Awful.......2007-04-08
One of the worst guide books I have ever read Sparse inaccurate information. Even though published March 2004 tells readers a Tuk Tuk in Patong Beach costs 10 baht (it costs 150 baht!)Full of broad information obviously culled from other (older) guides, not learned by personal experience. Garbage. Don't waste your money.
Thailand Islands & Beaches.......2007-01-31
This book is particularly helpful as it contains many detailed maps. As well, the accomodation section is very useful for the traveler who does not have any set plans as it helps to show several different price ranges from budget to high end & includes phone numbers & websites of them frequently.
there are also tips for every type of traveler here in very detailed sections on every province in thailand. although it says islands & beaches there is a very good section on Bangkok city itself which is good as most people start & end up their Thailand vacation there anyway & spend some time in the city.

A Paradise awaiting the reader and the traveler.......2007-08-20
I started reading Loney Planet years ago when I planned my trip to Thailand and have never been disappointed. I am an author and my memoir, soon to be released, takes place in Thailand in 1993. The beauty then and now has not changed in the outer islands. I would recommend anyone visiting Thailand to read this book first to get a feel of the country and its wonderful people.

Wait for next version - No tsunami updated.......2005-06-27
Despite all SE Asia - tsunami affected guides - say: "you can update online" you don't get lot of information on their website.
Practically half of the areas detailed by this book is affected by the tsunami. The information is good, but not certain due to all the problems in the area. I've been in the andaman beaches and the guide was usefull, but I would wait for next version of this book. Lonely Planet Thailand (the next version, tsunami updated) is ready in august 2005, I think. So it's worth waiting...

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there, chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globe-trotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years and as a result, has the experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money. With a special full-color section on marine life (nudibranches and spider crabs galore), this is the definitive guide to Thailand's beaches. The authors provide excellent coast-by-coast coverage complete with tantalizing photographs. If you are undecided, read with caution, as this book could easily prompt the purchase of your air ticket. --Kathryn True

Marketed For Whom?.......2002-09-07
This edition has plenty of information that is helpful. One can get enough information before going, upon arrival, or after arriving on where to explore without this book, however. The Lonely Planet Thailand guidebook (for the entire country and not just the islands and beaches) also has plenty of information on Thailand's islands and beaches.
With the inclusion of "luxury" accommodation and over-priced "tourist" restaurants and trinket shops, it appears this book is marketed towards a particular group: North Americans who only have two-weeks, and therefore need to "plan" ahead for their trip. This is a particular market and that is understandable, but it appears that LP is trying to get a piece of this market, and gear this guide-book towards these type of folks.
One thing to note: Ko Chang is not off the beaten track by any means. It's going to be the next place completely destroyed by the Tourist Authority of Thailand. They are working on it right now, evicting local Thais who've lived there for generations to build hotels.
There is no where in S.E. Asia that is "off the beaten" track, except perhaps, parts of Laos. The trail is crowded, and continues to get bigger. If you're a long-term visitor or a "two-week hoteller" then this book will due.
If you want to go off of the beaten path, this is for you........2001-07-20
I got a lot of use out of the book and made 2 trips to Thailand on it. I went to Koh Chang, and the information was a great help in helping me plan when to go, what to do, how to get there and everything. It especially helped in Bangkok, which is needed as this is a place where you don't want to seem lost, it is overwhelming. One thing that I would add to this book, When you come out of the last gate at the airport, there will be very many people standing there, waiting for the tourists. Don't look at them!!!! As soon as you make eye contact, they will be on you like white on rice ready to find anything that you might need, just to get some kind of commission. I did a lot of research about a month or two both with this book as well as the internet (check out lonely planet's site, as well as other web queries), so it helps to not get there and open the book for the first time. If you want to go to Phuket or Koh Samui or some other tourist trap, you don't really need a book, but this book might tell you some insider's tips that you might not find just by showing up and waiting to be ripped off. One other thing, about flights, join a courier orgnaization. It will save you A LOT of money and you will only have to sacrifice some baggage space. Another thing, if you decide to go to the tropical spots, best time is the 1st of October. This is the beginning of tourist season, although it doesn't pick up for another month, so you can still do everything without the crowds present yet. One last thing: GO TO KOH CHANG!! It is the best!! This book is to me considered to be a necessary item for travel (Lonely Planet always is!).
Information covered in other travel guides.......1999-12-09
I just returned from a trip to Thailand. I was in Bangkok, Phuket and some of the outlying islands. There is nothing in this book that is not covered in the other general Thailand Guides. I would even go so far to say the Rough Guides Thailand has more comprehensive information about places to stay and things to do near the beaches. Also, something I didn't know, Thailand has a great tourism service provided in the Airport in Bangkok that can book most anything you need for stay on the beaches (if you are going to Phuket). It was a great trip even if I did have to lug this junky book around with me the whole time!
Poorly organized book with abundant misinformation.......1999-02-09
I purchased this book thinking that it would be the definitive text on the islands of Thailand. I could not have been more wrong. Lonely Planet's misinformation on the weather patterns (specifically monsoons typical locations at different times of the year) resulted in my being stranded on an island in a monsoon. Other guide books including the rough guide to thailand as well as my German and Irish colleagues books provided accurate information which frequently disagreed with the information in this book. I also found that the rough guide to Thailand provided more complete and accurate information on the islands. Overall I would not recommend this book to anyone- better luck next time to the authors.
Best guidebook for beaching in Thailand.......1998-12-04
Just like its siblings this lonely planet book saved me over 100 times its cover price for my vacation. It does include an abbreviated Bangkok section as well as thorough, encyclopedic information about coastal Thailand. If you wish to plan a beach vacation in Thailand this is the best book you can buy. While it lacks unnecessary glossy photos a la Conde Nast, it is chock full of useful advice. My 1/2 star deduction is because I wish the authors would emphasize how incomplete your vacation will be if you eat every meal in the resort restaurants, and shop only in gift shops. That is a minor complaint, and I simply will not travel without a relevant lonely planet in my carry on bag.

The Herder Dictionary of Symbols: Symbols from Art, Archaeology, Mythology, Literature, and Religion
by Boris Matthews
I bought this small book on symbols for the primary purpose of guiding my 'deliberate doodling' as well as mind-mapping processes. It's compact & handy for quick reference. It has more than 1,000 entries & 450 illustrations.
It is, in fact, the only symbol book I owned at this moment. It has symbols from art, archaeology, mythology, literature & religion.
The Herder Dictionary of Symbols: Symbols from Art, Archaeology, Mythology, Literature, and Religion.......2005-08-03
This book has been very good resource for some art work that I am producing.
great reference book for symbols.......2004-12-25
I have been using this book as a reference for years. It is a wonderful book, full of information from a wide variety of cultures and disciplines. My only disappointment in the book is that it is not three times larger. I would love to see it expanded to include more symbols.
Great Reference Book for the price!.......2001-08-19
This book is tiny but full of little pictures that make it an even better reference guide. If you are looking for color pictures, detailed information and/or illustrated examples in culture then this is NOT the book for you.
Great little reference guide for the graphic designer.......2000-04-18
This book should be on the reference shelf of anyone designing or evaluating logos. It is compact and packed with information on shapes, images and symbols from the perpectives of cultures around the world - from prehistory forward. It is illustrated and cross-referenced. Grab it several time throughout the design process to make sure you are on target with the symbolism inherent in the shapes and images you are using in your designs. Great value.
Book Description

Ideal for papercrafters, decoupeurs, collagists, commercial artists, and graphic designers. 358 color illustrations.

Of dogs and men.......2007-01-22
This isn't a book about dog training, although it talks about that quite a bit. It's not even a book about dogs really, although it talks about dogs all the time. It's really about our relationships with dogs, how they fit into our lives and our society and our mythology. Hearne taught poetry at Yale, but her real calling seems to be dog training. Her writing is funny and dry and full of information, and sooner or later she'll say something that annoys you. But if you can't take a little annoyance you should have a dog. And she's probably only annoying you because you are carrying around some misconception about dogs.
Awesome book very true to the issue.......2005-12-27
I have owned and trained multiple breed of dogs and Ms Hearne is very right about the issue. This book should be mandatory to be read by anyone and everyone of the dumb politicians that come up with those stupid bans. This book is very true and is a must read, whether you are a dog owner (of any breed) or not.
The S&M Trainer.......2005-10-05
The late Vicky Hearne was never considered a great trainer across the board. Those that believe in Positive Reinforcement training consider her techniques and ideology to be cruel and unnecessary. For instance: holding a dogs head in a hole filled with water to stop the dog from digging. There are other methods that can stop the behavior without using such barbaric methods. Her techniques should not be used, and notice, the aggressive dogs she deals with are never rehabilitated into mainstream doggy life as it were. They are never trained to the point of being trusted. So much for her methods.
One of my favorite books.......2005-07-27
Some people object to Vicki Hearne's writing style (smart girls can be annoying). Others feel her training methods were too harsh. But Vicki Hearne knew a great dog, and how to write about one. Be warned: This book is politically incorrect and may make you do something really stupid, like adopt a pit bull. Vicki Hearne is, after all, the one who said, "It is true that Pit Bulls grab and hold on. But what they most often grab and refuse to let go of is your heart, not your arm."
Great Dog, Difficult Book to Process.......2002-10-11
I respect Vicki Hearne, I like this book. Bandit, and his case that Vicki fought for so well was a very important watermark in exposing the myths and half truths that cause so many local authorities accross the country to blindly deem certain breeds of dogs as dangerous. I want to love this book because of this, however, for me the book was to difficult to read. Vicki uses extremely complicated sentence structure and seems to enjoy putting the reader through the wringer before she makes her point. I had to come back to this book a few times to finish it. I believe this is a story we all should be aware of, unfortunately the style of writing alienates it from a good deal of it's prospective audience. If you're well read, go for it, if not just expect to go through a mental obstacle course before the book is finished!

Customer Reviews:
Wasn't What I Had Hoped For.......2005-05-06
I'm going to be completely honest here in my assessment of this book. I've been growing bamboo for many years and i once worked for one of the only bamboo nurseries in the USA with a quarantine license. I had hoped this book would have been more. I give Michael Bell some credit for his work, but overall i just was not happy with this book. There are alot of topics in the book that seem RUSHED or that just aren't covered in depth which would have made this book really worthwhile. A good deal of the book is devoted to what he calls an A to Z of Bamboo plant descriptions, but i found this list to be grossly deficient. Some species have only a sentence or two, maybe a very small short paragraph, as a description! Some aren't even listed! Some of them aren't even very accurate or are very generalized and "RUSHED". Even more, the author is very biased towards certain species which seem to have clouded his judgement when reviewing others. Further more, some of the information in this book is just plainly false. Especially where potted plants are concerned, which isn't covered in much depth at all. The book has a very "RUSHED" little section on diseases/insects, which is disappointing with any plant or gardening book. Overall, the book has a "RUSHED" sense about it and in some areas is just plainly wrong or misguiding (telling us certain plants don't do well in pots when they do, or that certain plants grow to this size when they are in fact taller, or that certain plants don't seed or flower when they do and have in recent years). It has some nice pictures but you should definitely purchase a more thorough book on the subject. I gave it 2 stars for effort. I'm sure glad i purchased a few other books to compliment this one. If i were relying on this book alone i'd be in trouble!
A fine overview.......2004-03-17
This is an excellent book with terrific photo's. The pictures and text give the history of some bamboo types, leaf/wood samples, use in the garden for both visual effect and to build with. Bamboo's versatility in the garden extends well beyond just adding an Asian flavor to an area. That said, my only critique would be the need for a better way the species can be identified. You can figure out plants to the Genus using this book, but nailing which plant species it is can be foggy. Mr. Bell did a great job introducing a new plant for most gardeners.
Best Book for US Gardeners.......2000-08-02
If you've done a search, you already know how few books there are on the subject of growing bamboo in the temperate climates of the US, Britain and Europe, especially for the enthusiast gardener who is neither a potential farmer nor a botanist. This wonderful new book becomes the #1 choice for its good information, its passionate and readable style, its beautiful photographs, its lists of where to buy bamboo in the US (including mail order), and as the perfect gift for friends who may still have irrational concerns about and little knowledge of this magnificent plant. Bamboo lovers will enjoy every page. If you only buy one book on the subject, buy this one. If you can purchase two books, buy "Bamboos" by Recht as well. For design ideas, consider "A Japanese Touch for Your Garden." Start here, but be warned: once smitten with the beauty and elegance of bamboo, you may want to buy every book on the subject that you can get your hands on.
a cracking book.......2000-04-18
Mike Bell has done the gardening world an enormous service with this book.It has been hard to find practical solid info on bamboos-perplexing nomenclature and tales of rampant invasive behaviour have left many cautious and perplexed. This work provides clear practical guidance and is beautifully illustrated.Useful for beginners and comprehensive enough to be an essential purchase for all enthusiasts.
great bamboo resource.......2000-04-05
I stumbled upon this book before I was about to purchase a bambusa vulgaris. This book was well written, informative and visually appealing. Since, I live out near the water, I needed to know how to care for and successfully grow bamboo in my backyard. With the help of this book, I have maintained a couple of potted bamboo plants outside and a giant one indoors. Helpful to a novice bamboo grower like myself, but also a good reference to keep always.

John Edward Bruce, a premier black journalist from the late 1800's until his death in 1924, was a vital force in the popularization of African American history. "Bruce Grit," as he was called, wrote for such publications as Marcus Garvey's nationalist newspaper, The Negro World, and McGirt's Magazine.
Born a slave in Maryland in 1856, Bruce gained his freedom by joining a regiment of Union soldiers passing through on their way to Washington, DC. Bruce was in contact with major figures in African American history, including Henry Highland Garnett and Martin Delany, both instrumental in the development of 19th century Black nationalism and the struggle for Black liberation. Close relationships with Liberian statesman Edward Wilmot Blyden and with Alexander Crummell, a key advocate for the emigration of Blacks to Africa, assisted in Bruce's development into a leading African American spokesman.
In 1911, Arthur Alfonso Schomburg and Bruce co-founded the Negro Society for Historical Research, which greatly influenced black book collecting and preservation as well as the study of African American themes.
