5 out of 5 stars A Strong Steady Voice for Animals.......2005-09-03

I've read other books by Cynthia Moss, and she's a great combination of passionate animal advocate and scientist. She knows her material and is well connected with other animal experts in the area. Just a great, great book, fascinating information given straight, neither sentimental nor overly gruesome, well interpreted, tempered, but above all an articulate voice for animals. She respects them and describes them exactly as they are and as they struggle to deal with growing human populations. She's done great things for animals and for humans by educating us; see her website and Amboseli National Park information.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for travelers to East Africa.......1998-05-04

This is it! The classic!
Moss covers the essentials of the large mammals of East Africa in readable but scientifically accurate descriptions -- describing not only the mammals but their behavior and habitat.
Every future traveler to East Africa would do well to read the sections of this book covering the animals the traveler expects to observe prior to traveling -- the first time and each time. This book is out of print, but widely available in libraries.

4 out of 5 stars Africa is the place to be!.......2005-08-13

This is a pretty cool book. It has many great photographs, and of course lots of good information on many different animals. Also, it shows many good and bad things that have happened in the history of Africa from the 1960s on. I think anyone who likes lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, hyenas, cheetahs, hippos, or any other cool and beautiful animals that nature offers should buy this book. It is so worth the money you'll spend on it. Plus, it's not all that pricy.

5 out of 5 stars Magic and Inspiration from the Dark Continent.......2000-08-17

Joe and Mary Ann McDonald seem to have some kind of personal relationship with the wildlife of Africa. I swear they are all part of the same family. The incredible images they bring back from Africa tell a story of the incredible strength and diversity of the wildlife of Africa. I felt like I was sitting right in the herds and laying down with the lions.

If you are debating a visit to Africa, or need inspiration for your own photography from two of the wildlife photographers on the planet, get this book right now.

The McDonalds take photo tours to Africa several times a year, usually sold out. If these are the images people come home with from their trips, it's no wonder they are sold out. It is obvious though that their repeated trips there, spending lots of time with the animals, has paid off. They have truly captured a rarely seen intimacy in the wildlife. Top of my list!

5 out of 5 stars Rick Steves' Scandanavia 2005.......2005-08-29

As always, Rick Steves has a lot of valuable and informative information about the subject. In this case he provides a great deal of useful and timely data for anyone planning a trip to Scandanavia. The guide also is a valuable travel tool to have and use while visiting Scandanavia. Specific information about accomodations , dining and sightseeing are always 'right on the money'. Thanks, Rick!

          1 out of 5 stars Absolutely horrible.......2005-08-26

No information on Sweden except Stockholm and Sweden's south. Hardly any information on North Norway. Not for those travelling by car. Out of 2 Restaurant recommendations we tried to follow in Bergen this August, one restaurant had shut down, and another had incorrect hours specified. Most hotels listed for Tallinn are horribly overpriced. Overall, a real disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable in Scandinavia.......2005-06-08

I just returned from a two-week adventure in Scandinavia, where I hung out in Oslo, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. I had a great time seeing the places where my predecessors came from, and I can attribute much of my trip's success to the "Rick Steves' Scandinavia 2005" guidebook. Mr. Steves has created an excellent and portable all-in-one travel resource for this region. It's well organized, and compact enough to fit in a jacket pocket for consultation on the fly. But most importantly, his hotel, transportation, and attraction recommendations fit my traveling desires and saved me time and money.

For example, finding a decent place to stay in a strange country can be daunting, but Mr. Steves' picks came through every time. His three-tiered rating system based on pricing helped me zero in on optimal accommodations: high (fancier hotels), moderate (nice, but no frills), and low priced (hostels and private homes). I stuck to the moderate level, and the book led me to a good night's sleep in each city. The City Hotel and Rainbow Hotel Astoria in Oslo, Hotel Jorgensen in Copenhagen, and Queen's Hotel in Stockholm were all great for a thirtysomething solo traveler on a budget. They had helpful staff, good breakfasts included with the room, and locations close to transportation centers and attractions.

Getting around Scandinavia was made easier by the hints in "Scandinavia 2005." Taking the night cruise from Oslo to Copenhagen got me on a cruise ship for the first time, and watching the shore slip by while enjoying a nice wine and cigar was sweet. I also took Mr. Steves' advice and reserved a couchette on a night train from Copenhagen to Stockholm (a bit crowded with five other people in the cabin, but efficient nontheless). Both methods enabled me to combine travel with sleep to maximize time and kroner savings. And his admonition to rely on walking and bicycling to intimately experience the cities was smart, especially since I lost seven pounds while seeing the sights!

Finally, Mr. Steves' ratings on things to see and do helped me dive into my Nordic roots. He uses a zero to three triangle rating system (three triangles = don't miss; two triangles = try hard to see; one triangle = worthwhile if you can make it; no triangle = worth knowing about). Based on his recommendations, I experienced cool sights like the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, Christiania in Copenhagen, and the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. Simple hand-drawn maps helped me navigate the cities and easily find these attractions (along with the accommodations listed above). And the additional information he provided enabled me to prioritize my sightseeing based on distance, operating hours, and price.

Of course, no guidebook is perfect because the information is static and recommendations are based on opinion. Admission prices rise, museums change their exhibits, and a "don't miss" attraction ends up being a bust (like the three-triangle Nordic Museum in Stockholm, mainly because Swedish fabrics and dinner settings aren't my thing). But having the "Rick Steves' Scandinavia 2005" guidebook really helped me to achieve an outstanding travel experience I'll never forget. For that, he gets my highest endorsement.

          2 out of 5 stars Not Rick's Best.......2004-10-01

While I usually love Rick Steves' books, won't leave home without one, and take nothing else, this book was a disappointment. The directions were very poor so we got lost even on his orientation walks (not generally a time you need a real city map). The accomodations listings were wanting. Though it said you could assume breakfast was included and credit cards were accepted unless otherwise mentioned, this never worked. We found no breakfasts at places that he didn't specifically describe them, and the places in Denmark he listed as taking credit cards only accepted Danish cc's. We found better meals for better prices than he recommended with very minimal effort. Scandanavia is so expensive that saving money (the primary RS claim) is critical, but not easy following this book's suggestions. This guide was so far below the normal RS standard, we were left wondering if RS actually had anything to do with it or if he has bitten off more than he can chew during his success and passed it off to less consciencous minions. The book was helpful on narrowing down what to see, so I would recommend checking it out; just don't rely on it exclusively.

3 out of 5 stars A good book, but not as good as other Rick Steves' guides.......2004-08-05

This book was very helpful in putting together basic itineraries for the Scandinavian countries. However the Lonely Planet book was more complete, and the maps are FAR superior. I actually needed both of them to "guide me" through this area. Sometimes, the Steves' guide provided me information that I could not find in the Lonely Planet guide and vice versa.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for anyone just starting out!.......2006-08-02

This is a super book for anyone just starting out in pageants. This book has the basics of how to get started and lots of great tips. The best part is there are several pages of sample interview questions to practice with. I loved this book very easy to read.

          5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!.......2005-07-09

Although this book seemed to steal a bit of material from others--like anecdotes from another pageant book I know--it was EXTREMELY detailed and helpful in getting prepared and realizing that IMAGE IS EVERYTHING in a pageant. Honestly, I can't see how I competed without buying this book first. This book practically gives the formula for success, even how to stand and walk in swimsuit! I can't wait for my next competition!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2002-06-19

Anna Stanley's insight as a contestant, judge, and director makes her book an outstanding guide for contestants. Her coverage on each phase of competition has thoroughly prepared me for my state and national crown. The appendix of resources serves as an effective aid for contestants with their pre-pageant packing and research. "The Crowning Touch" is a valuable reference source for all pageant affiliates and would be a wonderful edition to your library.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I've read in a long time........2000-10-17

Although it includes a few helpful tips (such as the list of interview questions in the back), most of the information does not go beyond common sense. The frequent typos and poor writing give the impression that the author simply sat down and wrote the first thoughts that sprang to mind, without bothering to go back and polish her work.

4 out of 5 stars A comprehensive manual for pageant hopefuls.......1999-07-15

The Crowning Touch is a comprehensive manual for beauty pageant entrants. Everything from acing the interviews to projecting an attractive image in a swimsuit is covered. A must-read for all interested in entering such competitions.

As a twelve-year-old first time Dwarf Rabbit owner, I read this book countless times and reveled in the vivid color photography. Almost every color of rabbit imaginable is pictured within these pages, and almost every breed is described in a paragraph of its own. Of course, at only 64 pages, this is hardly the exhaustive guide to owning a dwarf rabbit; it's not the book you want if you're going to get serious about showing and breeding (though there is a chapter on breeding toward the end of the book). The contents also include chapters on "Considerations before Buying," "Selection," "Acclimation," "Feeding, "Care," "Behavior," and "Health," among other topics. Overall, this is the perfect book to guide an amateur bunny keeper of any age who wants the basics (and some nice pictures).

4 out of 5 stars First In Fishing Lure Collecting Information.......2004-12-01

The "Bible" was the first book that I knew of, that gave collector's information on fishing Lure collecting. Originally the bible came in a three ring binder. This book, while not in the same format of the current books, carries forth the original ideas and information of the author and gives the readers some idea of how much work went into being the first book on collecting. This book is still valid today with information on obscure manufacture's that are not listed in some of the other reference's. Always a good read, but not to be confused with the coffee table reference books that are also available.

              2 out of 5 stars The Fishing Lure Collector's Bible - R. L. Streater.......2000-02-17

I was disappointed. To begin, this book is a very difficult read. The 'Color Gallery' is beautiful but the picture captions give little or no information and refer the reader to the 'Value Guide'. Here is the problem. The 'Guide' appears to be nothing more than a collection of 400+ pages of poor b&w photocopies of old magazine ads! The copy consists of small, hard to read newsprint; tiny, type-written 'values'; hand-lettered, cartoonish descriptions and comments and some 'hand-drawn' depictions of various lures. The rest of the lure pictures range from coarse 'line-drawings', to 'blotchy', to totally black silhouettes. All told, it is difficult to judge the content due to the lack of detail, which should be the priority here. Perhaps I have been spoiled. My first book on this subject was Carl F. Luckey's "Old Fishing Lures & Tackle", a totally classy and professionally done work. It is everything the 'Collector's Bible' is not. Mr. Luckey's publication is done, and done well. Mr. Streater's publication looks like a second or third draft, not yet ready to go to the printer.

The need for keeping a garden diary is as apparent as the limitations of our memories. Not only do we frequently lose plant names, but also freeze dates and garden triumphs as well as failures. Beautiful enough to give as a gift, and practical enough to use yourself everyday, The New Three-Year Garden Journal should work better than the many notebooks one begins and discards over the years.

Each month begins with advice on plants and design; herbs, climbers, shrubs, trees, annuals and bulbs are all discussed and illustrated with color photos. Then for each month, weather warnings are given by region of the country (April: danger of frost continues in the Northeast, September: extreme heat still possible in the mid-South), and tasks for each week of the month, divided by the same seven regions. Pruning, fertilizing, planting, and maintenance tasks are described alongside lined pages for each of the three years.

It is clear that The New Three Year Garden Journal was designed by a gardener. Chock full of information, it is spiral-bound to lay flat so it's easy to write in. Carry it with you into the garden, glue in photos or sketch ideas on the pages of graph paper, dream over the lovely color photos. This is a book to use over and over again during the three-year period it covers, then look back at for years into the future. --Valerie Easton

5 out of 5 stars Making a habit of garden writing.......2007-01-29

This is the beginning of my tenth year using this book. It is very convenient to look back and see where the garden is in relation to past years. It is especially fun in an unusual year like this one, when winter hasn't seem to arrive yet, though it is nearly February. When and if it comes it will be much shorter than usual. I use the book to record rain totals, bloom times, maintenance issues and to put reminders for next year where I will notice them in time. The book binding and pages hold together very nicely for the three years, despite some dirt and water from the garden, and many repeated openings and closings.

1 out of 5 stars The New Three-Year Garden Journel.......2004-12-10

While there are wonderful photos and a very nice layout in the book, the regional gardening guide completely omits the Upper Midwest. I was very disappointed because the growing conditions in places like Minnesota, Wisconson, Iowa and Illinois are not represented. I would also conclude if you live in places like Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, you may also be disappointed because those climates and growing conditions are also not represented. While one could follow the regional guides for the Plains, Mid South or the Northest in these areas, omiting these regions really is not acceptable. For about a third of the country, this is not a good choice for a garden journal.

5 out of 5 stars Both useful and beautiful.......2004-09-02

As an experienced gardener, I've used a number of journals over the years. This one ranks among the best for utility and beauty. There are a number of full color photos scattered throughout, along with (loosely) season-specific design guides: Designing with Vegetables in summer, Designing with Houseplants in winter, etc. The back of the book also includes garden maintenance information on pruning, winter protection, propagation, and other areas. None of this maintenance information is especially new or comprehensive, but it's handy to have as a quick reference. There are also blank graphing pages throughout for your own design ideas.

The real value in this book for me is in the week-by-week "to-do" lists for each region and in the many blank lines for my notes. For example, in the second week of October in the mid-Atlantic, the book advises that you prune and fasten climbing plants against wind damage and take hardwood cuttings to increase plant stock. These to-do lists are great reminders for when to fertilize the lawn, prune woody plants, plant peas and lettuce, etc.

Each week also has three columns of blank lines for your notes, with a blank header line to fill in the year. This layout is especially appealing to me, as I may use all three columns the first week of January to lay out my design ideas one year, but I still have three weeks of note space left for the following years' January notes. During growing season, I use only one column per week to track weather, pests, and so on.

The only gripe I have about this book is that while it is spiral-bound to lie flat, it's not possible to fold in back on itself like most spiral notebooks. It's also a fairly large book so you pretty much need to lie it flat on a table to be comfortable writing in it -- or at least I do. If it folded on itself, it would be a lot easier to take notes with the book resting in my lap in the garden.

              Otherwise, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The New Three-Year Garden Journal:With Regional Planning gui.......2000-04-30

This is a great book. There is plenty of space provided for you to write about your garden for every week of the year. It is also very informative. It gives specific info. for every zone in many different gardening topics for every month. And it has a special topic it goes into depth for for every month of the year. There are beautiful photographs throughout the entire book. It also has graph pages for designing gardens. I have recommended this book to quite a few friends who have loved it.

                  Book Description

In this volume the author completes his study of the period of the Counter-Reformation between the years 1537- 1622. On the basis of the original documents he reveals the underground work of the agents of the Counter-Reformation in their attempt to entice eligible students from the far North to study at Jesuit colleges in Dorpat, Vilna, Braunsberg, Prague, Graz, and Rome at the expense of the Holy See with a view to infiltrating them into the body politic of the Scandinavian kingdoms at all levels of society, viz. church, school, state bureaucracy. In his analysis the author attempts to identify the students involved and trace their degree of success.
