An Excellent Addition to the Field.......2000-04-24
We have long needed this book. Historically, most texts have either concentrated on describing the natural history of venomous organisms or the medical implactions of envemonations (a noteable exception is the excellent contributions by Halstead). This book provides a great deal of biological informtion about toxic marine organisms and then combines this with the latest information about medical treatments for envenomations. In addition, this book also contains an excellent reveiw and classification for cnidae, which I have personally been looking for for a while. I honestly can't say enough about this text. Although this book is not really for the layman (you won't find much in the way of popularized accounts of injuries), it is an EXCELLENT text for specialists.

Best guide to an incredible world of volcanoes, rainforests, and wonderful souls.......2007-04-29
When I first headed to the Andes in 1997, an early edition of the book was my guide, and it guided me to my dreams. this new edition has led me to some great off-the-gringo trail gems in Venezuela and Brasil, where I recently was traveling. I'm very impressed with its improved thoroughness, commentary on history and culture, and highlights of special places off the beaten track. Each different travel guide has some recommendations that are better than another's, or worse, but compared to the others, I think this LP is the most consistently right-on. If you're looking for a guidebook to point you in the right directions in south america, and you're traveling on a shoestring, which is often the best way, this is one of the strongest editions available.
I will disclaim with pride that Thomas Kohnstamm (a collaborator on this book) is a companero mio ever since we both were both getting our masters in latin american studies, and he has since developed into such a strong travel writer, with a fantastic novel about travel writing to be published in 2008.
And if you are headed for that land of magical imagination, I recommend reading one of its greatest poets and personals, one of the world's greatest poets, as Gabriel Garcia Marquez called him, "the greatest poet of the 20th Century--in any language." Through his verse, you will appreciate the continent, its people, its tierra, its culture, on an even more profound level as your heart is stirred by the Chilean's lyricism. Please check out The Essential Neruda: Selected Poems, as well as redpoppy dot net, a non-profit dedicated to furthering Pablo's commitment to humanitarianism and spreading his poetry around the globe.

Practical but imperfect travel guide.......2007-04-21
This is a useful if flawed guide for backpackers and other budget travelers. This thick book (1,150 Pages) covers lodging, conditions, airports, regulations, and other vital information for 13 countries. The information is practical, useful, and substantial, and one can travel South America with this guide. But in trying to cover 13 countries the book is unavoidably limited on information for any one nation, city, or place, and the maps are at times less than adequate. There is also some out-of-date information (Argentina's Peso is NOT equal to one U.S. dollar) so travelers are advised to check other sources.
If you will be traveling to only a couple nations in South America you would be better advised to buy a travel guide for each country. However, if you will traverse through many countries in this fascinating continent, this book is still a valuable reference tool.
Fine, but there are better.......2006-12-06
Used this book for a three month trip through Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. A friend who travelled with me had Footprint's guide to South America. While Lonely Planet had far and away the better maps, everything else about the Footprint book was better -- more information, more current information, and most importantly, broader coverage! There were many small towns that were not even included in the LP book. Even in the major cities, Footprint covered more sights and did so with more detail. If you are picking up a second book for a trip, by all means get the LP. But if you are only buying one, go with Footprint until LP seriously expands this edition.
Good book with great information.......2006-11-05
A must have four the traveler people! The go to South America
Good for solo backpackers.......2006-10-30
Just traveled South America solo, glad I had it for those times I arrived at 3AM to a strange town and didn't know where to stay or how to get there. Other times, I just met people who told me where to stay or went with me as a guide. Overall I used the book about 15 times in 60 days but was glad to have it at those times. Not very detailed but overall enough to help. Of course, since 80% of backapckers use LP, you will constantly be around other people traveling which can be a good or bad thing depending on your goals. Fellow travelers call it the Lonely Planet route. I liked the route and felt safe the whole time.
Customer Reviews:
'Shoestring' is a must-have for ANYONE traveling in S.A........1998-10-06
I have the first edition of this book. I have used it to aid my travel to several South American countries. The city maps are excellent. Each major city in each country is described in detail to include lodging, food and entertainment. They do an excellent job of ranking food and lodging based on budget restrictions that each traveler may or may not have. I found the descriptions of local museums, parks and other tourist attractions very helpful in making my decisions on where to go and how much time to alot for each attraction.
I'm very anxious to receive the newest edition, so I can prepare for my next trip!

400+ Historic designs.......2001-12-12
While this book does show on some of the designs a diagram showing how the patterns are constructed I found it much too sketchy to really follow out how they were made. I ended up buying a companion Dover book titled 'Celtic Art:The Methods of Construction' to get a better sense of how to make these patterns step-by-step. One good thing about this book is that the source for each design shown is documented. Buy this book and the one I listed above and you'll have plenty of designs to use in your own artwork.
Book Description
In Conversations with Dog, professional animal communicator Kate Solisti-Mattelon poses some of life's most intriguing questions to our canine friends. Dogs kindly spell it out with responses that offer insights into the spiritual, physical, and mental awareness of our canine friends. Read their tremendously touching and insightful answers to questions about matters practical and profound, such as:
Why do I love you more than most humans in my life? We are uncomplicated.
Why do you chase cats? If it acts like prey, we have to act as predator.
How do you tolerate cruelty and mistreatment and still respond with unconditional love? We can't help it.
This is not a dog-care manual. It is a tool for understanding. The dogs in your life can be valuable teachers.
Conversations with Dog is filled with inspiration and canine wisdom that will enhance your intimate connection with these beautiful creatures. It is a must-read for anyone who enjoys life in the company of dogs.
Customer Reviews:
If you love dogs, this is a must read!.......2007-02-12
This book provides wonderful insight into dog behavior, how dogs think, the purpose of dogs in our lives. I loved it!
Barbara Graham, Cloverdale, CA
wonderful read.......2007-01-05
I read this book within a couple of days. It is very insightful and inspirational .
Dog Whisperer 101.......2005-05-06
I think this is a great book in learning how to understand how your dog thinks. Imagine sitting down and having a conversation with your special companion; what would you ask him or her? This book gives the basics on what those human questions and canine answers might be. It goes beyond that theorizing that if we learn to treat our dog friends right the lessons will expand to relationships with people.
I plan on reading it again and also visiting the website:www.AKinshipwithAnimals.com.
Short and invaluable to all dog owners.
Sorry I bought this book.......2004-08-09
I had to put 1 star because there is no -10 stars that I could put. This book is not what I expected, I'm wondering if this is a joke book instead of something that is supposed to be taken seriously. I am sorry I spent my time and money purchasing this book.
The Tao of Dog.......2001-02-03
This is a sweet book! The wisdom, love, and gentle guidance of the canine species (and the special touch of author and animal communicator Kate Solisti-Mattelon) will amaze and enlighten you. I laughed, cried, and was challenged to try to deeply understand these marvelous beings who have graciously chosen to throw their lot in with the human race. The questions are from real people, and the answers are from the heart and soul of dog. And they make so much sense! In "Conversations," dog provides answers from the mundane (Does it feel good to wag your tail?), to the practical (What is the easiest way to train you?), to the metaphysical (Where do you go when you die?). Here you'll find everything you ever wondered about dogs, and more than a few things you never even thought to ask. Now I look at my own dog with renewed respect, and find that our relationship is growing more special every day. Thanks, Kate, for reminding me who he really is, and helping me appreciate the great gift of love he brings to my life. No doubt about it, anyone who's ever been owned by a dog is guaranteed to love this book.

Beautifully Portrayed Pooches.......2007-08-28
This book has great photograhy in it. Each listed breed includes a brief history, standard weight and height, first and current uses, and other names for the breed. It also includes up to six "tags" that describe its personality and other characteristics, such as whether it is best-suited for cold or warm weather, if it requires a lot of grooming, ease of obedience training, how much exercise is needed, whether it is comfortable living in an urban setting, et cetera.
However, while it DOES include some of the more rare breeds (such as the Dandie Ditmont Terrier and the Lancashire Heeler), it DOES NOT include some of the more common breeds (such as the American Eskimo Dog). What I seem to dislike most is that much of the category classification is flawed. For example: Staffordshire Terriers are grouped with "terriers," though they are "mastiffs." This is because there is no "mastiff" category included, which then places bulldogs and the likes with "livestock dogs" (because of their guarding abilities). "Scent hounds" and "sight hounds" are not separated.....
All things considered, however, this is great as a quick reference guide. I bought it as a secondary book to share with my clients. If you have the money and you want DETAILED, completely accurate information, buy Bonnie Wilcox's "The Atlas of Dog Breeds of the World" (my primary resource book). It is THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE book of dog breeds I've ever found. Next best (and about one third of the price) would probably be "The NEW Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds" (emphasis on the NEW) published by Dorling Kingsley.
More for entertainment than education.......2007-05-07
With its clever title and thick, square layout, "Dogalog" grabs your attention right away on the shelves of your favorite bookstore, and a cursory perusal in the aisles will likely sway dog lovers to grab a copy.
Although a functional, if not totally accurate (as others have noted already) resource, the book's strengths are its array of colorful photos and quick facts on dog breeds. Hence, this book is more for entertainment than education.
Younger dog fanciers will especially enjoy flipping through the book. Anyone looking for information on what type of canine to adopt or rescue, however, will find a starting place here, but should expand his or her research to more in-depth sources.
Kids love this book.......2007-03-29
O.K. "The Complete Dog Book " it is not but as an additional reference point about our wonderful canine friends it is valuable. We bought this book years back when we were looking to buy a family dog that was good with kids. At the time the children were young(er)and it was perfect for them to participate in the process of finding the right dog for our family. Small book ,small hands, it was ideal for them. It served it's purpose and more as the children were educated about certain things like the classification of dogs etc. The pictures are outstanding and the basic facts suffice for starters. As a complimentary book for understanding our canine companions it is a good book, especially for youngsters. Recommended for dog lovers who need HELP in finding the right breed for the family, but not as the sole reference point.
This is not a very good book for people who love dogs!.......2007-02-20
If you want to find out what breed fits you best, this is the book for you. But as a dog history nerd, this book is not the best. The larger version is "The Encyclopedia of the Dog" by Bruce Fogle and also has not correct information, saying that the Labrador Retriever comes from England!!!! That is not correct, and is even more false than saying it came from Labrador, Canada (it came from Nova Scotia). There are also some other problems with it. The condensed version (this book) is just a worse version, being smaller with not as many breeds, and the best ones picked out (like the Dingo, which has an intersting history). All the history sections of the breeds mainly talk about where the dog came from, not the dogs it descended from like the larger version.
Great for kids.......2003-11-16
I bought this book for my 9 year old nephew who is very into dogs (right now). He is not a big book lover, much to my dismay and this book seemed good for him. I thought it had great pictures to keep his interest and not so much information/reading as to turn him off. This book introduced him to many breed most of which he would not see on a regular basis. I think it is a good intro to the dog world.

Source of Garden Inspiration.......2007-02-21
East Coast-Centric - this is a stylish guide to garden ornamentation. From rooftop terrace gardens overlooking Manhattan's Central Park incorporating bas-relief fountains festooned with putti, designated to help filter noise - to philosophers' busts arranged totem-style in old Philadelphia.
An overly exuberant South Beach garden is a carnival of color and kitsch, and some might say questionable taste. A large statue of Venus ala Bottacelli - Birth of Venus - is embellished with hand painted eyelashes. Similarly, the statue of Neptune's trident has skewered a plastic lobster. Some of this garden's whimsy works more successfully than others do.
South Beach aside, most entries are staid East Coast establishment estates that most likely shop for their trinkets at Barbara Israel. Symmetry is a requisite in the classic tradition, with enough of an occasional incongruity to keep the eye refreshed.
Those of us without architectural elements recovered from 18th Century castles outside Paris, can look and marvel at the beauty, collect a myriad of fresh ideas if we are creative faux artists, and enjoy the exceptional photography. This is now a discount book. I recommend it.
excellent.......1999-07-10
This book is a beautiful work of art and informative too. The photographs are lovely and the gardens chosen as material here are to-die-for. I've already used one of the projects included in the text...it was really fun...and it worked! Anyone interested in gardening (or just some wonderful photographs of some incredible places) would love this book...

Book Description
Kazuko Kuramoto was born and raised in Dairen, Manchuria, in 1927, at the peak of Japanese expansionism in Asia. Dairen (Port Arthur) was an important colonial outpost on the Liaotung Peninsula; the train lines established by Russia and taken over by the Japanese, ended there. When Kuramoto's grandfather arrived in Dairen as a member of the Japanese police force shortly after the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, the family's belief in Japanese supremacy and its "divine" mission to "save" Asia from Western imperialists was firmly in place. As a third-generation colonist, the seventeen-year-old Kuramoto readily joined the Red Cross Nurse Corps in 1944 to aid in the war effort and in her country's sacred cause. A year later, her family listened to the emperor's radio broadcast ". . . we shall have to endure the unendurable, to suffer the insufferable . . . unconditional surrender."
Manchurian Legacy is the story of the family's life in Dairen, their survival as a forgotten people during the battle to reclaim Manchuria waged by Russia, China, and Korea, and their subsequent repatriation to a devastated Japan. Kuramoto describes a culture based on the unthinking oppression of the colonized by the colonizer. And, because Manchuria was, in essence, a Japanese frontier, the Kuramotos lived a freer and more luxurious life than they would have in Japan-one relatively unscathed by the war until after the surrender.
As a commentator Kuramoto explores her culture both from the inside, subjectively, and from the outside, objectively. Her memoirs describe her coming of age in a colonial society, her family's experiences in war-torn Manchuria, and her "homecoming" to Japan-where she had never been-just as Japan is engaged in its own cultural upheaval.

Manchurian Legacy.......2004-11-23
Recently I was given this book to read by a friend who is preparing to teach a university course on Japanese culture and women's narrative. I am voraciously reading the books that she is considering for her course and giving her feedback. I couldn't put this book down and cried at the end. What more can one say? I sit here now as a foreigner living in Japan and find this book offers me a window into Japanese history, culture and the voice of women that is not normally acknowledged. Everyone should read this book.

Manchurian Legacy is the book,I wished that I could have read when I was in the sixth grade.Readers of that age group could easily identify with the character of Kazuko as a young woman. It is rare to find a book that can appeal to both young and old readers. The author, Kazuko Kuramoto apologizes for her writing, as English is her third language. I believe, this is what makes the book so readable. She does not bog the reader down with flowery language. What Kazuko does give the reader is a feeling of what it was like to have lived in Manchuria as a colonialist before and doing WW II.The real charm of the book is that it does not assume the reader has any knowledge of the historical events that shaped the narrative.A brief explanation that doesn't bog down the story gives you a context to understand and enjoy her memoir. The immense popularity of a book, "Angela's Ashes" shows that readers have a desire for personal stories of the ordinary man. Kazuko's story deserves to be read by as wide a audience as "Angela's Ashes"
