Adequate in the writing style department.......2005-06-01
I generally enjoyed "Ranch of Dreams" - what animal lover couldn't? Heartwarming stories of animal rescues written in a quick and oftentimes witty style.
However, it is that same writing style that occasionally brings Amory from the respectable "pro-animal" into the realm of "anti-human." He becomes argumentative and defensive at times, making me want to argue right back, despite the fact that I agree with him.
Despite this, Amory's book is a worthwhile read, though I would recommend seeking out a cheap used copy and spending the money you save on "Best Friends: The True Story of The World's Most Beloved Animal Sanctuary," another lovely book on saving animals in need.
Ranch of Dreams is Excellent!.......2004-07-20
I absolutely loved this book. Although difficult to handle when reading about the abuse of animals, it is so well written that you just can't put it down. Cleveland's sense of humor shows through his writing and makes this book a must-read! And, if you haven't been to the Ranch of Dreams - you must go!!! Black Beauty Ranch in TX is the most beautiful place in the world - and the beauty is so much more than what meets the eye!
Maybe a life-changing book........2003-08-05
Cleveland Amory wrote of his beloved cat Polar Bear, "Heaven will be no heaven for me if Polar Bear is not there."
I say heaven will be no heaven for me if Cleveland Amory is not there. Anyone with even a small soft spot in his heart cannot fail to be moved by the stories of the Black Beauty Ranch and the animals of various species that call it home.
Someone recently asked me what I'd do if I didn't need to work for a living. I think I'd want to go to Murchison, Texas and help care for the ranch's residents.

Having never read anything by Cleveland Amory before I was quite surprised to learn of Black Beauty Ranch in East Texas.Ranch of Dreams opened my eyes to what really goes on behind the circus tents,most haunting and heartwrenching the cruel treatment of the elephants,ripped from their mothers and herds and beaten into submission.Dear Mr Amory;he passed before writing a follow up book. The book is well worth the read,a lesson in human compassion,and when you are finished,pass it on to a friend.
Ranch of Dreams left me wanting more........1999-03-05
I guess I just expected more from this book. I wanted more personal experiences and more discussions of individual animals that had been brought to the ranch. I feel that the book was to "general" in its approach. It just wasn't personal enough.

I purchased this book prior to a sailing trip through the British Virgin Islands. My family has bareboat chartered in other locations before, but was our first trip to the BVI. This guide was outstanding - gave thorough information about anchoring, mooring and also activities and amenities to enjoy on the various islands. I would highly recommend purchasing this book prior to boating in the Virgin Islands. There is so much to do - we plan to go back next year - we couldn't get to all of the great places this year on a 9 day trip.
An easy guide for some the worlds easiest sailing waters.......2005-05-25
The spiral binder is a simple solution to using the book aboard. While it is true that you'll get a lot of ads it's a fair trade off since you'll only pay about half of what other cruising guides cost and it will show you the services you're likely to use. I find the technical aspects of this guide (anchoring, mooring, customs, etc.) to be clear and accurate. I've used some well respected guides for other areas that were not so.
Don't go sailing in the BVI without this..........2002-01-09
I recently did a sailing course in the BVI and this book came as part of the package. It was an invaluable asset to sailing in the Virgin Islands and I highly recommend it before going there. Details on restaurants, places to anchor for the day and overnight anchorages. This is a great reference book!
The best single source of information for the VI sailor........2001-03-13
If you only had one publication to take on a trip to the Virgin Islands this would be it. The updates are good which means their research is working and I am really pleased to see the return to a spiral binding. This works so well when you want it to stay opened to a particular page.

A superb textbook for classroom-based Chinese courses.......2003-09-29
Having studied (Mandarin) Chinese for some years - beginning with a full-time intensive course that went on for several months - I've acquired a lot of Chinese learning materials. Out of all these, however, I think that NEW CHINESE 300 is one of the most effective textbooks for groups.
What makes NEW CHINESE 300 remarkable is that it manages to pack a great deal of the Chinese language into less than 400 pages, without throwing out sufficient explanation for the reader. Plenty of examination of the student's skill also abounds; a teacher utilising the book's drills to their fullest could bring a class to significant fluency very quickly.
NEW CHINESE 300 starts off with an ideal introduction to the language. Students are introduced to the phonetic system of Chinese - syllables can consist of an initial, vowel, and final - which has been neglected in many recent textbooks. Then the book makes the student learn the writing system as soon as he or she is given Chinese vocabulary, resulting in an impressive command of a couple of hundred ideographs by the end of the course. And to top it all of, the book is a superb value.
I don't want to gush too much, as the book is not without its faults. It would be nice if it was easier to cover up the pinyin transliteration that accompanies each dialog sentence given in Chinese characters, so that the reader can concentrate on reading only characters. Also, NEW CHINESE 300 is best when it is used in a structured classroom course. For the self-teaching student, it could be helpful but would seem rather daunting to most.
I earnestly recommend taking a look at NEW CHINESE 300 to any Chinese teacher looking for a textbook.

I was quite disappointed with the audio tapes provided with this textbook. The voice quality and sound effects are distracting. Great book. Newer audio tapes or CDs would make this set complete.

Funny thing, all I could think when I was reading through this was 'Hey Kids, if you think what your mothers are trying to put you in now stinks, this is what they would be putting you in back then'.
Considering what kids are wearing today, back then looks pretty good.
My only problem is this book does not show what work cloths of the time were like. Nor does it show ordinary cloths. Just the Sunday best.

what do you expect...this book was written by a man who breeds bearded dragons and it is a book about bearded dragons. It is a wonderful book and tells you everything you need to know about keeping a bearded dragon whether you are breeding them or not. I personally own a 1 year old dragon, and this has been like the bible to me. Whenever something is wrong i consult this book and it will always have the answer you need. All the other books are written by herpotologists who have never actually owned, bred, or loved a bearded dragon. This book is amazingly helpful and comes from a person who knows what he is doing. I would recommend it to anyone who is planning on owning and loving a bearded dragon.
Not a very useful book.......2001-11-28
I don't like this book at all, the authors only writes about keeping the bearded dragons in big outdoor vivariums, and not about having just 1-3 bearded dragons as pets.
Very little information about feeding, housing and everything you really want to know. The authors also doesn't seem to think about the bearded dragons as pets, to cuddle with and have fun with, but only as something you can breed.
I almonst never read or look in this book, and I regret that I bought it.
I rekommend Liz Palikas book "Your Bearded Dragon's Life" and the book "The guide to a owning a BD" by David Zoffer and Tom Mazorlig instead!

This is a very through book on the care and maintenance of Bearded Dragons. It is excellent for the beginer lizard keeper. I highly recommend this book if you want to take good care of your Bearded Dragon(s).It contains information on their diet, vivarium design, and other very useful information. It is one of the most reliable reptile books I have read.

This book is amazing!! I bought it about two weeks before my parents bought me a bearded dragon. It told me everything i need to know. It tells you everything about making terrariums and what to feed them. It also has sections on breeding and general information on the different species. This is a must buy if you are planning to raise a bearded dragon.

I bought this book when my parents bought me a baby bearded dragon. this has everything you need to know about raising dragons. it tells you all the feeding instructions and it also has an extensive list of diseases and ailments and there respective symptoms. it tells you all about how to create a good terrarium. it also has information on breeding and overall care of the dragons. this is an amazing book and i would recommend it to anyone that is looking to buy a bearded dragon.

This book is a little gem.
It includes a lot of information about car models detailing. The book starts from the needed tools, and includes concise but good description of the systems on a car (engine, electric, brakes, etc.).
Then it includes tips for detailing of the engine, exteriors, interiors, chassis, wheels, etc., together with photos of both models in construction and finished ones.
