Customer Reviews:
Not as good as Maui revealed.......2006-11-03
Maui Revealed was far better at pointing us in the right directions for "off the beaten path" activities and sights during our trip. Frommers Maui does have some helpful maps... but that was the extent of it's use for us.
Dissapointed.......2006-08-17
I should have followed other reviewers advice. I expected more from this brand name of book. If I had only read this book I'd have never wanted to explore many of these places. Luckily I also had a copy of Revealed and Maui Mile by Mile.
You'd Be Better Off With Another Book.......2006-06-14
This book was okay at best. First of all the pull out map is the worst I've seen. My husband and I decided to use it on our first day there - a highway pictured on the map showed a somewhat straight line going around one side of Maui. This road ended up being a one lane dirt road along the side of a sharp cliff with the most hairpin turn I've ever seen. Come to find out, most other Maui maps have a warning by this road for first time visitors telling them to be very cautious.
The layout of this book is horrible as well. Things were hard to find and I felt like I was in the index more than the actual book. We stayed near Pa'ia, and found that our Frommer's Maui mentioned several restaurants, but left out the amazing shops and the greatest grocery store on the island!
You'd be much better off buying Hidden Maui or Maui Revealed. When I finally ditched Frommers book and picked up one of the above mentioned, we were led to the most beautiful beach walk we've ever taken. These other books also not only tell you recommended places, but where not to go - which we wished we had know before hand. (FYI - don't visit the Enchanting Floral Gardens.)
Frommer's assumes that Maui is a well signed resort island - it's not. You need a book with more direction on how to actually find the beautiful spots on the island.
I wouldn't recommend this book.
Traveling to Hawaii? Get another book........2006-05-01
Generically written at best, Frommer's continues to fall short of its competitors in regards to Hawaii. This is the last time I'll purchase a Frommer's guide to any of the islands in Hawaii. The content is descriptive and thorough but the lack of illustrations and photographs makes the book rather dull and boring. Other books excell when Frommer's does not; as another reviewer hints at, don't waste your time with Frommer's unless you want a novel.
Maui.......2006-02-17

Thank You
Book Description
Write it in Arabic is an alphabet guide and workbook which offers a hands-on approach to learning Arabic. The book covers the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet, numbers, vowel marks and handwriting. This workbook includes plenty of examples that teach how to read and write the Arabic script, guides students through the pronunciation of each letter while introducing them to new vocabulary. This book opens from right to left, like any book printed in Arabic.
Customer Reviews:
It took me back to Kindergarten.......2007-05-25
I am trying to self learn Arabic and this book was so much fun. It is very basic which is what I needed. The book opens from right to left and forces you to write that way. First you trace the letters and learn the sounds and then you learn how to write on your own. There are several basic exercises that help with you with distinguishing the letters and sounds in words. This book doesn't get into semantics and linguistic explanations...thank God. It just gives you exactly what you need to know in a very basic way...as if you were in kindergarten. I agree that it might have been better if the book came with a cd but it was fun to use and is a great resource for beginners.
Great practice for writing!.......2005-05-27
I couldn't give this book five stars because it lacks CDs to accompany it, but it is GREAT for practicing your writing and learning some additional vocabulary and/or reviewing some of the words you learn on the way. I recommend this as a supplement for writing practice, NOT as something you get to begin learning MSA (Modern Standard Arabic). I will keep coming back to this book throughout my first year to practice my writing with the exercises it provides. Good book for starting but BEWARE it has no CD and some sounds in Arabic NEED to be hear in order to learn!
Overall I highly recommend this book for beginners to practice their writing and pick up/review some vocabulary words. No real grammar included, the writer stated that this book was not designed to be a thorough introduction to MSA but guide to writing and reading Arabic.
Book Description
Evoke the bold, elegant streamlined Art Deco style with this collection of dynamic fonts. Lampoon, Chic, Parisian, Publicity Gothic, many more. Most alphabets include both upper- and lower-case letters, numerals and punctuation. One CD-ROM and book. 24 black-and-white fonts.
Customer Reviews:
You're sure to like these fonts.......2006-12-01
Dan Solo had a huge collection of great old and new type faces. You'll find 24 of them here. Some, you might already have, and some are so nice that I believe if you find one gem here, it makes the price worthwhile. The fonts are in both Windows True Type and Macintosh formats. The pages have the complete alphabets and a character chart. Be sure to notice the "extra characters" that are offered in some fonts.
No more than OK.......2000-04-25
This volume did not have the pizzaz the Victorian fonts book had. Modernique, Plaza Suite, Clyde are interesting. If you have Broadway (or B'way Engraved), Futura Black (or Braggadocio) on your machine that should suffice. My Broadway has better kerning than these Dover ones also: test was "VA" overlap. All in all we've seen better. Still looking forward to the next book though!
Book Description
When Loretta Gage entered her first year of training at Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, all the odds were against her. In addition to the tremendous pressures that her fellow classmates faced - brutally long hours, a rigorous load of lecture and laboratory classes, and the knowledge that many of them would not graduate - Gage brought with her the enormous emotional and financial challenges of a working-class upbringing. If Wishes Were Horses is the triumphant story of her struggle against hard work and self-doubt to become a practicing veterinarian. This memorable and heartwarming book envelops readers from the very first page, transporting them to a world filled with curmudgeonly professors, classroom disasters, and academic break-throughs, as well as many joyful and inspiring episodes involving the wounded and sick animals that come into the students' lives as they learn their trade. In addition to tales from the classroom, emergency room, and hospital barn where the students made daily rounds, Gage shares her battles with the moral and ethical implications of her work. The rich and gripping story of her struggle to fulfill a lifelong dream illuminates the triumph of the human spirit as much as the fascinating, often heartrending world of veterinary medicine.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful story-- and true!.......2004-03-03
I loved this book! It doesn't try to skim over the tough parts of vet school or the ethical, financial, and professional conflicts both in school and after one becomes a practicing vet. I believe in animal rights, and I find some of the things in this book horrific, but they do not detract from this story... they give it more of a ring of truth.
If you are really sqeamish, I wouldn't recommend this book, but otherwise, especially if you are/will be/would like to be a veterinarian!
It's just not this awful!.......2002-09-26
I read this book before starting veterinary school and it terrified me with its accounts of sleepless nights, failed relationships, nonsensical classes and cruel professors. Now that I'm in vet school, I wish I'd never read this book before starting!
This may have been an accurate portrayal of how vet school was for her, but I don't think it's an accurate portrayal of how it is for most people. She's right about financial stress, having huge amounts of info thrown at you, and having to study a whole lot and give up a lot of your social life. But my profs are by and large friendly, I don't study every free minute, and half my class is married, engaged, or partnered, including me! I still find time for the important people in my life and most of us generally get a reasonable amount of sleep!
She emphasizes the negatives and leaves out the positives. I think vet school have changed since her day, at least the one I'm at. And the veterinary profession is changing too. So -- don't assume that your experience will be like hers.
I Loved This Book!.......2001-09-28
There is so much to this little book. I laughed, I cried, I squirmed, I was inspired. Loretta Gage tells the truth about what a student must go through in order to become a vet - especially what is involved in learning to work with living animals. These are things most of us don't think about when we consider our vets' educations. I have a new respect for both my large and small animal vets from having read this book, and I recommend it to friends who are considering this profession. This book also shows that the only real obstacles to changing course in midstream are the ones we put there ourselves.
a source of great inspiration for mature students.......2001-07-28
as a 40-plus student hoping to gain entry into veterinary medicine, this book has provided great inspiration. I hope I won't encounter the same problems that the author did but if I do then I shall be better prepared after reading this book.
compelling and real.......2001-07-14
As a practicing veterinarian for over 20 years I view this book as the most honest and courageous to address this profession. It breaks the rules and debunks the simplistic mythology that pervades the profession. By shattering the illusions that many cling to in their unrealistic and romantic views of the complex relationships with our pets and the educational process, she understandably will offend some. That simplistic dream world needs breaking. This book was given to me by clients as a token of appreciation after a gruelling situation ultimately resulted in the euthanasia of their dog. This gift moved me greatly and reinforced my strength to face new challenges. Rather than finding the truth telling depressing it heartened me to find a veterinarian brave enough to reveal that we are as human as anyone, have lives with ambiguities, doubts, personal tragedies and diversions, like anyone else, and yet continue to face uncertain days regularly with committment, hope, dedication, and optimism.

Customer Reviews:
Food For Thought.......2002-01-16
Excellent for beginning to think about stonework, how to use it in your landscape, what it might look like..
It reflects the author's environmental/Japanese garden point of view, which is really an organic way of looking at landscaping in general.
Interesting to read, not many pictures [a few illustration] - a little dry in terms of food for fantasy...
and not really a how-to book for people who haven't done some fairly complex projects before.
But if you want to do some research on stone in the landscape this should be part of your process.
It Rocks!.......1999-04-13
After an interesting world-wide overview of famous rock structures, the authors show you how to use rocks to create balance, depth, and interest in your gardenscape. I love the contrasting factor of the rocks with plants. It adds a great deal of enhancement to even the commonest of botanicals. Linda Fry Kenzle, author of Gathering

Book Description
This book is a study of the Ion of Euripides. Produced in a period of intense political crisis at Athens in 412 BC, this play went to the heart of Athenian self-perception but also highlighted the violent divine grace of Apollo, the intense emotional suffering of Kreousa, and Ion's insistent search for truth despite divine concealment. Informed by recent scholarship on Athenian ethnicity, this study shows how autochthony (claim to being earthborn) and Ionianism (Ionian character of Athens) are conceptually related with Apollo, father of Ion and god of the Delphic oracle where the play is set. Through careful analysis of the political, psychological, religious and poetic aspects of the play and use of modern critical theory, the Ion emerges as a polyphonic work expressing different and converging truths.

Customer Reviews:
Thanks to the author, we are "farther along.".......2001-04-06
This good man acted on his good intentions. He was both a general and a foot soldier in the fight for the civil rights of all. This book brings his story to life and lets us know how his efforts impacted both his neighborhood and his family. The world is a better place because Marvin Caplan lived in it.
We remember, we were there.......2000-04-24
It is always nostalogic fun to read about one's contemporaries. It is always rewarding to read an account that you know rings true. We will all remember and honor Marvin for the leadership he provided for all of us.
Here's the everday life of a wise civil rights devotee........1999-09-22
In his engaging autobiography, Marvin Caplan describes the daily life of a devoted civil rights worker. Not the exploits of a famous leader in the struggle, this is, nevertheless, an important story by a man who has simply lived an uncommonly decent life. Mr. Caplan is a wise man as well as a felicitious writer.
A warm, inciteful autobiography of a civil rights activist........1999-09-19
Farther Along is a wonderfully written autobiography of a non-commissioned officer in the great civil rights wars of the latter half of the twentieth century. In completely personal terms the book describes the journey of a Jew who spent his productive years fighting to remove barriers to equality and prosperity for African-Americans in America. The book is full of endearing humility, perspectives, and insights into civil rights battles and life in general.
