Customer Reviews:
left some things out.......2006-11-06
I agreed with other reviews in the sense that it left out alot. Maybe it was to out of date like others had suggested. We backpacked through the stretch of the pacific side of panama in a few weeks. The book left out parts of places we found, cabanas on the beach and so forth and roads that were supposedly non existant. Panamanians were extremly nice and helpful. Other books could probably tell more.
Not too impressed.......2006-07-09
I've been a "lonely planet" traveller for quite some time, and have a whole bookshelf of their guides. However, Lonely Planet Panama was fairly inadequate. Luckily, we also purchased the Moon Handbook and were much more impressed with it. The LP guidebook was outdated, uninspired, inaccurate, and lacking significant detail. If you're heading to Panama, buy the Moon Guide instead.
Fantastic Companion for any trip to PANAMA - 5/5 STARS.......2006-06-10
I found this guidebook to be very useful during my time in Panama and I can't see what the problem is with the other reviewers here. LP guides are all different, I was just in Mexico using another LP guide and found it just as useful as the one for Panama.
The book contains plenty of maps and information to help you plan a thorough trip around the country. I found the information to be quite detailed and to the point. Very good tips on restaurants, where to stay, etc... prices do vary a bit and I would not expect an empanada or a tortilla to cost exactly what is stated on the book. Prices do go up all the time.
Conclusion: Lonely Planet PANAMA is a keeper!
I also recommend the MOON GUIDE to PANAMA, and if you are into birdwatching, you should get yourself the bible: The Birds of Panama.
Very Out of Date & Inaccurate.......2006-05-19
I travel quite a bit (for business and vacations) so I have purchased and read over 30 Lonely Planets. Of all of them, this one has more errors and is more out of date than any I can recall - much more out of date than the publishing date suggests, which makes me think the latest addition was not a thorough update. Over half of the restaurants they recommended, which I tried to visit, were either out of business or not in the location they listed in the book. Prices in general for everything from taxis to hotels were inaccurate. Some of the maps were inaccurate as well. Whole streets in Bella Vista were omitted. Sometimes this was a minor inconvenience, and other times it was a disaster (trying to get the ferry to Isla Toboga for instance - one of the ferry companies listed is out of business, and the docks from which the ferries leave moved nearly two years ago, but the old address and times are stilled listed in the LP - thus we missed our ferry). This guide is one of the only LPs (the LP Trekking in Nepal being the other) that I felt it was actually a hindrance to rely on because it was often so inaccurate. Unfortunately, this negates any positive aspects of the book.
Not Up to Par for Lonely Planet Guides.......2006-03-20
In all fairness, the copy I have was published in 2004, so much of the pricing and other info is outdated. Nevertheless, I was disappointed in the overly-opinionated editorializing instead of useful and insightful traveller's facts that I expect from Lonely Planet guides. I think I will start giving a closer look to other travel pubs such as the Rough Guide series, which is a shame, as I have been a fan and loyal customer of LP since "SE Asia on a Shoestring" which was published the early 80s. This Panama guide needs updating, more detail and a cleansing of the overly-political content.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Guide, but Politicized and Ethnocentric........2003-10-13
Lonely Planet, probably has the most up-to-date, comprehensive, practical guide for Panama, currently available. Would I recommend it? Absolutely! Unfortunately, Lonely Planet, failed to edit the author's crude, narrow-minded, self-righteous, self-serving commentary. The author also glosses over or totaly ignores pertinent information. Personal politics and self-aggrandizement have little, if any place in a travel guide, and when it exists in such a publication, it suggests a lack of empathy for, and or understanding of, other people and their cultures. The shortcomings of Lonely Planet's guide, noted above, mar an otherwise excellent publication. For the typical "Ugly American" wanting to "Do" Panama, the Lonely Planet guide should prove more than adaquate. If on the other hand, you are an open-minded traveler capable of independent thought, you might consider, also obtaining, "Getting to know PANAMA" by Michele Labrut, a former press attache to the French Embassy in Panama. Written with class, mature intelligence and a sense of respect for Panama and it's People, "Getting to know PANAMA", not only fills the gaps in the previous guide, it is also an excellent travel guide in it's own right and an outstanding source for unbiased information.
Tourism or Colonialism.......2003-05-19
Having traveled for 3 months in Panama, I found the guide to contain many opinions and to be extremely judgemental. It is actually offensive in some parts with it's colonial nature. Also very ego heavy. The author believes his opinions to be golden.
A big dissapointment.
The Panama yellow pages is a much better book.
Go buy the Ulysesses guide.
Helpful Guidebook but Not a Bible.......2002-09-27
As the owner of a first and only backpackers hostel in David City,Panama (The Purple House) .... I see many people carrying this useful book around and it seems to be a great help to many. My only complaints about the book (not the writers' fault) is that 1) we are not in it yet because we weren't open at the time of his research. 2) the city of David is not made to sound attractive as a place to visit. There are lots of things to do here that aren't listed. Of course, that too is Not the writers fault, he can't possibly visit everything the way a person like me can. I have lived here for more than 3 years so I have been able to collect alot of information over that time.
As with any guidebook, it should be used as a guide and not a bible, definitely worth buying and carrying, its the best book for Panama.
Useful... if you don't have anything else.......2002-02-01
I spent six weeks in Panama last summer (2001): 4 weeks on Isla Colon in Bocas del Toro (and surrounding areas) and 2 weeks traveling around the rest of Panama. This book is a useful reference if you don't have anything else - especially if you don't speak Spanish. It provides a lot of valuable information on hotels, both budget hotels and very expensive ones. However, I often got the impression that Doggett is somewhat of a yuppie traveler. For instance, in the chapter on Bocas del Toro, he spends a paragraph or two trashing the bat cave found between the town of Bocas and Boca del Drago. I imagine he was so busy whining about the smell of the cave and the shriek of the bats that he did not stick around long enough to discover that there is a SECOND bat cave, very close to the first. This second cave contained an astounding variety of biodiversity, including a giant boa constrictor. Hands down, this cave was one of the most incredible natural wonders that I saw on my entire trip. If you are a traveler who is more into roughing it and seeing lush primary rainforest (even if it means tromping through rainforest with mud up to your knees), then this lonely planet guide may not be adventurous enough for you. Fortunately, in spite of the differences of opinion I had with this guidebook, I still had an amazing time in Panama. The rainforest left me speechless, the people were always friendly and helpful, everything is much less expensive than in the U.S., and there are fewer tourists in Panama than in Costa Rica. Still, I would recommend looking for a different guidebook before you settle on this one.
Breadth of information is amazing.......2001-12-13
I only used this book for Panama City and Bocas del Toro, but it was an invaluable asset for both. How can Doggett write knowledgably about so many hotels and restaurants, cultural issues, how to buy authentic jewelry, etc? Seems like he spent decades there. It would have been helpful if he wrote about how to bargain with taxi cab drivers for half day and full day rentals. Most one-way fares are pretty much fixed, but it is much nicer to have a driver show you the sights in P.City, which are spread out. My recommendation: Buy the book, and explore the places outside of Panama City.

For those with children of a very curious nature, these are the books for you. Everyone in the house couldn't put this one down. Excellent pictures, not just drawings. Are they the real thing? Children will also be introduced to sonar and mountianeers. Science becomes very interesting.

Busch, a longtime student of wolves, gathers bits and pieces of lore, lots of biological facts and factoids, and a great deal of expert testimony on the behavior of our lupine friends. You'll learn from his pages that, given their druthers, wolves would sooner eat moose, buffalo, and deer than just about anything else; that wolves can travel 125 miles in a single day; and, sadly, that in Canada, at least as of 1995, the wolf is the only animal hunted year-round with no bag limits and no license requirements. This well-researched potpourri is must-have for fans of Canis lupus.
Customer Reviews:
I'd like to give it four and a half.......2006-04-19
I'll admit it--when I first started reading this book, I was a little disappointed. I'd just gotten done re-reading Barry Holstun Lopez's "Of Wolves and Men" and saw a lot of repeated material.
I had to remind myself, thoughm that Lopez's work, dating from 1978, was exhaustive, and there really wasn't too much historical material that he hadn't already touched on. So I continued.
Where this book is really valuable is in the updated information on reintroduction and conservation programs. A lot has happened in the last quarter decade, and Busch has covered it incredibly well. The copyright is from the late 90's, so it's a bit dated, but most of the programs and refuges are still going.
Basically, this is the book that picks up where Lopez left off. It entreats responsibility on the part of the reader, and explores the many facets of humanity's relationship with the wolf. Busch's book doesn't have quite the style or emotion of "Of Wolves and Men", but it is a worthy effort nonetheless and well worth the read.
complete guide.......2005-08-14
complete guide of everything you wish to know about wolfs, myths, laws, morphology... A book you must have if you like wolfs
The BEST of the BEST!!.......2003-07-18
This book is simply the best book you could get for learning all about wolves. Great guide book about everything about wolves. Great pictures and research by Robert H Bucsh. I would also reccomend reading about their behaviour as well, this book only teaches the basics, but you should also get The Wolf: The Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species by L David Mech, or any other book by L David Mech; he is the best wolf biologist known!
Outstanding overview of the wolf itself, & its conservation.......2002-09-04
Robert Busch is considered to be among the top wolf experts, and he's created a fabulous book with _The Wolf Almanac_. He gives concise, accurate information about the wolf's anatomy & physiology, behaviors, social structure, history, evolution, and current range, as well as its role in human culture. He covers predators' roles in nature, the trapping/hunting industry, pet wolves & wolf-dog hybrids, and information about current wolf conservation efforts. Some of the hard stats he gives are out of date, since they are from 1998, and things have changed quite a bit since then, but overall, this is a great, informative book.
Busch gives many anecdotes from wolf researchers and conservationists, as well as quotes and stories from the ranching and trapping points of view. There are quite a few gorgeous full-color photos in the center portion, and many black and white photos run throughout. This is a fantastic educational tool for anyone interested in learning more about wolves and their behaviors. Nearly every facet of the wolf is covered in this book. I am a tour guide at Wolf Haven (South of Olympia, Washington,) and this book is required reading before becoming certified to give the tours - it's that good.
There are a lot of really good books out there about wolves, and this one is simply outstanding.
Awesome!!!.......2000-09-08
This is a great book!! I first checked it out of the library for a report, and realized that I just had to have my own copy. It is filled with excellent information and beautiful photos. It is quite possibly, one of my most treasured books.
Book Description
The Wolf Almanac has become an acknowledged reference work on the evolution and history of wolves: their biology and physiology, behavior and sociology; and their influence in ancient culture and mythology. This newly revised edition contains the most recent information on the wolves of Yellowstone, as well as fully updated information on the status of wolves throughout the world.

Book Description
Wake Up Every body is an in-depth graphic journey into the struggle of life as a young black male raised by America's inner city streets. This journey is not only Jihad's, but documented bits and pieces of every African-American mother's son's life. The private lives of so many that have revolved around him as he evolved thru childhood, adolescence and adulthood is profiled.
As the merry-go-round of life in the hood is relived, explanations will become evident as to what sets the stage for the events and circumstances that lead so many to the prison-gates. A vivid colorful picture is painted throughout of the how and why Black men in America raised in the inner cities, fortunate enough to live past the age of eighteen are conditioned to accept the inevitability of prison. Growing up in an environment where happiness is sought in the bottom of liquor bottles, needles and dope sacks is just ordinary life in the hood. Through several edutaining sub-stories the fine line between user and dealer, and how they use the same means to get to the same ends is profiled. Whenever one tries to break the cycle, it will become as clear as my words in writing as to how unseen hands pull at him to continue the course he was conditioned to complete, bombard him.
First hand accounts of the black cultural documentary like revolving doors of ignorance and how the school system perpetuates the black man's American Dream (life as a player, hustler, thief, drug dealer and wannabe pimp) is entertainingly analyzed. Travel into the world of a dope addict. Make the introduction to several self-empowered revolutionary freedom fighting black men that are deemed as poison in today's society, men that will never be given a second chance to give back so much that has been missing. Hold steadfast to something strong and real as the harsh reality of life, and it's dizzying revolutions and evolutions as seen through the eyes of one young black male is detailed in various stages such as project, penthouse, hospital and penitentiary life.
Take a first hand look behind the walls and fences of America's slave prison system, where you can seen what about 37% of all black males from ages 17-29 experience in this country. Shown throughout is how our socio-economic conditioning controls the masses of the people.
This is a story of tragedy, love and of hope: A story of slavery and freedom. This story is based on my life growing up in Indianapolis, Indiana and Atlanta, Georgia in the 1970's, 80's, and 90's. In rare occasions, other people's experiences are intermingled, specifically ones that had a strong impact on my life. The ending is totally fiction, due to the fact that this book was completed a short time after being released from Americas slave system, also known as its prison system.

People are truly sleeping on this one!.......2002-10-20
Wake Up Everybody is one of the best novels I have ever read. I had the pleasure of hearing the author read at the Baltimore Book Festival and the section he chose to read hooked me from the first word. I purchased an autographed copy and dug right into it. It was outstanding. The author has a remarkable way of telling a story and his characters come to life vividly on the pages.
I truly felt for Lincoln, the protaganist of the story, and how he had to make choices (whether right or wrong) in order to survive. Jihad had a strong future ahead of him as an author. I just hope other people catch onto him with a quickness.
A DEFINATE MUST READ.......2002-05-17
This book is an absolute must have for all African American, young and old. I just purchased this book on two days ago and have completed it already. Although, I have never experienced the events that Jihad has, I know these events and experiences are accurate. This book is a true eye and mind opener, and again, a DEFINATE MUST READ!!!
Moving and inspiring.......2001-09-07
I would like to start off by saying for a first time writer, his style was very eloquent. The book itself was moving and inspiring. His life story was similar to anyone you may know. His life experiences were thought and action provoking. His emotions were evident in every word and you couldn't help but feel them as well. The books had it high points and its low points but the outcome is 'all good'. For the man or woman who feels lost in their purpose in life, this is a must read and a definite inspiration towards a step in the right direction. Thank you, Jihad, for writing such a story that accurately depicts the African-American's struggle to survive and for offering a positve testimonial for overcoming all odds.
Overcoming all the odds.......2001-09-05
This book was great. This guy needs to be an inspiration for all people who feel like they are ready to give up. the stories were awesome. Some sad, some funny, all exciting. I have never read anyone with a writing style like his. At times i got confused, but it all came together as I read more and more. I almost missed work this morning, because I was up half the night reading, i could not put the book down. Great work.
