Fantastic read!.......2005-08-14
Even if you've never heard of the wombat (it's an Australian marsupial that looks like a little piggy, but isn't one), you'll still be captivated by this book. The author - who won a science writing prize in 2002 for this book - not only gives us the low-down on who wombats are and how wombats live, but does it in such a way that it's hard to put the book down. On the side we learn about Australian prehistory and the giant dinosaur wombats that used to roam Australia. We also hear about wombat research done by a young teenager from Geelong Grammer who spend his time climbing into the narrow wombat burrows on a schoolcamp - mostly at night while the teachers and other students were asleep. It's an example of great non-fiction writing - a documentary, journalism and a terrific story all in one!

Not realistic.......2007-06-19
I was very disappointed with this book. I took 2 books it was ITALY DISCOVERY JOURNAL I turned to and it is the one my kids enjoyed the most. Pat had great insight about how to make your kids part of the experience, they will always remember this trip as with ITALY DISCOVERY JOURNAL they were part of the decisions.
Lots of useful hints.......2005-02-26
As other reviews have stated, this book is far from perfect. But I bought it as soon as I read the art-gallery hint (take crayons and paper). We just got back from a Picasso museum, and our 6-year-old was begging for freedom even though she learned about Picasso in kindergarten. The crayons would have been a lifesaver.
On the upside, the authors understand what kids like and need, and give good hints on things they will like. On the downside, they don't seem to be the brightest bulbs on the planet (the book is filled with howlers like "wet your appetite" and "taxi cues"). They also seem to have a heck of a lot more money than I do (and I'm far from poor). Their idea of an inexpensive hotel is 95 Euros a night for a double (and the kids are extra!). That's my idea of splurging. I shudder every time they tell me that a particular cafe is "a bit pricey, but a good place to relax". I translate that to "lunch will cost more than you ought to be spending on a room."
The second edition also suffers from sloppy proofreading. There are lots of places where prices are still given in lira. The Euro has been around long enough now that I have no clue what 5,000 lira would equate to.
Even so, I'm glad I bought the book. I'll be able to sit down with my daughter and plan the trip together, and that alone is worth the price.
Not very good.......2004-07-07
We own every European travel book that exists. I can honestly say that this one is by far the worst one I have seen, hands down. The coverage of accommodations is sparse and only includes extraordinarily expensive hotels, for the most part, and the dining recommendations are little better. There are no unique tips in this guide and it really covers 6 cities, and not very comprehensively. I give an extra star for making the attempt to write a kids travel guide, since they are not common.
Don't waste valuable suitcase space with this book........2004-06-15
I bought this book prior to a trip to Italy with my 3-year-old son and was highly disappointed. The authors stick to only the most obvious siteseeing destinations and didn't provide the nitty gritty that a traveler with children really needs. For example, the chaper on Venice of course describes St. Marks, but makes no mention of the playground right near the train station. The Milan chapter mentions "The Last Supper" but overlooks a park we discovered that has a collection of dinosaur statues and a carousel.
Another major omission: the authors made no mention of the fact that many youth hostels offer accommodations for families, and the YH in Verona was a real gem -- gorgeous grounds to run around on, a spacious room, and cheap meals. It was also about one block away from a playground. None of the accommodations listings mention the hostel option.
Bring Lonely Planet and leave this book behind -- the luggage space is better used by a spare coloring book or toy.
Great Book for Traveling with Children.......2003-02-24
This book was quite helpful to us in our trip to Northern Italy. All the restaurant suggested turned out well and the book gave us some great ideas of things to do with the kids. It is probably more useful with children 10 and under than for older kids although some of it is still applicable.
Book Description
For every student, a time eventually comes when basic grammar is no longer the problem. You can say a few words about the weather, or the fact that, yes, you are feeling hungry, or explain that you are going out for the day - and actually be understood. Beyond that, however, the going gets
tough. You cannot make pertinent comments about philosophy, politics, art, science, law, or business - simply because you lack the necessary vocabulary. In fact, you may not be able to say that you are interested in "philosophy" at all, because you don't know the Japanese word for it. How do you go
about acquiring this specialized vocabulary (most of which consists of kanji compounds)? Usually by spending hundreds of hours reading Japanese books or picking through a dictionary.
This book is an attempt to shorten that process by collecting a good number of the more commonly used key words from crucial areas of human endeavor. Now, without spending years mastering the written language, you can occasionally come up with the right word at the right moment in a conversation
that is striving toward comprehensibility. This can even be done by students who do not have a strong grasp of kanji, for they can learn the words as sounds.
The areas covered in the book are ideas and theories; philosophy and religion; politics and government; the fine arts, humanities, and social sciences; science and technology; law and justice; and business and economics. This division allows the student to go the category where vocabulary is needed
and learn the key words given there, rather than floundering around in a dictionary and hoping one has found what is needed. A further advantage of this arrangement is that certain kanji tend to be repeated over and over in certain categories: for example, the kanji read "gaku" in the science
section of the book. This type of repetition allows the student to get a feeling for certain kanji and usages.
Beginning students can pick up individual words and put them in sentences of their own making, no matter how simple, and advanced students can get a better understanding of context by reading the sample sentences in the book. Since no one, even in their native tongue, can hope to be proficient in
every field, advance students can quickly pick up key words in areas they are unfamiliar with.
Previously published in the Power Japanese series under the same title.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for the professional user and advanced students.......2007-02-07
This little book is of great pleasur and fun. It gives you a hole lot of special and essential vocabulary, and does it with fun examples and explanations . It's a great tool for the advanced students and the only weak spot is the lack of grammar notes. I know that the aim of the book isn't grammatical, but I would loved it if there were some Keigo, Ukemi and other advanced notes. All together a very fun book that will build up your vocab confidence.
Surprised at some comment..........2005-03-09
I am a little surprised at some of the other reviews of this book. It's title I feel can be a little misleading and there is no way this book will make you sound "pedantic or insincere". It really is a Vocabulary Builder and is meant to be a quick and concise way to build specialist vocabulary across many topics. I am quick to add though, that this is not specialist vocabulary in your native language, in fact if you could not speak on the topics and using the words described in English in this book you would most probably be considered ignorant. Too many people live in Japan, learn a little Japanese and then think that the Japanese don't talk about politics, business, science, religon etc in everyday ilfe. The sad fact may be they don't talk to you about it because they don't think you could talk about it.
This book is a great way to learn a lot of vocab. Chapters are split into topics with an excellent background and etymology for most chapters and also excellent examples in both romaji and kanji, so you can increase your kana and spoken comprehension at the same time. If you are already a fairly strong reader and speaker of japanese this book can help you reach into new topics.
For professional users of Japanese.......2004-05-06
As a longtime student and translator of the Japanese language, I would like to see more books like this on the market, in contrast to the sea of books that focus on Japanese slang, foreign loanwords, and profanity. Japanese academics and professionals who operate in an English-speaking environment don't expect to get a free pass on difficult English vocabulary. "How to Sound Intelligent in Japanese" seems to be based on the premise that foreign speakers of Japanese should also be able to handle advanced terminology.
Historically, native Japanese speakers have been amazed at a foreigner who can manage even a passable sentence or two in their language. Ten years ago, it was not uncommon for Japanese to heap praise on an American visitor to Tokyo for correctly ordering lunch without resorting to English. Americans were even complimented for knowing how to say "konnichiwa" and "ohayoo gozaimasu."
Today, the bar has been raised substantially, and a reasonable comprehension of professional and academic terminology is needed in order to be taken seriously as a foreign speaker of Japanese. This is especially true if you intend to rely on your Japanese skills in a professional context. "How to Sound Intelligent in Japanese" can help the intermediate student to polish her skills to the point where Japanese speakers will regard her as an adult speaker of their language.
The book is laid out in a convenient thematic format, so you can focus on the areas which are most relevant to your own needs and interests (science, law, etc.) There are enough example sentences to give you a sense of the context in which the specialized vocabulary items are used. Nonetheless, this book does assume an intermediate to advanced grasp of Japanese, so it may be a bit too much for first-year students; and the book doesn't offer much in the way of grammatical instruction.
However, this is an extremely valuable resource for intermediate students who want to ease into more complex subject matters in Japanese. After working diligently through this book, the student will have the appetite and confidence necessary to tackle the publications that Japanese professionals themselves read.
Waste of Monetary Funds.......2003-01-10
This book will teach you how to sound pedantic and insincere in Japanese. It is basically a list of buzz words that stupid people throw around in the states to sound smart. It teaches absolutely no grammar, so you will spit out words like "radioactive waste" in broken, incorrect Japanese.
A quick way to learn vocaulary outside your own specialty.......2002-05-06
I like this book because it groups a lot of the basic vocabulary you need about specialized fields. You don't have to go searching through a dictionary to pick it all up. There is maybe one field where I feel fairly confident, but most of the rest I'm not that interested in and only want the vocabulary because I absolutely need it to listen to a lecture, read a book or the newspaper, or just talk to someone who I know will bring up a certain topic because it's in the news or it is their pet pieve.
The book is also useful because the author tries now and then to give hints on differences between certain words or groups of words. That's something you will definitely not find in a dictionary.
If you're a beginner, you can just read the commentary and look at the lists and pick up what you need, not try to memorize everything. If you're more advanced you can read the sample sentences. I definitely don't agree with those who say if you're intermediate or advanced, you can go out and read the books themselves, and don't need a book like this. I don't want to be reading many Japanese science books, but I still want to know how to say chemistry. The easier it is, the better, and this book does make it easier.

I love Seguy.......2007-05-11
I'm not sure how true the colors are to the original designs by Seguy--I have seen different versions--but I love these colors and the cleverness of the patterns. I don't even have to use them, I just love looking at them!
Good design ideas.......2005-09-30
I need good graphic design ideas for my handmade tiles. This book is very promising- with its adaptable and charming motifs, I am sure it is a good investment for me.

Two thumbs up.......2007-09-11
This is great book with a lot of valuable information about oxen, including the care of oxen. This is the best reference / guide on oxen out there. A++++
THE BOOK on oxen.......2002-10-23
This book is absolutely the most important reference on oxen. If you are contemplating buying a team, training a team, researching animal traction, or are just curious about oxen; this book will satisfy you. Particularly if you do not live in New England and have to train your team on your own you should not be without this book. Mr. Conroy distills the great New England ox tradition and explains how simple and satisfying owning and working a team can be. My one complaint is the glossing over of the use of oxen in farm work. Although that is understandable as most oxen are kept for fairs and parades even in New England.

Drew Conroy , Oxman and writer.......2000-03-29
I live in New England and have been involved with working cattle for thirty years. In this region we have a wealth of people knowledgeable in the art of training and working steers and oxen. What sets Drew apart from these teamsters is his talent and ability for putting into print what he has learned and expirienced. Drews twenty plus years of expiriences as a trainer and a teamster are compiled in a fashion that allows a novice teamster to read the book and successfully produce a team of working cattle. As a co-leader of a 4-H Working Steer club, I advise our members to purchase and read Drews book. It is the finest resource for answering 'oxen' questions available. I enjoy this book and refer to it often. I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in working cattle. Great job Drew!
Oxen : A Teamsters Guide.......2000-03-27
Drew Conroy - the reigning leader in modern working cattle techniques has once again outdone himself. The total compilation of this laymens handbook is without a doubt unequalled. Speaking as a Draught animal teaching professional, with 20 years experience, I highly recommend that this information be taken by any novice, amateur or professional as gospel. Working draught animals and three continents of travel, collecting information for research I have never been able to find another source as definitively accurate in every minute detail. Additionally the terminology and technical detail is unsurpassable. "This book crosses the boundaries of class and education to bring to the international working animal scene a timeless source for information and instruction." If your are currently working cattle or planning on starting a carreer or hobby in the working cattle feild the best money you will ever spend will be on this book.

Book Description
Western home and garden design has been increasingly influenced in recent years by ancient Eastern traditions. Feng shui masters are now routinely consulted by architects and interior designers, and bonsai gardening continues to fascinate and inspire. In CREATING BONSAI LANDSCAPES, the spirit of the East is recreated in 25 stunning miniature landscapes that not only are a delight to look at but also lend a harmonizing and soothing force to any environment. Su Chin Ee works with a Chinese form of bonsai art known as penjing - which literally translates as "landscape in a pot or dish" - to create her designs.
The art of bonsai was developed as a means to please the ancestors so that they would bestow blessings and wealth for generations to come. Su explains how each bonsai landscape in the book conveys different elements of the original eastern philosophy and themes.
Each landscape is presented in project form, with clear advice on how to select suitable plants, plant and position them, and nurture them successfully to full maturity. Each project is thoroughly illustrated with a color photograph of the completed landscape, cross-section drawings to show how the landscape is put together, and practical advice on choosing the equipment and materials for creating special features. Tips on construction techniques and shortcuts, and a visual materials list of required items, round out the detailed instructions. And to ensure long-lasting success, Su provides pruning and trimming tips, solutions to common problems and diseases, and a directory of the most popular bonsai trees and shrubs.
Customer Reviews:
A very small world.......2003-07-14
The writer presents 18 miniature landscapes which, she says, "represent a very personal synthesis of the bonsai and penjing traditions". These landscape are made up of the usual tiny trees, moss and gravel, but they also contain intricate rocky "outcrops" which form the basis of the entire landscape. Her creations combine the delicacy of the tiny landscape with the ruggedness of rock and tree to unique effect.
The writer gives detailed instructions for making each of the landscapes, including - I kid you not - how to make all the rocky outcrops yourself. Given patience, skill and delicacy of touch almost anyone could follow these instructions and make a very attractive table top landscape.
The writer was born in Singapore and studied art in England. She is a judge in the bonsai category at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. She approaches her miniature landscapes from the point of view of a painter, and she incorporates the Chinese principles of Tao and the balance of yin and yang to create harmony in these beautiful miniature worlds.
