5 out of 5 stars An excellent giftbook for ardent big game hunters.......2003-03-09

Filled with stunning full-color photography, Majestic Big Game: The Ultimate Tribute To North America's Greatest Game Animals compiles insightful and respectful essays by a variety of individual authors, about great game beasts, unforgettable personal experiences while on the hunt, respect for the power and grace of nature, and much more. The collaborative effort of the Editors of Voyageur Press, Majestic Big Game is a truly amazing showcase, and an excellent giftbook for ardent big game hunters. Also very highly recommended as companion titles from Voyageur Press are Majestic Whitetails (0896585409); Majestic Mule Deer (0896584135); and Majestic Elk (0896583848).

5 out of 5 stars Cool book!.......2001-05-23

I recommend this book to all kinds of outdoors lovers--anyone who ever loved Jim Kjelgard when you were a kid. The stories in here are really cool and interesting and span the continent. The audience isn't limited to hunters, though I think they'd especially appreciate the book. I particularly recommend the opening story by Rex Beach and the story by Rick Bass. Good stuff! And the photos are amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide.......2007-05-13

This guidebook has everything: maps, hotels and categories for everything a traveler needs. Unfortunately these guides no longer have titles like "The Grand Canyon on $5 a day."

5 out of 5 stars awesome guide.......2007-02-23

Perfect guide. Great reccomendations. I spent 6 days on both the north and south rims( I thought the north rim was so much better) and the book was helpful for both. it also contains info on places in northern Arizona. There is plenty of info, it is very detailed and descriptive. The size is small and can fit in a bag or a pocket. Great choice!!

5 out of 5 stars The best guide to the Grand Canyon.......2007-01-15

Wow this book was great! We recently used the book as our resource during our visit to the canyon. A few price listings were slightly off (by $1-$3) but this book gave us more information than anything available at the park. The information on different viewpoints (geographical points on the rim of the canyon) was wonderful and we knew more than anyone around us about what we were seeing.

The restaurant information was right on the nose, and the wildlife information was so accurate that by following the books information we were able to see and photograph a bighorn sheep!

This is the only guidebook you need to visit the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is an overwhelming place, vast in size, depth, beauty, and appreciative hordes. Alex Wells is passionate about the Canyon, and along with a wealth of useful information, he imparts his ardor for the 277-mile park, from the smallest ant lion to the impressive half ton elk. He details the best drives, views, and bike rides, where to watch for wildlife and whom to contact for raft trips, the best places to lodge, dine, picnic, and camp, how to get there, when to go, and what's available for visitors with disabilities, pets, or children. From South Rim to North Rim, getaway towns to backcountry trips, Wells covers camping, sports, the flora, fauna, and ecosystem comprehensively and clearly. Wells's guide gives perspective on the magnificence, delineates the options, and provides a handle on just what kind of visit you'd like to arrange, whether it's a quick rim view, a day hike, or a wilderness backpacking excursion. --Stephanie Gold

This guide provides all the information that you will need for an initial visit to the grand canyon. Both the North and South Rims are covered in some detail and although someone seeking a back-county guide may be disappointed, the average visitor should find more than enough material to plan and enjoy their visit.

Everything you always wanted to know about flyball including how to build most of the equipment at home.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed explaination of teaching through Back Chaining.......2004-08-05

This books gives directions for construction jumps, including a wonderfully simple "puppy jump", advice on solving problems (like getting a tight turn). She does sometimes seem to be relying on repetition to get your dog into the habit of what you want, but this would easily be used with clicker training to improve the time and reliability of these behaviors.
The most impressive part of this book though, was it's step by step detailing of how to teach your dog to run using BACK-CHAINING. She breaks the behavior into at least 12 different segments - starting with the last jump on the return and back-chains to the total run, including proofing the return to the 4th jump should your dog miss the ball and have to retrieve it before it's return run. (if you don't know what back-chaining is, check out Karen Pryor's clicker site - it's a GREAT learning tool)

2 out of 5 stars Vague and somewhat confusing.......1998-10-04

I read this book as someone already familiar with the sport of Flyball. I found that it was a general overview of the sport as opposed to a training manual that would help you to teach a dog to play flyball. The training advice is somewhat vague and dated. Current training techniques are mentioned, but not explained for a novice to understand. This book utilizes the old method of pattern training and does not go into teaching or proofing the elements of the course. I found the book Flyball Training: Start to finish to be a much more thorough and concise guide of great use to the novice or experienced enthusiast.

Collectors will cherish this full-color exploration of the tobacco tin. Over 1000 tobacco tins are illustrated in full color, revealing the designer's and the lithographer's art. The tobacco industry in America was at the forefront of modern advertising and among the first to try to instill brand identification and loyalty in their customers. Consequently many of these tins are eye catching and beautiful. This is one of the reasons they are such popular collectibles. This book is the first full color reference on tobacco tins, featuring clear photography and the highest quality reproduction. In addition, it contains advertising and other ephemera which help to give an overview of the industry's attempts to reach its customers. The size of the tin is given, as is the manufacturer when known. An up-to-date price guide is included.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for native planting.......2006-05-12

This is one of the most helpful books I've picked up recently. The beginning of the book lays out the geography, geology, and ecology of Tennessee, as well as the reasons behind using native plants in your landscape. The way the author described the state's heritage made me want to return things to natural in my own space.
She also points out a few of the invasive plants in the area and reasons to avoid them. I thought this section could have had more information though.
The remaining 2/3 of the book is lists of all the native wildflowers, shrubs, trees, and vines in Tennessee. It lists which sections of the state they are native to, there preferred growing conditions, whether they are easy to grow and transplant. Also included with each is a good color photograph, although many of the are kind of small and up close, so it's hard to decipher the full plant or its growing habit. I think I'll be doing a lot of research on the internet to find better pictures of the candidates for my garden.
The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 are 1) the pictures, as mentioned, and 2) I thought the cost of the book is a little high for what it is. Although if I had it to do over again, I would still pay the 23 bucks, because no other source that I know of has such a concise and complete list of this kind. Other states should be envious!

5 out of 5 stars Hunter deftly blends ecology, conservation, & horticulture .......2004-12-07

Margie Hunter was moved to write the book Gardening with the Native Plants of Tennessee: The Spirit of Place when she had a difficult time finding an easy, single source of information about her state's native plants.

Browsing through the book, you will see that, though it is written from the perspective of a Tennessee native, most of the plants featured are found throughout the Southeast. As Hunter notes in her introduction, "native plants recognize no such boundaries" as state lines.

I'll give you a brief tour of Hunter's book, and you will likely find, as I did, that it offers a wide and thorough mix of information that is organized in a logical and sensible manner. You will also see that it differs in some respects from many books in its class, and it is, in essence, a blend of ecology, conservation, and horticulture.

I found the first chapter unique for a book on plants. It is entitled "The Geography, Geology, and Soil of Tennessee." Here Hunter gives an overview of the physiographic regions of the state, including their geology, climate, and soils. It makes perfect sense to have such an introduction in a native plant book and makes me wonder why more authors have not thought of this. At the end of this and every chapter, Hunter provides a list of sources for further reading, which is quite useful if you want to continue your studies of a topic.

Hunter's second chapter logically follows by describing the plant communities of Tennessee. She begins by explaining that plant communities are the result of the five factors of climate, geologic history, topography, hydrology, and soil type. She also explains the different layers of the forest and the process of succession. Hunter then lists plants that will be found in the various plant communities of Tennessee (such as mesic forest, xeric forest, etc.). For the large part, this mirrors communities found throughout much of the Southeast.

As Hunter begins Chapter 3, she says, "All living things are interconnected," which is an appropriate start to this chapter on Tennessee wildlife. She gives a brief introduction on general ways to attract wildlife to the garden. Then she lists some of the fauna of Tennessee, including butterflies, moths, other insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.

Chapter 4 covers the rare and endangered plants of Tennessee and the pest plants that threaten our native plant diversity, with a good explanation of why these invasive plants are such a menace. Hunter helpfully includes a section describing what gardeners as consumers can do to protect endangered plants. Her advice includes how to avoid purchasing wild-collected specimens by looking for suspicious signs at the nursery. Some of the "red flags" she warns us to look for: large quantities of a species for sale; very low prices; bare-root plants; plants in real soil rather than potting soil; tree roots or rocks in the pot with the plant; large specimens for a low price; and plants that are difficult to propagate or slow growing.

The next chapter, "Native Plant Gardening," begins with brief tips on gardening with different categories of natives, such as ferns, grasses, and woody plants. Hunter includes a useful list of native plants that have performed well in trial gardens, which will surely be an aid to gardeners just beginning to employ natives. This chapter also includes some basic botany, such as an explanation of soil pH, the plant life cycle, and light requirements. Line drawings are used to illustrate basic flower parts, inflorescence types, and leaf structure.

Our tour of Hunter's book has thus far taken us about a quarter of the way into the book. The remainder (except for a few appendices) is a compendium of some 450 species of Tennessee's native plants, grouped by plant type: wildflowers; ferns; grasses, sedges, and rushes; vines; shrubs; and trees. Each plant is succinctly described and illustrated with a small color photo. Beyond the basic plant description that you would expect, Hunter also includes propagation methods, cultivation requirements, distribution patterns within Tennessee, and use by wildlife if applicable. Another plus is that she gives the pronunciation for each plant.

Hunter closes the book with several useful appendices, including nurseries that specialize in native plants, agencies and organizations of interest, botanical gardens, and native plant conferences.

Anyone interested in the botanical history of Tennessee (or for that matter, the surrounding states) will enjoy this exploration of the common plants of the Volunteer State. Crisply written and easy to understand, this delightful book should be a part of any nature library - even if you are non-gardener like me! Margie's enthusiasm and love for plants permiates every page and will leave the reader yearning for his or her own "spirit of place".

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for a gardener new to Tennessee.......2004-03-11

This is a lovely book. I'm an experienced gardener in England and my husband bought me this when we moved to Tennessee. It has given me the confidence to understand what I'm doing in this new climate, and to ensure that my efforts to 'improve' the land I garden here won't damage it.

The book has good detailed information on native plants and starting points for acquiring them.

Normally with a reference book on any subject, I would just dip into it as needed. This one I picked up and read cover to cover !

5 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook on Tennessee natives.......2002-12-03

On my first gardening day after purchasing Margie Hunter's book, I used it at least three times to make sure I had the right plant in the right growing conditions. Margie has managed to squeeze an amazing amount of information in a small space, using a very pleasing format. Her book, while providing excellent details, presents the information with a chatty, casual voice, as though one was getting advice from a neighbor with a very green thumb. The section on the geology of Tennessee was a delightful surprise for me with its explanation of the origin of the variety of soils within our state. My only criticism of the book is the size of the excellent photographs. While the handbook size of the book makes it easy to take to the garden for reference, these middle-aged eyes of mine find the small pictures a little disappointing. For Tennessee gardeners in particular, and mid-south gardeners in general, anyone interested in gardening with native plants will find this book to be a thorough, well-researched and enjoyable aid to their efforts.

                            Book Description

Patricia Stephens Due fought for justice during the height of the Civil Rights era. Her daughter, Tananarive, grew up deeply enmeshed in the values of a family committed to making right whatever they saw as wrong. Together, in alternating chapters, they have written a paean to the movement—its hardships, its nameless foot soldiers, and its achievements—and an incisive examination of the future of justice in this country. Their mother-daughter journey spanning two generations of struggles is an unforgettable story.

5 out of 5 stars Personal reflections of the ongoing "MOVEMENT".......2003-12-27

Mother and daughter Patricia Stephens Due and Tananarive Due have written a fascinating and revealing look at the struggle by African-Americans to gain equal rights. The elder Due tells of her involvement with the "movement" during the turbulent 60's. She introduces the readers to the many sit-ins, jail-ins, planning conferences, and brushes with the famous and not so famous. It is those "unknown" heroes that are the revelation here. Being a neighbor to nearby Tallahassee, FL (where much of the book's events occur), my eyes were opened to the significance of developments in that city to changes that would be made nationwide. Mrs. Due writes candidly and details her convictions, as well as the dedication of her fellow "marchers/protestors". Her contributions as an author and activist are commendable and necessary reading for those interested in the period.

Tananarive Due shares her upbringing in a house headed by such politically minded and socially active parents. By writing about her college days and beyond, she reminds us that things have not changed as much as they should since her mother and others trod the streets of Tallahassee. She cites the Miami riots of the 80's (the result of the senseless murder of a black motorcyclist), as well as other highly profiled instances of human abuses.

The book is an essential read, if only to appreciate the people that sacrificed so much to make this country accept its creed of being "one nation for all".

5 out of 5 stars Ode to the Unsung.......2003-04-16

"The workers opened the passenger-side door and carried out a very elderly Negro woman, who told us she was 109 years old. 'I was born a slave,' she announced. 'It's 'bout time I registered to vote.' ... (T)here were other people in Chattahoochee who wanted to register, including her ninety-year-old daughter, but they were afraid. 'They say if I come back alive, they'll come register too,' she said."

I first came across Tananarive Due in a work I have previously reviewed: "Dark Matter: A Century of Speculative Fiction from the African Diaspora," by Sheree R. Thomas. Having read Due's novels to date, I periodically check the library catalog for anything new, not expecting to find a non-fiction entry. I had no real idea of her biography or her background; I just knew I had found an author I like, who is definitely worthy of more attention than she has yet received.

This work, written in collaboration with her mother, Patricia Stephens Due, is excellent - start to finish. As the parent of several children in the public schools of lily-white Iowa, I see the yearly, compulsory, half-hearted "diversity studies." What this has come to mean is that every September, Martin Luther King, Jr. is beatified; every October, Christopher Columbus is reviled; every January, King is nominated for sainthood; and every February they do Black History Month, at which time it becomes okay to mention Rosa Parks or Harriet Tubman. At the end of it all, you can ask any student, black or white, about Ralph Abernathy, Thurgood Marshall, Medgar Evers, the SCLC generally, or CORE and all you will get is blank stares. They will have no idea who Bull Connor was and may have only a vague sense of recognition at the name of George Wallace. Tallahassee and St. Augustine: blank stares. Birmingham and Selma: nods of vague recognition.

If this book were made required reading in the high school curriculum (or at least anthologized portions of it), maybe a sense of the real struggles would stay alive. Not the struggles of white-against-black, but the struggles of activists (White and Negro)against the establishments (White and Negro), against fear, and against apathy. And, divisions within the movement itself.

Daughter and mother Due quickly brush aside the revisionist histories of a Civil Rights Movement under the omnipresent eyes of Dr. King - a monolithic structure pitting white against black. The reader is constantly reminded that the civil rights movement was really made up of the diverse activities of mostly unsung heroes (White and Negro) who gave of their lives, gave up their livelihoods, and gave their very lives to the cause of freedom. The reader is not allowed to believe that the struggle is over. Nor, is the reader permitted to forget that the issue was not and is not Black versus White; it is an issue of freedom and justice - for all.

Written in a comfortable, narrative style, it is nevertheless a scholarly look at the people and the times. The authors chose to use the the language of the times (thus, this reviewer's use of the word "Negro," dispite the fact that the term has fallen into disfavor among the politically correct). In their successful effort to place the reader in the middle of these turbulent years one gets the sense that these were times we should be proud of - at least for those of us who never accepted segregation and racial prejudice. This book tells the stories of civil rights activists so that the memories will not be lost in the current climate of sanitized political correctness. It is said of the Holocaust, "Never Forget!" It should be said of the civil rights activists, "Always Remember!"

5 out of 5 stars A Celebration of Unsung Heroes.......2003-02-03

Freedom in the Family by mother-daughter authors, Tananarive Due and Patricia Stephens Due, is an account of their family's involvement in the Civil Rights movement. Told in alternating chapters, the book recounts the contributions of their family, friends and supporters in an autobiographical format. Patricia Due carefully shares her personal family history as foundation for her motivation and attraction toward the principles of racial equality. She drew courage and strength from the examples her parents provided in daily life. She covers the fear, anxiety, blood, sweat, and tears that resulted from numerous sit-in's, freedom rides, marches, and rallies in such detail that I felt I had witnessed them myself. She shares her pain and dedication in heartfelt passages such as the loss of a baby during a voter registration project. Tananarive's viewpoint is that of a daughter living in the post-Civil Rights era. Her story recaps the difficulty of growing up in largely white neighborhoods and schools and of being ostracized by both blacks for being "too white" and whites for being "too black". The details of her struggle and childhood observations of her parent's lives are equally compelling as her mother's.

This novel is a wonderful history lesson that includes details that uncover the fortitude and determination of many unsung heroes. The personal sacrifices (suspension/expulsion from college, permanent physical injury, and death) of "everyday people" for the sake of justice are truly admirable and honorable.

For this reviewer, this book was particularly touching because Patricia goes into great detail about the forming of CORE and other noteworthy events happening at FAMU during the same era when my parents, aunts, and uncles attended. She also mentions events in other small towns in Florida where other members of my family lived, so key passages sparked a lot of memories --resulting in me getting a very personal slant on my family's viewpoints on the struggle while reading this book. This body of work is truly a labor of love and a great accomplishment for the Due family; one can only imagine the countless hours it took to pull it all together. It is an excellent memoir, a beautiful legacy, and a definite keepsake for me!
