Book Description
The author surveys the astonishing diversity of South-East Asian wildlife, a fauna that includes 660 distinct species, representing over one-seventh of the world's wild mammals. Among them are many mammals which cannot be found elsewhere: the gymnures and tree-shews, flying bats, tarsiers and
orangutans, aboreal fruit eaters, anteaters, and numerous rodents. The text is enlivened by descriptions of scientific discoveries and personal anecdotes based on the author's long experience as a naturalist in the regions he describes.

Rough Guide India.......2007-07-04
Some of the same complaints that I have for the Lonely Planet Guide except this one was harder to read due to the use of the lighter inks in the text. Information was excellent! Now print a smaller, more detailed version for Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra, Khajuraho and Varanasi. These are the areas that most tourists are traveling to and all the rest is just wasted paper as we tear the books apart for our travels.
Best guidebook for India.......2007-04-28
This is the best guidebook I know of for India. I used it on my recent trip and found it overall to have excellent, in-depth information, great info for putting things in cultural/historical context, and detailed, accurate maps. In my opinion it blows Lonely Planet out of the water. Several Indian guesthouse owners and the man at the tourist desk in Varanasi (who has worked there for 25 years) told me the same thing, and on the flipside I met not a single person who recommended Lonely Planet over this book. The general consensus about the Rough Guide is that rather than just giving a bunch of listings, it gives really practical information on how to get to places, get things done, get a ticket, avoid scams, and so on, in significantly greater depth than Lonely Planet. But not only is it more practical--it also gives more cultural/historical context, opinion, and descriptive writing. Lonely Planet, on the other hand, seems to have become lazy since they know they will sell a lot of books on name recognition alone. The last time I used Lonely Planet was on a trip to Brazil, and I was so disappointed with it that I vowed never to use them again. However, unlike Lonely Planet, I think you will have a positive experience with this book. A good guidebook is crucial in India because it is such a difficult country to travel in, and I think you won't be disappointed with this one.
Not very useful for Northeastern India, but great for North India.......2007-03-15
I have just returned from a one month holiday in Bangladesh and Northeastern India. I was hoping for a more region-specific guide but there isn't one, so I had to carry this bulky country-wide guide with me.
This appears to be an excellent guide for the more "usual" destinations in India, but people should be aware that it barely covers Northeastern India at all. Part of this is due to an editorial decision to drop information from prior editions due to political instability in many of those states, but the decisions on which areas to drop do not match local knowledge about which areas actually might prove unsafe for foreigners as opposed to local politicians. Granted, it is an ever-changing scenario, and this guide is by now a few years old.
My main complaint though is the maps of the hill stations; particularly those of Darjeeling and Gangtok. They are just plain wrong, and not to scale (even in cases where they say they are to scale). Unfortunately the Indian government tourist maps for those towns and also Kalimpong are also wrong, and not to scale either, but are somewhat more helpful, so my suggestion is to visit the local tourist offices immediately upon arrival in each town and pick up their official maps.
In both cases, however, contours are missing, and considering that these towns have several hundred to several thousand feet differential between top and bottom, and that there are no pedestrian steps to cut across the time-consuming road switchbacks, one can easily make a wrong decision at a switchback crossing and miss a major point of interest (such as the major monastery at the top of Gangtok). At the very least, since most roads are one-way (and few if any are marked), showing directionals would help.
Considering this edition is many generations removed from the first edition, it is not acceptable that directions are often completely inaccurate. For instance, the major monastery outside Gangtok is listed as being to its east, when it is really to its southwest (but I did find it). And in Kalimpong, I missed the main monastery as I ran out of time after going more than twice as far as the stated distance and still not reaching the monastery south of town (which R.G. listed as being at the top of the hill, when ALL of the locals that I asked confirm it is near the bottom!).
To be fair, the Lonely Planet guide is much, much worse all around. I have just ordered the Footprint guide to see if it is more accurate and complete for this region of India. I would at least like an accurate reference for matching against my trip notes, photos, and writeups!
As far as the non-Himalayan eastern states are concerned, there is almost no coverage at all, for the previously stated reasons, but hopefully this will change in the next edition, as travel restrictions are blightening up and it is now possible to arrange permits for Aranchal Pradesh and Naga just a few days in advance (quite easy if you sign up for a local multi-day tour based out of a major town such as Guwahati in Assam).
It would have been helpful to be more specific about which languages are spoken in which towns/regions, as this area is quite a patchwork, and also to mention the likelihood (or not) of encountering English speakers. As it turns out, the main hub for northeastern connections, Siliguri (in the northern part of West Bengal state), inexplicably has almost no English fluency at all, even though ALL travelers must pass through this town to make onward connections. Most resourceful travelers can work through this though, but travel guides need to also guide the more timid tourists.
I will give Rough Guide credit for fairly good descriptions of the major highlights and how to reach them (which is quite difficult and more than one can ask from a guide that is only updated every two to three years). As always, they are the most culturally sensitive guide book and take the most effort to go for first source information (vs. Lonely Planet's habit of quoting second source information that is incorrect, without bothering to check it out -- and I am referring not just to location based information, but also cultural and historical background).
Maps lacking detail & accuracy.......2007-02-10
A bit too much like the Lonely Planet and like LP, a bit lazy and predictable. Why, for instance, do these guides not recommend hotels near the Jama Masjid in Agra (where one can find shops and food in abundance, where one is but a short walk from the Red Fort and hence a short walk from access to the Taj and where transportation does not involve the hassles that one encounters in other parts of town)? You tend to find that LP and Rough Guide give the same recommendations as far as hotels are concerned 6 out of ten times...it's not that difficult - most Indian towns of any size have an array of options.
I find the most frustrating aspects of this guide to be: the complete lack of maps for certain regions (I found there to be few maps of smaller towns in Tamil Nadu); inaccuracies in the maps (the Akbar Inn in Agra is 1km away from the point indicated and not on the same street as Tourist Guest House...in Gwalior, the guide will have you walking lenghty circles only to find that the hotel you are looking for is a stone's throw from the station on a road not indicated...in Bhavnagar a circle haphazardly placed on a map in the middle of a labyrinthine bazaar is apparently meant to serve a purpose); and the scales are occasionally wrong.
There are also internal contradictions...the time from town A to town B is indicated as 5 hours when one looks at the travel info for town A but as 7 hours when one looks at the info for town B.
Having recently decided that LP had seriously dropped its standards when it suggested turning left out of the bus stop in a Chinese town of plus 1 million people and looking for a red sign, I am at a loss for a decent guide book. Maybe the Footprint or Handbook guides are the way to go - I have yet to try them. What I tend to find most useful are older LPs (eg those of 10 years ago)...prices change and hotels open and close but those guides did tend to provide more options as far as hotels are concerned and the maps tended to be more accurate - some hotels will remain and where one finds one, one usually finds others.
Overrated! A big disappointment.......2007-01-05
After using over 10 Lonely Planet books to travel Asia and Latin America, I thought I'd give this book a shot since many people had praised it. I was very disappointed. The maps, the background information, and the writing are just BLAND, BLAND, BLAND. Lonely Planet is still king if you want interesting, informative information with highly detailed maps. Concerning Inda, it's best to buy either LP's Northern India or Southern India in separate editions- one book just can't do justice to a country as large and diverse as India.

THE ROUGH GUIDE TO GOA - PRINTED JANUARY 2006 6TH EDITION BY DAVID ABRAM.......2007-01-22
QUICK INFORMATION
The Rough Guide to Goa is firstly what it says it is - A guide. It has been put together to help and advise you with resourceful information for your forth-coming travels. This guide I would say would be exceptional for backpackers and holiday makers travelling only in Goa. If you are looking to travel other places in India please look to a more suitable book to cover your whole scope.
When purchasing and selecting any travel books always look to see when the book was printed, this edition that I am reviewing is the 6th edition printed January 2006 this would be the most recent and up to date book in the Rough Guide to Goa series. Even though this book is a year old it still supplied me with all the information I needed books in this series are normally updated every two years.
Just having returned from Goa myself, I found this edition to be excellent value for money all information given is extremely well written, descriptive, easy to understand, maps were detailed and were shown to be very useful and informative. For holiday makers it gives you some great tips if you decide to venture outside of your accommodation and take a closer look at life beyond a beach holiday, for backpackers or people just turning up for a few weeks wandering around, it can supply you with a quick fix in your moment of need.
PLACES COVERED
Panjim and central Goa, North Goa, South Goa, Around Goa, Mambai (Bombay) each place is also extensively covered with the history, the religions of Goa, Environmental issues in Goa, Natural history, Goan music and dance, Books. Language: Hindi, Konkani words and phrases, (food and drink terminology).
BOOK OVERVIEW
This book is beautifully laid out, we start with an introduction Where to go, When to go, Things not to be missed, I would advise you read this thoroughly before your visit so that you can make the most of your travels it supplies you with information on your expectations while in Goa. This is followed by the Basics, Getting There, Visas and red tape, information on websites and maps (please use websites extensively before you travel very handy for backpackers on the move) Insurance, Health (medical information please check all key points in this section before travelling) Costs, Money and banks, Getting around, accommodation (covering all ends of the scale) eating and drinking this covers places from the top end to a local shack on the beach. Communications and the media, Festivals and holidays, Cultural hints and etiquette, shopping and souvenirs, Crime and personal Security, Travellers with disabilities, Travelling with Children, Women and sexual harassment and lastly the directory (Things advisable to take).
MY TIPS
Going to brief over a few areas, Goa's number one income is made from Tourism therefore it's very commerical to other parts of India. I suggest reading this book thoroughly before travelling all website are handy for extra information, when travelling around word of mouth is the biggest source the people are lovely and will always go out of there way to help you with information. The hotels for Luxury Retreats are normally based to the South of Goa, The parties for the Backpackers look to the North. Markets (a definite for all) Nothing like the hustle and bustle great for a taste of India and you can pick up just about anything on the cheap of course haggling is part of life please stay light hearted about it all, the big flea market Anjauna (North Goa holiday makers can still stay in the South and travel North to the markets for the day they are easily excisable) Wednesday Mornings early till evenings the only draw back is the prices tend to start high some tourist will pay beyond (or will not haggle) to get what they want, always haggle, prices can start from as much as 4 times to high, but haggling remains all part of the fun to get your best price. The Mapusa Market (Friday Mornings) is good for Fish, Fruit, Spices, Sausages and other fresh produce sold along side tourist goods. There are also Nights Markets held inland from Baga that are really good but a favourite is Ingo's at Arpora which has a good mix of live music along side traders selling clothes. Fabrics can be bought and clothes can be made very cheap. You will no doubt at one point on your trip also be pestered by hawkers mainly on beaches begging or selling their wears it's just part of life in India. Temples and ruins are also a must again haggle your prices for trips (taxi drivers can vastly vary). As always enjoy yourself but stay sharp and keep your wits about you especially in crowded areas.
There's also very many amazing beaches, so have a wonderful time relax and enjoy.

Though Emerson said "Quotation confesses inferiority," and Thomas Fuller advised "Search not Authors to say what thou canst as well say thyself," E.M. Cioran warned "Beware of thinkers whose minds function only when they are fueled by a quotation," and Vauvenargues contended that "Other people's wit does not entertain us for long," there is always the viewpoint of Samuel Richardson, who said "We are wise by other people's experience," and Ovid's, who believed "It is right to learn even from one's enemies."
The Quotationary is a collection of quotations, some 20,000 of them, arranged by subject (from Ability to Zen, and each with suggestions of other headings to check for similar topics), cross-referenced by author (from Edward Abbey on truthfulness to Martin Zweig on the stock market), and then indexed by subject categories as well, making it easy to find the right bon mot to start a speech or cap an argument (or cap a speech and start an argument). And they are addictive. It may be instructive, but it is also entertaining to read the words of others. There's Napoleon's view that "All being said, I like only those people who are useful to me, and only so long as they are useful," and Fran Lebowitz opining that "There is no such thing as inner peace. There is only nervousness or death." The important thing is that whatever take on life you espouse, you can not only find elegant quotes to support you, but also fine words to the opposite. --Stephanie Gold

The BEST!.......2006-11-16
Oftentimes, people ask me how I come up with such insightful quotes for my blogpage.
My answer is..... "I am just so witty that I recite them from memory, my dear!"
But the TRUTH is... this damn book right here.
It is the best dictionary of quotes I have ever seen, and believe me, I have looked.
This one is the best.
The reason that it is the best, is the quotes given are not STUPID!
They are actually relevant and good. Every single day I post a quotation on my webpage, and this book has been my savior, when my own inspiration has been running shallow. Really good.
I bought it.
You should, too.
Best Quotation Book Ive Used.......2002-05-10
Ive used a lot of quotation books, but if i had to choose one, this would the one. Easy to use, sorted by topic and a great index (not as large as Bartlett's best still nice). Only thing thats kind of annoying is that the pages are on the upper inside corner of the page. It can be a bother when trying to flip to a page, but i got over it. All in all, i think this is the best quotation book out their, especially for the paperback price.
A Treasure, by fermed.......2002-04-04
I have several quotation reference books, but this is the one that sits on my desk because it is by far my favorite. It contains a good mixture of recent, old, and ancient sayings, organized by themes. Many quotations are cross-referenced by theme, and others by similarity of structure ("Nothing succeeds like success," by Dumas, leads to "Nothing succeeds like excess" by Wilde.) There are over 20,000 quotes, meticulously referenced and often containing rich ancillary material. For instance, the famous "I'll have what she is having" is cited under the general theme of "Sex;" it notes that the author was Nora Ephron (1941--) in the film "When Sally Met Harry," 1989. Said by a woman diner to the waiter after observing Meg Ryan, at another table, acting out an orgasm.
While surfing the book I came across this quotation by Henry Kissinger, on the occasion of Nixon's nomination for president in 1968: "This man, of course, is a disaster. Now the Republican Party is a disaster. Fortunately, he can't be elected--or the whole country would be a disaster area." And this by Nixon, used frequently in reference to Kissinger: "My Jew boy," cited in Isaacson's "Kissinger: A Biography," 1992.
I'm sorry that not a single citation by Borges made the cut. At least his marvelous characterization of England and Argentina after the Falkland's war should have made it: "It was a fight of two bald men over a comb." The book also has its irritants: it contains no index of first words or fist lines. Thus, if one wants to know who said "Play it again, Sam," there is no easy way of finding out that NOBODY in Casablanca uttered those words. To find out, one must know that Casablance was written by Julius Epstein, look him up in the index, and there on page 530 you will see that it was Ilse (Ingrid Bergman) who said "Play it, Sam. Play "As Time Goes By." Finally, there is the irritant of the page numbers: instead of being centered (top or bottom) or on the outer margins of the pages, the numbers were placed in the inner margins, so that one cannot do a quick flicking of pages to find what we are looking for, but rather the book must be opened entirely to see then hidden page numbers near the center fold.
Still: the paperback edition of this thick volume is sturdy and will likely withstand rugged use. For under twenty bucks, it is a highly recommended bargain, and a useful reference book.
The Best.......2001-05-12
I have several dozen quote books in my personal library, including the usuals like Oxford and Bartlett's. Among big quote dictionaries, the Quotationary is the best. I wish it had a key word index, but even without one, I find this book more enjoyable and useful than the others. It truly is fun just to sit and read several pages at a time.
After reading dozens of quote books, I have seen ample proof that too many quote compilers spend more time copying each others' work than finding NEW material; this sometimes results in the same incorrect information showing up in several different books. The Quotationary is a very pleasant exception, and the source information has proven near-perfect in accuracy.
If you can only buy one major quote dictionary, this one is an outstanding choice.
A Handy Desk Reference that is FULL of Wit and Wisdom.......2001-02-11
Eric Hoffer's best stuff. The distilled H. L. Mencken. The best lines of David Letterman, Langston Hughes, Barbara Kinsolver, Peter DeVries, Bob Hope, Garrison Keillor, and much of the wit and wisdom of our age is encompassed between these covers. A bargain at twice the price.

. . . if you tell them Benjamin Franklin said it first. While great quotations are fun for everyone, they are particularly useful to the author or professional speaker seeking confirmation of his or her premise.
This book is entertaining, uplifting and a valuable resource. The book categorizes the quotations by author and, unlike most books of quotations, it provides background information on the person such as the dates of birth and death as well as his or her occupation. The Index references the quotations by subject.
As a publisher, author of 26 Books, over 90 revised editions, six translations, 51 reports and over 500 magazine articles, I spend a lot of time looking for appropriate quotations. I need the best tools. This book is a great tool. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.

OK for dog-owners; glaring omissions regarding cats.......1999-02-28
There is MUCH more info here re: dogs. One glaring omission is re: diarrhea. Over-the-counter medicines for dogs are listed; none listed for cats (ones listed cannot be given to cats; this is stated in the book). This is just one example of the bias in this book towards dogs. Don't waste your money if you own a cat!!
Comprehensive and easy to understand........1999-02-23
This book covers just about anything you'll run across with your cat and/or dog. Each entry is fully explained, and contains separate paragraphs concerning what you action(s) you can take and what your vet will do if consulted. It's a very useful reference.

Book Description
A superlative analysis of contemporary gardens as well as fascinating collection of landscapes around the world, Making the Modern Garden is a definitive study of the philosophy and practice of garden design at the outset of the twenty-first century. Author Christopher Bradley-Hole, himself a landscape designer of note, discusses the process of garden design in a presentation of modern landscapes at all sizes and locations. Among the designers in the book are Fernando Caruncho, Peter Walker, Kathryn Gustafson, and Vladamir Sitta; different types of gardens include roof gardens, courtyards, urban and country gardens, and dramatic landscapes.
Bradley-Hole also reviews the ever-changing palette of plants used in the modernist garden as well as materials and landscape features. A point of reference throughout is the modern art, design, and landscape architecture of the twentieth century, represented by artists and architects including Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Roberto Burle Marx.

Book Description
Israeli landscape architects have been integral to their country's development, designing places that have become symbolic icons of the nation. The Valley of the Destroyed Communities at Yad Vashem, Haas-Sherover Promenade in Jerusalem, Ben Gurion's gravesite at Sde Boker, Yarkon Park of Tel Aviv, all of Israel's national parks, university campuses, most kibbutzim, and even entire cities have been designed and planned by Israel's landscape architects. Yet despite their unique contribution to the nation's identity, their work is largely unknown outside Israel.
Dreaming Gardens is a pioneering work that provides, for the first time, a framework for understanding the contributions of landscape architecture in the creation of Israel. The development of the landscape architecture profession in Israel paralleled the development of the state, as immigrants brought skills and ideas from the Diaspora, creating a unique opportunity for designers to help shape their national identity. Helphand's clear writing, complemented by copious color illustrations, charts the shifting attitudes of this singular culture toward its land, landscapes, communities, and nation.

Historical reminder.......2007-05-12
Provided a valuable insight into some of the thinking of slaves even while experiencing inhumane treatment and searching for their own identity. A woman of courage, foresight and well ahead of her time.
Excellent.......2006-08-30
In a world that still suffers from the blight of slavery, mainly in Islamic nations and northern Africa, and Sudan, but also through the sex trade in nations like Thailand, this book is a great nonfiction account, especially for grade and middle schoolers, but also for all who think slavery is a thing of the past.
history hurts but is needed to know.......2006-08-20
I can never tire of learning the depts of suffering black woman had to endure. It gives me even more pride for my people and much hope for a better tomorrow.

THE TRUTH FROM SOJOURNER TRUTH.......2002-12-16
Anyday, anywhere, this book: "The Narrative of Sojourner Truth", is a masterpiece. The hardship she endured, as well as other horrors of slavery will always live in our memories. Afterall, it is said that: 'The evil that men do lives after them'. Sojourner's courage and perseverance is commendable. There is a lot to learn from her.
I strain to keep myself from laughing each time a serious issue like Slavery is raised, and I see men and women do nothing but run for cover. The North accuses the South of having been too tenacious on slavery, and the South accuses the North of hypocrisy, insisting that she (the North), started it in the first place: by disguising the first slaves whom she brought (in 1619) to New Amsterdam (the present day New York) as "indentured servants".
Surely, the guilty are afraid and ashamed; but that changes nothing. Reality will always remain reality. This 138-paged book is a fantastic history memo. It is the real truth; from Sojourner Truth.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting..........2005-11-04
I thought this book was written a little differently, but I also found it helpful. It was cool how Sojourner Truth's Book of Life was written inside of it along with a whole separate book. There was a lot of good information in it. I used this book for a school project and it worked out great. The book was useful and interesting to read because there are letters from people she knew that were written to her. I enjoyed reading this also recieved info from it.

Book Description
According to nineteenth-century racial uplift ideology, African American women served their race best as reformers and activists, or as "doers of the word." In Belabored Professions, Xiomara Santamarina examines the autobiographies of four women who diverged from that ideal and defended the legitimacy of their self-supporting wage labor.
Santamarina focuses on The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, Eliza Potter's A Hairdresser's Experience in High Life, Harriet Wilson's Our Nig, and Elizabeth Keckley's Behind the Scenes. She argues that beyond black reformers' calls for abolitionist work, these former slaves and freeborn black women wrote about their own overlooked or disparaged work as socially and culturally valuable to the nation. They promoted the status of wage labor as a mark of self-reliance and civic virtue when many viewed African American working women as "drudges." As Santamarina demonstrates, these texts offer modern readers new perspectives on the emergence of the vital African American autobiographical tradition, dramatizing the degree to which black working women participated in and shaped American rhetorics of labor, race, and femininity.
