This guide helps you with descriptions so vivid you can almost feel the breeze and smell the hibiscus, plumeria, and orchids. - All kinds of accommodations, including luxury resorts, a fanciful Moorish palace on the sand, a room with an open-air lava-rock shower, a tropical beach cottage, and more
- Great places to surf, scuba dive, or snorkel
- Golfing on championship courses with ocean vistas so magnificent it’s hard to keep your eye on the ball
- Reveling in nature and seeing teeming rainforests, volcano craters, spectacular waterfalls, and, of course, some the world’s most beautiful beaches
- Driving the “Heavenly” road to Hana on Maui, exploring the Allerton Gardens on Kauai, or paying homage to the past at Pearl Harbor on Oahu
- Where to start the day with a fresh papaya and a cup of robust Kona joe, enjoy a luau feast, indulge your passion for sushi or fresh island fish, or try family-style dining with a Hawaiian flavor
- Going whale-watching or taking the plunge and getting up close and personal with colorful reef fish, octopuses, sea turtles, and playful spinner dolphins
- Taking a helicopter tour for a bird’s-eye view of desolate mountain peaks, volcano craters, and each island’s unspoiled heartland

Customer Reviews:
Frommers is better.......2007-08-27
I bought hawaii for Dummies and Frommers Hawaii. Haven't gone on the trip yet, but I find myself trusting the Frommers information more than the Dummies info. I even got a few tips from Frommers that saved us $80 on helicopter tours that weren't mentioned in Dummies. We're taking a cruise around Hawaii, and neither book gives you information about how to get around from the cruiseship ports which would have been really helpful.
Hawaii Simplified.......2007-08-04
Dear John: Letters From a Fan in New York City: An Interactive BookWhen you go to Hawaii for the first time (as I did last year to reward myself for three years of writing and no vacation) you want to make sure you know where to start. There is no better book than the Hawaii for Dummies to take along with any other book on Hawaii which is more specific.
This is a place to start, before you even book your trip. Read it from cover to cover a while before you go, and take it with you, too.
Most of the 'must-sees' are right on. Gives you a road map, before embarking on your chosen islands and itineraries.
Hawaii for Dummies.......2007-05-07
Very helpful and fun. Planning our first trip and everything we need seems to be there and easily understood and accessed.
Great for attractions, beaches, maps; OK for dining.......2007-05-07
Liked that the book had the post it's that I could move from island chapter to chapter. Liked that I had good maps for each island in one book. Saw a few other tourists with the same book and all had positive things to say.
Restaurants I tried were ok; not great. But the prices are higher here than the mainland so I didn't go to many upscale places like normal. I ended up asking the conceirge for recommendations which were better and not in the book.
However, the attractions and beaches were spot on. All great. And the advice on where to stop was excellent. If we had stopped at every "lookout" point or "scenic" stop, we would have never seen anything. I decided to go to one waterfall that wasn't in the book and was disappointed after seeing Akaka Falls which was recommended.
Best Hawaii travel book.......2007-03-25
My husband and I travel often and I always rely on the Dummies travel books to give me the information I need to plan our trips. They have never let me down. They are straightforward, very well organized and laid out, and they even give you some Post-It flags to mark your favorite pages. The books include tips, heads up, bargain alert, kid friendly, best of the best, and local know how symbols in the left margins to highlight certain information. They also use a larger font than the other travel books, which I truly appreciate. The Hawaii For Dummies book really helped me to plan our trip and the numerous maps throughout the book were especially beneficial.

Customer Reviews:
It's ok.......2007-03-15
I have both this book and Revealed and by far I recommend the Revealed book. This book is ok to use as a companion guide with Revealed, but I did not find it nearly as helpful. I mainly bought the Dummy book to see if I could get a different point of view about sites, restuarants, etc. and I did in some cases, but I will be using the Revealed book as my main guide when I go back to Maui this year.
Needs an update.......2006-11-04
The book seems a couple of years old (although it says it's published in 2005). There are certain places that have moved or closed. However, the general idea of the book is to familiarize you with Maui which I thought it fulfilled the overall purpose. There are great tips which I corroborated with locals including good snorkeling spots, best snorkel gear, best luaus, restaurant, shops, etc. It lists out the places you SHOULD go while in Maui and suggests what to avoid and refuse. This is my first Dummies travel book and I plan to use future Dummies along with the current year's Frommer's for updated info. By the way, Cakewalk in Paia....no longer there.
Not bad, Maui Revealed Much Better.......2006-03-27
This is a pretty decent book, with some good information and tips on the island. The post it not tabs are nice to mark information you want easy access to. Some of the icons (heads up, kid friendly etc) are also helpful. Beware - there is some word for word duplication with the Frommers book.
For anyone traveling to Maui, this is a decent resource. But the ultimate is Maui Revealed.
Very informative..........2006-02-01
Loved getting a bit of "history" along with what to do and what to see! You'll get a better feel for the island with this book. Very detailed (right down to the best roadside stand to buy fruit at on the road to Hana). We love this book....it will be our "bible" when we go...
Very informative..........2005-04-23
I really liked this book. I read it from cover to cover. It gave me information about what to see and where to go and places to eat and the cost of each. I am going to Maui for the first time and have already booked some of the things we will be doing because the phone numbers are in the book. Believe me, I will be taking this book with me for reference.
Book Description
This standard grammar book of biblical Aramaic, used by students at many seminaries and universities, is the only one to include graded exercises at the close of each of its twenty lessons.
Customer Reviews:
way over my head, but it looks thorough.......2007-08-06
i was glad to discover this book at such a great price.
i'm sure it's a valuable collection to one's semetic languages library.
however, it uses Hebrew Script when i was hoping for Syriac, and skips over grammatical constructions one should have learned in Biblical Hebrew class.
i'll need this someday, but - for now - i'm going looking for a syriac text, or something that starts with the alphabet... any suggestions?
A Helpful Book That Needs Help.......2007-07-03
This book assumes that one trying to study Aramaic already knows Hebrew. If you know Hebrew then this book is pretty easy to follow. The one thing that is lacking is an answer key for the assignments. James N. Jumper has an annotated key that makes up for this deficiency and I strongly recommend it.
Short and to the Point.......2007-06-28
This book is a wonderful introductory grammar for Biblical Aramaic. It gives you everything you need to know, and doesn't overwhelm the reader. Charts, vocab, grammar, all in one very small book at a great price! Any Biblical Hebrew student should get this book to strengthen their understanding of Hebrew and semetic languages.
Serious Aramaic.......2006-08-15
The only book to get at this time if you are a serious student of Aramaic. It supports rigorous, authoritative grammatical and linguistic explorations of the subject.
Valuable for Study.......2004-05-27
This Grammar is apparently quite good as it is still used after so many years in print. It is especially useful in seminary courses or for individual study because of the exercises which follow each chapter. My only criticism is that the grammar does not provide answers for those exercises. Thankfully, an annotated answer key has finally been produced, so the two volumes together are an excellent resource.
Customer Reviews:
A Much Needed Companion to John's Book.......2007-07-03
This book makes up for the one key deficiency in John's Grammar which is that it lacks an answer key. Jumper gives more than answers in this book. He explains how the answers were arrived at and he also provides alternatives. Anyone using John's Grammar needs this book.
A Necessary Supplement.......2004-05-27
Jumper's Answer Key provides what has been lacking for decades. As Alger Johns's Grammar has been an excellent resource for the study of biblical Aramaic, it offers the student helpful exercises without a full explanation of the answers. That is where Jumper meets the reader's need. By offering answers to Johns's exercises along with thorough annotations, he provides information which is invaluable to the student desiring a full explanation of the methods for interpretation of each exercise. The cross-referencing to Johns's book is very useful. One text should not be used without the other!
Jumper's Annotated Key to Johns's Aramaic Grammar.......2003-12-16
As one who teaches Aramaic annually, I can attest that Johns's "A Short Grammar of Biblical Aramaic" is a quick, efficient way to learn biblical Aramaic well. Yet its exercises contain practice sentences that are purposely very challenging, and therefore can be offputting to students. James Jumper has put together, with the permission of the publishers (Andrews University Press), a clearly annotated key to all the exercise sentences in Johns' grammar, de-mystifying those sentences and adding a lot of helpful comments and grammar reminders in the process.
Johns's grammar has some real advantages for learning Aramaic. For example, it takes seriously the proto-semitic reflexes for virtually all forms (great for those interested in comparative Semitic grammar, but not necessary for using the book to learn Aramaic). It also treats the Peil as a separate conjugation, which is certainly how native speakers in OT times understood it, however certain modern grammarians may "theorize" about its role.
Jumper's "Key" makes Johns's grammar more accessible than ever -- a real gain for Aramaic students. I think that anyone who uses Johns's Grammar would find it advantageous and time-saving to purchase Jumper's Key along with it.
Douglas Stuart, Ph.D.

I just wanted to have a book of motifs that can be used without coloring. however, all of the motifs are black and white. So if you want ready to use motifs, the book is not suitable for you.

A March 2007 Significant 7 Editors' Pick: Not since Fight Club have a I read a book that sizzled with such fierce originality and searing vision as Steven Hall's electrifying debut novel, The Raw Shark Texts. It's a twisting, trippy thriller that tears through the landscape of language, revealing the lurking terrors uncovered in every letter of the written word. Steven Hall swims in the same surreal waters as pop-culture pioneers David Lynch and Michel Gondry, and The Raw Shark Texts deserves to be shelved somewhere between Trainspotting and Life of Pi. It pulls you under like a riptide, leaving you exhausted, exhilarated, and gasping for air.
But don't just take our word for it. We asked Audrey Niffenegger, one of the most creative contemporary writers working today, to share with readers her take on Steven Hall's debut novel, The Raw Shark Texts. Check out her exclusive Amazon guest review below. --Brad Thomas Parsons
Guest Reviewer: Audrey Niffenegger
Audrey Niffenegger is a professor in the Interdisciplinary Books Arts MFA Program at the Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts. A visual artist, she shows her artwork at Printworks Gallery in Chicago. The Time Traveler's Wife, her first novel, was an international bestseller and was one of Amazon.com's Best Books of 2003. It won several awards and is being made into a major motion picture. Her visual novels, The Three Incestuous Sisters and The Adventuress, were recently published by Harry N. Abrams. Miss Niffenegger is currently hard at work on her second novel, Her Fearful Symmetry, a ghost story set in London's Highgate Cemetery.
Eric Sanderson has lost his memory, his girl, his life as he once knew it. His pre-amnesiac self is sending him letters, a sort of correspondence course on how to be Eric Sanderson. Unfortunately, this previous self didn't really have it all together either. This is too bad, because the source of all the trouble is a conceptual shark, a Ludovician shark, no less. Soon Eric is on the run, trying to piece it all together and find true love before his mind gets wiped by the shark for the twelfth and probably final time.
Steven Hall is an inventive, funny and extremely smart writer. I am a letterpress printer and a typophile, and I was drawn to his book because of the typography: The Raw Shark Texts is riddled with typographic games, codes, a flip book, and a boatload of very elegant plot devices that hinge on collisions between the Information Age and the imagination. At one point Eric and Scout, his guide/love interest, are speeding away from the conceptual shark on a motorbike. Scout eludes the shark by exploding a letter bomb, a bomb made out of old metal type; the type diverts the shark into a stream of random letterforms. At this I practically fell off the couch with admiration.
There's plenty to groove on in The Raw Sharks Texts even if you're not a type maven. There's echoes of Cyberpunk, Borges, Auster; there is adventure on the high seas, lost love, an exploration of what it means to be human in the age of intelligent machines. The Raw Sharks Texts is huge fun, and I gleefully recommend it. --Audrey Niffenegger

Collectable Clocks, 1840-1940: Reference and Price Guide.......2000-05-30
If you are interested in buying antique clocks this is the book to find all the information. Finally not a book about museum-pieces but about clocks that are in reach for everyone. The book is divided in chapters about different sorts of clocks like bracket-clocks, alarm-clocks etc. A good book to find out more about your grandma's clock.

Book Description
For the indoor plant hobbyist, intermediate orchid grower, or anyone simply "mad about masdevallias," this is a first complete reference to these collectible orchids. An inspiring tribute to their beauty and a practical guide to their care, the book offers detailed advice on all aspects of culture. For those enthusiasts who are up to a challenge, chapters on propagating, showing, and registering masdevallias are also included.
Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-01-06
A great book for anyone interested in growing Masdevallias, regardless of skill / experience. There's plenty of useful tips in the cultural descriptions that go with each species photo, and I learned that they're a much more diverse genera than I had imagined. Many can also tolerate surprisingly cool temperatures (useful for me in the Netherlands), although those that can tolerate warmer temperatures are also covered, as are some common hybrids. The photos are excellent and the layout is pretty good too (species are grouped alphabetically, I would prefer by subgenera). The section describing the geography of each country where they occur is interesting, but too general to be of any real use (how many Masdevallias occur in the Peruvian desert?). Orchids don't recognize country boundaries, it would IMHO have been better to focus this section on the different microclimates in the geographical areas where they do occur (e.g. the Andes between 800m and 3500m). These minor details aside, this is a great book and good value.
Masdevallias: Gems of the Orchid World.......2006-11-03
I can't say enough positive things about this book. The wisdom of some of the top masdevallia growers was sought out and compiled in one place. Excellent photos, solid text, and a useful list of the top growers and contact information for them. I was able to reach two of the top growers who live in my area and find out what orchid shows they would be attending. That allowed me to expand my collection with some awesome new plants. Buy this book, you won't regret it.
Fantastic book!.......2006-02-25
This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in Masdevallias or those who love orchids in general. I feel this book fills a long standing void of books dedicated to the genus Masdevallia. The book contains detailed information on the history, natural distribution, cultivation, taxonomy of the subgenera, as well as information on propagation and showing masdevallias. There are 100's of beautiful photographs of the many species with information for each species photographed. There is also a section on hybridisation accompanied with many more colour photographs. I believe this book will be a longstanding 'Bible' to the genus for years to come. Highly recommended.
Great Book on Masdevallias.......2006-01-29
This is a great refence book for growers of Masdevallias, it is easy to read and it has up to date information. Thanks Mary Gerritsen and Ron Parsons for all of the work that you put into this book.

Excellent Resource.......2005-11-14
This is an excellent resource on this species. The pictures are great and the information on care and history is very valuable. I've been growing Masdevallias for a few years and I still learned more about them from this book.
