fills it with stunning, buzzing, mature compositons and color, whether it be in a blinding whiteout or an early morning smoke with sherpas. His photographs bring us an inherently exotic world (and thus terribly misused) in a style relative to that of Eggleston, Singh, and Misrach. Important work, that overshadows the mostly sad, mediocre books done on this region by well placed trekkers.
This is about the people, and their art of living in such a grand and harsh place. David's own art brings it all home. I congratulate him for bringing this legacy to the world.
Himalayan Odyssey.......2002-10-17
It is clear that David Robbins reveals artistic intellegence surpassed only by the beauty of his subject matter. As I turn through the pages I see metaphore after metaphore expressed by horses as mountains, a mother and child as a great wind, a man bearing a burden to the elevations as great slices of frozen rock jutt upward toward the sky. These metaphores call to us and serve as reminders of endurance, of simplicity, and all that is precious. In the pages of this book, your imagination can be unlocked and your thirst for understanding and compassion unbridled. It is important, especially in this time, to remember the beauty of the human spirit, the beauty of the earth and how they can fit together.
Stripping away the stereotypes........2002-10-07
Well beyond the typical books of this genre. Mr Robbins not only tells a story, he does it with an insight into the hardships and the religious intensities of this culture I have never felt before. This book changed me. My ultimate compliment to an author.
Buy this if you want to see beyond yourself, into another world of human existance.

Time to WAKE UP!.......2007-07-21
This story touches my heart, my funnybone, and feeds my soul. His accounts are both entertaining and spritually informative. By just reading this book, I feel like I have studied directly with Swami Rama, and am connected with his teachings. I would like to thank the author for sharing these experiences in such a heart-felt and honest way.
I highly recommend this book for everyone, but in particular it would be beneficial for people who are dissatisfied with religion, but aren't necessarily drawn to new-age thought, people who want to deepen their spiritual practice, people who are ready to awaken to a new reality, or folks who are just looking for some answers or meaning in life. Be well.
An Amazingly Great Book.......2004-10-08
Reading about Dr. O'Brien's experiences with Swami Rama (one of the most influential yoga masters of the 20th century) is spiritually galvanizing. This is one of the best spiritual autobiographies ever! Very interesting, very inspiring, very highly recommended!
Some wonderful tales of the miracles of Swami Rama.......1998-06-25
Justin Obrien, having been directed by his master, Swami Rama, almost a quarter of a century ago to someday write a book about their times together, finally completes his task.
If you know who Swami Rama is, you will surely enjoy this collection of "Swamiji" stories as told by his devout disciple, Justin OBrien. And if you don't know him, this book will introduce you to a guru extraordinair.
Swami Rama came from India to America with a mission to bridge the gap between East and West, and in the process accomplished some incredible feats. In this book, you will read of the miracles of a Saint, and the growth of his disciple, Justin, as told in a delightfully entertaining fashion.
Don't pass this one up.

Customer Reviews:
I feel like I just came back from a trek!.......2006-01-29
If you read this book, skip the so-called prologue, since it's just 3 out of sequence bits. Once the story gets going, we experience all the doubts, questions, pain and joys of Parker Antin's epic journey. The writing is vivid and clear, but not over-blown. And unlike travelers from slightly earlier times, I felt that Parker did his best to treat his guide and porters as equals, willing participants in every aspect of the trip. Of course it takes some bull-headedness to walk across the Himalayas in the first place, but the goal was simply to do it. There was no quest for Lhasa or some other destination, just a quest to make the trip for its own sake.
At several points, there was no alternative but to keep going, despite the guide's serious illness. To have stopped would have meant certain death for the sick man and the rest of the small group as well.
One may certainly question the effects of trekking and tourism on indigenous cultures. Simply by having things that local people don't have, by taking their pictures, buying their food, giving--or not giving--candy or pencils to their children, one changes their world. Should some cultures be walled off from the rest of the world then? Kept in picturesque innocence and ignorance and poverty?
Parker Antin tried to travel close to the local level. He tried to fit in. And his book allowed me, too out of shape ever to see the Himalaya land and people, to see through his eyes. It was a spectacular trip!
great story.......2004-11-14
This is a great story of travel in an demanding region. Excellent with insights on the Nepelese that support the journey and on the Nepelese encountered. Very good adventure story, with ups and downs. Great descriptions of the physcial challenge and good on the reflections of the author. I read many exploration and adventure books and articles, this ranks with the best. Very authentic, good new insights, and great challenges.
Single-minded pursuit of a goal.......2003-06-21
I was struck continuously with Parker's unchanging selfishness. The entire expedition nearly died just to reach HIS goal. He defies the police to enter forbidden mountain areas, ends up getting the entire expedition lost and his best guide nearly dies as Parker drags him over mountain passes in single-minded pursuit of Parker's goal. Even at the end, he casts aside a woman he loves because he deems their cultures "too different" and, although he thinks she may be able to cope with the differences, he admits it is he who cannot. Nothing seems to reach this guy. He's determined to have life meet his expectations, no matter what cost.
what an adventure !.......2000-05-16
This was the first "adventure travel" type book that I had ever read, and it truly got me hooked on the genre. Before this book, I had thought that adventure travel was backpacking Europe without a copy of Dad's credit card. But these guys take travelling/trekking to a whole new level. The adventures that they get involved in are amazing, like walking a ledge over a 1000-foot high gorge, or running out of food in a world where food is scarce and money is completely worthless. But his ingenuity always impresses, as does his writing style. VERY enjoyable book. I go back to it occasionally and re-read some of the best parts
This book is an odyssey in itself!.......2000-04-19
"Himalayan Odyssey" by Dr. Parker Antin is an excellent story about the author's journey across Nepal. Not only does this book detail the man's physical trek through the lesser know regions of Nepal, but also offers insight to the spiritual nature of such an expedition. I think that this book is a must read for anyone who plans on backpacking through remote lands or even just wishes to do so vicariously through Dr. Antin.
