Customer Reviews:
Part of my travel kit.......2007-09-30
Although I am an experienced traveller, I always ensure that I bring along a copy of the Lonely Planet guide. Not only does it give me a flavour for the country I am to visit, but the guides are packed full of excellent tips from those who know the area. A Lonely Planet guide pays for itself - it is one of the essentials in my travel kit.
Comprehensive, but not the best out there........2007-07-06
This book was somewhat helpful when I recently spent two months in Kenya, but I found that some of the information was out of date (despite this being an updated edition) and there were many things that should have been mentioned that were not. Although it gives a great overview, for those who are going to be spending a substantial amount of time in Kenya, I would probably opt for the Rough Guide to Kenya, which was more thorough and much more accurate.
Excellent, Accuarte, and Helpul Information.......2007-07-06
I used this book while living in Nairobi for 3 months. It was especially helpful for planning my excursions around the country. My Kenyan friends couldn't believe how helpful it was. They didn't even know where to get the kind of information the book provides. I wouldn't travel to Kenya without it!
Kenya travel guide.......2007-03-09
LOts of good information for my upcoming trip. Will take it with me to refer as I travel.
Missing coordinates.......2006-08-02
Yes, LPK is fine source. But there are lot of people (including me) using GPS. And we miss coordinates & waypoints.

Mountsafaris adventure Trekking in Kenya is Good........2005-03-22
To the auther , davidelse/ david wenk.
Thankyou very much for your advice in your book trekking in east africa , which i used when i was travelling in kenya and Tanzania.I Would like to tell you my exeprience Horiday in Kenya with Mountsafaris Adventure, and hoping you will consider this small company.
I really had a great time with mountsafaris adventure.
I can say that kenya is a nice and safe country to travel. I did camping safaris and trekking mount kenya for 6 days sirimon chogoria route ,oh beautiful vegetation. Guide and porters were great helper , food was nice , The trip was well organised. Mountsafaris are trusted , as i sent them 1500 us dollar deposite for my 3 weeks horiday , and everything work perfect .They booked the , hotel , organise everything for my trip , so when i come everything was ready .They picked me from the airport on time , direct to the hotel ,following the trip start.
Camping was fun , Mountsafaris staff were friendly , very safe with them both on the mountains and on safari . Their camps have all facility.
Mountsafaris prices are fair . Their prices are all incrusive , like , pick ups from the airport, park fees, transport by landcruser with open roof. tour driver ,food three meals a day ,cook .
. I can definitely recommend Mountsafaris adventure they're cheaper compared to others companys ,they have Good services , knowledgeable and reliable Tour Operators and offer a really good range of trekking mount kenya , camping and lodge safaris .
thankyou ,again continue writting more advice on your book as they are really helping the travellers , You need to also to be considering some of the company who are doing good services for the tourist.
Some of the companys like Mountsafaris are good but they are not mention on the your book. I come to know mountsafaris throuhg a friend who did trekking mount kenya with them .
Congraturation for the work you are doing .

Good introduction, but not enough on the trekking peaks.......2003-02-13
I found this book a good introduction to anyone expecting to go trekking in East Africa. It goes over, in substantial detail, all the factors you may face (medicine, visas, hotels, transportation, tours, trails, etc.). However, there is very little on the trekking peaks, which I thought would be the most interesting portion of the book. For example, on Mt Kilimanjaro there are only maybe 5-6 pages, with only an overview description of the routes. If you are looking for overall trekking in East Africa, this is good book, but if you are looking for info on the trekking peaks, there are other, more specific guides, that may be more helpful.
Essential luggage items: meds, visas and Lonely Planet.......1999-01-20
I used this book to plan and complete a Kilimanjaro climb, a Tanzanian safari (Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara) and a trip up the coast of Kenya. The book was more than helpful; it was essential to the success of the trip. Helpful information is complete, accurate and relevant: exactly what you will find in the Lonely Planet Trekking guide. The helpful information -- routes, housing, food, currency, gear, etc. -- are tools to keep you safe, healthy, prepared and even comfortable. The essential information is much more: it gives you a feel for where you are going and what's important about being there. Descriptions of languages, religions, customs, history, geography, geology, climate, etc., gave me a deeper awareness of the countries I was navigating through. This book is strong on both counts. Here's an example: The vocabulary lists were really helpful in opening conversations with staff, villagers and border officials. However, the book's essential advice was to just try your best at speaking Swahili, and the people you meet will respond very warmly to your having made the effort. The results were heartwarming, and they opened the doors to other discoveries I could not have made otherwise. The book itself is a valuable commodity. On Kilimanjaro I leafed through the chapters for maps and plant descriptions. The book so fascinated my guide that I gave him my copy as a parting present (though I couldn't part with it on the climb since it was the only map & route description we had!) Note that the Lonely Planet Trekking books do not promise to be field guides for the areas they describe: bring another volume(s) to help identify the flora and fauna you encounter.

Book Description
This is the ideal companion to the long-awaited Rough Guide to Japan and Tokyo mini guide. Aside from teaching visitors this challenging language, the phrasebook has sections devoted to Japanese etiquette.
Customer Reviews:
Indispensable little aid.......2005-09-02
Wonderful pocket-sized reference. The alphabetization of phrases is particularly helpful, as it made it very easy to quickly look up the phrase I needed, rather than scouring through the "categories" system that many phrasebooks seem to utilize. The first section of the book provides a very basic little grammar primer and also a section on other language basics, like numbers, months, times, dates, and the most basic phrases (hello, excuse me, I didn't understand, etc.). At the end you'll find a list of colloquialisms, a "reverse-lookup" section from romanized Japanese to English for phrases you might hear, and a second reverse-lookup from kanji to English for common signs/words you might encounter in your travels (train station, entrance, ticket office). Finally, the book ends with a reverse-lookup *food* section from kanji to English, for reading menus.
Phrases are provided not just with romanized pronunciation but also in kanji, which is *tremendously* helpful -- as you can point out the phrase to a Japanese speaker if the two of you are having difficulty understanding each other. The book is definitely geared towards tourists and travellers, but offered a broader range of phrases and vocabulary than I expected (the word for "suntanned"? phrases for getting a haircut?). Sprinkled throughout are various minor cultural & travel notes, such as typical bank hours, notes on major holidays, descriptions of the different kinds of payphones you might encounter, drinking etiquette, etc.
All this, and it can be tucked into your back pocket! Crazy! The book is compact, but I personally found the layout & type-size quite easy to read -- particularly as the translations next to each phrase are printed in green ink, so they stand out from the word you're looking up. I did find that while the mini dialogue boxes were helpful in familiarizing myself with particular basic conversation constructions, they were often placed in not necessarily instinctive spots in the glossary (for instance, a dialogue about whether a hotel has a single room for the night & how much it costs was in the "n" section -- presumably for "night").
It's not going to make you fluent by any means (and if you think a mini phrasebook can do that for you, more power to you!), but it is a marvelous little tool for getting around, particularly with a little studying behind you. I took a few basic phrases gained from beginning Pimsleur lessons and this little phrasebook with me on a three-week trip to Japan, and was able to communicate the necessities throughout -- often with hilarious results, as my conversational partner and I came to an understanding through trading one or two word exchanges and clumsily constructed sentences in each other's language. Highly recommended, and well worth the $6 or so it will run you.
If you're just starting out, better than a dictionary.......2003-11-18
I took this to an immersion camp having had absolutely no Japanese before arrival, and found it more useful than my dictionary. As Japanese sentence structure is not so intuitive (to native English-speakers), the included phrases are a must to understand how words and particles fit into sentences. I also prefer it over other phrasebooks as it is arranged alphabetically, not thematically, in the English to Japanese section, which is the majority of the book. The grammar section and culture notes are also helpful. I absolutely recommend this to anyone who has never studied Japanese before, and needs a dictionary that will help you make sentences.
Book Description
Over 1,000 motifs reprinted from a rare book of design first published in France in 1870. Presents ornate Cyrillic and Greek letters, corners, borders, page heads and more as they appeared in illuminated Russian manuscripts dating from the 10th through the 16th centuries. Royalty-free.
Customer Reviews:
Great Resource!.......2000-04-14
Great resource for Rus' Illuminations. Good printing. The notations of where the pieces of illuminations are from are incredibly helpful. For begining illuminators, realize that the book only gives portions of illuminations and not the whole manuscript. Also, the color scheme seems to be a little off when comparing these pictures to the original manuscripts. There are a couple of places where there is a use of one-tone color instead of a two-toned color and the metallics don't come through very well.

The way to good riding is timeless.......2001-11-06
Once you get over the different style of font and familiarize yourself with the vocabulary this book privides for some exciting reading. This man must have been a genius. He provides detail description of how to loosen up your young horse in the shoulders and further work and excercises in a precise way which still pertains to the basics how we ride today. Its sometimes good to go back to the original scourses.
Fortunate Cavendish put it in writing.......2001-07-08
Together with books by Gurinire, Mseler, and Podhasky (see these) this too is a very important book concerning classical dressage. The text gives the impression of being written with considerable thought...this contrasts somewhat with some modern dressage texts. This text together with Gurnire's is recomendable.
Customer Reviews:
an excellent reference.......2004-08-13
This is an excellent guide to anyone interested in equine bodywork. Clear simple instructions in the release of muscle tension, based on pressure point massage, great as a backup for pratical training and an interesting read as a stand alone book.
The layout is simple, making it very eary to read, with lots of clear photographs showing both the techniques and also enhanced to show the inner area being worked on. An asset to any horse owner.

Book Description
This memoir describes a long and unusual life that started in eastern Turkey in 1896 in a house with an earthen floor, and ended in middle-class comfort in suburban Toronto nearly a century later. The author was an eyewitness to the first genocide of the 20th century, a horror in which most of his family was lost. He lived through the first World War and the Bolshevik Revolution that led to the creation of the Soviet Union. He fled from Soviet Armenia, first to Moscow and then to London. From there he went with wife and baby daughter to Toronto, where he faced the task of earning a living during the Great Depression. Caught up in this swirl of historical forces he describes in fascinating detail his remarkable story of survival. And, perhaps not the least remarkable fact of this life, he was over 80 years of age when he began writing his life story. There is much here to stimulate and educate, not only those who wish to know more about the Armenian Diaspora, but everyone with an interest in the human condition as it was experienced in other places and in another time.
