Indispensable - Accurate - Handy.......2000-06-04

I cannot say enough good things about this little pocket field guide. If you are going to Southern Africa on safari, whether hunting or photographing, you need this book. You can buy it at the airport in Johannesburg, but why wait to find out that the English versions are sold out?

All the mammals (yes all of them) are featured, one species per page. Each page contains color photos (not drawings) of each sex, plus info on habitat, markings, predators, weights, trophy specs and sign! Sorry birders, just mammals.

In addition, the various types of habitats are shown (bushveld, grassland, etc) as to location in Southern Africa, and then each habitat is sub-described in drawings (riverbeds, hillsides, etc) which feature the types of animals which may be found in each sub-habitat. Wow.

This little soft-backed volume fits in the pocket of your vest or shirt and is always there to help you identify the animals you will see.

Awful, limited, with prices in pounds not dollars.......2006-05-05

This book has a limited number of hotels, every restaurant and hotelprice is listed in pounds, which means you have to read it with your calculator in hand. Bummer!

This book is a great read for those new to Home Health. While parts may seem a bit dry, it is necessary to cover the legal and reimbursement aspects of home health. This book opened my eyes to the new challenges I am going to face as a Home Health Case Manager. A job at one time I thought was going to be a breeze. While challenging, this area of nursing is very rewarding as brought up in this wonderful book as well.

Have a Caucasian, this book is helpfull.......2006-12-11

Although some history facts in Stacey's book may not be current, factual and real life training experience with the breed is correct and helpfull. Comprehensive owners guide does not suggest history at all. Training these guys is not like putting a designer collar on fluffy and going down by the park. When trained they can be a great worker and offer protection to your family. Without any proper training you will be in trouble. Buy this book befor you buy this breed. (its the only one)

avcharka, caucasian mountain dog, from Russia. everything said in this book is false, "caucasian mountain dog" as you call it is ancient dog, who is purly GEORGIAN!!! georgian warriors used it in war, andit also was very effective shepard (and is nowdayes too!) Russians calim this dog is theirs, it is sin and becouse NIKITA XRUSHCHOV, brought 10 000 Georgian shepards from georgia in 20 th century, this fact uis nothing but hte cultural disresect!!! This dog is GEORGIAN, not even caucasian, only georgian (it is historicaly prooved) ancient author of ancient sictionary, Sulxan Saba Orbeliani, in his dictionary calles this dog, Georgian shepard, also know as NAGAZI (and not avcharka, russian word). there are two tipes of georgian shepards, short and long hared, they are very diffrent in ppearance but same in character. Georgian nagazi need special treetment and untill somebody (who is not aware of history) better check, and not just scip through diffrent sites, which can freely clame that fow example pizza is russian (just fot the example) I recommend author of this book to visit Georgia and see this dogs there, than read ancient historic notes, which are kept in useom, and after this im shure author will laught about her work done on this book! I'm from Italy myself, but i have been many times to Georgia and i know that dog very well! i hope you will respect history!

Much of the book was good and generic dog information (such as grooming, training and health care). This is a great breed of dog with a long long history. It would have been nice to see more info about this particular breed...stories, legends, habits, etc....

It was a quick and well put together book with what content was (again about this specific breed) there.

Outstanding book about the breed .......2005-06-02

An excellent book about the Caucasian Mountain Dog. A must read for anyone who owns, or is thinking of owning, the breed.

It is refreshing to see a book about the breed and its history that provides a real history of the breed and what it is all about. Unlike some other "breed" books, there is little if any filler from the publisher. Political issues are left for others to fuss over. This is about the Caucasian Mountain Dog.

Pictures in the book are terrific. They show the breed in all its natural habitats, which include not only environments as a guardian (against wolves, hardly as a wolf! and other predators of the four and two legged varities) but as a pet in the homes of families. Flocks are not the only ones who benefit from the watchful oversight of an LGD, or it's caring nature for it's own.

The book provides sound practical advice about the breed and who should consider it as a companion, in a fair and balanced manner. It goes beyond advice, however, and provides an understanding of what drives this breed's remarkable behavior.

That insight can only come from an author who has been deeply involved in the breed for many years. It is absolutely essential to anyone owning, and training, these wonderful dogs.

Great new book - a "must read" .......2005-06-02

This book could not possibly be nicer.

I have happily owned Caucasians for almost a decade - always as pets in suburban settings. Remembering back to when I first met the breed, this book would have been wonderfully useful. It is clear, concise, beautifully illustrated and easy to understand. There are always quite a few myths and tall tales with a rare breed. This book carefully winnows the information useful to an owner new to the breed from all that chaff.

A large dog, the Caucasian is suitable for those able to offer a home to one of the giant breeds. But there are, as always, many details pertinent to the one breed in particular. If I had had a book like this one ten years ago, I would have been able to save tons of time and money.

For those experienced in the breed, the sections on the breed standard and the illustrations of Caucasians from all other the world provide an excellent insight into what an "ideal" example of the breed should be aiming at. My big boys may not be part of this international elite, but I was very excited to see such beautiful pictures of the champions .

Since there is so little available about this breed English, the author should also be praised for her lucid prose and clean, clear style. As someone who had tried to learn about the breed through machine-translated Russian books, I was almost giddy to be able to read about these interesting dogs from a text that was as cogent in my native language as it was informative.

Overall : highest recommendation, a "must have" for both newcomers and those experienced in the breed.
