Invaluable.......2007-04-27
My husband and I took our maiden trip to Paris in September 2006. I bought Savoir-Flair! about two weeks before we left and devoured it on the plane. Although my husband and I both had studied French in college, we were rusty and unsure what to expect, especially given the bad PR the French seem to receive from Americans.
Ms. Platt's book explains so well the cultural differences between the French and Americans, and we followed her advice to a T. We only encountered one person during the week we visited who was downright rude, and I just think he was a curmudgeon. Everyone else was so gracious, despite our terrible pronunciations and grammatical errors. The fact that we were attempting to adapt instead of forcing ourselves on the people we encountered put everyone at ease, from shopkeepers to waiters. It was a magical experience.
And I put Ms. Platt's tips to use at a Starbucks in La Defense. My husband was having major American coffee withdrawal, so while he was in a business meeting I popped over to the Starbucks to get him a big cup of java. I ordered in French. I know I made some mistakes, but the barista was very nice about it, and we laughed. She spoke English but appreciated my not assuming that she did.
Behind me in line was a very impatient older American woman who was crowding my personal space. When I moved over to wait for my coffee, the older lady stepped up to the counter and asked, quite loudly as if the barista had a hearing impairment, whether the place served cappuccino. The woman was practically shouting. And the barista never offered to speak English, either. I took my coffee and slipped out, lest someone assume I was American, too. In hindsight, I should have offered the older woman my copy of Savoir-Flair!
Read the first book first.......2007-02-27
Unless you need fast, specific travel advice, it would be a good idea to read Polly's broad cultural perspective of France first (French or Foe), and then assimilate the more specific tips in this sequel.
Oh, just buy both books at a discount and read them on the plane. It's going to take awhile, since you can't catch the Concorde anymore.
Both books are well-written and useful, but the first is a broad, classical exposition of how to deal with the frog mentality. (By the way, they will not take the "frog" term with any more offense than the Brits resent being called "rosbifs" or Arabs find the term "beurs" offensive in France. It ain't a big deal.)
When she gets specific, Polly is usually at the high end of societal etiquette and decorum. You can't go wrong following her advice, but you can bend her rules a bit. If you aren't invited to a formal dinner party with place cards but a college kid party, taking a bottle of wine or a bouquet of flowers will not be considered too gauche.
On the other hand, carefully remember not to touch the merchandise in any small boutique where it is artfully displayed. That really ruins their day. The French are funny, and Polly sees the inherent humor -- as well as the logic and history -- of their ways.
Savoir-Flair: 211 Tips for Enjoying France and the French.......2007-01-19
Excellent book.
Information is right on!
Read and then enjoy your relations with the lovely French people. When you know the rules, there are no rude Frenchmen or women. They just want to be loved for who they are.
Polly Platt's books are great!
Cultural Differences 101.......2007-01-03
If you thought your inlaws from another part of the country were difficult to understand, wait 'til you read about the French. Their culture has been evolving for literally thousands of years, certainly greatly for the past five hundred years or more.
They have had some dicey interactions with the English, e.g. Hundred Years War, but don't seem to have learned much from them (good thing!). Paris has been a leading cultural center for a long time. The French deserve to have a unique and special culture; it complements their unique and beautiful language.
Their culinary preferences are far healthier than our own in the english speaking world, let alone tastier. You recall the joke in which the germans are the cops, the americans are the lovers, and the english are the cooks in Hell.
This book is well worth reading for the insights you will gain about the French - culture is a big component of each of our natures. We can't escape from its influence, and we can't refuse to recognize the salient points of foreign cultures.
You may learn plenty from this book; Tchao!
Very good follow-up book to "French or Foe".......2006-11-17
I can recommend this book to those interested in the French culture or those planning to travel there. If there has to be a choice between this book or her first book "French of Foe", her first book would be the better choice.

A great review of the Code of Ethics with clear examples........1999-11-04
This book is a must-have for the counselor or the counseling graduate student. Each section of the Code of Ethics is set forth with two applicable examples. One example is the "do" and one example is the "don't." These examples clarify the Code and make it much more understandable.

Customer Reviews:
A gem for any dog owner!.......2006-07-22
I had never seen this book and bought it blind on marketplace and all I can say is WOW! I wish I would have bought it sooner!!
It contains 12 chapters
~The wolfs descent
~The healthy dog
~Feeding and nutrition
~Canine structure
~Life support systmes
~The respiratoty systam
~The dogs world
~The skin
~The next generation
~The question of inheritance
~The Canine athlete
~Alternative approaches
Each chapter is very detailed with many drawings and photos of a healthy dog and problems that can arise. This book has a good section on first aid and a supply list for your kit and advice on what to do at home on while in route to the vet. Detailed instructions on bandaging variuos parts of the body and the easiest way to give medicines (liquid, pill, topical)
Chapter on how to elvuate your dogs food and what each part of the digestive system does. Also, what each ingredent in food does for your dog at diffent stages in his life (puppy, adult, senior).
Skeletal chapter very detailed showing normal bones and also problems in the bones and muscles. Detailed on many diesases that plague the bones with the appropate treatment listed.
Has a chapter devoted to the senses of the dogs and how problems in each sense affect the dog. Also covers behavioral problems in this chapter with ways to correct each problem.
Breeding chapter discusses pros and cons of breeding, spaying and neutering, natural breeding, artifical inseminaltion (very small section), ways to confirm pregnancy, whelping and complications.
Genetics chapter is a little more complicated, but has diagrams to help. Also has a chart of genetic defects in the dog and the mode of inheritance and age of onset.
Exercise chapter is a good outline for anyone with a sporting dog. (I have chi's so I didn't get much use from this one)
The book ends with alternative approaches showing different ways to deal with common problems. I have no idea if these work, but several vets wrote this book, so I assume it's pretty safe to say that they can't hurt, however in any medical emergency the only thing to do is rush to the vet, these are just suggestions which readers may find helpful for supportive therpy for non-life threatening problems.
Overall I rate this book very highly in my canine library. True, it is not the Mereck Vet Handbook, but for the average owner it is a great book with many photos and clear cut info.

Customer Reviews:
Chronometer Development Explained.......2003-04-11
This is an excellent history of the development of the marine chronometer from the earliest attempts through to the modern day. Gould was in an excellent position to write authoritatively because he reconstructed John Harrison's original "sea clocks" some of which had lain forgotten and in a very poor state. He not only restored them and got them working, but described them in detail for posterity.
This book contains a wealth of technical detail, carefully and accurately describing the designs, techniques and principles of the various developments that occurred as timekeeping at sea gradually improved over two centuries. Those who want technical details and explanations will not be disappointed in this book, while those who want to know about the background and the personalities who devoted their lives to the pursuit of accurate timekeeping will find plenty to interest them. The book contains many drawings and sketches of the various escapements which evolved and the other refinements that were invented in the course of the history of the chronometer.
All those interested in the history and technology of mechanical timepieces need to have this book in their library.
400 pages, 40+ photos, 85 sketches.
Book Description
This book will show you how to propagate and cultivate popular varieties, also how to use them for flavoring baked goods and making lovely topiaries, dried arrangements, and potpourri. I was very pleased to find a book that was so specifically aimed at my interets. I bought this book as a beginning scented geranium devotee, and you should see my garden now! Full of advice on different plants, as well as how to care for them. A wonderful subject, and a helpful book.

The Life and Confessions of a Black Studies Teacher is a poignant account of the experiences of a Black female growing up in the segregated South. Arrington describes how she overcome poverty and racism to be selected by The Black Panther Party to head the first Black studies in Oakland, CA. She discusses techniques to assist African American teachers with developing a curriculum that addresses the unique academic needs of inner city Blacks. She provides the reader with reasons why it is important to maintain Ethnic Studies as a separate department.

Book Description
New England is truly a Cabinet of Curiosities, and this indispensable guide directs you to its most bizarre, off the wall, and unsettling exhibits. Some evoke hilarity, some horror.
Discover singing sand, glowing tombstones, ghostly squirrels, and a musical instrument said to cause madness. Marvel at the most mysterious manuscript in the world. Visit a miniature replica of the Holy Land or climb carved stone steps leading . . . nowhere.
Curious New England points the way to all the tantalizing treats and terrifying treasures that remain tucked away in overlooked museums, private collections, and forgotten recesses of this very special region.
*A cursed statue in Maine
*Ageless American Megaliths
*A window embedded in Vermont earth
*Titus's Arch on a New Hampshire hilltop
*Artwork made from insect parts
With precise directions, hours, and contact information, these fascinating pages reveal each mystery, miracle, and marvel, from world-class weirdness, to minor curiosities, to entertaining distractions.
There'll be no more boring Sunday drives when you can visit a spider farm, explore the laboratory of "mad" scientist Wilhelm Reich, view the Hobo Hotel, and observe houses made from paper, wooden crates, mounds of earth--even covered bridges.
And New England's wonders never cease: discover evidence of manned flight a century before the Wright Brothers; visible phantoms manifesting from marble columns; and automobiles emerging from tarmac like dinosaurs from pits of tar.
This one-of-a-kind collection spotlights all six New England states,
illuminating everything that's wicked, weird, and wonderful in every hidden corner of a region that rivals Old England in mysteries, miracles, and marvels.
Customer Reviews:
Time to put more miles on the SUV...........2005-09-07
Never did I know that there where so many odd places to visit in New England. This book goes state by state and lists places to visit that are famous and infamous. Man now I wish I had a GPS to find them! Get this book!!
awesome travel guide to unusual New England sights.......2004-08-07
This is a terrific resource for those who will be travelling in New England and who are interested in seeing the more unusual sights the region has to offer. The book is divided into six chapters, each devoted to a state: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, and a map at the start of each chapter locates the cities covered. Each chapter contains entries listed alphabetically by city, and each entry contains a description, address, phone number, location, hours and sometimes a b&w picture. Entres include cemeteries, haunted houses, odd museums, unusual homes, monuments, etc. This book is lots of fun, contains great information and is well-written.
Terrific resource.
what a pleasent ramble down unknown roads!.......2004-01-12
If you like the path less traveled, then this book is for you. If disneyland, and the flashy theme parks are the forefront of the American psyche, then this is the back roads. To my mind infinitely more interesting, I only wish he could chronicle the whole of the US, not just New england. Not to be missed!
It made for an interesting honeymoon.......2003-10-23
My wife and I structured our honeymoon this month around this book, and we had a grand time touring its recommended destinations in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire. As we both work in horror publishing, we particularly enjoyed places like America's Stonehenge and H.P. Lovecraft's grave.
Buyers of this book should be forewarned to call ahead to every place they plan on visiting. We discovered that although this book was published this year, some of its information is already out-of-date. For instance, the aliens apparently beamed-up the UFO Museum two years ago. In some cases, the information was incomplete (e.g., the Occult Museum is only open to tour groups of 10 or more), or vague (e.g., road directions to the Bow Wow Villa (now no longer called that, by the way) and the Museum of Bad Art).
Overall, though, the book has lots of interesting information, and our vacation wouldn't have been quite as nice if we hadn't read it.
take yourself to "weirdsville".......2003-09-09
I liked this book because I'm always bored and searching for something different to do. If your into New England culture like I am then you'll appreciate us eccentric Yankees! Some of this stuff I wouldn't drive out of my way for but it's enjoyable to read about it. Having grown up in the Boston area I already knew about most of these places(and lots that didn't make the book!)but if your planning to be in the area it's well worth your while to check out this book.

Book Description
Learning history is remembered by many teachers as a passive process involving `learning dates.' In this book, the emphasis is on `doing history' - making sense of the past through the process of investigation as a true historian would. The authors argue that children should be involved in historical investigations, thus developing the skills and processes that underpin historical understanding. Each chapter is supported by exercises and activities which demonstrate how to translate theory into practice together with a specific focus on the problems of planning and resourcing to produce practical teaching strategies.

Do It Yourself Vegtable Garden.......2001-03-20
In the true tradition of do it yourself books created by Ortho this has to be its best. The book is geared for both beginners in gardening and the handy do it yourselfer types. Chapters progress you through the steps from site selection and plant selection to harvesting, crop rotating and soil conditioning over winter and indoor greenhouse seed starting. Its an A-Z book and should be the the only reference book (excluding seed catalogs) you really need. The book also contains references to various cultivars within vegtable species and handy suggested cooking guides, so a beginner gardener could not only successfully select and grow well know vegtables, but could also grow and use the odd often hard to find fresh herbs.
Great for cooks too.......2000-06-07
Beautifully illistrated the book starts with a complete garden guide that includes specifics on everything from choosing a garden site to the correct amount of light and water. Also covered in this section is data concerning soil, seasons, weeds, pests and problems. It then continues with a very comprehensive catalog of vegetables and herbs, each one containing precise straightforward details on planting, harvesting and cooking along with recipes and nutritional facts. Even if you're not interested in growing a garden, every cook should have this book. I use it as a resource when I am trying to choose the correct type of vegetable according to my recipe and taste buds or when looking up unfamiliar herbs that certain recipes may call for. A wealth of information, I use it to quickly and easly find answers to all my questions.
Book Description

Up-to-date and revised how-to information that gardeners can apply.
Ideas to incorporate edible crops into home landscapes and limited spaces.
A bounty of garden tips and timesavers help novice growers with selection and care.
Customer Reviews:
Advice for veggie growers.......2007-01-05
This book is great. Ortho really does a great job on their gardening books.
Lots of advice for growing vegetables in Summer, Spring and Fall. Full of information from prepping the garden and soil to harvesting. Information also on growing herbs. Very easy to understand. It also has lots of illustrations for those of us who like visuals.
All the basics in one place.......2006-10-30
If I had to recommend only one general guide to vegetable and edible gardening, this would be it. In addition to information on vegetables, this 224 page guide includes sections on planning your garden; herbs; fruits, berries & nuts; and dealing with pests & diseases.
In additon to a fairly standard encyclopedia of vegetables, I especially found the guide to pruning fruit trees, brambles (blackberries, raspberries, etc.), and grapes superior to any descriptions I've found elsewhere. The instructions are easy to read with useful diagrams that actually make sense. I've used the pruning advice to greatly increase my raspberry and grape harvest - much to the envy of my neighbors!
A good basic, no-nonsense kitchen gardening book.......2006-04-19
If the focus of your garden is vegetables or fruit, you need this book. Concise but informative, this book combines and updates three or four older books (some of which were hard to find in their original editions) by the same publisher into one handy, easily browsed book of techniques and varieties. The end result is a reference suitable for both beginners and experienced gardeners.
The book has four main sections: vegetables, herbs, temperate fruits, and tropical fruits. All sections are very well illustrated with mouth-watering photographs, and the techniques mentioned are illustrated decently well where they aren't well-described. A long list of seed producers is available in the back of the book, including URLs, and there's a whole chapter on seasons and how to take advantage of them. The tropical fruit section is particularly helpful for those in temperate zones who might wish to grow citrus or bananas.
If the book has a weakness it's the lack of mention of alternative gardening techniques. While a guide to basic hydroponics would be above and beyond the call of duty and information on biodynamics would be simply ridiculous, there is no section on organic gardening. It may be that it would expand the scope of the book somewhat unacceptably, but that's still a serious omission for a gardening book published in 2004. It's not a dealkiller though.
Overall, this is an excellent value for gardening books from a long-standing book series. If you can have only one book on vegetable gardening techniques, this is a strong contender.
Very complete and detailed.......2005-11-22
This helpful guide contains instructions for growing fruit and herbs as well as vegetables. It gives climate and soil requirements, and detailed growing instructions. It also discusses various species. This is the only vegetable gardening book I've come across that also includes extensive information on growing fruit, including all the major species that grow in the US, as well as semi-tropical species such as oranges for warmer climates. It even covers nut tress! The section on herbs is very large and complete. It even tells how to pollinate your own plants, when you have only a few. There are many excellent color pictures and illustrations. If you grow vegetables, fruit, or herbs, you need this book!

In Medicine Stories, Aurora Levins Morales writes lucidly about the complexities of social identity. Her lyrical meditations on ecology, children's liberation, sexuality, and history show how political transformation and personal healing are inextricably bound.
