Book Description
Vertebrate sensory neurons occupy a unique place in the nervous system, conveying information from the periphery to the CNS. While sensory physiologists have long recognized differences in response properties among cells in dorsal root and cranial ganglia, the full extent of heterogeneity among these neurons has only recently become apparent. Phenotypic diversity is the underlying theme of this unique work, which summarizes our current understanding of the individual characteristics and development of sensory neurons. The chapters are arranged in three cohesive sections. The first describes heterogeneity in the function, biochemical make-up, ion channels, membrane properties, and central projection patterns of dorsal root ganglion neurons. The second section discusses the development of sensory neurons, covering such topics as the origins of dorsal root and cranial ganglia, adhesive interactions involved in axon outgrowth, trophic dependence of sensory neurons, and the development of the physiological properties and central and peripheral connections of dorsal root ganglion neurons. The last section explains regeneration and plasticity of mature neurons, including sprouting of skin sensory axons, plasticity in central terminations, axotomy and regeneration, and the continuing role of neurotrophic factors in adult neurons.

Negative Nancy.......2007-08-23
I had high hopes for this book as the reviews were good. The author doesn't give many positive highlights about anything in Panama. I was really disappointed with the authors reviews on food. Out of all the places he reviewed they were all negative. Why would I want to go eat from a place listed in his book? There were some great places to eat in Panama City ( Taj Majal and Marsala). I agree that the cuisine is nothing to write home about in Panama, but he could have found some nice place to eat. Also if you plan on using the public transportation system, this book doesn't give very much. It is mostly written from the perspective of rental cars or your own car.
Where I find Al Natural.......2007-06-30
In the summer of 2006 I went to Panama for three weeks, with my wife and our two daughters. We've planned all the trip with this book, where we allways find accurate information and some precious advices. The way the book is writing, is very good. And I allways remember this book for one thing: it's where I find the Al Natural, a superb place in Isla Bastimentos, in the Atlantic shore of Panama. Great!
Best of the Panama Guides.......2007-02-13
I would suggest using this book along with the Lonely Planet Guide but just remember, don't let a guidebook keep you from exploring places they don't mention. Panama is a great country and a lot safer than most other Latin American countries. The fact that they use the US dollar for their currency makes it a lot easier. I have lived here in Panama for the past 8 years and it is a great place for a retiree.
Panama Guide.......2007-02-06
Used this book as a guide to a trip to Panama City and Colon areas. Information is accurate and informative.
My Bible- I carry everywhere with me.......2007-01-11
This book has it all laid out perfect. I am off to Panama and after reading every word in this book I know exactly where to go, what to see, where to stay, where to eat and where not to do all of the above. It is a must have.

Not the best.......2006-11-10
The book series is not my best bet for a person to learn arabic. The best book on the planet is MASTERNING ARABIC by jane wightwick it is superb combined with the audio tapes .The masterning arabic is superior in content and allows the person to see how words fall into place. Please try this book .The best way to learn arabic is to realise that it is different and varied in the way the words are formed this book shows that to the person who want to learn arabic so good luck
Don't buy!.......2005-02-17
I am currently taking arabic at my university and we are using this textbook. I find it impossible to use. I am also taking French and the textbook we use is so much better organized. This book orders the information, especially the vocabulary, contextually, which is good in some ways, but overall it leaves me stumped and confused at each exercise. Each problem set takes hours to decifer and the dictionary in the back is not easy to use nor extensive. Pass on this and find another way to learn Arabic.
Hard, but rewarding.......2004-03-03
I can't really add too much to what the more articulate reviewers have already said. I'm really writing this to counter the negative reviews.
I've been using this book for about a month, in a second-semester class (Alif-Baa was used in the first). It's true that it asks you to make leaps of faith, in that you're sometimes given only parts of a verb ('she lives', 'I study'), or apparently inappropriately advanced vocabulary ('My father is a translator for the United Nations' in lesson 1?). On the other hand, it does seem to mimic how we learn our native languages: we learn piecemeal, rather than by memorizing conjugation tables, and we often learn by guessing the meaning, using the word, and re-evaluating based on the listeners' reactions. Also, we learn in several ways, all at once: reading, speaking, listening, watching.
I have studied and achieved various levels of fluency in several languages over the last 30 years, ranging over Indo-European from Irish to Spanish to Russian, with a few others in between. I think you have to accept that, as exotic as any of these languages may seem to an English speaker, you'll have to open your mind to other ways of expressing yourself once you leave that (Indo-European) family.
For a beginner like me, learning Arabic seems like a very long journey. Everyone decides for themselves whether it's worth the time and effort. I think this book goes some way towards making the journey interesting and stimulating.
Student of Arabic.......2004-01-21
I feel sorry for those reviewers who had nothing good to say about this textbook. I think that their frustration comes not so much from this textbook as it does from the fact that Arabic IS HARD!! I have studied over 10 languages and Arabic is by far the hardest. This book is not perfect; I doubt any textbook could be, but it does what most Arabic textbooks do not--it tackles the language from many aspects: written, spoken, audio, reading, etc. AND gives you a lot of vocabulary to learn. While this can be frustrating at times it is absolutely essential to learning Arabic--it is a vocabulary rich language. As far as the Isalmic slant to some of exercises, what do you expect. Arabic and Islam are inseperable. Even everyday phrases reflect this. A lot of the complaints I read about this book seem to stem from the fact that a lot of students didn't buy the series but instead tried to start with part 1 (without Aleph Baa--the book for learning the alphabet) or part 2 without part 1 etc. These books build upon each other as language learning should. You can't expect to understand what is going on in part 2 without learning what was taught in part 1. This seems logical to me. If you want to learn Arabic get ready for a long haul and buy this book. Buy others as well but for sure buy this book. If you are trying to learn Arabic without the benefit of classroom study buy this book and get ready to be frustrated. Arabic is hard, but so worth the effort.

Customer Reviews:
Good Book on the Belgian Shepherd Breeds.......2004-11-14
This is a nice book about a great breed of dog. There are few really informational books about Belgians, and I enjoyed this one. Nice photography and well-written. It contains clear (if sometimes basic) information about the breeding, care, temperament, showing, breed standards, grooming, and training of this breed. Nice section on bloodlines. Concentrates on European dogs and balances information between the four Belgian breeds / coat types.

Guide to Winterthur Museum & Country Estate
ASIN: 0912724439 |
Book Description
Explaining why he created 175 period rooms after inheriting his family home at Winterthur, Henry Francis DuPont wrote, "I didn't believe the early-American arts and crafts had been given the recognition they deserved, so I assembled examples of architecture, furniture, and widely divergent early-American materials of all sorts to show America as it had been."
Book Description
In addition to hosting the weekly syndicated radio program “Gardening with Ed Hume, the author is the host of “Gardening in America,” the longest-running television gardening show in the U.S. ”In this, gardening expert Ed Hume’s first book, he gathers his experience and wisdom into a single encyclopedic manual. His gardening motto? Keep it simple. Hume shows readers that anyone can have a gorgeous garden that blooms in spring and summer and looks great in fall and winter — a garden that doesn’t need constant tending. The book contains special chapters on lawns, perennials, bulbs, fertilizers, and ground covers; includes 100 color photos, lists such as the best plants to grow under evergreen trees and a list of fragrant flowers; and offers tips on protecting plants during cold weather. A thorough, user-friendly guide to gardening in the Pacific Northwest that covers all the basics in a friendly, non-technical way — and a good read regardless of zip code.
Customer Reviews:
Pleasant reading but not much depth.......2006-03-07
If you like to hear Ed Hume talk about gardening, this book is a perfect extension of his style. The type is set well and the photos are gorgeous. He presents his vast knowledge in a casual but very organized way. But there really aren't many special insights that one might expect from an experienced gardener.
I found that I could read a whole chapter and feel like I had only read the back of a seed packet. That's because his essential message is that it's easy--maybe a little too easy. For example, nearly every time he recommends a fertilizer, he says to use a rose, or all-purpose, or vegetable fertilizer. In a topic where we're inundated with specialized data and miracle-of-the-month formuae, it's refreshing to hear some one say to basically just grab a box and use it. But it also doesn't provide very much except to remind us to relax and enjoy gardening. That message could fit on, well, the back of a seed packet.
If you're looking for an organic approach, this is not a book for you. He incorporates much of the wisdom of organic into his approach, but he certainly doesn't eschew the application of synthetic chemicals, nor does he distinguish between them and their alternatives.
It's a nice winter read and a well-rounded compilation of lots the commonsense truisms that Northwest gardeners absorb over time. For those times you need a fussier approach, Steve Solomon's _Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades_ is a substantial and essential guide.
Relaxed and informal how-to.......2003-10-07
Ed Hume is recognized as one of the foremost garden authorities in the north west. His television show "Gardening in America" is watched by millions who appreciate his down-to-earth, practical gardening advice. Reading this book is much like watching his T.V. show - he shares information in a very relaxed, direct fashion. The advantage of the book is that the reader can keep checking back whenever the information is required.
The writer has organized his material well, moving from a general topic - landscaping - to chapters on different categories of plants, trees, shrubs, bulbs etc., with a final couple of chapters on composting and protecting plants from creatures. Each chapter has been further divided into sections and sub-sections so the search for information is simple. Better still, the information is supplied in digestible nuggets so the reader doesn't have to plough through excess verbiage.
Much of the book is taken up with "encyclopedias", for example "shrub encyclopedia", which takes up almost half of the 48 pages given to shrubs. These are not encyclopedias, of course, they're just plant lists with some helpful notes beside each species. I'm not a great fan of plant lists, even when they're called encyclopedias, they appear to me to be just an easy way to fatten out a book.
That, said, this is a very useful and readable book for the gardener in the Pacific North West. Buy it for your garden library - you'll find yourself using it often.
gardening by ed hume...nw gardening made easy.......2003-09-06
received quickly and in perfect condition...the book itself was informative but more photos of plants would be helpful to novice gardeners like myself.
A straightforward, "gardener friendly" guide.......2003-07-19
Colorful photographs enhance Gardening With Ed Hume: Northwest Gardening Made Easy, a straightforward, "gardener friendly" guide to growing everything from perennials to lawns, hedges, trees, and vegetables. Tips on pest control, step-by-step instructions from seeding to harvest, and a wealth of time-saving advice fill the pages of this easy-to-follow and enthusiastically recommended resource designed especially for the non-specialized general reader in a Pacific Northwest climate wanting to enjoy the creation of everything from flowerbeds to yard lawns.

Book Description
The first of these volumes offers a text of the last and greatest surgical encyclopedia of the Middle Ages (1363); the second analyzes its construction from earlier sources. The text itself covers anatomy and the treatment of wounds, ulcers, fractures, dislocations, and a variety of other conditions and diseases, including not just surgical but medical procedures, which it discusses within a broad framework of medical (physiological and pathological) learning. In the commentary volume, the author's more than 3000 references to older medical authorities are traced to their sources and their use is discussed. Together, the volumes illuminate the culmination of medieval surgery and its techniques in an academic setting and furnish a kind of chrestomathy of the whole range of literature known and cited in medieval medical faculties.

Book Description
The author illuminates a little-known aspect of black American life, and shares the rich, warm and vivid recollections of her own family, and their experiences, as well as of moments in history, such as the the March on Washington and Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech. She shares with us times of triumph and achievement, both for her family and black Americans, as well as those times when they suffered from prejudice and discrimination. Without bitterness, she explores and analyzes colorism among both whites and blacks, as it exists in this country, and traces the path by which she came to reject color bias, and to realize her true identity as a woman of multi-ethnic background, as an American, and as a human being whose strength and hope spring from ancestors who came to this country in chains, ancestors who came of their own free will, and ancestors who occupied this land for thousands of years.
