Frommer Has a Winner Here.......2005-12-24
I hate most of the Frommer Travel books. They take the fun out of travel and have very few photos.
This book is different. Here they came up with something very useful and novel for the traveller. When you go on a cruise normally you do not have a clue. You just follow what your travel agent recommmends. But anyone that has taken an extended cruise or two knows there are big differences betweeen boat lines and routes etc.( I like Holland America myself). So here is a nice review of what boats and crusies are available, it describes the boats, and where they go and what you can expect including on board entertainment. All great stuff.
Highly recommend 4 or 5 stars. Buy before you talk to the travel agent.

Doesn't include the Bahamas!!.......2006-08-13
Buyer beware--those looking for a one-stop reference to help choose a place in the Carribean to vacation had better look elsewhere. I bought this book for that very reason and found that somehow the Bahamas didn't make it into the list of Carribean islands, despite being included in every travel site's list of Carribean island destinations. While the information included is fine, the fact that I have to now buy another guide to get info on the Bahamas makes this book of little value for the money.

The study of emergency management is inevitably the study of words and of those elements of language that act like words. Emergency managers, to a degree that may exceed the practice of many other managers, depend on words to standardize performance, communicate information and decisions, describe situations, etc. However, our meanings often differ from place to place and document to document, making the management and interpretation of information difficult. In 2000 the State and Local Emergency Management Data Users Group (SALEMDUG) initiated an effort to identify standard emergency management terms and their meanings as the basis for data and information management at the state and local level. This project is intended to appear in three phases. The first phase, this volume, is a list of acronyms in current or prior use in civil defense and emergency management, at the local, state, national, and international levels. Acronyms are possibly one of the most transitory features of language. They may appear only in one publication and never be used again. Some survive only as long as the program or agency they describe survives and then fade into obscurity. Many are used only in one country, state, local jurisdiction, or enterprise. Others become accepted as words in their own right and have been widely used for decades. This volume attempts to provide a reasonably broad sampling of emergency management and business continuity acronyms in use from the establishment of Civil Defense in the United States in 1941 to date.

I was very anxious to receive my book on Bansenji's.
We have a one year old Bansenji named Sadie....she is completely different than any dog we have ever had....very sweet....but also very stubborn.....the book was very helpful in learning more about this breed of dog....very useful in training her and myself. i would recommend this book to anyone who has a basenji or are thinking of getting one....lots of very helpful, useful suggestions and great photos as well.

After 30+ years breeding, showing and now judging the Basenji breed, we were delighted to discover this wonderful book! Basenjis are an unusual breed, and prospective owners need to learn a great deal before they get one. This book puts into words all the things you need to know (and which Basenjis have taught many owners over the years). . . . . We are unfortunately no longer breeding, but do recommend that anyone interested in the breed study this book cover to cover before they purchase a dog.

Not a good buy..........2007-07-18
I recently bought this book expecting to find out all that wasn't accessible online, only to find that it doesn't really say much. The author owned many basenjis, and knew about as much as I did after a few minutes of google searching the basenji. Check out My Smart Puppy, its a general book but its the only thing that I can say relates to, and has helped me with my basenji, Simone.

A true wealth of information on the amazing Basenji breed. The book provided a concise history of the dog and its migration to other parts of the world. My only complaint is that the pictures were not in color only b&w. Still worth the purchase price. If you are lucky enough to own a Basenji, buy the book. Thinking about owning a Basenji, buy the book and read another. Basneji's are truly unlike any other dog and deserve a person who knows, accepts and appreciates their distinct differences.

This book is sure to delight everyone, from people who breed and show basenjis to the owner of the cherished pet.
A long established breed originating from Africa, the basenji is indeed a distinctive dog. Basenjis have deeply wrinkled foreheads, double curls in their tails, clean themselves like cats, run like antelopes and yodel instead of bark. They can also shed tears. Basenjis are known for their determination, loyalty to their owners and their keen hunting ability. Their cleanliness, natural beauty and gracefulness make them cherished pets indeed.
This book is a good teaching tool for folks who own basenjis, a good resource tool for folks interested in basenjis and certainly a well written wealth of information.

very basic.......2007-03-21
This is an extremely basic book, more of a booklet/pamphlet but with pretty pictures. It's sort of on the line with "this is a fir, this is a spruce, this is a pine." Still, it's kind of fun to look at, and to see what specimens they've chosen to represent a species. But if I saw this book in a bookstore, I probably wouldn't have bought it, even on sale. I want something more extensive.

Hmmm...........2004-10-18
Some of these stories appeared in the "Supertoys Last All Summer Long" collection; unfortunately, this book is hard to read because there is nothing that grabs the reader like a Robert Heinlein, Stephen King, or Ray Bradbury story...
The pacing is slow, and after you read(if you happen to reach the end) of the story, you wonder: "What was the point?"
Stanley Kubrick has said of Aldiss' writing that it is "Brilliant to not so good."
Stick with the "Supertoys" trilogy (which happens to be in his other short story collection)...or better yet, rent it from a library. Buying the book would probably take up too much space...

"When the opportunity has been presented the black bourgeoisie has exploited the Negro masses as ruthlessly as have whites. As the intellectual leaders in the Negro community they have never dared think beyond a narrow opportunistic philosophy that provided a rationalization for their own advantages. Although the black bourgeoisie exercise considerable influence on the values of Negroes they do not occupy a dignified position in the Negro community."
Clearly a controversial study by a Howard University sociologist regarding an elite group within the then African American community and their emergence as an phenomenon. The study taking place from the mid 1800`s to the 1950`s shows how this community was developed after their conquering and subsequent enslavement. The elite started out as mostly the offspring of the masters, moved on to be educated in substandard schools, then onto businesses that didn't amount to much and into political areas wear they commanded no power. In other words the whole community was emasculated and their deeds were not respected by whites nor by the blacks for whom they did not want to associate. As a consequence according to the author, "the very existence of a separate Negro community with its own institutions within the heart of the American society is indicative of its quasi-pathological character" as it `struggles to gain acceptance by whites'. The author makes points that are dead on, and apply to the mereade of characters that we associated with today.
Unfortunately today many of this select group have morphed into varying degrees of mental illness from (ward, tiger, orenthal, clarence) to the average affirmative action professional, with little changes in the behavior of the petit bourgeoisie....

When I became a thinker and was searching for knowledge (Thanks to rappers like Chuck D, X- Clan and BDP) about truth, one of the first books I read was E. Franklin Frazier's Black Bourgeoise. It inflamed passions then as does now of the black elite (and middle class) who he felt were inffectual and were more concerned about their own personal glory than about the race's moblity. Fraizer traces the history of the black middle and upper class trajectory through the 1950's, It may sound dated but since Cosby's tirade two years ago and his 'call out'tours and other black intellectuals and writers critiques on the black poor's behavior and their failure to curtail it (mainly because black america is divided by class even more than since segregation) makes this book even more relevant. You will be amazed as the more things change they remain the same a black upper and middle class who has great racial self- hatred towards themselves and the black poor.

I agree with most of what Mr. Franklin wrote in his book. Black people had a different kind of criteria for those that they called upper/ middle class. And in most cases it is still the same today. Sure there were a few truly upper/middle class people in our race when this book was written. But the bundle that made up the Black upper/middle class were ordinary everyday people. Postmen, pullmen porters, butlers in the white folks house were all a part of the Black upper/middle class. These guys sometimes had wives who were school teachers. So that threw them in the upper/middle class basket too. We were nothing like the white people who had real money. The white girls who are introduced to society at formal balls are from families with lots of money.They also come from genarations of class and refinement. And that might have been and still might be that way with the black girls in cities like Washington, D. C., New York City, New Orleans, and places like that. But here in savannah the word debutant has/had a different meaning. As many as possible with a measure of money and class were asked to be debutants. The majority of the girls really had no business trying to be presented into society in such a formal way. They had no money and no real status. Some went off to work in white people's houses to send themselves to college. Their parents were servants in white peoples homes and other jobs along those lines. But the girls themselves were chosen based on skin color, popularity, looks, and a list of other things. The whole thing has taken a turn though. Girls are not interested in that sort of thing anymore. In E. Franklin Frazier's book I ran across several things that the Negro race recognized as greatness. An example is found the following scenerio. Honor was given to a Negro servant who had his picture painted by a famous artist. Not only was the Negro praised. He was also featured as an example of a Negro in the world of art. That makes me think about the college girl who worked at Burger king. Not only did she help pay for her schooling. She saved money to purchase her gown for the debutant's ball. Imagine that. Working at Burger king and rushing home to get ready to be presented to society. Joe Lewis, Bill Bojangles Robinson, and even numbers kings rubbed elbows with the so called elite Black people in our race. Do you think whites of that sort ran in circles with the upper class whites? The Black businesses are no longer a myth. Earl Graves, John Johnson, A. G. Gaston and many others have proven that Black people can maintain businesses. The Black Bourgeoisie is a must have. I can certainly appreciate having it in my library. This book and Gerri Major's The Black Society are major resources for those who want research the Black upper/middle class.

From the supplier: Sociologist E. Franklin Frazier was noted for his work on the African American family and for 'Black Bourgeoisie,' his landmark exploration of the African American middle class. Frazier's early views were those of idealism and social responsibility, but he became increasingly pessimistic in his assessment of the middle class.
