Great for teaching about nature, friendship and the seasons!.......2007-05-22

We got this out of the library and loved it so much that we purchased a copy and are now looking for other similar books. Mouse goes to visit his friend Mole in the spring, and mole is about to plant a garden. Together, they tend it all year long, and also have fun doing other "seasonal" activities while waiting for their plants to grow (such as hiking, camping, picking apples, sledding in the winter, etc.). It teaches about how things grow, also about the change of seasons and what activities to do each season. My 3 year old loves it! For slightly older kids, you can also read the separate boxes along the bottom of each page which explain complexities of nature such as how rain and compost form, how a fruit grows from a flower, what happens to plants and animals in the winter). These separate boxes on each page correlate to the events occurring in the story on that page. Fantastic book!

Beware...Looks easier than it really is..........2006-11-17

I bought this dot-to-dot book for my 4 year old, because the picture on the front shows a simple butterfly with dots #1-17. BEWARE!! The pictures inside are very small and complicated with some of them having 81 dots to connect!!! I think I might even have a hard time with it..... The cover picture made it look like a simple book for a new dot-to-dotter, but it's not!! The illustrations inside are neat and colorful, but just look way too complicated.

Not for the first time traveler.......2007-03-09

I bought this one, and also the Frommer's Paris guides. This book would be perfect for the frequent Paris traveler, that has already seen all the major tourist attractions and wants to get more information for the best and out-of-the-way dining, shopping, and hotels. It's very consise in those areas, but definately not for the first time traveler.

A guide for experienced travelers.......2005-10-12

I've been to Paris many times, but needed a guidebook with up to date hours, closing days, and infrastructure changes. This one was perfect. It has no glossy pictures or basics, and would not be the best guidebook for a first time traveller. The quality of the categories and logical layout makes it well worthwhile.

Maybe it's all the legal jargon, but this book's a little tough to plow through... okay, fine, it's boring to read, for me anyway.

The info in it is important to know. I wish it was presented in a much more accessible way though.

Comfort for grieving pet owners.......2007-02-04

I have now read both books by Gary Kurz under the "Cold Noses" title. I gave the first book 5 stars because I felt that it was such a valuable book for anyone grieving over the loss of an animal. I feel this book was even better because it was meatier. It had more to say scripturally and Gary's voice was stronger in this book. It was so good that I read it in one sitting. I believe that his scriptural evidence was sound although as a Catholic I dismiss his one quick reference to the rapture. This book should go a long way to dispelling many misconceptions that both believers and non-believers have regarding the topic of animals and eternal life. All I can say is that this is really a good book and I highly recommend it.

Seven year old hiddeen in Vichy France during WW II.......1999-09-28

How does it feel to be left alone as a seven year old. Your mother is taken by the authorities and your father is away in an interment camp and you are left in a cherry orchard in southern France. Isaac Levendel captures his feelings and shares them with us in his spell binding book, "Not The Germans Alone" published by Northwestern University Press (ISBN 0-8101-1663-4).. The amazing reality of the roundups after the invasion of Normandy rings with the madness of the Germans and the French establishment. Levendel gives us insights into the workings of Vichy France and the large amount of collaboration. While we were led to believe that most French were in the resistance, Levendel's book makes it clear that very few Frenchmen were in the underground and very few Frenchmen helped Jews escape the Nazis. Those few that risked their lives were simple people acting honorably. What I found most interesting is the description of his emotions about his mother and the description of her actions are sometimes inconsistent. He shows her virtues and her flaws. He writes about her love, her intelligence, her caring, her stubbornness, her bad judgement in not fleeing sooner, her mistake not taking all her money with her, and then going back to get it. I got the whole picture of her and that makes the book rich and touching. Levendel describes the peasant family that adopted him. They were heroes who risked their lives to help. Some scatological material gives us an earthy feeling of these people struggling to feed themselves as they helped others and thought nothing of it. They were truly pious. l loved how Levendel writes about his experience during allied bombings, "The bombardment did not feel or sound like it does in the movies. The heavy smoke smelled like dust and fire. The explosions were much more violent that I expected. The earth trembled under my body, and I could feel the shock wave of the explosions on my neck and chest, as if the bombing were happening inside my shirt. There was nowhere to hide. My mother had reached the limits of her power and could do nothing more to help me." The tracing of the official Vichy documents to verify what really happened is itself a real mystery story.

Very revealing about the French collaboration.......1999-09-27

This is a very beautiful and honest book about what happened to the Jews in France during WWII. It gives rare details about the French quiet acceptance of the deportation of Jews. It also reveals how difficult it is to get basic information from the French archives 50 years after the facts.

A must read for everybody who desires to know.
